A MESSAGE FROM OUR CEO AND CHAIRPERSON Like the entire world, JCFS Chicago has spent this year in a state equal parts introspection and transformational change. In short, we have experienced a metamorphosis.

RELIEF FOR FAMILIES
For Alex, a happy, energetic 12-year-old with social challenges, the pandemic brought his usually busy world to a halt. With no recreation or socialization outside of his home for the first six months of the pandemic, Alex regressed in many areas. He also has difficulty wearing a mask because of sensory issues. When JCFS Chicago’s Respite services opened back up in July 2020, it was the first place Alex was able to go to have fun after months of isolation. “It was such a relief,” said Jody, Alex’s mom.
Even during Alex’s low times, Roberta and her staff embrace his challenges to ensure that he enjoys himself while under their care. They are well-prepared with an individualized plan that supports Alex’s engagement and participation at Respite. Roberta also provides Jody and Eric with regular updates about his progress. Respite goals vary depending on the child and their needs. Some examples include children developing appropriate social interactions with peers, learning to communicate their needs through gesturing and picture cards, and responding appropriately to adult directives.
JCFS offers group Respite, where children with intellectual/ developmental disabilities (I/DD) can enjoy social and recreational activities with support from our dedicated staff and volunteers. While Alex is at JCFS, Jody and her husband Eric get to spend time with Alex’s twin brother. They go on long bike rides or grocery shopping together. “Our family
really looks forward to the break from routine – especially Alex, it always puts a smile on his face. If he comes out sweaty, we know he had a good time!”

Considering capacity and safety, last year Respite DOUBLED the number of opportunities for families to get a much needed break by offering the program several Sundays a month.

RESOURCES FOR STABILITY
The pandemic has impacted all of our lives, and for some people this has meant an unexpected financial hardship. With support from Jewish United Fund (JUF), our Financial Assistance program has been able to provide emergency funds to those that need it.
Cora* is 93 years old and had been living with her daughter in their two-bedroom apartment for many years. In 2020, her daughter died from a sudden illness and Cora’s grief was insurmountable. Her daughter was the only family nearby and who she relied on for family connection, emotional support, social engagement, and financial stability.

Still grieving the death of her daughter, Cora's financial counselor connected her with JCFS counseling and chaplaincy services for emotional support. Her counselor also encouraged Cora to reach out to CJE SeniorLife for additional elder care support and to help navigate online resources.
“I was relieved to be able to stay in my apartment and pay my rent. I now have the resources to move on with my life without the fear of being displaced,” said Cora.
Shortly after her daughter passed away, the property manager raised her rent an additional $100 a month and ended the shuttle service that took residents shopping *Name changed to protect anonymity for groceries and other needs. Cora was afraid to venture out by public transportation and was not up to the travel. Neighbors would pick up groceries if they were going out, but Cora didn’t know how else to access food. She also owed several months of rent and had other unpaid bills, which led Cora to JCFS Chicago’s Financial Assistance program by her property manager. Cora was connected with a financial counselor who helped her better understand her basic monthly expenses. Together they created a monthly budget that gave her financial stability without her daughter's income. JCFS provided Cora with two months of back rent and other property expenses, along with food support and a transportation allowance. This gave Cora access to food delivery and money for a taxi

STRONGER TOGETHER
JVS Career & Employment’s Contracted Employment Services (CES) is committed to assisting adults with disabilities and other barriers to employment find and maintain jobs. CES pairs qualified candidates with open positions in janitorial and administrative support services. During this past year, these jobs were not just meaningful to the employer and employee, they were essential.
Martin and Michael are two essential workers who found employment through CES, working as shipper/packers at the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), one of CES’s government contracts. Mirek Sokalski, a Vocational Trainer, works directly with Martin and Michael to assign tasks and provide supervision. While most of the government employees were working remotely, Mirek, Martin and Michael came to the office everyday, along with seven other essential CES workers.
“For us, there is no return to Phase 5. We’ve been in it from the outset,” said Eric Kramp, Director of Contracted
Employment Services. “Our staff has continued to work and provide services to our clients and government contracts throughout the pandemic.”
The EPA was focused on digitizing their system, which for Martin and Michael meant hours of stacking, organizing, and recycling papers. After completing that project, they moved on to clearing out filing cabinets. They took the cabinets to a metal recycling plant, where materials can be sold, and the money repurposed towards the EPA’s mission of environmental stewardship. Removing the cabinets also 8
allowed for more open space as more EPA workers returned to the office.
Martin has a hearing impairment that can make understanding his tasks for the day difficult, and Michael is always patient with him to ensure he understands the days directives. Mirek described Michael as someone who is understanding in a way he has never previously experienced. “It is a very beautiful feature of Michael’s personality, and beneficial for Martin because Mike is a huge support for him. They both appreciate each other and do an outstanding job.” Throughout the pandemic, Michael and Martin remained dedicated to their work and came into the office five days a week. “The streets of Chicago were empty, less people
were in the office, but life didn’t change for Martin and Michael. They still had to wake up, take public transportation and come to work,” said Mirek. “I think work gives them a real sense of purpose,” he adds.

CREATING MEANING OUT OF LOSS
In April 2020, Nancy Wagner’s husband and best friend Alan died unexpectedly. With a large circle of friends and a close-knit family where he was known as the “funcle” to his 14 nieces and nephews, Alan’s death hit those that knew him pretty hard.
As superintendent for School District #26 in Mount Prospect, Nancy had to deal with the pressures of implementing online school during the pandemic while also facing her loss alone at home. Nancy knew she needed help. Feeling overwhelmed, her sister-in-law moved in so they could support each other as they navigated their grief. JCFS Chicago’s reputation and a visit to JCFS.org was enough for Nancy to call the JCFS Access line. She was connected with Rabbi Suzanne Griffel, part of the Jewish Community Services Chaplaincy program, which got her through the initial weeks of loss while she waited to get started with a counselor. Eventually Nancy joined a general grief support group facilitated by Marsha Raynes, LCSW, Program Manager for Bereavement Support. This became a lifeline to a community that was a vital part of Nancy’s journey.
“Marsha was able to find the golden nugget in what was being shared, shine it up and share it with the group. Her ability to make connection where others might not see it was extremely helpful,” Nancy explained. Recognizing the need of several women with similar circumstances, JCFS was able to bring them together
for a support group specific for spouse/partner loss. This group of women became very close and continue to rely on each other for support. “Grief can be very lonely and isolating. Those who are grieving during the pandemic have felt particularly alone but our groups gather people who normally would not find each other,” explained Marsha.
Meeting virtually was a silver lining for some during the pandemic since participation was a click away. Getting a hug would have been great, but the kind faces on screen could make it ok. And for Nancy, she could have her dogs Bruce and Brisket nearby, which was a comfort during this time. Visiting some of the places she and Alan used to go, people would ask about him. Now, she focuses on being happy with the questions because it means that he had an impact in the world. The limitations of the pandemic have forced people to find alternatives to funerals or shiva and figure out how to memorialize their loved ones. For Nancy, her friends planted a tree at the park where Alan played little league baseball, so she had somewhere to visit him. She recently had a celebration of life for Alan, which was a nice transition and added some closure. When asked about how she is doing today, Nancy said, “Part of my healing has been helping
others deal with their grief, which is what led me to be a speaker at two JCFS grief and loss workshops. It is something I can do to honor Alan.”

A SHINING STAR
Most would agree that school was a challenge last year when students and teachers had to shift to online learning, and then switch again to a hybrid model. A senior this year at the Knapp School and Yeshiva, Rivka was able to adapt and even thrive in both environments.

But for Rivka there were several pluses to remote school — like sleeping in and less anxiety. Having social anxiety made online learning feel safe for her and she could turn off the camera if she needed a break. Less drama and the comfort of her home made it easier for her to concentrate on her schoolwork. Since she was able to better manage her anxiety and looked forward to seeing her friends and teachers it was smooth transition back to school.

“Rivka is a joy to work with. She is thoughtful, kind and has a great sense of humor. She is intrinsically motivated and works hard to reach all her goals and will be successful in whatever path she ends up traveling,” said Carrie Patterson. Rivka knows college will be more challenging, but she is ready to tackle the world.

STACEY SHOR became the new JCFS Chicago President and Chief Executive Officer. Stacey is the first woman to lead JCFS as a combined agency, following a long tradition of female leadership. Her 25-year tenure with JCFS and commitment to our mission has prepared her for this role.
LETICIA CARDOSO, Assistant Director of Residential Supports, received the Samuel Goldsmith Award. Named for former CEO, Samuel Goldsmith of the Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Chicago, the award was established to recognize and sustain the qualities of dedication and devotion to the Jewish community and the Jewish people which marked Goldsmith's outstanding career. Leticia is the epitome of dedication—overseeing a 24-hour program with energy and grace. She continually makes a difference in so many peoples’ lives. COUNCIL ON ACCREDITATION JCFS achieved accreditation through the Council on Accreditation (COA) and we are so proud of our team for this amazing accomplishment. COA accreditation means that our programs, services, administration, and management have been rigorously evaluated and meet best practice standards. 16
NANETTE COHEN, Director of the JCFS Duman Opportunity Center, was named chair of the Department of Rehab Services (DRS) Facility Advisory Committee. The purpose of the committee is to provide an opportunity for community-based providers, DRS contractors and staff to discuss issues common to rehabilitation and placement services for people with disabilities in Illinois. Nanette also joined the Association of People Supporting Employment First (APSE) Board of Directors. APSE is a national organization focused on advancing full inclusion of people with disabilities in the workplace and community. RABBI JOSEPH S. OZAROWSKI was appointed president-elect of the National Association of Jewish Chaplains (NAJC) and facilitated spiritual care to support chaplains and mental health professionals on the local and national level during the pandemic. IPT 20TH ANNIVERSARY Our Integrated Pediatric Therapies (IPT) celebrated its 20th anniversary this year. IPT grew as an extension of care from our former preschool for students with autism. Clients would come for speech and occupational therapy then move into the preschool when they turned three years old. As clients aged out of early intervention, the program grew
to accommodate their needs. “Our treatment is not static,” shares Jennie Marble, Director of IPT. “For over two decades we have continued to adapt to meet the needs of children and their families.”

DACA Clara* is a 31-year undocumented Mexican immigrant who arrived in the United States and was awarded Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) along with its accompanying work authorization. She now works for a nonprofit organization that assists immigrants like herself in their adjustment to the United States. Clara’s employment has helped her support her mixed-status family and for that she is grateful. Since 1919, the NSA has supported JCFS Chicago’s family of services. NSA’s dedicated volunteers take pride in funding programs that enable individuals, children, and families to grow, develop and thrive throughout their lives. These programs include incentive lunches and a graduation celebration at the Knapp School, respite services, and mental health services at Highland Park High School.
