A MESSAGE FROM OUR CEO AND CHAIRMAN There is no question that Fiscal Year 2020 will be one for the history books.

The JCFS Chicago response to the impacts of COVID-19 was swift. We are proud to be at the center of supporting our community through these challenging days. The emotional well-being and disabilities services that have been the focus of our impact are all the more relevant today. With support from our unparalleled partners at Jewish United Fund, we more than quadrupled our Emergency Financial Assistance efforts and supplied our staff with the PPE they needed to safely keep our residents in their homes, support our foster care clients and keep people with disabilities in their jobs. We quickly shifted counseling, our therapeutic day school and community education online. We opened a phone line staffed by masters-level counselors — and trained community volunteers to provide connection to those feeling the impact of isolation. And as the pandemic continues, we are well-prepared to address the lingering financial, emotional and employment needs of the people we serve.

Connection really is at the heart of our work. The stories in this annual report each highlight someone who turned to JCFS Chicago to be better connected: to support and spirituality through Chaplaincy services, to meaningful employment supported by the Duman Opportunity Center,

to inner strength through work with Response for Teens, or to family and community through counseling to address anxiety.

But the JCFS Chicago story does not begin and end with the pandemic. We celebrated many other historic milestones.

This year we celebrated 100 years of North Shore Auxiliary.

We said goodbye to CEO Howard Sitron, whose decade of service will leave a lasting legacy. And we looked to the future with the launch of the Seigle Campus, marking growth and revitalization of our home in Skokie, serving as a launching pad for much-needed services throughout the wider community.

And through it all, our challenges and successes, we’ve stood in partnership with our staff, board, funders, stakeholders, and clients. Many thanks to each of you who made the stories of those in this annual report — as well as the many thousands not shared here – possible.

JOURNEY JCFS Chicago's chaplains speak with people at all stages of life and in different situations. During this time of COVID-19, they often address feelings of loss, loneliness, frustration, anger, sadness and the ambivalence of mixed emotions. Our chaplains actively listen, provide solace, and empower clients by bringing a sense of spirituality and connection to the Jewish community. While our chaplains would ordinarily meet with clients in person, they now offer telechaplaincy services such as praying together over the phone and offering support groups through Zoom.

This is often difficult with no physical cues or body language to draw from.

Chaplains across the country are all facing the same challenges but agree that the goal remains the same - to provide unwavering spiritual guidance and support to anyone who needs it during difficult times.

For example, Andrew came to JCFS in search of spiritual counseling. He was raised Roman Catholic, but at age 56, Andrew learned that he was born Jewish. This incredible revelation sparked Andrew’s spiritual journey, but also brought questions – “How do I incorporate my past into my newfound Jewish identity?”, “What does it mean to be Jewish?”, “Will I be good at being a Jew?” “I needed to find clarity and figure out how being Jewish was going to reshape my life,” said Andrew.

He contacted JCFS Chicago and connected with Rabbi Joseph S. Ozarowski, JCFS Rabbinic Counselor and Chaplain and manager of the JCFS Jewish Chaplaincy program. Andrew found immediate comfort in Rabbi Joe’s presence and sought his pastoral counseling. Over the years, Rabbi Joe has not only guided Andrew through the intricacies of Judaism, but also helped him navigate the Jewish community, from finding a place to worship at Anshe Sholom B'nai Israel and learning Hebrew, to connecting with other Jews in Chicago. Rabbi Joe also helped Andrew through a family conflict and connected him with supplemental JCFS services. Over the last six months, Rabbi Joe has continued to meet with Andrew via telechaplaincy and in person, while following social distancing and mask guidelines.

“I am so blessed to have Rabbi Joe in my life. There have been some challenging times, especially during the pandemic, but the unconditional support I have received has made such a difference to me,” says Andrew. “No one can help like JCFS.” Rabbi Joe adds, “It has been rewarding be able to provide spiritual support to Andrew. I am grateful he turned to JCFS, and that I could be the friendly hand that stretched out to him during his time of need.”

OPPORTUNITY Last August, Zach moved to Chicago from Washington, D.C. He came to the city without a job but had an interest in business and law. Zach previously worked at his grandfather’s law firm on the east coast and was confident his past experience would land him a new job, but he needed help connecting with the right employers.

His uncle suggested that he reach out to JCFS Chicago’s Duman Opportunity Center. Duman helps people with disabilities find and maintain meaningful employment through high-quality, customized services and streamlined supports, such as job readiness training, placement assistance, retention strategies, and job coaching.

“Including people with disabilities in the work force can help improve morale and workplace culture, increase employee retention and productivity, leading to a stronger bottom line,” says Nanette Cohen, Director of the Duman Opportunity Center.

Zach was partnered with an employment specialist at Duman, and together they worked on updating his resume and practiced mock interviews. After several informational interviews, Zach was able to improve his presentation

skills and continue to build his resume. Following weeks of interviewing, one employer was so impressed with Zach that he was hired on the spot.

Zach was happily working five days a week as an administrative assistant at Schoenberg Finkel Newman and Rosenberg, until the law firm was stifled by COVID-19 and he was let go. However, as the situation improved and some of the firm’s employees came back to work, Zach was re-hired in his position and tasked with new responsibilities.

He’s in charge of office mail and coordinating FedEx services, along with setting up Zoom conference calls.

“I used my time off during COVID to strengthen my job skills and show my employer that I was 100% committed to my job,” says Zach. “I am so lucky to have a job and I couldn’t have done it without the support of the Duman Opportunity Center.”

Zach hopes to work in Human Resources someday. “My experience has been so beneficial that I want to help others with their jobs,” he adds.

TRUST

Some of the most difficult years of a young person’s life happen in high school and often into college. At Response for Teens, the goal is to empower youth to make healthy life choices through prevention, outreach, counseling, and leadership in a teen-friendly environment.

started in March, the retreat was a few days away and staff had to make the difficult decision to cancel. Of the many workshops Emily and her friends participated in over the course of the year, especially important was one focused on learning to be resilient.

Emily became involved with Operation Snowball, while attending Rochelle Zell Jewish High School in Deerfield. With the support of Response for Teens staff, teen leaders get a chance to develop their leadership and peer education skills, while sharing life experiences with like-minded young people in the year long program.

Emily’s experience with Operation Snowball and some of the important topics that were discussed led her to start weekly counseling with Cat Kliegle, a clinician at Response for Teens.

“The transition to adulthood can be tough, especially during this time. Our goal is to provide a safe space for clients to process all these changes while helping them develop healthy skills to manage their stress.”

As part of a group of 10 other high schoolers, Emily accepted the role as team leader and bonded quickly with her fellow Snowball members. Various activities offered a great chance for everyone to get to know each other, building a real sense of trust amongst the teens.

Typically a shy person, Emily was uncomfortable presenting herself to others until she became part of the leadership program. Determined to learn how to be herself she knew that Snowball would help. “I learned some valuable skills that helped me to talk about things I’m passionate about and the weekly sessions offered a respite from the busy school week,” says Emily.

Each year Operation Snowball culminates in a long weekend retreat, but this year was different. Just as the pandemic 8

During the remainder of her senior year and through the college acceptance period it was critical for her well-being to continue therapy. Managing work, school and her academic future was stressful. The cancellation of Snowball was hard, causing some additional strain that she was able to immediately work out with Cat’s help.

As she goes off to college, Emily and Cat only meet once a month – a reflection of the progress she has made as she starts her next chapter at DePaul University in Chicago.

Emily’s experience at Response for Teens was something she did not know she needed until she got started, but she emphatically says, “Being around like-minded people was amazing and I’m grateful for the life-changing experience.”

GROWTH NEW SEIGLE CAMPUS IN 2021 The development of the Seigle Campus in Skokie has begun on the site of the renovated Goldie Bachman Luftig building and the soon to be developed Seigle Building next door. With a lead gift, philanthropist and JUF board member Harry J. Seigle launches the vision of a multi-service hub for counseling, career services, immigration and citizenship and other community supports.

A safe, welcoming space, the Seigle Building will become the new home for Response for Teens, featuring a teen-friendly, lounge-like lobby, modern space for counseling and community education as well as flexible programming rooms.

CONNECTION In many situations, counseling can help individuals overcome mental and emotional roadblocks so they can reduce stress and anxiety, avoid emotional triggers, form healthy relationships, and take other positive steps. When the pandemic started JCFS Chicago quickly moved many services to be virtual and telehealth was the best option for counseling patients to continue making progress towards their emotional well-being.

“The ability to connect and interact with their clinician is so critical during this time of such great isolation and aloneness.

Telehealth allows us the opportunity to continue to provide counseling services to the community,” stated Ruth Fruehauf, Director of Community Counseling.

Diagnosed with anxiety and depression, Betty* had been working with a clinician at JCFS for several years. Some of her issues affect her family dynamic, making her feel isolated. Add the restrictions of the pandemic and she felt even more alone.

Looking to stay connected and active, Betty used to find a reason to go out each day for coffee with friends, a walk around her neighborhood or a visit with family. However, even as the restrictions eased, she has not been able to get past her concern to be around her friends and the fear of going outside prevented her from sticking to her routine. For those isolated during the pandemic, telehealth may be the only option available for to make a connection with others. *Names changed for confidentiality 12

The limits of not offering telehealth in the past made it hard for some people to continue with counseling when dealing with health concerns, scheduling conflicts or family issues. In the past Betty needed to stick with the same appointment date and time, leaving no room for flexibility. With telehealth as an option, Betty’s visits have been done over the phone (with at least one successful video call) and rather than missing a session she has been willing to adapt to continue with counseling despite the absence of in-person sessions.

Adam*, a high school student five years into therapy would typically leave school for his appointment, but it was disruptive to his day. With telehealth, he can still get therapy and stay at school which contributes greatly to his overall success. As a single parent, David* needed to be at home with his kids, especially while they are using remote learning for school, but he has been able to use telehealth to get treatment when it fit into his household schedule.

“Anxiety is often the number one mental health issue. It is beautiful to watch people rise to the occasion in this scary time. Flexibility is showing great emotional growth,” says Devorah Greenfield, JCFS clinician.

JCFS Chicago counseling services help people like Betty, Adam and David develop positive strategies to strengthen connections within their families and communities.

A SNAPSHOT OF OUR IMPACT IN THE COMMUNITY. 66 Duman Opportunity Center clients received over 900 hours of job coaching.

Partnering with synagogues, over 100 volunteers were trained to help with the pandemic response in the community.

Throughout the stay at home order 27 committed JCFS staff continued to provide care and support to 88% of the adults in our residential group homes for people with disabilities.

Overall, 125 individuals received 616 chaplain visits in FY20.

In response to the community need due COVID-19, JCFS distributed $547,488.96 in financial assistance to 432 people.

Last year JCFS Chicago impacted 26,496 individuals across the Chicago area through programs, services and referrals.

Nearly 23,000 hours of counseling services were provided to over 900 clients in FY20.

To prevent a disruption in service during the pandemic, 6,500 hours were through telehealth.

Since 1919, the NSA has supported JCFS Chicago’s family of services.

NSA’s dedicated volunteers take pride in funding programs that enable individuals, children and families to grow, develop and thrive throughout their lives. These programs include incentive lunches and a graduation celebration at the Knapp School, respite services, and mental health services at Highland Park High School.
