J Associates Lip Sync Live
J Associates’ Lip Sync Live, on March 7, 2020, was the J’s last in-person event of the year. Nearly 450 people packed The Pageant to watch community friends and volunteers in costumed and choreographed performances, and the show raised almost $200,000!
Laurie Berwald and Marcy Mamroth co-chaired the event in partnership with Debbie Lefton, President of J Associates, and Jill Starr, J Associates Vice President of Development. Ben Nordstrom, longtime friend of the J, directed and emcee’d the event. The Sidney and Bobbi Guller Family Foundation was presenting sponsor.
The J Associates, our women’s auxiliary, supports the St. Louis Jewish Community Center by promoting public awareness and fundraising through activities that foster camaraderie, develop leadership, and inspire Jewish values.
Since 1985, the J Associates have continuously supported the J by raising funds for scholarships, programs, equipment and supplies.
The J’la
The plan was to host the 2020 J’la at the J. Little did we know when we chose the theme There’s no place like home! that people would have to attend from home.
Once it was determined that the event would be virtual, the committee, chaired by Bette and Ron Abeles and Jennifer and Craig Rosenthal, worked with J staff, engaging Seinfeld’s Jason Alexander to entertain the audience with music and comedy. Longtime community and J volunteer, Alice Ludmer was honored.
Instead of tickets, 370 device links were sold, with an estimated 700-800 in “attendance.”
Donors were able to contribute to their favorite department at the J, and we were thrilled to raise $340,000 in support of scholarships and J programs. The pandemic placed us in a position of greater need than ever before – a need that went above and beyond our typical need for scholarship dollars. We asked our community to come together to support the J so the J could continue to support the community, and it did!
