Jewish Community Center of Metropolitan Detroit
S
ince its establishment in 1926, the JCC has played a central role in the physical, social, spiritual and educational well-being of the Jewish and general community of Metropolitan Detroit. Located in West Bloomfield, our facility offers year-round programming for families, children, teens and adults. The JCC includes a fitness center, three swimming pools, a summer day camp, a child development center, an inline hockey center, an interactive children’s museum and an art gallery – to name a few! We continue to expand and diversify our programs, but our goals have remained the same since our founding: to provide the finest programming, events and services, and to guarantee that our JCC is a place of Jewish values where everyone is welcome regardless of age, gender, race, ethnicity, national origin, ability or financial status.

ACADEMIES FOR EDUCATION AND ENGAGEMENT The Academies for Education and Engagement offer a dynamic way to learn a sport you’ve always wanted to try, develop an existing talent like acting, or bring a bit of adventure to your life with something completely unexpected! These specialized classes and workshops are taught by professionals who are passionate about their fields. Academies give participants a chance to make friends who share their interests, be mentored by caring and knowledgeable staff, and, most important, have fun in an exciting and nurturing environment. The Academies for Education and Engagement offer the perfect opportunity for anyone eager to learn and ready to be challenged. The Academies will run in five annual sessions: Fall, Winter I, Winter II, Spring and Summer.

Our friendly and professional staff will help ages 5-12 learn the basics of skating! In this seven-week class, students learn how to move forward, backward, turning and stopping. Pat Hazell performs “The Wonder Bread Years”

“Pollack” (film)

Sphinx Virtuosi
The Sphinx Virtuosi, led by the Catalyst Quartet, is one of the nation’s most dynamic professional chamber orchestras. Koresh Dance: Classic Koresh – 25th Anniversary
Koresh Dance Company presents a selection of favorites from the company’s impressive repertoire, including interpretations of compositions by Bach, Beethoven and Ravel. Moments of tenderness and grace alternate with humor and brash force in an evening that features highlights from more than 60 works by Artistic Director Ronen Koresh. You saw them on “America’s Got Talent.” Now the amazing crew of ArcAttack bring their high-tech wizardry to generate a truly “electrifying” performance at The Berman! Part rock concert, part science experiment, an ArcAttack event unveils the science behind the spectacle. The concert features the group’s signature Tesla Coils (yes! singing coils) accompanied by a drum-playing robot. Connections: The Artistry of Bits and Pieces
Sunday, August 28-Thursday, September 29 Opening Reception: 1-4 p.m. Sunday, August 28 Please join us for a talk by the artists at 11 a.m. Sunday, September 11 Soon after Nanci LaBret Einstein and Jay Knapp met, they discovered they shared an interest in the connections imbued in the world of making art. LaBret Einstein's work stems from her attraction to the emotional-intellectual connection between the audience and her sculptures, which twist everyday objects into something more. Knapp's work twists objects as well, but far more literally as he spins ordinary items into string, creating large fiber works that probe the struggles that have entwined the lives of artists.

This exhibit features work showcasing multiple techniques taught at the Schoolcraft Metals program. Curated by Melissa Machnee, who also developed the Schoolcraft Metals program, along with student Stanley Meretsky. This exhibit will showcase paintings, drawings and prominent works from throughout the artist’s career.

This exciting collection will feature works by 35 established abstract artists who live in Detroit or have roots in the city. The exhibit will be curated by Rick Vian and includes pieces by Brenda Goodman, Ray Katz and Charles McGee.

Hebrew Poetry and the Bible
Bagels, deli and gefilte fish are only a few of the Jewish foods to have crossed into American culture. ”Rhapsody in Schmaltz” traces the history of the cuisine that Yiddish-speaking immigrants brought to the U.S. and how these foods impact modern culture, from Diane Keaton's pastrami sandwich in “Annie Hall” to Larry David's Passover seder on “Curb Your Enthusiasm.” Columnist, bon vivant and raconteur, Michael Wex is the author of “Born to Kvetch,” which sold more copies than any other book about Yiddish. His Yiddish-to-English translations range from Sholem Aleichem’s stories to material for war crimes trials, while his English-to-Yiddish projects include the only such translation of “The Threepenny Opera” authorized by the authors’ estates, and songs by Holly Near, Irving Berlin and Bob Dylan. With a guest appearance by the author ”A Perfect Life” tells the story of Jane Weiss, who is obsessed with finding the genetic marker for Valentine's Disease, a neurodegenerative disorder that killed her mother - and which she and her freewheeling sister may have inherited. Eileen Pollack holds a B.S. in physics from Yale and an MFA in fiction from the Iowa Writers’ Workshop. She is the author of two story collections, three novels and two books of nonfiction. Thirty-two-year old Russian native Peter Dranga is a producer, musician and singer who has been performing since he was 4 years old. He studied at the Gnessin Academy of Music and went on to win the Moscow Open Competition of Accordionists, the International Competition of Accordionists and the Russian New Names International Music Competition. In “Perspective,” Dranga integrates the accordion with modern culture, creating a completely new sound that moves from Tango to ethnic rhythms to funk. $30 ($25 for JCC members)
