Thank you for joining us today for the 14th Annual Larry Dobkin event, Tuned In - Now Showing, benefitting JCFS Chicago and Response for Teens.

In the year since last year’s event, so much has changed, evidenced

by Tuned In being virtual this year. We all know that the pandemic has brought significant challenges to our young people: The isolation, loss of routines and opportunities, and questions about the future have taken a toll. Our clinicians are managing complex cases as our waitlist has grown. Parents, schools, and community organizations reach out to us for our expertise.

Response for Teens has stepped up. We transitioned quickly to teletherapy and translated our community education programs to online platforms. Operation Snowball teen leaders have been working together remotely, preparing for a virtual or hybrid event this year.

Our work with young people is different. Grounded in respect, with a deep belief in empowering teens and young adults, Response for Teens is comfortable sitting with the messiness of adolescence and helping shift perspectives about teens’ capacities, strengths, and skills.

Response staff does this work every day because we believe in young people. We support them along a sometimes-rocky path toward greater resiliency, better decision-making, and future leadership. I thank them and thank you for your partnership in this project.

I would also like to thank our many friends at the Jewish United Fund/ Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Chicago for their ongoing support of our youth and families.

Finally, thank you to the members of our Response Advisory Council who are the driving force behind this event and the fundraising necessary for Response for Teens to continue our important work. Thank you for all of your efforts to make this event such a great success.

On behalf of the Response Advisory Council (RAC), we want to welcome all of you to our 14th annual Tuned In, the Larry Dobkin Event. We are so appreciative of you taking a stroll down the red carpet with us and for being part of our showstopping Response for Teens family. It is because of your award-winning performance that we can provide compassionate, adolescent-centered programs and services for thousands of young people in and around Chicagoland.

Our show will be starring Wendy and Walter Nathan as this year’s honorees. The Nathans are long-time Response supporters and have been deeply involved in many aspects of our community. Wendy is a past Chair of the Response Advisory Council and a long-time member of the JUF Women’s Board. Walter is currently serving on the board of the Highland Park Community Foundation and is also the Chair of the Michael Reese Health Trust. Together they are guaranteed star power.

We are so excited to showcase a very talented teen, Piper Rose, as heard on ABC’s A Million Litte Things, as our performance artist. We also will be testing your silver screen IQ with movie trivia by Howard Wallach from A-Z entertainment.

Also appearing on the big screen is the winner of our 2021 Extraordinary Adolescent Award, Olivia Ohlson-Ellis. She created hygiene kits for Evanston’s under served impacted by the pandemic, tutored kids who struggled during virtual learning and so much more! We look forward to hearing more about her accomplishments during our show.

Tuned In is the direct result of a hard-working committee. Thank you to the RAC members and JCFS staff who worked to make sure that every detail of our first virtual event is just right including the ad book, goody bags, raffle, talent, marketing, and fundraising.

March 14, 2021 Dear Nanci and Lori: What a challenging year it has been—and how fortunate we are that Response has been here to help young people in our community weather this storm.

The teenage years can be stressful under the best of circumstances, but the past year has been uniquely challenging. In addition to the usual pressures teenagers face, the demands of remote learning and the stress of social isolation have intensified the challenges to their mental health.

I’m so proud that Response has been there to help our community’s young people develop healthy coping skills, build their resilience and find their equilibrium.

As the father of one teen and one teen-in-training, I have an added appreciation for the importance of Response’s work—and an extra measure of gratitude that our community has such committed professionals and lay leaders dedicated to serving the next generation at this critical moment in time.

Special thanks and mazel tov to honorees Wendy and Walter Nathan, a couple that has devoted themselves to nurturing the health of the next generation and our entire community. Your warmth, dedication and determination have made a real impact on Jewish Chicago.

Now more than ever, it is essential that our community fosters resilience and optimism. By helping to shape strong, hopeful Jewish youth, Response is helping to shape a strong, hopeful Jewish future.

Tonight is a special occasion for Highland Park as the Jewish Child & Family Services (JCFS) Chicago honors two of our residents, Walter and Wendy Nathan. I believe that Highland Park residents “live with heart and lead with passion.” Wendy and Walter Nathan certainly embody that spirit for their outstanding commitment and support of the work of JCFS Chicago’s Response for Teens and to serving our community.

In brief, Wendy is a past Chair of the Response Advisory Council (RAC) and a supporter of Tuned In. She has also served for many years on the JUF Women’s Board and is a proud member of the Lion of Judah. Walter currently serves on the board of the Highland Park Community Foundation and as Chair of the Michael Reese Health Trust.

This year, we are excited to honor Wendy and Walter Nathan for their commitment to Response for Teens and to serving our community. Olivia Ohlson-Ellis excels at academics,the arts and sports, while still finding time to be involved in many community service projects. She is very active with Chicago's Honeycomb Project, sews quilts for children at Lurie's Children's Hospitals, bakes for cancer patients, makes plastic mats for homeless people, and writes cards to veterans. During the pandemic she took on even more projects to help others by tutoring students in need and becoming a pen pal for several local seniors.
