RIVERLIGHT December 2020
Dear All Readers

Welcome to read our last issue of River Light this year. Have dreams! Be determined!
'Everyone should have dreams. No matter what circumstances you are facing, as an active citizen, you shall take that as a positive opportunity. This year is unique and you will grow as a person and as a leader', I remembered one of my mentors told me about this. That is true.
This year I have experienced a lot. Despite the COVID-19 pandemic, JCI Sha Tin has successfully managed to keep the projects/events going and serve our community, and raise the membership morale. Members innovated Werewolf to keep the bonding during social distancing measures, whilst members did not stop their dreams and continue to implement the projects, like Love of the Earth and Project Insight.
My tenure as President has almost come to an end. I am so glad that we, as a team, have overcome different challenges this year, for example, by live streaming we successfully expanded the impact of our projects in virtual world. Every live post/feed has reached over 80,000 views. This attitude and effort paved the way to our success this year at the 55th National Convention of JCI Hong Kong. JCI Sha Tin has obtained, a recent record high, 4 awards to appreciate the teams’ efforts and our members.
Congratulations to the entire team! I am so proud of you all and this is an honor for me to have you all on board and catch dreams together this year. It will be my never forgettable memories in my journey.
“Be Dream Catchers”! Thank you all of you for your support this year and I wish you all stay healthy.

Cover Story: Interview with Stark Chan Yik-hei, BBS When Newton’s First Law meets Gravity
A meteoroid is a space rock drifting in the galaxy. When a meteoroid is attracted and enters into a planet, it becomes a meteor (shooting star). Eventually, it hits the ground.
Stark Chan Yik-hei, BBS, best known as the first “Son of the star” in Hong Kong since an asteroid (20780 Chanyikhei) was named after him by Lincoln Near-Earth Asteroid Research under the Ceres Connection program given to his achievement in a science competition, is now CEO & Co-founder of Bull.B Technology Limited with more than 30 employees while he is only 31.

Stark shared with JCI Sha Tin that his interest in invention came for certain reasons. Stark in his childhood was like a rock drifting in space by inertia and searching for meaning, the growth environment was silent, boring but evolving like the galaxy. Stark had nothing to play but disassembling and refitting electrical appliances at home, and somehow this inertia cultivated him a meaning of purpose. In 2004, Stark won a large science fair in the United State with a robot for domestic security and thus had an asteroid named him. Meanwhile, the rock was granted a name, 20780 Chanyikhei.

However, the rock still cannot locate a star that is attractive enough to fit in. As the “star” title suggests, Stark is determined to be a unique star and has his own ‘gravity’ to draw others in. When Stark graduated from the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology in 2011, he founded Bull.B Technology Limited instead of applying for a job in a laboratory since he wanted to create a platform where his creativity could be fully utilized when he cannot find a place like this in the market. On the other hand, Stark thinks that entrepreneurship can attract people with the same destination of facilitating society by innovation. Can you see that the 20780 Chanyikhei asteroid has jumped into another dimension? The definition of success for Stark now is to help others to reach their success by his platform while his company can constantly provide values to society.
Dream or Daydream? The future belongs to those who realise the dream.
Hello my audiences, the galaxy is really mysterious and spectacular, right? Let us adjust our telescope and observe the subtle movement of the space where the 20780 Chanyikhei asteroid has jumped into. Turbulence and gas motions are now spreading there. COVID-19 pose a threat to business, especially small to medium size corporates specialized in technology fields. Stark shared that the business model of a technology company usually required a longer lead time to generate considerable revenue compared to other businesses. While the shortage of cash flow is much more severe in start-ups, a sudden accident like the pandemic can be devastating to them. Stark believes that constant funding support to technology start-ups will definitely be helpful for getting over their early hard stage.
To respond to the impacts the pandemic brought to our community, Bull.B Technology Limited collaborated with a garment maker to manufacture a reusable photocatalyst mask that can be sanitized with a UV sterilization bag, giving a hand to ease the city’s panic of mask shortage. Moreover, the app ‘School Parent Corner’ is launched as a smart school management platform for students, schools, teachers, and parents, to keep them connected to school life while classes are suspended.

If the universe is all about gravity, then life is all about inspiration. The journey of Stark may be quite different if he has a ‘normal’ childhood. When we are born into this world, most of us are innocent and ‘inertially’ grow like a space rock drifting with a certain trajectory. In several moments of life, some of us are inspired or ‘attracted’ by some stories or something, and have our minds changed. In echo to our chapter's slogan of the year "Be a Dream Catcher", there is an expectation of catching both self and others’ dreams. To catch others’ dreams, we do not need to have an asteroid to be named after or start a business but to be attractive and inspirative.
If part of you sparks one’s desire, you have already given a hand to catch others’ dreams. It is our pleasure if this interview with Stark can give you a little inspiration.
