Letter from the Board Chair

Dear Friends,

2024 was a truly unique and transformative year in the history of the J.

After years of dedicated leadership, Lynn Wittels retired, leaving behind a legacy of strength, vision, and community impact. During the transition, the Office of the CEO and our Executive Team stepped up with incredible professionalism and commitment, guiding the agency through an important period of reflection and forward momentum.

Our extensive search for a new President and CEO was both thoughtful and thorough. In the end, we were fortunate to find the right leader right here in our own backyard. In December 2024, Steven Rosenzweig (re)joined the J as our new President and CEO, bringing with him a deep understanding of our community, a passion for our mission, and a clear vision for the future.

While we’ve made meaningful progress this past year, we know there is still important work ahead. I am filled with optimism and confidence as we move forward under Steven’s leadership.

It is an honor to serve as Chairman of the Board at such a pivotal moment in the J’s history. I am grateful to my fellow board members, our dedicated staff, and to you— our community—for your unwavering support and belief in the J’s mission. Together, we are shaping the future of this extraordinary institution.

With gratitude,

Letter from the President & CEO

If you had asked me a year ago what significant changes might be coming in my professional journey, I never could have predicted what the year would bring. And yet, here I am—grateful, humbled, and energized to be back at the J.

Returning in December felt like a true homecoming. I’ve been incredibly fortunate to step into the role of President & CEO with the full support of our outstanding Board of Directors, a passionate and dedicated staff, and a community of thousands who proudly call the J their home.

2024 was not without its challenges. Transitions always come with complexity, and I committed early on to focus on two key areas: people and process. Much has changed since I last worked at the J, but so much of what makes this place special remains the same—a vibrant, diverse community where people come together and feel empowered to be their authentic selves.

The pages of this report tell a story of success and optimism but also of opportunity. We take a moment to celebrate the past—but we are hyper focused on creating an even more powerful future for the J and all who walk through our doors.

Thank you for being part of this journey, and for all you do to support the J and its mission.

Sincerely,

The J 2024 By the Numbers

• Over 2,500 bottles were served to infants in 2024

• 121 children provided individual support services (14% increase)

• $143,044 scholarships awarded (29% increase)

The J Early Childhood Centers are honored to play a role in fostering a lifelong love of learning in young children. In 2024, we celebrated several exciting milestones. We proudly opened our Kikar Ha’Ir in our SFC center, creating a vibrant and welcoming space for connection and community. Renovations began at our Chesterfield location, reflecting our ongoing commitment to providing inspiring environments for young learners. We also unveiled our beautifully renovated Family center at Fox, and completed the installation of an elevated garden with a scenic walking path on the SFC playground, further enriching the outdoor learning experience for our children.

Early Childhood Center

Camp Sabra

In 2024:

• 670 campers

• 95% of our families found Camp Sabra to have an excellent or great impact on their child’s Jewish identity.

• 82% of our families found Camp Sabra’s Jewish life (created ambiance / atmosphere where their child was proud to be Jewish) to be excellent (national avg. 77%)

• $83,463 awarded in scholarships

In the summer of 2024, we continued to be able to play and have fun without the noise of the outside world. Our river trips were hugely successful as our campers floated down new rivers and added excitement to their trips with added hiking and caving. We brought in special guests for the campers like a magician for a funny all-camp Saturday evening program, and a podcaster who helped create some memorable moments with the campers and staff! We welcomed some Israeli staff from the J and they helped us put together a fun Israel Night which included pita making, a shuk, dancing and more.

Day Camp

In 2024:

• 95% of parents rated the overall experience as “excellent” or “very good”

• 2846 camper weeks

• Over 50 seasonal staff, including counselors, specialists, and leadership roles

• Over 80% staff retention rate from 2024

The 2024 J Day Camp season delivered a vibrant, safe, and enriching experience for children and families across the region. With an emphasis on community connection, personal growth, and Jewish values, our camps served over 2846 camper weeks between our Staenberg Family Complex (SFC) and Marilyn Fox Building locations. The season saw continued growth in participation, and a strengthened commitment to inclusion, creativity, and fun.

Adult Day at the J & Life Enrichment

In 2024:

• 600 hours of life skill building activities to support our participants to become more independent.

• 156 hours of speech therapy helping participants from all abilities.

• 220 hours of music therapy.

• 30 unique neurodiverse campers supported at J Summer Day Camps

• 100% Satisfaction with Communication, Friendliness and Concern from staff, Activities and programs offered, care planning and goal development, and Overall Quality of ADJ.

• More than 3500 hours of group support services for adults with I/DD through Theatre Unlimited and Sunday Friendship Group programming.

We are proud to offer exceptional programming for seniors with cognitive and physical challenges as well as young adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities through Adult Day at the J.

What a caregiver had to say about the program:

“We visited at least six adult daycare providers before we chose The J. There is no comparison. The J‘s program is superior to any other that we have seen. I wish that the managers at the other daycare services could come over and learn something from the J.”

Cultural Arts

In 2024:

• NJT received 19 nominations and 3 awards by the prestigious St. Louis Theatre Circle.

• The Jewish Film Festival changed locations, extended to 2 weeks and sold out 6 films while accommodating over 1,300 patron reservations.

• Over 2,500 people attended the 22 author program events hosted by the St. Louis Jewish Book Festival.

The J has a rich tradition of providing Jewish cultural opportunities as well as fine art productions and events to its members. This broad array of programming ensures that we are providing something for everyone and allows us to celebrate our members and community in the spirit of the Jewish tradition.

Coming off of their unprecedented 2023 success, New Jewish Theatre saw over an 11% growth in audience attendance, welcoming over 5,600 patrons to their 5-show season. Ending the 2024 season was the musical First Date , which had 1,311 patrons attend, eclipsing the almost 1,200 patrons who saw the previous season closer, Into The Woods . NJT continues to exemplify what all the Cultural Arts at the J provide: relevant in-person experiences that build community, enhance belonging, and engage the heart and mind.

Jewish Life and Nishmah

In 2024:

• 5000+ pounds of produce grown in Community Garden of Eden donated to Harvey Kornblum Jewish Food Pantry

• Our family center offered 17 events for Jewish families with 456 unique families in attendance. 50% of the families attended three or more programs and over 70% attended more than one program.

• In September 2024, we hosted two Shabbat retreats at Camp Sabra

• The 3rd annual young professional retreat welcomed 50+ participants (21-40 yr old)

• The Nishmah Women’s Retreat moved to Camp Sabra and included 100+ women

• 45 Teens participated in the JCC Maccabi games

• 450+ attendees from across the US joined for our largest ever in-person Songleader Boot Camp national conference

• Over 250 people attended our first ever Hanukkah pop-up in the city at Ballpark village, in addition to four other community-wide Hanukkah events.

Everyone is welcome at the J! Our history, rich in Jewish tradition, is the foundation of the work we do. Today’s Jewish community seeks relevant Jewish education and activities. Our innovative programming is designed to ensure a vibrant and thriving Jewish community for generations to come.

The Hamsa Wellness Community proudly served 459 individuals in their cancer journey through cancer education, awareness, health and support activities. Our Strength Over Cancer program continues to be filled to capacity each session.

Our Community’s Town Square

In 2024:

• More than 2,500 people were in attendance at Sababa: Jewish Arts and Culture Festival held here at the IE Millstone Campus. This bi-annual event brings the entire community together to celebrate.

• We were proud to host over 1,500 community members to commemorate and mark the one-year anniversary of October 7th.

• 450+ attendees celebrated the 76th anniversary of Israel at the Chesterfield Amphitheatre with Israeli singer Yuval Halaf.

J Associates

In 2024:

• 366 members

• $249,573 raised at Battle of the J Stars to support the J’s programs

Our amazing women’s auxiliary, J Associates, makes a tremendous impact on the work we do at the J. Through their financial support, advocacy, and activities, they help to ensure the success of our programs. They are the only women’s auxiliary that we know of at a Jewish Community Center and we couldn’t be more grateful for them!

Funding from the J Associates helped to support Adult Day at the J, Youth Sports, J Day Camps, Early Childhood Education, Camp Sabra, Nishmah, Cultural Arts, and more. These departments then used the funds for scholarships and programs. Impacting ages from infants to the elderly, the J Associates are truly the lifeblood of the work we do throughout the agency.

Fitness and Wellness

In 2024:

• 7,540 classes provided for our members

• 14,528 unique members utilized our fitness and aquatics centers

• 1870 trainings were conducted for young adults with disabilities through our Life Enrichment program

Fitness and wellness are key to a fulfilling, healthy life. The J’s fitness experience brings our community together while providing exceptional service. We continue to expand our offerings to meet the needs and preferences of our members. We added a series of Senior Friendly group exercise classes for our more mature fitness enthusiasts. It is wonderful to see so many in our community relying on the J for their fitness and wellness support!

Aquatics

In 2024:

• 2160 units of private/semi swim lessons

• 122 average monthly participants in group swim lessons

• 69 kids on our summer swim team

We love our private swim lessons at the J! Whether it’s for a young person that needs one on one lessons or an adult that is learning to put their face in the water for the first time, the J does it all. Giving them the attention that they need to be a lifelong swimmer is a trademark of the program at the J! And don’t forget about our group lessons – our swimmers start at 6 months old! We moved to a new summer swim team league for our summer session. We found it to be more organized, and meets were closer for our team!

Sports & Recreation

In 2024:

• 6,000 athletes and volunteer coaches participated in programs

• 200 unique sports and rec programs were offered

• Pickleball continues to grow due to extreme interest by our members.

The J’s Sports & Rec Department continues to serve as a cornerstone of engagement for all ages—fueling health, competition, connection, and community. In 2024, we expanded youth and adult offerings, improved program quality and accessibility, and strengthened pathways from youth programs to lifelong recreation. From first dribbles in Pre-K basketball to championship matches in adult leagues, our department provided meaningful experiences for our community.

Commitment to the Staff

In 2024:

We have incorporated more employee-friendly and progressive policies to become employee-centric and strengthen our position as an employer of choice.

The Executive Leadership Team launched a “Listening Tour” to better understand what matters most to our staff. As a result of these conversations, 36 action items were identified and implemented based on the feedback received.

Our staff are the heart of our mission and the driving force behind our impact on the community. Their talent, dedication, and passion for the J shine through in everything they do, ensuring our members have the best possible experience. We are deeply grateful for their unwavering commitment and hard work.

Staenberg Legacy Circle

The Staenberg Legacy Circle honors the generous individuals who have shared their intention to include the J in their estate plans. Your vision and commitment inspire us and help ensure a vibrant, sustainable future for generations to come. Named in honor of Michael Staenberg—a passionate advocate for the J and a firm believer in the power of philanthropy to inspire others—the Staenberg Legacy Circle reflects his enduring impact. Michael’s visionary leadership and unwavering support continue to serve as a powerful catalyst for building and strengthening our community. We are deeply grateful for his generosity and example. We are especially honored that Michael has personally pledged to include the J in his own estate plans, further demonstrating his deep commitment to our mission and future.
