About Junior Chamber International (JCI) Malta JCI Malta aims to be the recognised organisation that is the forum for the development of bold and stimulating leaders within our community. We aspire to provide our members with the opportunity to develop leadership skills, social responsibility, fellowship and entrepreneurship for the advancement of the individual and the community in general. JCI (Junior Chamber International) is a membership-based non-profit organization of 200,000 young people in their 20s and 30s in 5,000 communities and more than 115 countries around the world. The Sustainable Development Goals (#GlobalGoals) On 1 January 2016, the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development — adopted by world leaders in September 2015 at an historic UN Summit — officially came into force. Over the next fifteen years, with these new Goals that universally apply to all, countries will mobilize efforts to end all forms of poverty, fight inequalities and tackle climate change, while ensuring that no one is left behind. The SDGs build on the success of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and aim to go further to end all forms of poverty. The new Goals are unique in that they call for action by all countries, poor, rich and middle-income to promote prosperity while protecting the planet. They recognize that ending poverty must go hand-in-hand with strategies that build economic growth and address a range of social needs including education, health, social protection, and job opportunities, while tackling climate change and environmental protection. The JCI Malta #GlobalGoals Awards Programme For decades, Junior Chamber International (JCI) has been recognising individuals from all over the world between the ages of 18 to 40 for their outstanding contribution towards the betterment of society through the Ten Outstanding Young Persons (TOYP) Awards programme. On a yearly basis, this international awards programme celebrates many unsung heroes who, by way of their artistic, academic, technological skill or by means of their entrepreneurial, environmental, moral leadership and human rights activism have made a sustainable positive impact in our communities. Although the TOYP Awards programme remains the official programme at an international level and a very effective one, this year JCI Malta took a proactive approach in recognising the fact that, if we are to truly encourage civic society, world & business leaders to seriously take into consideration the Global Goals in their actions and strategies, then due visibility is required. We believe that there are many inspiring individuals out there who, consciously or unconsciously, are working actively towards achieving these goals. This awards programme remains within the spirit of the TOYP programme and hence nominees would still have the chance to be recognised internationally.

General Rules of the Nomination Process 1. 2.
Anyone including friends, family & colleagues can nominate individuals for these awards Nominees must be between the ages of 18 and 40. Nominees born before January 1 of the preceding year are not eligible for the JCI Malta #GlobalGoals Awards. 3. A copy of the ID/Birth Certificate should be uploaded along with the nomination form to prove the age of the nominee. 4. A good quality (300 dpi) head-and-shoulders photograph must be uploaded with the official nomination form 5. The nominee must be a long-term resident of Malta. 6. Nominees do not need to be members of JCI. 7. Nominees CANNOT be a current member of the Board at the International, National or Local levels. 8. Following submission, the nominee shall receive a copy of the nomination form from the Awards committee to verify that the details and facts contained in the form are correct and provide consent for his/her details to be published for public viewing. 9. Photographs, audiotapes, videos will be used during the judging process for certain categories & as proof of the nominees work. If a candidate is selected as one of the ten international honorees, however, these items will be requested by JCI World Headquarters. 10. Nominees must be willing to promote the ideals of JCI for the year after winning the award. 11. Each nominee must be entered in ONLY ONE (1) of the following categories: • • • • • • • •

The JCI Malta #GlobalGoals Awards Categories CATEGORY 1: IMPACTFUL POLITICS AWARD
Category A: Young impactful politician Any persons between the ages of 18 and 40 who are active at a political level in their communities, whether through being elected as a representative on the local council or affiliated with a political organisation/pressure group that is actively working towards any of the Sustainable Development Goals. This award excludes any MEPs or currently elected MPs within the eligible age bracket. Category B: Most SDG Conscious Local Council This award shall recognise the local council whose mayor or councillor is between the ages of 18 to 40 and has participated most actively in promoting and/or implementing any of the Sustainable Development Goals.

The JCI Malta #GlobalGoals Awards Categories CATEGORY 2: IMPACTFUL REPORTER AWARD
Category A: Print Media This award recognises coverage by news journalists, bloggers and writers that, as a result of their work, have made an impact in one of the following areas: increased public awareness of the SDGs, the principles of democracy, sustainable development, universal human rights, environmental protection, social justice, equality & dignity of all people worldwide. Category B: Visual Media This award recognises coverage by photographers/visual media artists that, as a result of their work, have made an impact in one of the following areas: increased public awareness of the SDGs, the principles of democracy, sustainable development, universal human rights, environmental protection, social justice, equality & dignity of all people worldwide.

The JCI Malta #GlobalGoals Awards Categories CATEGORY 3: THE SDG CONSCIOUS ARTIST AWARD
This award recognises artists (visual, literature and performing) whose practice brings about a social consciousness through their subject matter, or through any of the materials they use. The work of art should promote the principles of democracy, sustainable development, universal human rights, environmental protection, social justice, equality & dignity of all people worldwide. CATEGORY 4: THE HEALTHY LIFESTYLE AND WELLBEING AWARD
This award recognises and celebrates individuals who create activities, strategies & products that empower the communities’ and individuals’ health as well as address the wider social determinants of health.

This award recognizes individuals that have created some form of technology/application to achieve any of the following objectives: • Improve nutrition & promote sustainable agriculture; • Promote healthy lifestyles & promote well-being for all at all ages; • Promote inclusive quality education & promote lifelong learning opportunities; • Promote availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation; • Build resilient infrastructure, promote inclusive and sustainable industrialization; • Achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls; • Promote peaceful and inclusive societies & provide access to justice for all; • Sustainable consumption and production patterns; • Conservation and sustainability of marine life; • Protection and promotion of sustainable ecosystems.

The JCI Malta #GlobalGoals Awards Categories CATEGORY 6: THE ENVIRONMENTAL SUSTAINABILITY AWARD
This award recognises professionals or business persons that have followed one or more than one of the following practices:• Water: measures to increase efficiency and effluent treatment strategies along with water harvesting and replenishment strategies; • Waste: Including efforts towards reuse and recycle; • Packaging Innovations in product packaging: Reduction in end consumer disposables or the use of compostable materials the nature of waste disposed, hazardous; • Minimising the use of the carbon footprint for economic and environmental gain; • Transport –aviation, vehicular or shipping – right from securing raw material up to the distribution of final products through retail networks; • Energy: innovative and progressive approaches to reduce dependency on fossil fuels; not limited to, energy efficiency strategies, ICT, retrofitting and switching to renewable energy sources.

The JCI Malta #GlobalGoals Awards Categories CATEGORY 7: QUALITY EDUCATION AWARD
This award recognises outstanding efforts of individuals, organizations engaged in activities or contribution to the education such as; improving the performance and effectiveness of students (outside school hours). Anyone who spends their time teaching students (outside school hours) through projects or otherwise topics which include the respect for human rights, the environment, peace and tolerance and cultural diversity or any other Sustainable Development Goal. CATEGORY 8: THE OUTSTANDING ACTIVE CITIZEN AWARD
This award recognizes young individuals between 18 and 40 years of age who, out of their own initiative and dedication are contributing in someway to the promotion of the SDGs, promoting the principles of democracy, sustainable development, universal human rights, environmental protection, social justice, equality & dignity of all people worldwide.

JUDGING PROCESS After the deadline for submitting nominations has expired, all nominations will be screened by a JCI Malta appointed sub-committee to ensure that the general rules have been adhered to and all details listed in the nomination form are valid and correct. Once the screening exercise is concluded, the nomination form and pertinent information is passed on to a panel of 5 international judges for independent evaluation. The judges will asked to base their decisions on three general criteria: (1) How well the nominee exemplifies the principles of the Global Goals and JCI Values; (2) How the person’s achievement may have benefited his or her community, nation or the world; (3) How the person’s achievement or leadership may have inspired others. In the first round, the judges will be requested to select the top 30 candidates regardless of category. Judges will select the top 30 finalists by assigning 30 points to the top candidate, 29 to first-runner-up and 28 to the third-runnerup and so on. The 30 nominees with the most cumulative points shall be the finalists. The procedures for the final round of judging will be the same as for the first round of judging. Judges will select the top ten finalists by assigning 10 points to the top candidate, 9 to the first-runner-up and 8 to the third-runner-up and so on. The nominees with the most cumulative points will be recognized as the honorees. A maximum of 10 honorees will be awarded.
