Message Dear Ardent Readers, Welcome to the First Edition of JCI CITY PLUS' 2022 newsletter. What better way to feel the pulse of JCI CITY PLUS than to go through the newsletter which acts as a nexus of the series of events during the first quarter of the year.

The Pandemic may have been influencing the conduct of our day to day operations, especially when it comes to down to serving our community, however, amidst such a pool of uncertainties during the COVID 19 crisis, JCI CITY PLUS has continued to sustain its projects such as the Post Wakashio XMAS, Sustainability Project, Anou Koz Lor COVID-19 and others.

I would also like to seize the opportunity to congratulate the new board members who have just stepped in this new mandate. It is undeniably true to say that, it is people combined with the right breadth and depth which helps to develop a conducive ecosystem in an organisation.

Last but not the least, I would like to sincerely thank my Editorial Team for the effort and time allocated. I had the chance to be

Message

Dear Readers Live your life in such a way that when you die, the world cries while you rejoice.

It is with immense pleasure for me to share my message as your Local President in our first newsletter for 2022.

We have a tendency to tell ourselves that we will do it after or “when we will have it” but that ideal time never comes. Like Robin Sharma said it, if you don’t act on life, life has a habit of acting on you.

Hence as active citizens, ask yourself what legacy you will leave behind.

Our first Quarter has been absolute thrilling as we managed to successfully host the first National flagship project of 2022, the JCI

Mauritius Debate Championship and we are in full speed mode for the 2022 JCI Mauritius Outstanding Young Person (TOYP). We also partnered with JCI New York City for a series of training for the Global Leadership Sprint as part of our international cooperation. We are also cognizant of the various problems engulfing our society and have successfully launched our Anou Koz Lor COVID-19 project and are in the pipeline for revamping up our Sustainability project. The sessions with Port-Louis Toastmasters Club and Curepipe Ju Jitsu Self Defence Association have also shown our commitment this year to embrace our motto to make our members the next Gen of enterprising leaders!

However we are not stopping here and I can tell you that Quarter two would be even more enthralling as we are planning various projects and surprises including a fun games night!

Last but not the least, I also wish to convey my gratitude to my Board for toiling hard, our members, senators and aspiring members for their support for making our organisation shine bright and our Editorial team for pulling off this amazing newsletter!

2022 JCI Mauritius National President

Message Dear Readers, It is with immense pleasure that I am addressing you as the 2022 JCI Mauritius National President in this first edition of JCI City Plus newsletter of the year.

JCI City Plus has a great pool of experienced members, senators and aspiring members.

The Local Organisation can indeed benefit from these enriching experience and bring its willingness to create positive impact in the society to new heights.

Since its creation, JCI City Plus is known to be very active in creating great leaders who have occupied national and international posts. This year,under the leadership of Local President Ben Venkatakistnen and his board, JCI City Plus has been indeed very active in terms of the local, national and international aspect.

In the Local context, they have been working on their RISE project with the entrepreneurs whereby it involves empowerment and in their project with local communities of Cité La Chaux. In terms of national perspective, JCI City succesfully organised the JCI Mauritius Debate Competition including the training by Mrs. Vimi Appadoo from Dale Carnegie in the month of March. .

Message The Local Organisation is also hosting the 36th edition of JCI Mauritius Top Young Outstanding Person of this year whereby the press conference was conducted on 22nd March 2022 and the application would be open till 10th April 2022.

In terms of international aspect, JCI City Plus had collaborated with JCI New York to organise several editions with different well known speakers of ‘Global Leadership Sprint’ for youngsters who aspire to be the change makers, who want to future proof their lives and their legacies with the skill sets required in the future. .

Since 2020, JCI has introduced JCI Rise as a new framework to allign ptojects in this pandemic era. It is interesting to note that JCI City Plus has been working to allign their project to this new direction.

Every year is full of opportunites and challenges. I hereby wish JCI City Plus to experience both these conditions, as it will help the members and the organisation to grow stronger. I look forward to reading more impactful projects from the Local Organisation this year.

2022 JCI Beau Bassin/Rose Hill Local President MESSAGE Dear Readers, greetings!

I am Lubna Isseljee and I joined my local organisation as a member in 2020.

Professionally, I am an architect and in JCI I have continued my journey as Local Vice President and now as the 2022 Local President of JCI BeauBassin/Rose-Hill.

This year, I am excited and privileged to lead a team of dynamic members. Our local projects namely Anou Planter, MindBlooms (mental health project), Entrepreneurial Outreach and Skills and Development Project are all in line the RISE initiative and the JCI Active Framework. As for JCI Mauritius Flagship projects, we are honoured to be organising the Public Speaking Championship and hopefully this year’s National Convention

For this first quarter, many of JCI Beau-Bassin/Rose-Hill members had the opportunity to be team members of the JCI Mauritius Debate Competition hosted by JCI City Plus and they have only great things to say! I am convinced that the dedication, teamwork and good spirit at JCI City Plus will definitely empower the next generation of leaders!

Board Members' PROFILE The objectives of Board members this year for JCI CITY PLUS As the Local President this year, I want to leave a legacy at the end of the year where the bond between the members has been strengthened. It is of prime importance to me that we do have this bond to help foster the synergy between those that have set down the foundation of this organisation and those who are erecting the wall.

I want to see our members deliver that positive and be on the ground as active citizens and the first quarter is a testimonial to it.

We successfully hosted the first National flagship project during the quarter one, the 2022 JCI Mauritius Debate Championship and are already on full speed for the second flagship project, 2022 JCI Mauritius Outstanding Young Person.

One more important core objective which I have set, is to get our treasury back on its rails and leave JCI City Plus stronger than when I took its reigns. There is no doubt that our members want to help bring the impact and I believe together with my Board members, we can help to set the pathway for a new generation of leaders because it is about empowering the Next Gen of Leaders!

Board Members' PROFILE The objectives of Board members this year for JCI CITY PLUS Success is credited to our extraordinary members, aspiring members and the operational excellence of the board members who are uniquely positioned to help driving quantifiable value in our projects.

As the 2022 Local Secretary, my main function is to act as an intermediary between the members, aspiring members and the board members. Effective line of communication is indeed crucial to prevent the upcoming projects being drown into doldrums. For a sustainable continuity, all communication lines should be kept open and create a culture of feedback so that all stakeholders are kept informed.

My role is also to act as stabilisers, by being a constant coach, utter guidance, and as a pedagogical mentor to our aspiring members as I have myself been followed up. Putting additional weightage, I need to keep a watch-eye on projects being held.

In the face of such responsibility, since this is a one year delegation, I need to ensure that proper administration is maintained, as an optimistic measure for the next year delegation to take over.

The world is changing and changes will only keep on accelerating with unexpected challenges being thrown at us from different directions. It is true that we cannot tackle it all but we can be inspired from the British multinational grocery retailer Tesco’s slogan, ‘Every little helps’. We strive to bring our little contribution towards a better today and tomorrow. And for that, we need you, without you nothing will be possible. Therefore, this is your time to shine while making a positive change. Uncertainty is the only certainty, but it is certain that we can only move forward with our strong members.

Board Members' PROFILE The objectives of Board members this year for JCI CITY PLUS Often, board members and members are asked to wear many different hats during their term. They should be made aware that there could always be additional expectations that arise.

Members (especially new members) should be given full support and encouragement in serving the organization.

We never stop learning. Board members and members will always have room to grow and improve. Keeping in mind that members come from various backgrounds,

demographics,

psychographics,

experiences,

and

perspectives the professional training will help each member refine their individual skills and talents for alignment with the full team and for the greater good of the non-profit.

As a Board member we must bring everyone together. It is important for everyone to feel they are involved in a collective effort for the greater good, in good times and especially in difficult times. They must believe that they are an integral member of a team focused on making an impact and making a difference.

As the LVP Skills Development, my objective this year is to provide the skills and tools needed to fulfill various responsibilities. The objective this year is to encompass learning on how to work together, strategically, and tactically, on a regular basis.

Board Members' PROFILE The objectives of Board members this year for JCI CITY PLUS

The COVID-19 pandemic has, over the last 2 years, tremendously impacted our lives. While we are still on a path of recovery from same, geo-political tensions in Eastern Europe continues to make such recovery tedious. With an inflationary spiral ever since, both the pandemic and the geo-political tensions have put increased pressure on local businesses to sustain profitability and on the local population to sustain a living.

With the above in mind, as young active citizens, our strategic priorities for 2022 should be as follows: Continued protection against COVID-19, specially in consideration of those with weakened immune systems; Mental health and resilience; Support towards local entrepreneurs and encouraging the purchase of local products; and Encouraging the local population to adopt sustainable ways of living.

As Local Vice President – Community Development, my objectives would be to develop projects centered around the above 4 themes and to see them come to fruition.

Board Members' PROFILE The objectives of Board members this year for JCI CITY PLUS Over the years, I have continuously coached and mentored people in various fields in banking, leadership, technical and communication skills both locally and internationally. This have enhanced both my professional and personal growth in becoming more proactive and knowledgeable in dealing with evolving challenges and also embracing change. I have always been a career-focused person but at present, I look forward for integrating with the youth and sharing my knowledge and skills for a better society.

I want to give back and my objectives as board member this year is to focus on my role as business development and lead new projects that will add value to JCI mission and vision. I want to be part of the organisation’s direction to contribute to both my personal achievements and to the youths and active citizens of the society. This platform will indeed assist me in identifying, nurturing and acquiring new opportunities and avenues for selfdevelopment. Furthermore, involving in JCI activities and projects will certainly help me in improving my creative, analytical, communication and organizational skills and correspondingly at becoming more of a peopleperson by linking and bonding with the community. Board Members' PROFILE The objectives of Board members this year for JCI CITY PLUS As Immediate Past President, one of my objectives will be to ensure a smooth transition with the 2022 team, which consists of stars in the making. I am very proud of the work achieved so far. They have shown team-spirit, maturity, resilience and creativity amidst challenges.

This had led to a successful first National Flagship assigned to us, the National Debate Championship, with Project Director Gooshma remoteleading it. JCI City Plus is pioneering! I am now looking forward to an exciting edition of TOYP.

As part of the transition, a good grasp of the JCI RISE Initiative is also essential as it guides us in our mission to Motivate the Workforce, Rebuild Economies and Maintain Mental Health in our community.

Now, more than ever, we are called upon to take the reigns of our future and create the change we want to see.

This is why all the

projects led by the 2022 team aim to provide solutions to some of our country's pressing needs: the fight against Covid, sustainability, economic justice, re-skilling and up-skilling and mental health.

Finally, I will be here to support New Board Members and Members in their personal growth and projects.

ASPIRING MEMBERS I am Kamini (Natasha) Ramjeet, aged 37, and working in the aviation industry as an air hostess since very long years. I hold a degree in French, in Communication Science and currently completing my Masters in Communication and PR. I am a passionate of discovering new destinations, flying, music, long drives, a nature lover and practice meditation and swimming in my free time.

I am highly aspiring to become a member of JCI since my values match that of the organisation, to empower the youngsters of today as future responsible citizens. I am presently engaged in the project ‘Anou Koz lor Covid’, which is a series of small episodes enlightening the population on Covid-19, measures to be taken and answering other pertinent questions. It is through educating the people that the nation will be capacitated and in giving that we shall receive.

I feel concerned about the safety and prosperity level of my nation and aspire to bring meaningful changes to its existence in terms of my knowledge, time and dedication, and JCI is just the right platform to meet like- minded people. I trust my contribution will resonate in inspiring more young members to join the NGO and dream of a future nation where key positions in the country will be truly attributed based on meritocracy and competence and maybe increase its ranking on the World Happiness Index.

there is one event that we Jaycees love, then that is the JCI Mauritius Active Citizens' Day. Award ceremonies are always a great way to recognise people for their hard work, outstanding achievement and service to humanity. The 2021 JCI Mauritius Active Citizens' Day was commemorated at the Hennessy Park Hotel, Ebene, Mauritius on Saturday 11th December 2021, with the theme “The Greatest Show” as we wanted to show that even with a pandemic around, the show could go on.

The organising team was led by two co-project directors namely Local Vice President Gooshma Kissoondoyal and Local Treasurer Rooma Hurreeram.

This was the second flagship project being hosted by JCI City Plus during the same year and coordinating a National Flagship Project boosted the confidence, talent of the members and demanded a collective effort from designing the invitation, event programme, assisting the guests up to the surprise segment.

We extend our heartfelt thanks to 2022 National Secretary Chrisinta Chavrimootoo for her support, Immediate Past National President Philip Chang-Ko for guidance and to all members, senators and aspiring members who contributed to make that event a success.

As part of the JCI City Plus' Post-Wakashio Project, gifts were distributed to kids at Residence La Chaux, Mahebourg. It was a way for JCI City Plus Board members and Members to end the year 2021 by bringing smiles on the faces of the children there.

We had a packed but exciting first members' meeting.

2021 Local President Chrisinta Chavrimootoo recognised local board members, members, project directors and senators who shined during 2021.

Our special guests from Port Louis Toastmasters Club and NewGen Toastmasters Club, showed us how a Toastmasters meeting is conducted and initiated us to the art of public speaking. Our members showcased their talents, and even delivered humourous speeches. Thank you to the members from both clubs!

Finally, Local President Ben distributed branded City Plus masks to everyone present with the message that Covid-19 will not slow our active citizens' efforts.

On 12 February 2022, JCI Mauritius hosted the first LOMNOM training of the year at Domaine Des Aubineaux, ForestSide. It was not only a way for the National Board members to meet with the local Board members but also to create a synergy between the various Board members of all chapters. The morning started with an information-packed Parliamentary procedures training by Senator Patrice Ferriere where we learned about various protocols to enhance the quality of our meetings.

In the afternoon, we were graced by the presence of Senator Aruna Pulton who delivered a training on Emotional Intelligence, Stress Management, Interpersonal Communication and Organisational Planning. That was funfilled especially the “burst the balloon” exercise where our member Vidasha Somarchand won it !

We ended the afternoon with a presentation by our National Secretary Chrisinta Chavrimootoo on the duties of the Local Secretary and also had Senator Heveen Kejiou and Immediate Past National President Philip Chang-Ko who delivered an insight on the neighbourhood watch sessions planned for the year. Indeed, an enriching day!

Recent adverse climatic changes and the outbreaks of diseases have highlighted the increasing importance of our actions to protect and preserve that ONE planet we live in. In line with same, JCI City Plus has recently launched a campaign “YES! To Sustainability”. Sustainability is a way of life, and this campaign aims to make sustainable living a common practice for all to adopt.

By working with various partners and stakeholders, the objective of the “YES! To Sustainability” campaign is to sensitise, educate and encourage Mauritian citizens to reduce their carbon footprints by avoiding pollution and food, water and energy wastage; increasingly making use of renewable energy sources and eco-friendly products; and growing our own food.

COVID 19 AWARENESS VIDEO DATE

Under the leadership of Local Vice President Community Development, Vikash Beelatoo, the team shot its first video as part of the Covid-19 project. The aim is to inform the public about the disease, its prevention and cure, as we slowly return to normal life.

Our two stars, Dr Aisha Azam and Dr Kamleshsingh Shadhu (JCI Curepipe), showcased their valuable knowledge, with the assistance of aspiring member Kamini Ramjeet.

On the 26th of February 2022, we were pleased to have a free Ju-Jitsu initiation by Curepipe Jujitsu Self-Defense Association for all JCI members because it is important to take care of our health despite the rush of our daily lives.

2022 JCI Mauritius Debate Championship

“The obstacles you face are… Mental barriers which can be broken by adopting a more positive approach.” – Clarence Blasier.

DATE: 26 March 2022

Debate is a huge slice of our everyday life. Defending our arguments and preparing evidence and statements require that we try to anticipate our opponents’ arguments.

Despite being so far away in Zimbabwe, Local Vice-President Gooshma Kissoondoyal, took up the challenge to be the Project Director for the 2022 JCI Mauritius Debate Championship. From the budget handling, training, catering for the food and beverages up to handling the logistic, the team left no stone unturned.

Our sincere thanks to the various members who were on the project especially JCI Beau Bassin/Rose-Hill who had sent several members for the project to help make it a success for both the training and the final which took place on 5th March 2022 and 26th March 2022 respectively.

Our sincere gratitude also goes to Local President Ben and Deputy National President Tasweena for their support and guidance throughout the project.

Last but not the least, congratulations to the Winning Team, JCI Quatre-Bornes and Mr Keshav Purahoo for winning the title of best speaker.

JCI Mauritius The Outstanding Young Person Award (TOYP) serves to formally recognise young people who excel in their chosen fields and create positive change. By recognising these young people, JCI raises the status of socially responsible leaders in this world. The honorees motivate their peers to seek excellence and serve others. Their stories of discovery, determination and ingenuity inspire young people to be better leaders and create better societies.

The motto of this year's edition is "Nou Zeness, Nou Lavenir" under the leadership of Project Director Vanshinee Bhirugnath. No efforts were spared as the team did a press conference, a radio intervention and several outreach actions to unearth those hidden gems who create positive change in their communities. Stay tuned as we announce the nominees!

INTERNATIONAL EXPOSURE

My journey as a Jaycee began in JCI City Plus, where I was surrounded by absolutely fantastic people, all of whom inspired me to be better. Suddenly, a world full of possibilities stood in front of me. All I needed was the will to identify what are the skills I want to acquire and the aspiration to create positive change.

After having spent some time as an aspiring member, I came to the conclusion that I belonged in the JCI world. Little did I know, my life would rapidly evolve into that of a young active citizen. Here was a plethora of opportunities to work on various projects which impacted my community and beyond! During my first year as a Jaycee, I worked on a road sign cleaning project, along with some amazing Jaycees I got to paint a school, I got to plan events and so much more. I even had the chance to be part of the Africa Middle East conference and witness the magic of teamwork at the level of JCI Mauritius. JCI provided me with development opportunities during the conference by being the master of ceremony for the opening ceremony and the morning show. I also had the chance to be part of the debate team which won the debate Championship in 2019. All of these opportunities culminated in winning Best New Member at the level of JCI Mauritius. Throughout my short journey in the chapter, JCI City Plus taught me that I must lead in thoughts, words, actions and results. I realized that through every project we do, there is always something new we can learn and that is how leadership skills are best developed.

When I joined JCI New York City, I discovered a chapter which focuses on creating solutions for tomorrow, I saw myriad of opportunities to further demonstrate that JCI is a solution-provider that can bring results to every community. I was warmly welcomed to the chapter, where I could continue Page 33

to spend my weekends and evenings doing something which would improve my skills and network.

JCI New York City is a forward-looking Chapter, so much so that it won the Visionary Chapter award in JCI USA in 2020. As a champion for progress and innovation, JCI New York City places immense value on the creativity and innovation of up-and coming leaders. Therefore, it has become customary for the chapter to have projects which help youngsters in adjusting to a rapidly changing world and keeping pace with change.

The Global Leadership Sprint is one such project and we have had the immense pleasure to partner with JCI City Plus in this endeavor along with chapters from Ireland, Cameroon, Nigeria, Philippines and Bolivia. The Global Leadership Sprint is a program for young leaders who aspire to be change makers and who want to future proof their lives, their impact, and their legacies with the skill sets required in the future. The program seeks to prepare youngsters to meet the technological demands of the market in 2025 and beyond.

According to a recent World Economic Forum report, nearly a third of the most important skill sets in 2025 will consist of technology skills not yet considered imperative to the job today. At this point in time, with rapid advances in technology, many employers are already struggling to employ the right employees who will have the skill sets which are required in the future. We therefore felt the need for JCI to reposition ourselves as an influential driving force for change.

After having carried out a survey and conducted ample research work, the chapter came up with a list of skill sets on which youngsters will be trained during the course of the year. In view that the year is divided into trimesters in the US, we dedicated the first trimester on topics to create awareness on the need to learn, unlearn and relearn. We also had the pleasure of having Mr. Atish Bagolah, who is a member of JCI City Plus as a resource person on the art of public speaking. Dr. Christian Busch who is the author of the Serendipity Mindset provided a training on the science to create good luck, Dr. Munish Jindal spoke on Artificial Intelligence and Robotics and Ms. Lena Gray spoke on Decision Making for Total Actualizing Leaders.
