National Register of Historic Places – 25th Anniversary
Our Mission is to welcome people of all ages to the John Hay Estate at The Fells, making each visit an enriching experience with opportunities to explore and learn from our natural lakeside setting, our renowned historic buildings and gardens, and the historic achievements of three generations of Hay family visionaries.
We are excited to celebrate the 25th Anniversary of being listed on the National Register of Historic Places. This is a significant achievement for our local ‘treasure’ on Lake Sunapee, and we are very fortunate to have this historic treasure in our community.
Our Vision Our Vision is a restored and preserved John Hay Estate at The Fells on Lake Sunapee that: • Draws people together to share interests in history, gardens, our natural setting, and the protection of the lake; • Stimulates further their pursuit of those interests by offering enriching educational programs and events that feature three generations of Hay family visionaries; • Provides access that lets visitors enjoy their John Hay Estate experience within a safe, tranquil environment.
The National Register of Historic Places is like a treasure map of our nation’s most cherished landmarks. It’s not just a list; it’s a promise to honor and protect the places that tell our stories. By recognizing these culturally significant sites, the National Register helps ensure that future generations can walk in the footsteps of history. It brings together communities, property owners, and history enthusiasts to celebrate and preserve our shared heritage. This effort isn’t just about buildings and locations; it’s about keeping the spirit of our past alive, so we can all feel a deeper connection to the places that shaped us. The John Hay Estate is more than just a beautiful property; it’s a living testament to the evolution of American architecture and the Hay family’s vision. Starting as a humble summer retreat in the 1890s, this estate blossomed into a grand showcase of the colonial revival style by the early 20th century. With each passing year, the Hays poured their hearts into transforming their pastoral getaway into a magnificent estate, complete with stunning gardens, elegant terraces, and breathtaking vistas. Imagine walking through these gardens, feeling the same sense of wonder and pride that the Hay family must have felt. Every corner of the estate tells a story of dedication, love, and a deep appreciation for beauty and history.
The property is significant based on three National Register criteria: • First, it is an important example of the summer home movement of NH. In the post-Civil War era this movement became an important factor in the state’s economy and was supported by John M. Hay. • Second, it is the only surviving home associated with the adult life of John M. Hay, Assistant Private Secretary to President Lincoln, Ambassador to Great Britain, and Secretary of State under Presidents McKinley and Roosevelt. Continued on Page 2
