JCI – Junior Chamber International
JCI is a membership-based nonprofit organization of young active citizens ages 18 to 40 in more than 100 countries who are engaged and committed to creating impact in their communities. Active citizens are individuals invested in the future of our world. They develop the skills, knowledge and understanding to make informed decisions and take action. JCI members are active citizens from all sectors of society. Business owners. Government officials. Doctors. Entrepreneurs. Teachers. Public officials. Social workers. Students. JCI members embrace new ideas, collaboration and diversity.

JCI Around the World
With around 5,000 JCI Local Organizations in more than 100 nations, JCI forms a vibrant global community of nearly 200,000 active citizens. All members belong to a JCI Local Organization where they focus on finding solutions to issues in their community. The collective action of all JCI Local Organizations forms a global grassroots movement, empowering members to run effective projects, exchange ideas and work together to develop new ways to improve their communities and the world.
The JCI Active Citizen Framework
Sustainable impact is achieved through collective action of active citizens across local communities. Designed to address all types of community issues, JCI members are guided by the JCI Active Citizen Framework, which provides a methodology for conducting impactful projects. The process consists of assessing community needs, formulating sustainable solutions and evaluating results to ensure sustainability. Community partners, business owners and government officials are engaged throughout each step of the process. The collaborative ownership of challenges and solutions by all community stakeholders is what produces sustainable impact.
Global Impact
As active citizens, JCI members are not just focused on charity or service to the community. Active citizenship is about creating sustainable impact. Through active citizenship, we encourage young people to take responsibility for local issues, and find targeted, sustainable solutions that benefit our communities and the world. Guided by the passion to lead the world in a new direction, JCI members have the courage to address the critical challenges of our time. Solutions to these challenges can only be reached by involving all sectors of society. JCI will be the driving force to unite government, businesses and the civil sector to collaborate for impact.
The History of JCI
JCI’s founder Henry Giessenbier, Jr. decided to take responsibility for the progress of his community when he established JCI’s first Local Organization in St. Louis, USA in 1915. When delegates from eight countries met in Mexico City in 1944, they agreed it was time to officially form Junior Chamber International (JCI). This tradition of uniting young active citizens across cultures, backgrounds and borders fueled the JCI movement and set the groundwork for taking action to create a better world.
Over 21 Years of Local Impact
The process to set up JCI in Malta began in 1993 when a group of fresh graduates from University had a dream to provide a platform where young people can develop into leaders and be agents of positive change. It was thanks to the power of networking that the group got to know of Junior Chamber International and in 1994 JCI Malta was officially established.
JCI Malta within the International Community
On an annual basis JCI Malta sends delegates to the JCI World and European Congress, the European Presidents Meeting and the JCI Academy. Various members also make use of additional international opportunities and trainings provided by JCI around the world. In addition to these events JCI Malta has brought the European Conference to Malta in 2014, and organises international trainings bringing delegates from various National Organisations on a regular basis. JCI Malta is also bidding to host the European Presidents Meeting in 2019.
