Here’s another reason to remember cosmetics legend Max Factor.

Over 70 years, the Max Factor Family Foundation has grown from six descendents of makeup mogul Max Factor, Sr. into dozens of family members giving back to Southern California’s Jewish community and the community at large. The increasing complexity of this private family foundation led its trustees to reach out to the Jewish Community Foundation of Los Angeles for collaboration and administrative support.

“The Jewish Community Foundation has helped us run things more efficiently and look at new goals, opportunities and directions,” says Max Factor III, grandson of the founder and a trustee of the Factor Family Foundation.

The Jewish Community Foundation oversees the Factor Family Foundation’s grant activities from establishing giving guidelines and grantmaking procedures to soliciting and evaluating funding requests and monitoring the fulfillment of each grant.

“The Foundation makes our lives easier and encourages us to build bridges with other communities.

Thanks to its guidance, we fulfill our philanthropic goals with a greater sense of competency and satisfaction,” says Factor.

PUENTE Learning Center — one of many nonprofits supported by the Factor Family Foundation — provides educational-enrichment resources to children and adults to help them succeed in life.

Donors discover way to simplify philanthropy.

Nearly 10 years ago, when respected money manager Bill Feiler sold his investment company, he began searching for an alternative to establishing a private foundation to manage his charitable passions. He ended up discovering The Foundation.

“When we set up our donor-advised fund at The Foundation, we learned philanthropy would be so much easier than tackling the creation of our own private foundation,” admitted Bill.

Bill and his wife, Cece, saw their fund as a way to avoid the administrative work of a private foundation while being able to make donations to causes they care about, such as cancer research aimed at controlling the disease.

Recently, Bill joined The Foundation’s Board of Trustees as well as its Investment Committee to share his financial acumen to strengthen The Foundation’s portfolio: “I’ve been happy to use my expertise to help The Foundation provide resources to the community for generations to come. Donors should feel confident their assets are being looked after professionally.”

Cancer research is one of the primary causes that Cece and Bill Feiler support.

After selling his investment business, Bill Feiler—along with his wife, Cece— decided to create a donor-advised fund at The Foundation rather than establish a private family foundation. The charitable work of a comedy writer keeps people smiling.

Mickey Ross never forgot about the welfare of others. So prior to his death last year at 89, the successful producer, director, and writer set in motion an endowment fund with The Foundation.

Ross, who worked on All in the Family, The Jeffersons and Three’s Company, was introduced to The Foundation by his attorney, Alan Watenmaker, and business manager, Mads Bjerre. After getting to know the organization, Ross decided to bequeath half of his residuary estate — more than $10 million — to The Foundation and trusted its board to carry on his philanthropy for generations.

“The breadth of resources available to Mickey at The Foundation, along with the opportunities for preserving his charitable interests, were so significant, he ultimately concluded that creating an endowment at The Foundation was the best way to go,” said Watenmaker.

The Michael and Irene Ross Endowment Fund at The Foundation will support programs that provide food, shelter, medical care, and education to those in need.

SOVA Food Pantry, dedicated to alleviating hunger and poverty, is a cause Mickey Ross supported during his lifetime.
