The Foundation’s Cutting Edge Grants Award Over $1.2 Million to Seven New Programs
T
he Foundation’s 2013 Cutting Edge Grants totaling $1,230,000 were recently awarded to seven new programs serving the Los Angeles Jewish community. This year, The Foundation’s Cutting Edge Grants focus on highly innovative programs that foster engagement in the community among diverse constituents, including special-needs adults, music industry executives and artists, and the LGBT population. Grantmaking is at the heart of what we do. Together with our family of donors, The Foundation is pleased to provide seed funding to creative thinkers, social entrepreneurs and innovative organizations in Jewish Los Angeles to develop and implement transformative, high impact programs. This year’s Cutting Edge Grants recipients include: Bnei Akiva of Los Angeles for Moshava Malibu; Builders of Jewish Education for Sifriyat Pijama Community B’Los Angeles; Creative Community For Peace; GrapeVine for the GrapeVineLA web-based network; The Jewish Federation for the Los Angeles Jewish Abilities Center; The Jewish Federation for NuRoots Community Fellows; and Jewish Outreach Institute for the LGBT Interfaith Parents Circle. We look forward to watching these programs grow in the community. Read more on pp. 2 and 3 and at www.jewishfoundationla.org. Continued on page 2

FROM THE DESK OF
Marvin I. Schotland PRESIDENT & CEO, JEWISH COMMUNITY FOUNDATION
Why We’re Bullish on the Future The recent Pew Research Center’s survey on American Jews (www.pewforum.org) has generated much reaction. Some people worry that it portends less Jewish identity and community affiliation in the future, while others see hopeful signs in the survey’s findings. One thing the study definitely reveals: There are enormous complexities in accurately assessing Jewish identity and affiliation, and equal challenges in appropriately addressing issues raised by such a survey. Although we face significant challenges of affiliation and identity here in Los Angeles—one of the most vibrant, energetic and creative Jewish communities in the world—we view these issues quite optimistically. As a matter of fact, many of the programs funded by The Foundation, The Jewish Federation and other major organizations are specifically designed to enhance Jewish affiliation and identity. To that end, in this issue of Legacy, you’ll read about seven initiatives with the potential to profoundly enhance Jewish identity and affiliation. You’ll also read the Robin family’s story—inspired by the Goren family’s legacy gift earlier this year—about creating Donor Advised Funds for each of their seven grandchildren to strengthen their connections to community. Additionally, you’ll read about a recent Foundation event featuring 18 dynamic, young individuals who are creating innovative programs supported by Cutting Edge Grants—like Om Shalom Yoga, Neshama Center & Mikvah, and Tzedek America—to engage peers in meaningful Jewish expression. These stories bode quite well for Jewish L.A.’s future. Continued on back page
