Michael currently serves as Chairman and CEO of Arrakis Therapeutics, CEO and Director of Obsidian Therapeutics, and sits on the Scientific Advisory Board of FutuRx, a biotech accelerator in Israel. Associate Professor of Political Science, Tufts University

Eitan Hersh, Associate Professor of Political Science at Tufts University, earned his Ph.D. from Harvard University and served on the faculty at Yale University. His research is focused on civic engagement and the relationship between laws, strategies, and the behavior of American voters. Eitan is the author of Hacking the Electorate: How Campaigns Perceive Voters and his work has appeared in Nate Silver’s FiveThirthyEight, The Boston Globe, and The New York Times. He will lead a conversation about the dangers of ordinary citizens participating in politics as a hobby and explore alternative forms of political engagement that are more effective and ultimately more rewarding.

ROBERT S. KAPLAN, PH.D. Marvin Bower Professor of Leadership Development, Emeritus, Harvard Business School

Robert S. Kaplan, Ph.D., along with management consultant, David Norton, created the Balanced Scorecard 25 years ago; it is a system that enables an organization to measure and communicate its strategic objectives. Their book, The Balanced Scorecard: Translating Strategy into Action, has sold more than one million copies in 26 languages and revolutionized the way private, public, and nonprofit organizations describe and implement their strategies. Robert continues to lecture across the globe about how this model has evolved over time to become one of the world’s most widely used management tools. His newest article, in January 2018 Harvard Business Review, describes how companies can use the scorecard for strategies that deliver both financial profits and poverty alleviation.

Senior Advisor at the Security Studies Program, MIT

We know that Russia interfered in the 2016 presidential election, but what did Putin hope to gain from this? What does it mean for U.S.-Russian relations going forward? Professor Saivetz will explore these important questions and more. A senior advisor at the Security Studies Program at MIT and a research associate at Harvard’s Davis Center for Russian and Eurasian Studies, she lectures on political science and co-chairs MIT’s “Focus on Russia” seminar series.

Professor Saivetz is the author of numerous books and articles on Soviet and Russian foreign policy, with a particular focus on the Middle East, Russian energy policy, and Moscow’s policies toward other Soviet successor states. She has also consulted for the U.S. government.

The Gefilteria is a new kind of food venture with the mission of reimagining Eastern European Jewish cuisine by adapting classic dishes to the tastes of a new generation. Co-Founder Liz Alpern believes that Old World Jewish foods can be beautiful and delicious, and wants to inspire others to rediscover this incredible cuisine.

Together with Jeffrey Yoskowitz, Liz co-authored the narrative cookbook, The Gefilte Manifesto: New Recipes for Old World Jewish Foods and now travels the globe as a cook, educator, and entrepreneur. She was named to The Forward’s list of 50 influentials and was featured in Forbes’ 30 Under 30 list for food and wine. Come for a tasty conversation and a hands-on pickling workshop with Liz. OSHRI AZRAN

Founder of Brothers for Life Experience and Senior Vice President of Business Development at Freudenheim Partners

Raised in a small town in northern Israel, Oshri served as commander in the Israel Defense Forces paratroopers brigade. During Operation Defensive Shield he was severely injured, and after intensive medical rehabilitation, Oshri returned voluntarily to his unit and finished military service with his team. He went on to help develop and manage Brothers for Life, a non-profit to benefit injured Israeli soldiers. His travel program, Brothers for Life Experience, gives people an experience of Israel through the eyes of soldiers who sacrificed for Israel’s protection.

Oshri served for many years at the Israel Security Agency (Shin Bet) at the Israeli embassy in Vienna, Austria. He is now a real estate broker in Greater Boston with a focus on growing the Israeli market.

RUTHANNE FULLER Mayor of the City of Newton

Mayor Ruthanne Fuller’s mission is to make Newton more open, pluralistic, and diverse. She will discuss the shared missions of Newton and JCDS, and speak more broadly about how pluralism fits into what is “now and next” for the City of Newton. Before becoming the first woman to be elected mayor of Newton, Ruthanne represented Ward 7 on the Board of Aldermen, and was an at-large member of the City Council. A graduate of Brown University and Harvard Business School, she also worked as a management consultant and served as the first strategic planner for WGBH.

DANIEL SHAPIRO, PH.D. Founder of the Harvard International Negotiation Program

How should we deal with conflict in our own lives and in the world around us? Daniel Shapiro, Ph.D., is founder and director of the Harvard International Negotiation Program, associate professor in psychology at Harvard Medical School/McLean Hospital, and affiliate faculty at the Program on Negotiation at Harvard Law School. He is the author of Negotiating the Nonnegotiable, co-author of Beyond Reason: Using Emotions as You Negotiate, and chaired the World Economic Forum’s Global Agenda Council on Conflict Resolution.

In this lively session, he will share frameworks he developed to address the emotional dimensions of conflict and how they have been used in moving forward peace processes in the Middle East and elsewhere.

Why is Matthew Teitelbaum, Director of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, convinced that museums are more important than they have ever been? How can museums help bring communities together?

How will museums navigate politics, nationalism, and identity during increasingly complex times? Matthew, the 11th director in the museum’s 147-year history, will reveal his answers to these questions.

With his expertise in contemporary, European and Canadian art, he will also explore why it was important to bring the Lodz Ghetto Photographs of Henryk Ross to Boston, as well as his vision for the future of the world-renowned Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.

SARAH WINSHALL Independent Film Producer and Film Critic

Roll out the red carpet for Sarah Winshall, an independent film producer who has two projects at this year’s Sundance Film Festival: a short film, Men Don’t Whisper, and the feature-length supernatural comedy, Clara’s Ghost. Join her for a conversation about films and filmmaking as she discusses her journey from a JCDS alumna living in Weston to making movies in New York City and Los Angeles. Sarah will discuss the process of how to get a movie off the ground and provide an insider’s point of view of the independent film industry. She may even show some clips from Clara’s Ghost that feature a couple of prominent JCDS figures, but we won’t say which ones!
