coastal begins fall semester with record first-day enrollment M
arking a major milestone and reflecting growing demand across its academic programs, the College of Coastal Georgia launched the fall semester with nearly 4,000 students on campus for day one.This record-breaking start positions the College to surpass its official all-time enrollment record of 3,663 students, set in 2016, pending the official census count later this term. Among the record-setting numbers is the College’s largest Dual Enrollment cohort to date, with more than 550 high school students joining from the local area and across the state. This is the second consecutive year that the College has surpassed its previous record. Last year’s record enrollment was 502 students. The campus is also welcoming its largest residential population ever, filling oncampus residence halls to capacity and expanding housing partnerships with local hotels and apartment complexes to accommodate unprecedented growth. “Today marks an exciting start to the academic year at the College of Coastal Georgia,” said College of Coastal Georgia President Dr. Johnny Evans Jr. “We are on track to set new enrollment records and are proud to welcome such a vibrant and dynamic group of students to Mariner Country. Their presence reflects the growing confidence students and families have in the quality and value of a Coastal Georgia education.” 10

coastal launches new academic concentrations T
he College of Coastal Georgia is excited to welcome the 2026-2027 academic year with significant investments in academic excellence, student success, and workforce readiness. This fall, the College has added 24 new faculty members, including 14 full-time faculty members and 10 part-time faculty members, while also introducing three new academic concentrations. The new concentrations—Spatial Analytics and Wetlands Ecology in the Bachelor of Science in Environmental Science and Strength and Conditioning in the Bachelor of Science in Health Sciences—reflect the College’s commitment to providing students with innovative, career-focused educational opportunities that prepare graduates to excel in emerging fields. The Spatial Analytics concentration will equip students with skills in geographic information systems (GIS), data visualization, mapping technologies, and spatial data analysis. As industries increasingly rely on location-based data to guide decision-making, students will be prepared for careers in government, environmental management, business analytics, urban planning, and related fields. The Wetlands Ecology concentration leverages the College’s unique location along Georgia’s coast, providing students with opportunities to study one of the nation’s most significant ecological resources. Students will gain knowledge in environmental science, conservation, coastal ecosystems, and resource management while preparing for careers in environmental stewardship, research, and policy. The Strength and Conditioning concentration will provide students with advanced training in exercise science, human performance, athletic development, and fitness programming. Graduates will be well prepared for careers in sports performance, fitness coaching, rehabilitation support, and related health and wellness professions. The concentration will also position the Health Sciences program to pursue accreditation through the National Strength and Conditioning Association, connecting students to a global network of professionals advancing best practices in exercise science. A new course, Foundations of Personal Training, will also be introduced, giving students the opportunity to sit for a certification exam and become certified personal trainers. 11
ARCHIVIST’S LOG: CHARTING THE COLLEGE’S HISTORY
“50 Years Since the Hargett Building Dedication”
Hello everyone! My name is Mylynda and I serve as a Librarian & Archivist at the Gould Memorial Library. For this month’s issue of “Archivist’s Log: Charting the College’s History,” I would like to highlight that this year marks the 50th anniversary of the dedication of the Earl Forest Hargett Administration Building.
T
his is one of the original structures constructed for the opening of our institution in 1964. At this time, our institution was called Brunswick College. While this anniversary may not be as widely recognized as some of the college’s other milestones, it offers an opportunity to reflect on the legacy of our institution’s first president and one of the campus’s most enduring buildings. This building has always been used for administration purposes, and for the first several years it also housed the Clara Wood Gould Memorial Library. The library eventually moved into its own building in 1973. In the fall of 1975, Dr. Teel, the institution’s second president, proposed naming the building in honor of Earl F. Hargett, the college’s first president, who passed unexpectedly in 1971. On November 12, 1975, the Georgia Board of Regents formally authorized the naming of the building to become the Earl Forest Hargett Administration Building. The dedication ceremony took place on May 2, 1976.

To better understand the significance of this structure being named the “Earl F. Hargett Administration Building,” one must take a closer look at the life of Earl F. Hargett. He was born on September 8, 1924, in Golden, Mississippi, to Gilbert and Roxie Hargett. He served in the United States Navy from 1943 to 1946. After his military service, he decided to continue his education. He earned his bachelor’s degree from State Teachers College (now University of North Alabama) in 1949 and his master’s degree from George Peabody College in 1950. The Georgia Board of Regents named Hargett as the institution’s first president on December 11, 1963. During his tenure, he oversaw the beginnings of our institution and helped create both the physical and community foundations that still support the college today. For example, while living in Brunswick, he helped to establish the Coastal Georgia Historical Society and served as their first president.Hargett was also beloved by his students, who referred to him as the “Chief Lion,” a nod to the institution’s mascot at the time. He resigned in 1968 to complete his doctoral studies and earned his doctorate from the University of Tennessee in 1969.

Hargett passed away on July 1, 1971, due to a heart attack after completing his first day as the new college president of Lincoln College in Lincoln, Illinois. He was only 46 years old. He is buried at Joel Cemetery in Dennis, Mississippi. The Hargett Building has undergone many renovations over the years, which is not surprising as it was one of just a handful of buildings constructed for the opening of the college in 1964. Today, several offices and departments are housed within this building, such as Human Resources and the President’s Office. The front lobby is decorated with artwork created by local artists, which has been a wonderful way for our institution to build relationships and collaborate with those in the Coastal Georgia community. Over the years, numerous students, staff, faculty, administrators, alumni, and visitors have walked through the Hargett Administration Building. As one of the original structures, it has witnessed our institution’s growth and transformation from its origins as Brunswick College in 1964 to today’s College of Coastal Georgia. Furthermore, 50 years after its dedication, the Earl Forest Hargett Administration Building (now referred to as Hargett Hall) remains an important part of daily life on campus, and it is lasting reminder of the leadership and vision of our institution’s first president.
