About Our Cover Patrons found a variety of ways to enjoy Lexington Lake Park on its opening day in early July 2017. This spring and summer, JCPRD will be opening several new facilities, as well as Meadowbrook Park, and Big Bull Creek Park. For more about these two new parks, see pages 6 & 7.

 Resident and Nonresident Fees Johnson County residents receive a ten-percent discount. There are exceptions where the price is the same, regardless of residency. Those listings will display only one price.

 Late Registrations Registration is required prior to class attendance unless otherwise noted. Enrollment may be accepted after classes begin if space is available. Pro-rating of fees will be handled on an individual case basis.  Class Transfers Class transfers may be made subject to class availability. Transfers must be requested at least one week prior to the starting date of the class, for less than one week a $5 processing fee will be assessed per transfer requested. Some exceptions are necessary for certain programs and classes. These are noted in the class descriptions.

 Cancellations and Refunds There is a $5 processing fee for refund requests less than one week prior to the starting date of a class. Refund requests made after the class has begun will be pro-rated and the processing fee will also apply. JCPRD reserves the right to cancel classes if minimum numbers are not met. If canceled, rescheduled, or if the class has reached maximum enrollment, you will receive a full refund. Some exceptions are necessary for certain programs and classes, and these are non-refundable or may have their own refund policy. These are noted in the class descriptions.

 Scholarships Limited recreation scholarships (for Johnson County residents only) may be available to offset some of the cost for classes and programs. Theater

Museum The Johnson County Museum offers unparalleled opportunities to explore the story and heritage of Johnson County. Innovative museum offerings will integrate history, art, and theater with fieldtrips, summer camps, workshops, lectures, and other educational programs to engage children and adults alike. The Theatre in the Park is expanding its summer theater tradition that has entertained audiences for generations by offering year-round productions in the new flexible theater space in the Johnson County Arts & Heritage Center. With seating for up to 300, and the ability to arrange the space in a variety of configurations, The Black Box Theatre provides a venue for a diverse range of productions and performances to be offered by area community groups.

Kidscape

History comes to life in a kid-sized community at KidScape! Children experience life in the past through play as they explore 3,500 square feet of buildings and landscape inspired by the history of Johnson County. Education programs and family events will guide children to discover the overarching themes of then and now, local history, and how communities change over time.

Spring opening anticipated for Big Bull Creek Park Watch for a late spring opening for JCPRD’s fourth regional park. Big Bull Creek Park is a 1,900+ acre park located between Edgerton and Gardner in southwest Johnson County. The district’s 22-acre Mildale Farm special event venue is on the northwest corner of the property and has been available for rentals, as well as spring and fall public events each year, since shortly after it was acquired in 2005. Phase I development of the remaining property involves projects in three separate areas. These include a combined park maintenance building and Johnson County Park Police substation, a nature-themed playground with a three-quarter-mile paved trail, and a camping area for organized youth groups. The park police substation is located just north of the intersection of Four Corners Road and 199th St. “Having staff housed at the southern and western locations of county parks, trails, and facilities will enhance deterrence of crime and disorder, and deliver expected response times to calls for service,” explained Johnson County Park Police Chief Dan Field. “It is also critical to our ongoing mission to establish close community relations with patrons and employees of these parks, trails, and facilities.”

A restroom in the maintenance building will also be available for public use, and the parking lot will also serve an 18-hole disc golf course, which will be the third in the district.

Programming opportunities and green space will be part of new Meadowbrook Park When it opens this summer, the new Meadowbook Park in Prairie Village will afford not only about 80 acres of green space in a densely populated area of the county, but also many new programming opportunities. Meadowbrook Park is situated in the northern and central portion of the site of the former Meadowbrook Country Club. Features of the park include: a destination playground called the Tree Line Adventure; a large shelter called the Grand Pavilion, which will accommodate approximately 160 people; three additional picnic shelters; eight pickleball courts; a separate play and picnic area called The Grove, located in a grove of oak trees; Meadowbrook Hill, which utilizes surplus soil to create a high area which will be perfect for snow sledding and other exercise pursuits throughout the year; three miles of paved trails; and an area containing low-impact outdoor fitness equipment.

The main gateway to the new park will be past the 10,000 square-foot Meadowbrook Park Clubhouse, located near the park’s northwest corner near Somerset Drive. The building includes an event space for about 200 people, a multipurpose room, and a Natureplay Preschool with an outdoor playground. Other building features include a small lobby, administration area, catering kitchen, and a deck overlooking the park area. Once it opens, three 50 Plus staff members will be moving to the new facility, where they will be offering programs for all ages. “We’re planning group fitness programs for youth, adults, and all ages; outdoor skills programs, lunch and learns, and we’re teaming with our 50 Plus daytrip program to do specific educational sessions, which will be followed by a trip about that topic,” said Recreation

Specialist Kari Baesel, who will become facility manager for the clubhouse. Other anticipated offerings will include drop-in card groups, bridge classes, and outdoor pickleball for all ages, including classes, leagues, and tournaments. Special events for families are also on the agenda, including kids’ nights out. One area that will make the Meadowbrook facility somewhat unique is the inclusion of nearby outdoor spaces which allow for ongoing outdoor programming such as nature walks, bike programs, outdoor cooking classes, and more. Watch for program listings in our September through December catalog. “We’re excited about the ability to be indoors and outdoors and really utilize the park for programming,” Baesel said.

Dodgetown Photo Check out Antioch Park’s all-new Dodge Town When it reopens in the second quarter of 2018, Johnson County’s favorite old western-themed play area will be all new again. The popular Dodge Town play area in Antioch Park closed in late September for an extreme makeover which included removing and replacing all the buildings, decking, and mulch. But don’t worry, it’s all being replaced with new versions of most of the buildings, including the schoolhouse, bank, pony express, city hall with a clock tower, general store, and blacksmith shop. New additions include a pour-in-place safety surface between the buildings, faux horses and cows, a train station, complete with a shaded seating area for parents, and a stationary train play element for the kids. The reconstruction project is meant to correct issues of drainage and general disrepair. The much-loved play area was originally built in 1967, and countless children have explored the western town replica in the years since. It has been rebuilt three times previously.

Whether for a corporate event, family reunion, wedding, rehearsal dinner, birthday, or any other occassion, we have great venues which are customizable to meet your specific needs.

Johnson County Arts & Heritage Center The full event space accommodates 300, with multiple layout options available. Space can be divided into two separate rooms with a capacity of 200 and 100. Finishing kitchen available. Multiple other options are also available including The Black Box Theatre, studios, and a conference room.

Heritage Park Golf Course The Green RoomÂ is a spacious room with wet bar, scenic window views of the golf course, and seating for 100 guests.

Tomahawk Hills Golf Course The Elmridge Room seats up to 120 with ease. Amenities include a catering bar and kitchenette with a microwave oven, sink, and refrigerator.

Roeland Park Community Center Features three rooms accommodating 40-50 people, multi-purpose room with kitchen and stage for up to 125 people, and an outdoor gazebo. Call (913) 826-3160 for information.

Game fields are available at Mid-America and Mid-America West sports complexes, Shawnee Mission, Stoll, and Heritage parks. Court rentals are available at the Roeland Park Sports Dome, New Century Fieldhouse, and Okun Fieldhouse. New Century Fieldhouse also has field and room rentals.

Mildale Farm Mildale Farm is Johnson County Park & Recreation District’s premier event facility and the perfect venue for any special event. The on-site facilities feature unique lodging and large event accommodations beautifully situated on 22 rolling acres. The property allows for indoor and outdoor events hosting up to 400 guests.

The Theatre in the Park: Corporate/Special Events Located on 10 acres in the northeast corner of Shawnee Mission Park, The Theatre in the Park is one of the best outdoor venues in the metro area. This venue is perfect for special events, festivals, corporate gatherings, fundraising events, and other public attractions where you need a large amount of space, a city-wide location, and a reasonable price.

Specializing in Weddings Looking for a park setting for your special day? Ceremony, reception or both? Want something larger than a backyard or living room?

The Pavilion at The Theatre in the Park The Pavilion is located adjacent to The Theatre in the Park. This spectacular structure features a limestone fireplace, a fire pit, attached restrooms, and ample parking. The Pavilion has picnic table seating for up to 240 guests and allows for additional seating to accommodate up to 400 guests.

Either way, JCPRD has several wedding event options to choose from.

TimberRidge Adventure Center The TimberRidge Adventure Center offers both indoor and outdoor facilities. The Whispering Pine shelter accommodates 200 people, is equipped with a limestone fireplace, attached restrooms, and overlooks scenic Catfish Pond. The Welcome Center includes a full size kitchen, restroom facilities, a large outdoor deck which wraps around the building, and can accommodate 80 people. Other available amenities include: challenge course, Hawk’s Nest Climbing Tower, canoes, pedal boats, archery, BB gun range, hiking, and fishing. Call (913) 856-8849 for information.
