Seats are reserved first-come, first-served at the time of purchase, and will not be held for any other reason. Seats for all “General Admission” events are available first-come first-served, once the theatre doors open.

Refund Policy: All sales are final. Ticket transfers are allowed up until the purchased show time. Transfers can be made to a different seat, event, and/or individual.

Cancellation Policy: JCC Mizel Arts and Culture staff do everything they can to ensure that events will happen as planned. However, an event can still be cancelled due to weather, facility maintenance concerns, artist travel conflicts, and many other reasons. Should an occurrence arise that would cancel an event, the JCC Mizel Arts and Culture staff will do what they can to reschedule the event and/or pivot to a virtual event. If this is not possible, the event will be cancelled outright. Should the event be rescheduled or cancelled, staff will contact all patrons via email, in which case, exchanges and refunds will be processed on a case-by-case basis, depending on the outcome of the event.

FALL EVENTS The Neustadt JAAMM Festival was endowed

by Kathy Neustadt in 2014. A long-time JCC Denver Board member, Chairperson of the JCC Denver Board and current member of the JCC Mizel Arts and Culture Center Board of Directors, Kathy wanted to continue the legacy of literature and culture that her family has cultivated with two very prestigious international literature prizes.

The Neustadt International Prize for Literature is a biennial award for literature and is considered one of the most prestigious international literary prizes. This award is often compared with the Nobel Prize in

Literature, and referred to as the “American Nobel” because of its record of 30 laureates, candidates, or jurors who, in 42 years, have been awarded Nobel Prizes following their involvement with the Neustadt Prize.

Like the Nobel, it is awarded not for any one work, but for an entire body of work.

Since 2003, the NSK Neustadt Prize for Children’s Literature has been awarded every other year to a living writer or author- illustrator with significant achievement in children’s or young-adult literature.

STATE OF PLAY: Renowned journalist and news anchor Dan Abrams shares his insights on the American political landscape in the runup to the 2024 general election amidst unprecedented turmoil, particularly against the backdrop of a former president’s mounting legal troubles. Abrams will take a deep dive into the circumstances surrounding the presidential campaigns, the Supreme Court, and will field questions from the audience in this not-to-be-missed evening of conversation and controversy.

The range from superpowers China and Russia to emerging threats like pandemics, cybersecurity, climate change, and drones. The

The Holocaust Awareness Institute at the University of Denver’s Center for Judaic Studies welcomes acclaimed author and educator Alexandra Zapruder to present the 21st annual Fred & Audrey Friedman Marcus Holocaust Lecture. Zapruder’s 2002 book Salvaged Pages: Young Writers’ Diaries of the Holocaust is one of the most widely taught resources in Holocaust education for middle- and

Heart and Soul Exhibition ReelAbilities: Denver is thrilled to partner with Access Gallery to present Heart and Soul, an exhibition featuring works created through the Artistic Realization Technologies (A.R.T.) program.

Founded over 25 years ago by visual artist Tim Lefens, A.R.T. empowers artists who have limited or no use of their hands to fully direct the artmaking process from start to finish. A person called a tracker is assigned to each artist to transfer their creative thoughts to the canvas. Facilitated painting using A.R.T. empowers artists to transcend physical limitations and share their creativity. Heart and Soul is free to view and will be on display in the Mizel Reception Room throughout the festival.

With a long career promoting street art, music, and film as well as pioneering online marketing through social media, Marc Schiller was well regarded as a communications expert. But in 2015, he suffered a stroke on both sides of his brain, leaving him with a language impairment known as aphasia and with some cognitive deficits. From day one in the intensive care unit, his family (and then Marc himself) has been documenting his arduous recovery. A DISABILITY REVOLUTION Multiple Disabilities Featured 108 min, 2020, Directed by Nicole Newmhan and James Lebrecht United States, English FREE A groundbreaking summer camp for teens with disabilities proves so inspiring that a group of its alumni join the radical disability rights movement to advocate for historic legislative changes.

Crip Camp is the story of one group of people and captures one moment in time.

In the early 1970s, teenagers with disabilities faced a future shaped by isolation, discrimination and institutionalization. Camp Jened, a ramshackle camp “for the handicapped” (a term no longer used) in the Catskills, exploded those confines.

Jened was their freewheeling Utopia, a place with summertime sports, smoking and makeout sessions awaiting everyone, and campers experienced liberation and full inclusion as human beings. Their bonds endured as many migrated West to Berkeley, California — a hotbed of activism where friends from Camp Jened realized that disruption, civil disobedience, and political participation could change the future for millions.

HAL & MINTER Parkinson’s Disease 24 min, 2020, Directed by Ram Devineni United States, English Hal Sirowitz has Parkinson’s disease. At one time one of the most popular poets in the United States, he was a regular on MTV and one of the original performers at the Nuyorican Poets’ Cafe. Hal and

his partner, the writer Minter Krotzer, have become advocates for people with Parkinson’s disease and their families. A funny and uplifting story about being a creative couple and finding your voice.

I’M SO FAR Multiple Disabilities, Physical Disability 3 min, 2019, Directed by Leo Grandperret France, French Sometimes, things that seem simple… just aren’t. The trials of a senior with limited mobility trying to leave his home with the help of some friends.

NICK LIGHTNING Autism, ADHD 26 min, 2022, Directed by Pat Taggart United States, English The story of Nick Fergus, aka Nick Lightning, is a heartwarming tale about a Philadelphia man who was born with a disability that doctors could not define until he was diagnosed with Autism at age 44. Music was always front and center to Nick so he decided to become a rock star and created his

alter ego as Nick Lightning at age 15. While never possessing true musical talent and unable to learn such, he performs with passion, energy, and enthusiasm. Nick’s fun personality and constant expression of gratitude make him one of the most special people you’ll ever meet.

TOMÁS AND THE LIBRARY LADY Tomás, the son of migrant farm workers, meets a librarian who introduces him to the wonderful world of books. The stories enrich the lives of Tomás’ family and instill a love of reading. This is the inspiring true story of Tomás Rivera, who grew up in a migrant worker family, befriended a librarian in Iowa, and learned to love books and the places they took him. Tomás went on to a successful career in academia and became the chancellor of the University of California, Riverside. Adapted from the well-loved book written by Pat Mora, this play can be readily understood by both English and Spanish speakers.

Wiesenthal, a one man play by Tom Dugan. On the day of his retirement the famed “Nazi Hunter” Simon Wiesenthal welcomes one final group of students to his Jewish Documentation Center in Vienna, Austria. With warmth, wit and surprising humor this charming man, known as “The Conscience of the Holocaust,” recounts the remarkable story of how, after cheating death at the hands of Hitler’s dreaded S.S., he dedicated his life to tracking down and bringing to justice the greatest mass murderers in human history. While packing up his files on this April afternoon in 2003, Wiesenthal (affectionately called “The Jewish James Bond”) recounts, like a gripping spy thriller, how he solved his most sensational cases. Unmasking such notorious villains as Franz Stangl, the Treblinka death camp commandant, Franz Murer, “The Butcher of Wilna,” and the infamous “Architect of the Holocaust,” Adolph Eichmann. At days end it’s time for this 20th-century hero to finally leave the war behind and go home to his wife Cyla, but not before warning his young friends that, although progress has been made since the dark days of Nazi Germany, the human savage still lurks just below this wafer-thin veil of civilization.

Have your friends and family constantly been telling you how funny you are? Or that your particular brand of comedy is destined for greatness...or the opposite? Well, here’s your chance to prove everyone wrong (or right)! This class will lead participants through guided comedy writing lessons, led by Mizel Arts and Culture Center General Manager Rich Cowden, and culminate in each wannabe comic performing a “tight five” minute standup set at the Elaine Wolf Theatre in front of those same friends and family members.

The class uses the most influential how-to book in all of standup as a text— “The Comedy Bible” by comedy legend Judy Carter. In 2024, Judy herself will be the headliner for the Tight Five performance and students will get the chance to be her opening acts! Proceeds from the Tight Five performances continue to be donated to the Robert E. Loup Scholarship Fund, which provides financial assistance to allow traditionally underserved students to attend the Wolf Theatre Academy program.

Perfect for readers of A Woman of No Importance, Three Ordinary Girls, and Eleanor: A Life comes the first-ever biography of Anna Marie Rosenberg, the Hungarian Jewish immigrant who became FDR’s closest advisor during World War II and, according to Life, “the most important official woman in the world” —a woman of many firsts, whose story,

forgotten for too long, is extraordinary, inspiring, and uniquely American. Her life ran parallel to the front lines of history yet her influence on 20th century America, from the New Deal to the Cold War and beyond, has never before been told.

As Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s special envoy to Europe in World War II she went where the president couldn’t go. She was among the first Allied women to enter a liberated concentration camp, and stood in the Eagle’s Nest, Hitler’s mountain retreat, days after its capture. She guided the direction of the G.I. Bill of Rights and the Manhattan Project.

Though Anna Rosenberg emerged from modest immigrant beginnings, equipped with only a high school education, she was the real power behind national policies critical to America winning the war and prospering afterward. Astonishingly, her story remains largely forgotten.

Judy Carter is a comedy icon and doesn’t like to brag but she did write the Bible! No joke – The New Comedy Bible, the top selling book on the how-to of comedy. Judy has coached some the top comics working today, including Seth Rogen, Hannah Gatsby, and Maz Jobrani.

Judy’s career started as a magician where she sawed men in half until an airline lost her luggage. Having to go on, she quickly discovered standup comedy and traveling with carryon. As a headlining comic for 17 years, Judy toured with Prince and performed on over 100 TV shows as well as 4 HBO/Showtime comedy specials.

Judy joins us at the MACC to show us, and our Tight Five students, how it’s done!

A frenzy of misbehavior and misjudgment currently threatens the American polity. Donald Trump is the center of the storm. His words, deeds and basic instincts are fundamentally at odds with America’s

long-held essential ideals. But Trump isn’t the only problem. Many of his friends, and plenty of his foes, also consistently violate important norms and traditions while seeking short-term political victories. This bipartisan race to the bottom is a stress test of the world’s preeminent constitutional democracy. It continues today.

This collection of columns, previously published in newspapers around the world, looks at two things through the lens of the law: The presidency of Donald J. Trump and the response to the presidency of Donald J. Trump.

What’s a better way to kick off Summer than with a backyard concert? Join us for music from local band Avourneen, snacks, patio games, and more!

Avourneen (pronounced a-VORE-neen), a Denver-based trio that specializes in Irish folk, but doesn’t have direct geographic ties to Ireland. The band is composed of guitarist/vocalist Adam Goldstein, a Denver native; violinist CL Morden, an import from California; and Kenny Martinez, a longtime Colorado resident and talented bassist.

Together, they play a brand of Celtic music that’s both timeless and innovative, a take on the genre the Celtic Connection calls “unique in Colorado – and perhaps in the country.”

The three members of Avourneen boast long résumés playing Irish, Scottish and Breton music. Before forming in 2014, Adam and CL were playing age-old tunes from Ireland professionally, while Kenny had built a vast repertoire of pop, jazz and folk music playing in a diverse set of bands. Goldstein (who claims the of moniker “Denver’s Favorite Irish Jew”) has long been a fixture at Denver’s Clocktower Cabaret and other local venues, where he plays Irish folk songs for the club’s popular burlesque and variety shows. Morden, a classically trained violinist who earned a bachelor’s from the prestigious Lamont School of Music at the University of Denver, has experience as a member of the Denver Philharmonic Orchestra and other orchestral ensembles.

Martinez, meanwhile, is a veteran of area rock, pop, and jazz bands.

June 3 - 14 Marlin, an anxious and over-protective clownfish, lives in the Great Barrier Reef with his kid Nemo, who longs to explore the world beyond their anemone home. But when Nemo is captured and taken to Sydney, Marlin faces his fears and sets off on an epic adventure across the ocean. With the help of lovable characters such as optimistic Dory, laid-back sea turtle Crush, and the supportive Tank Gang, Marlin and Nemo both overcome challenges on their journey to find each other and themselves.

JAMES AND THE GIANT PEACH (Play)

June 17 - 28 A magical peach! An imprisoned boy! Insect friends! An incredible journey! This amazing adventure of James Henry Trotter will fulfill the fantasy of anyone who has ever dreamed of escape. Roald Dahl’s story comes hilariously to life in this delightful dramatization that reveals the wickedness of some, the goodness of others, and the indecision encountered by many when they are faced with crises. You will see James (as he cleverly gets the Peach out of danger), the wise Old-Green-Grasshopper and the pessimistic Earthworm. You will also see James’ mean Aunt Spiker and cruel Aunt Sponge come to a suitably sticky end. The action is tied together by the Narrator, a storyteller, motivator, emcee, and audience friend.
