A MESSAGE FROM OUR CEO & CHAIRMAN For 160 years, JCFS Chicago has served as a crucial resource in the Jewish community and well beyond. JCFS is a tightly woven fabric of services working to strengthen lives across our region by delivering on our commitment to be clinically expert and relentlessly caring, empowering people to improve their lives. Whether guiding someone through a life challenge, supporting individuals with disabilities, connecting people to education and support or helping a job seeker find meaningful work, we help redefine what’s possible.

In February, we launched our new name – JCFS Chicago – short and to the point. With JVS and HIAS on board, this enables us to express the depth and breadth of what we do in new ways, offering an opportunity to represent our array of services that go well beyond what Jewish Child & Family Services described. Our logo combines a Star of David and the Chicago star – creating an intersection of the Jewish values that inspire our work with our commitment to those in need across the Chicago area.

To further this, we have implemented a redesigned management structure that better reflects our intended impact, focusing us to be more client-centered in our service delivery. This positions us for impact, growth and sustainability through enhanced synergies across agency programs and services.

With the goal of enhancing our student’s experience in school, the JCFS Therapeutic Day School and Yeshiva is now the Knapp School and Yeshiva. The process of selecting the name involved thoughtful conversations around the impact of the school, those who have made our work possible, and how our kids experience their education with us.

The Knapp family has long been deeply committed to the JCFS community. Their dedication, partnership and commitment to our school ensures we have the tools to provide a warm and therapeutic setting for our students, along with the opportunity to enhance their school pride. With 141 students actively enrolled during the 2018-19 school year, Knapp School and Yeshiva achieved its highest enrollment in school history!

Our work with adults with intellectual/developmental disabilities continues to thrive. In March, our fourth integrated community living home opened in Skokie with four residents.

We are committed to helping each of our residents gain independence and increase self-sufficiency, and in supporting choices that improve their quality of life. The newly established Duman Opportunity Center will focus on developing tools for those individuals looking to enter the workforce and contributing to their communities in meaningful ways.

As JCFS looks forward, we are compelled to continue building on these strengths, continuing our mission to provide help, healing and caring services that are responsive, inclusive and accessible to all.

A partnership is defined as a collaborative relationship between two people or, in this case, two organizations – JCFS Chicago and Anshe Emet Synagogue in the Lakeview neighborhood of Chicago, one of nine congregations in the Chicagoland area that participate in JCFS Chicago’s synagogue community partnership initiative.

Serving the Jewish community where they live, learn, work and worship, the initiative enables JCFS to work closely with rabbis, clergy, congregational

professionals and lay leaders to provide easily accessible and intensive support through our family of services. Specially trained JCFS liaisons serve as point person for the partner congregation, providing consultation and connection to mental health and social service resources and bringing in educational and supportive programming. Last year, 1,448 congregants and community members were connected to needed resources, participated in programming and/or attended support groups in the partner synagogues.

“Through this initiative,” says Ann Luban, JCFS’s Senior Director of Community Services, “we work closely with the clergy and staff to develop the programming and support they need for their congregants.

It’s not a one-size-fits-all approach because each congregation is different, and some of the challenges congregants struggle with are incredibly complex.”

When people are experiencing challenges with issues such as domestic violence, substance abuse, mental health, grief, illness and infertility, they often turn to their clergy for guidance and support.

“Our partnership with JCFS means that

I know I have someone to turn to, to provide support and guidance for me and to connect my congregants to critical resources,” says Rabbi D’ror Chankin-Gould of Anshe Emet. Providing coaching and guidance on crisis intervention, volunteer training and information about the array of services available brings critical care to the community. The most profound impact happens when Ann and Rabbi Chankin-Gould can come together to hear someone’s story, brainstorm next steps and then offer much-needed resources immediately.

In one example, a single mother of two daughters felt alone and overwhelmed.

Ann and Rabbi Chankin-Gould, as the synagogue's liaison, met with the mother together to listen, assess her needs and develop a strategy to support her and her daughters. Enlisting the help of synagogue volunteers to pick the younger daughter up from school made it possible for the mother to receive ongoing support from a JCFS clinician housed at the synagogue and provided additional support to the daughter who developed wonderful relationships with the volunteers. Response for Teens addressed some of the mental health needs of the

older daughter. And the mother was able to receive financial assistance to pay some outstanding bills, which had been weighing heavily on her mind.

“Pairing the clinical expertise and resources of JCFS with the pastoral and communal support in the synagogue allows us to care for people in ways we previously could not,” concludes Rabbi Chankin-Gould, “and is transformative for the community.”

Stephie just finished her senior year of high school, and like a lot of girls her age she loves visiting her local Starbucks, listening to music and going for nature walks, but communication is challenging for her.

Weighing just two pounds at birth, Stephie was diagnosed with autism at an early age. She was introduced to JCFS Chicago ten years ago when her mom, Patti, was looking for respite services for Stephie and her younger sibling. She called seven

agencies looking for one experienced in communicating with non-verbal children, and of those seven, only JCFS called her back. “That was the biggest thing for me,” Patti recalled. “No one else responded, and I heard back from JCFS within 24 hours.” Patti initially spoke with Marlies Gramann, Associate Vice President of Services for People with Disabilities, who connected her family with Roberta

Pieta, coordinator of JCFS’s group respite services. Stephie and her sibling attended Sunday respite, where they participated in social and recreational activities while Patti enjoyed a well-deserved break.

From there, Marlies arranged for Stephie to begin speech-language therapy through Integrated Pediatric Therapies to work on her communication skills.

Stephie's current speech-language therapist Allison Liwanag, whom she was been working with for five years, is helping her develop the tools to participate in conversation. Patti explained that Stephie

can follow what people are saying but can’t make it all out. “It’s like you’re in a crowded room and people are speaking French.

You might know some words, but you can’t fully understand the conversation.”

After trying several communication strategies and feeling like she wasn't making progress to help Stephie find her voice, Allison began researching communication devices. “One day I clumsily tripped and dropped a bunch of things. Stephie, a nonfunctional verbal communicator, turned to me and said, 'Are you ok?' At that point,

I knew that we had to keep going—there’s so much more untapped potential.”

Allison discovered the Tobii Dynavox, special technology on an iPad with different pathways that are accessible and customized for Stephie’s needs. She has a “mom” button with Patti’s picture, one for a special sweatshirt she likes to wear, and even a pathway for her favorite Starbucks order, an iced chai latte. The technology has given her the independence to make herself be heard. “All the workers know her here,” Patti says with a smile, while Stephie takes a sip of the Starbucks

drink she was able to order herself.

For Patti, the value of multiple services through JCFS is that the clinicians anticipate and understand Stephie and her family’s needs. “You never know when your needs are going to change.” When Stephie’s dad died suddenly, it was a passing that was hard to explain to her, but the therapists she worked with knew exactly what the family needed during this difficult time.

“We were connected to social workers and family counseling at JCFS. They helped us heal and explain things to Stephie in 9

the way she needed to hear it. I couldn’t imagine having to look for those services on my own while coping with our loss.”

Our community living model emphasizes the importance of building and sustaining a safe, supportive, and stable home environment with organic community inclusion, choice making, and self-determination.

Four years ago, Jeff Suskin decided he was ready to live on his own and

was looking for an independent living arrangement. With the help of his parents, Jeff found a good fit at an integrated living home in Wilmette through JCFS Chicago’s residential supports.

“I am more confident and independent,” says Jeff–and he is always busy. He likes

to help clean the house, shovel snow, rake leaves, grill and host parties with his housemates, who regularly invite Jeff’s best friend and twin brother, Hart, to join. Jeff bonded with his housemates through his love of collecting classic model cars, nature, wildlife, and even convinced everyone in the house to go fishing at a nearby pond – his favorite place in the neighborhood. Jeff is good at navigating public transportation on his own, and the bus drivers all know Jeff along his frequented routes to local car shows, medical appointments and his job.

Jeff commutes five days a week to work in the janitorial department at a

government building in Des Plaines. Wellsuited for the job, Jeff has taken on new responsibilities over the last eight months, such as operating a forklift and helping train new hires. Through JCFS Chicago’s family of services, Leticia Cardoso, Assistant Director of JCFS’s Residential

Supports, was able to connect Jeff and his family with JVS career and employment specialists. After developing a customized employment plan that integrated his skills, abilities and interests, JVS staff worked to help Jeff secure his current job, and they continue to help him with job coaching.

Although he has made great strides, Jeff continues to work on his organizational and communication skills with guidance from Joey Lenti, a licensed clinical social worker at JCFS. “Jeff and I have been meeting weekly for about 2-1/2 years. Our therapy has targeted self-care, self-awareness, and self-advocacy; social relationships, emotional regulation and communication

skills, and independent living and coping skills. Jeff is endearing, persistent, and motivated. I am inspired to reflect on and

recognize the admirable progress he has made over time, both in our therapy work and in his daily living, at home, at work, in his family, and at play. I feel privileged to be one small piece of Jeff’s coordinated family of JCFS services,” says Joey.

Jeff’s dedicated individual supports provider, Adam Roe, is also an important person in his life. Adam

helps to facilitate Jeff’s shopping trips, medical appointments, social activities,

transportation, cooking for the house and more. “Since coming to JCFS, Jeff is a different person. He has really opened up, and has become a better communicator, more flexible and accountable. He values the friendships he has made and is a good housemate,” says Adam.

Adam continues, “I really have to credit Leticia for her work. Her attention to detail

training for our staff and works so hard to help our residents improve their lives.”

Jeff’s parents, Howard Suskin and Lydia Stux, have also been supportive of his transition to independence and appreciate that everything he needs to succeed is in one place. “One of the benefits of JCFS is that its wide array of services enables staff to coordinate effectively and responsively in providing Jeff with a full range of

Born in 1950 to a single-mother dealing with mental health issues, Jerry Sampson came into foster care at the age of 6 months and was placed in the home of Doris and Erving Siegel, with whom he remained until he was 18.

Despite separation from his birth mother at an early age, Jerry’s life was relatively stable growing up, in large part to Doris and Erving, who always did their best to provide him with the resources and

opportunities he needed. Though he saw his birth mother about once a month, Jerry always thought of the Siegels as mom and dad. In the mid-1960s, Doris was awarded “Foster Mother of the Year” by the JCB for her care and effort.

Perhaps the most significant people in Jerry’s childhood were the social workers at the JCB. Meeting with them once a week for over a dozen years, Jerry has many fond memories of those visits. Whether they were taking him out to dinner, enrolling him in summer camp, buying him a guitar,

or setting him up in his own apartment when he turned 18, the social workers were always there to ensure Jerry’s health and safety. Growing up, Jerry feels the JCB social workers were his “guardian angels”.

About 10 years ago, Jerry became increasingly curious about the early years of his life, so he contacted an employee at JCFS Chicago (formerly JCB) and asked to see his records. Not only did he find medical reports, psychological examinations, and professional assessments, but he also found artwork

he had done with social workers and other examples of the exceptional support and creative development he was given. Reading through his records reminded Jerry of many things he might have taken for granted, gave him a new perspective on life, and reinforced how connected and caring the agency was throughout his time in foster care.

Today, Jerry lives in Vancouver with his wife and son. Now in his late 60s, he feels like it’s time for him to give back.

Though being in Canada means he can’t Jerry and his birth mom.

volunteer his time, Jerry is nonetheless committed to supporting the agency.

Recently, he made a very generous contribution to JCFS Chicago’s annual campaign to ensure that children currently in foster care continue to receive the same support and care that he did. As Jerry considers the future and his estate plans, he remembers everything the JCB did for him and knows that he would not be where he is today without them.

Founded in 1919, the North Shore Auxiliary (NSA) is celebrating 100 years of supporting JCFS Chicago’s family of services. Over the last 35 years, the NSA has donated more than 7 million dollars to JCFS. Funds raised through their annual dinner dance and key card shopping events are used to support the Knapp School & Yeshiva, respite and counseling services, and the Highland Park Connections program.

Safety Parents

The NSA is also very generous with their time, volunteering at the Knapp School for many events throughout the school year, such as organizing a pizza luncheon reward program for the high school, breakfast before the annual talent show, and a luncheon for graduates and their families. We are grateful for the many years this dedicated group of women has supported JCFS.
