Capping another extraordinary year of serving tens of thousands of people in our community, JCFS Chicago quickly stepped up to help sustain the most vulnerable in our midst during the COVID-19 crisis.

You quickly fostered a sense of virtual community, seamlessly moving services online, from counseling and support groups to training sessions and even this event.

We are truly grateful for JCFS Chicago’s lifetransforming work and appreciate the passion and purpose your staff and volunteers devote to serving our community.

That sense of gratitude—plus our heartfelt congratulations—also extend to your 2020 Striking Event honorees, Howard Sitron and Danny Wolf.

What’s Possible Award winner Danny Wolf’s life embodies the definitive American Jewish experience of his generation. He and members of his family survived the Holocaust, rebuilt their lives in the U.S., and achieved the American Dream in founding the Bagel Restaurant, which has become a true institution in our community. An amazing story and an amazing man.

Irving B. Harris Leadership Award winner Howard Sitron is a consummate professional, a great leader and moral voice who has had an extraordinary impact on the lives of people across our Chicago community. We owe Howard a debt of gratitude, and while he may be returning to the East Coast for a much-deserved retirement, he will always be a Chicagoan to us.

Chicago, IL 60645 It is a pleasure to celebrate my dear friend Danny Wolf who is being honored for the What’s Possible Award from the JCFS for tonight’s A Striking Event. No one deserves this honor more than Danny.

I met Danny at the Bagel on Broadway many years ago and have been blessed to have him as a friend ever since. When you open the dictionary and look up the word “mensch”— there is Danny’s picture.

In the years Danny and I have worked together, he has always been one of the most authentic people I have known. We shared some very personal experiences and realized how our paths had crossed decades before in Rogers Park, Albany Park and on Kedzie avenue.

Danny Wolfe is a Chicago boy through and through. Big shoulders, big heart, and a story of survival in a truly challenging world. It is no surprise that he committed to the child welfare system, a place very near and dear to my heart.

I so respect Danny and all he stands for and has accomplished in his life. He is a strong community partner and a solid ally and friend. I know I speak for our community in wishing Danny a sincere congratulations for this honor. Our community respects and loves him very much.

Danny By Elynne Chaplik-Aleskow Author, My Gift of Now The first time I saw Danny was at the University of Illinois Chicago Circle.

He was a handsome young man with a smile that warmed and invited connection. Throughout the years I came to know a man of kindness, empathy and heart.

That Danny is being honored with the 2020 JCFS What’s Possible Award is a perfect and loving fit to who this man is. Our world does not often see real kindness. A human being who profoundly cares and who implements solutions for others is the man Danny became.

Danny has made his family institution, The Bagel, a second home for his loyal customers who are treated like friends. He and his staff have created a welcoming ambience in addition to the traditional Jewish deli treasures on the menu. A meal at Danny’s Bagel is a gift to the devoted fans who crave his restaurant’s purist creations. Danny is not only in the business of food but also creating the memories his foods inspire. Jews in particular identify The Bagel’s meals with childhood memories that filled one’s stomach with glowing satisfaction and the love of family.

And herein are the kindness, empathy and love for people that Danny feels and communicates. Danny listens. He extends empathy that has become his humanitarian efforts for organizations such as JCFS which serve people in need at a time when our world is desperate for such caring.

If my husband Richard and I were to describe Danny in one word, our adjective would be kind. This is one of his best qualities naturally offered without hesitation. Danny’s focus is on you when he communicates. He makes people know he is there for them. In addition to his major giving, Danny does the small things that make others smile and feel gratitude.

He has a core that shows strength and softness at the same time when dealing with life and people. That smile that I first noticed also shows his sparkling eyes that make one feel instantly at home in his midst.

Every Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, Danny and I find one another in synagogue. He is in the balcony and I am on the main floor. Danny and I look toward one another and smile with a blown kiss. This has become a tradition. The New Year is not complete unless we see one another from our seats and express our feelings of friendship.

If anyone embodies a What’s Possible Award, it is Danny Wolf. This is how he has lived and continues to live his life.

The development of the Seigle Campus in Skokie will be home to the renovated Goldie Bachman Luftig building and the soon to be developed Seigle Building, renewing our commitment to providing expert, caring services to this community.

The Seigle Campus will provide counseling for children and adults, career services, citizenship and immigration services, and Jewish community services including synagogue partnership, safer communities, chaplaincy, grief and loss support, addiction services and more.

The Seigle Building will be the new home for Response for Teens, featuring a teen-friendly, lounge-like lobby, modern space for counseling and outreach as well as flexible programming rooms. A large conference room will be outfitted with the latest technology as well as flexible furniture to allow for trainings, meetings and other events. A private outdoor patio adds yet more space for relaxation and collaboration.

FOSTER CARE AND FAMILY SUPPORT, our specialized foster care program, educates and supports foster parents, provides individual and family therapy, life skills classes, respite care and case management services.
