As I look back on my first six months at the J, I am truly grateful to be part of this incredible community. It has been a pleasure getting to know and reconnecting with so many of our members, working alongside our dedicated staff, and immersing myself in the outstanding programs that bring the J’s mission to life. I am proud of the meaningful impact we create together—engaging our community and enriching Jewish life. There is no place in St. Louis with “Jewish” in the name that brings both Jews and Non-Jews together to play, learn and connect.
This season is filled with exciting milestones, including the launch of the JCA Charitable Foundation’s Adult Day at the J (ADJ) at the Marilyn Fox Building in Chesterfield. This world-class program meets a critical need in our community, and I am honored to be part of expanding the J’s reach and impact. Summer at the J is truly special! Our outdoor aquatics centers are among the best in the area, and our campuses are alive with energy as young people from across the St. Louis area make lifelong memories at our J Day Camps. It is also the perfect time to try something new—whether it’s a class, program, or activity. Be sure to check out this program guide—you just might discover your next favorite way to engage with the J!
Looking forward to seeing you around the J this summer!

The Heidi Chronicles by Wendy Wasserstein
Recommended 12 years+
Both significant and celebrated, Wasserstein’s Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award-winning play follows the coming of age of Heidi Holland, a successful feminist art historian, as she tries to find her bearings in a rapidly changing world. We follow Heidi and her friends, male and female, gay and straight, as they mature from the 1960’s to the 1980’s while searching for political, professional and personal fulfillment. Funny, touching, and written with rare grace and sensitivity, the play is a moving examination of the progress of a generation—a time during which the status of American women underwent profound, and sometimes unsettling, change.

Two Jews Walk Into A War by Seth Rozin
Recommended 12 years+
Ishaq and Zeblyan are the last remaining Jews in Afghanistan. They share the only remaining synagogue that has not been destroyed by the Taliban. They share a mission to repopulate the Jewish community in Kabul. But they also hate each other. Can this Middle Eastern odd couple commit to one incredible act of faith to keep the diaspora alive without killing one another? A modern vaudeville full of schtick, sorrow, and survival.

The Wanderers by Anna Ziegler
Recommended 12 years+
Two marriages have seemingly little in common: Esther and Schmuli are Orthodox Jews navigating strictly defined rules and roles, while Sophie and Abe are secular and free to make their own choices. But both couples are growing apart as they strive to balance their individual identities with the families they’ve created. As Esther tests the boundaries of her personal freedom, Abe falls into a correspondence with a movie star that will shake the foundations of his marriage and career. Anna Ziegler’s funny, moving, and thoughtful play asks if following one’s truth is worth it, no matter the cost.

Get your deerstalker cap on—the play’s afoot! Comedic genius Ken Ludwig (Lend Me A Tenor; Dear Jack, Dear Louise) transforms Arthur Conan Doyle’s classic The Hound of the Baskervilles into a murderously funny adventure. The male heirs of the Baskerville line are being dispatched one by one. To find their ingenious killer, Holmes and Watson must brave the desolate moors before a family curse dooms its newest heir. The intrepid investigators must escape a dizzying web of clues, silly accents, disguises, and deceit as five actors deftly portray more than forty characters. Does a wild hellhound prowl the moors of Devonshire? Can our heroes discover the killer in time? Join the fun and see how far from elementary the truth can be.

Through several diverse and inspirational programs, Nishmah brings together Jewish women from different denominations who may have otherwise never met. Together, these women learn from each other, connect, and form bonds through faith and friendship. Nishmah creates the foundation for these Jewish connections that form outside the walls of a synagogue environment.
New this year, Nishmah began a monthly book club to connect women through learning and intellectual stimulation around trending topics. We have looked at the diversity of the Jewish community, the history of White Nationalism and how it fits into tropes of antisemitism. We also do experiential learning. Our Facebook group is an active place to share articles, news and upcoming events in areas of interest for Jewish women in St. Louis.
Nishmah also engages women in study and connection, through our Ilene Joseph Salon Series, facilitated discussions about stimulating articles on topics of interest. We partner with many Jewish organizations and synagogues to bring women together across denominations and we create a unique multigenerational space. Nishmah partners with internal programs at the J to attend New Jewish Theater shows, Israeli cooking classes and so much more!
Join Nishmah and NJT for a panel, dinner and a show. Our panel is an intergenerational look at career and motherhood throughout the decades. The show following is NJT’s production of The Heidi Chronicles.
