For generations of Schulmans, philanthropy has truly been a family affair. Over two decades ago, Mark and Esther Schulman established their family foundation at the Jewish Community Foundation of Los Angeles, with the goal of involving future generations of their family in giving. Their son Richard and his wife Marcia continued that legacy by opening a Donor Advised Fund with The Foundation, and through Richard’s involvement serving on The Foundation’s Board of Trustees, Advisory Board and various committees.

Over the course of their more than 50 years of marriage, Richard and Marcia have given back to the community and instilled those values of giving in the next generation of their family. Their three children have been involved, along with the three children of Richard’s sister, Roberta (Schulman) Holland.

Several generations of the Schulman family are actively involved in philanthropic pursuits.

The Foundation’s Center for Designed Philanthropy has provided invaluable guidance along the way, through facilitating family foundation annual meetings and researching funding opportunities. “We appreciate The Foundation’s help administering our family’s philanthropic endeavors through the decades,” says Richard. “We couldn’t do it without them.”

Following in the philanthropic footsteps of the older generation and in the spirit of the Schulman Foundation’s focus on the young and the elderly, three of Mark’s and Esther’s great-grandchildren developed a proposal to provide deserving children with scholarships to Wilshire Boulevard Temple’s Camp Hess Kramer.

After the proposal was presented and approved, staff from the Center for Designed Philanthropy served as liaison with camp administration to establish an endowment in the family’s name.

As the family’s younger generations assume leadership roles in charitable giving, Richard sees them widening their concerns to support the community at large. “Life isn’t as insular as it was when our parents were growing up in the 1920s. Today, with more blended families and a more open society, it’s all about community and that community is larger than ever before.”

He says, “The Center has helped to focus our family’s philanthropy in new ways,” and concludes, “I’m sure my parents would be very proud of their family’s lasting dedication and commitment to their legacy.”

Working with the Center for Designed Philanthropy, the Schulmans created an endowment providing scholarships to Camp Hess Kramer for deserving children.
