It’s time again to honor the Best of the Best—the prestigious Jewelers’ Choice Awards, created by JCK magazine in 2008. The concept? To encourage designers to create innovative, yet salable, pieces of jewelry and let the nation’s top retailers vote for their favorites. The winning designs are then promoted to the trade and within just a few months can be found in the showcases of top jewelry stores around the world.

For an entry fee of $575, companies were invited to submit their newest designs, which would receive print and online exposure as well as the opportunity to become a JCK Jewelers’ Choice Award winner. Voting was open from Nov. 15, 2016, until Jan. 16, 2017, to retailers who logged on to jewelerschoiceawards.com to view the selection of entries in the various merchandise categories.

“We’re always excited by the amazing number of new companies participating, many of which placed in this year’s awards,” says JCK publisher Mark Smelzer. Included in this group are ALOR, Beverly K, Brilliant Earth, CJ Jewels International LLC., Cynthia Britt, East Arts Jewelry Mfy. Ltd., Eight Moons Jewelry, Gravure Commitment by Atlantic, Julez Bryant, Karl Lagerfeld, Les Georgettes, Meredith Marks, Messika, Neeta Gupta, PiYaRO, Rajola S.p.A., and White Pine Trading.

In addition, we’d like to acknowledge the following for placing in four-plus categories each: Alamea Hawaii LLC, Belle Étoile, Gabriel & Co., Jye’s International, Lika Behar Collection, Maui Divers Jewelry, Neon Gems, Parlé Jewelry Designs, and Shy Creation.

Congratulations to this year’s grand prize winner, Shy Creation, for their entry in the Best Ring Under $2,500 Category. Featured on the front cover, their award-winning starburst ring, which is part of their Kate collection, features .58 ct. t.w. pavé-set diamond rays in 14k yellow gold, and has a suggested retail price of $1,490.

Jewelers’ Choice prizes were awarded in 21 categories, including diamonds, colored gemstones, colored diamonds, pearls, tanzanite, lab-grown diamonds and/or gemstones, gold, silver, platinum, mixed metals, men’s, personalized, fashion/bridge, contemporary metals, and price point, each divided into price levels. Merchandise divisions included bridal, bracelets, earrings, necklaces, rings, and best statement piece.

JCA 5 FAVES 2017 EDITORS’ PICKS For the fourth year in a row, we asked the JCK editorial team to cast their (hypothetical) votes in the Jewelers’ Choice Awards. See which pieces—among all the entries—they chose as their favorites and why they love them.

Melissa Rose Bernardo, managing editor Gabriel & Co. necklace (Best Necklace Design, Under $2,500) There’s nothing I love more than everyday jewelry, and Gabriel & Co. has everyday down to a science. With 0.37 ct. t.w. diamonds, this necklace boasts an impressive amount of sparkle, but not too much for, say, an office setting. And the mini spikes—each less than half an inch long—give the piece just a touch of edge.

Victoria Gomelsky, editor-in-chief Yael Designs earrings (Best Earring Design, $2,500Ð$10,000) The opal’s painterly palette has always reminded me of the earth as seen from outer space—in other words, it’s mesmerizing! Yael Designs channels my affection for the gem into these statement-making white gold earrings whose silhouette balances the artful look of the opal with a frame of tiny princess-cut diamonds that recall fireworks.

I also love how versatile it is, considering its statement-making proportions. Naturally, the piece would pair well with a gown—but it would work just as well with a jeans-and-sweater ensemble. My kind of design!
