Jewish Community Center of Metropolitan Detroit
S
ince our establishment in 1926, the JCC has played a central role in the physical, social, spiritual and educational well-being of the Jewish and general community of Metropolitan Detroit. Located in West Bloomfield, our facility offers year-round programming for families, children, teens and adults. The JCC includes a fitness center, three swimming pools, a summer day camp, a child development center, an inline hockey center, an interactive children’s museum and an art gallery – to name a few! We continue to expand and diversify our programs, but our goals have remained the same since our founding: to provide the finest programming, events and services, and to guarantee that our JCC is place of Jewish values where everyone is welcome regardless of age, race, religion, national origin, special needs or financial status.

Exploring Talents JCC Day Camps allow kids the chance to do what they love, working with professional staff from every field who help them develop existing talents and learn new skills. Independence

Friendship The closeness children share as they play and learn together helps them develop compassion, make friendships that last a lifetime and learn to work with many different kinds of people. Activity With swimming and hikes in the woods, sports and games, camp means being active, which is vital for mental, physical and spiritual well-being.
Camp is a safe and structured environment where children learn to think for themselves and make good choices. Jewish Values While each JCC day camps has its own culture and program, we share a commitment to bringing to life the values of the JCC movement. Chesed (compassion), kehillah (community), tikkun olam (repairing the world), ruach (spirit) and hachnassat orchim (welcoming guests) are woven into the fabric of our camp communities.
Confidence At camp there’s no competition (except the friendly kind), no homework, tests, or pressure to get good grades, allowing kids to develop confidence and become empowered to face new challenges and situations.

SUMMER PROGRAMS CHILDREN AND FAMILIES CALENDAR - JUNE Special Needs jccdet.org/specialneeds
Megan Coultas: mcoultas@jccdet.org or 248.432.5457 All of the JCC’s summer programs for children with special needs are built around the concept of an Individualized Camper Care Plan (ICCP), which addresses each camper’s specific social, behavioral and communication abilities and goals. The plan also includes all relevant dietary and health information.
Inclusion Programs: •K ids All Together (KAT): Gives children (ages 2 ½ -14) with special needs the opportunity to participate in typical activities at summer camp. With support from a 1:1 inclusion counselor, every child has the chance to swim, enjoy arts and crafts, and play sports alongside typically developing peers. •C amp Connect (formerly SNAP Pioneers): For children in grades K-4, this it offers a 3:1 camper-to-counselor ratio (if needed, a 1:1 counselor is available). This program helps campers connect with their typically developing peers and their peers with disabilities, and it offers activities that may uncover hidden skills, new interests and friendships.
Self-Contained Programs • Special Needs Adventure Program (SNAP): For children who do not require 1:1 support and wish to participate in regular summer camp. SNAP includes typical camp fun with off-campus adventures. It is divided into Explorers (grades 5-8) and Voyagers (grades 9-12). Throughout the week, both groups go on field trips to destinations like the zoo, DIA, Zap Zone and local parks, as well as participate in volunteer projects to learn the importance of charity, community and team building. • Teens All Together (TAT): Comprises two separate age groups, 15-17 and 18-26, and offers older campers the chance to enjoy summer activities and learn life skills. Two days a week are spent working in various positions throughout the JCC, with trained staff serving as job coaches; two days are for exploring the community and enjoying camp fun; and one day is for developing “soft skills” such as budgeting, nutrition, and personal safety.

Year-Round Programs • Preschool Inclusion: The Pitt CDC provides a set number of openings for children with special needs who would benefit from being accompanied by a dedicated inclusion assistant so that they may participate in our preschool program. • Thursday Night Social Group: Provides adults (18+) with special needs the opportunity to meet with peers, socialize with one another, and, above all, the opportunity to be respected and valued. • Young Adult Social Group: Social and recreational program for young adults (ages 15-26) with special needs.
