BMH-BJ’s Senior Chavurah Welcomes Everyone February 17, Senior Chavurah will host an event with Dr. Michael Greher, a clinical neuropsychologist and licensed psychologist, who will discuss memory problems and what is normal. Other upcoming synagogue programs of interest to seniors include: Shabbat Shira, Saturday, January 30; the Purim Carnival, Sunday, February 28; and the BMH-BJ annual event honoring Ardie Wandel, Sunday, March 14. The BMH-BJ Senior Chavurah is generously supported by the BMH-BJ Women’s League and welcomes new program ideas. Somalia’s history is a story of Colonialism yielding to authoritarianism dissolving into anarchy. Chaos has reigned since the early 1990’s with rampant wars between rival clans, with no functional government in charge. Join Active Minds® as we examine Somalia's troubled path and where it may be leading. This program is co sponsored by JFS At Home. January 12 – Dr. Rudy Jacobsen. Retired dentist, Rudy Jacobsen, was a child aboard the “Voyage of the Damned”, when the SS St Louis sailed from Hitler’s Germany in 1939 carrying over 900 Jewish refugees. Denied landing visas in Cuba, the USA and Canada, the ship was forced to return to Europe where two thirds of the passengers perished. He speaks to groups throughout the state about his experiences as a child living through those harrowing days. January 19 – Ada Geller, author of My Lot
My Lot is a collection of 50 poems, each of which was written by Ada, both in English and in Hebrew, with an emphasis on a “mirror image” approach not only to content and meaning,but also to rhythm,structure and visual appearance. This approach is reflected also by the book’s layout, cover design,and title (English –“My Lot”; Hebrew – Lot Chayayi) January 26 – Abbey Lemesany. Abbey is a docent at the museum of Nature and Science and spent two years in the Peace Corps in the Ukraine. She will discuss her experiences there with a PowerPoint picture presentation of her life. Through March 2 Toby Meyer Solo Exhibit The Mizel Museum Artist Alliance and the Rafael Spiritual Healing Center of Jewish Family Service is proud to present the artwork of Toby Meyer on exhibit through March 2. The solo exhibit title, “Interpretations,” originates from Meyer’s approach for bringing together abstraction and realism in her paintings through the context of double interpretation. Meyer’s use of vibrant colors and strong design weaves through the exciting shapes and forms in subtle rhythm.

Jewish Family Services Wednesdays, beginning January 20 Rafael Spiritual Healing Center to Offer Bereavement Support Group Rafael Spiritual Healing Center of Jewish Family Service will offer an 8-week Spiritual Healing Bereavement Support Group. The group, which will meet weekly over an eight-week period, will provide spiritual and psychological support for those who have experienced the loss of a loved one. It will offer a unique Jewish perspective to the grieving process and is co-facilitated by Rabbi Eliot Baskin, D. Min., Jewish Community Chaplain, and Arleen Gershen, LCSW, a JFS psychotherapist. If you think you may be ready for the bar or bat mitzvah you never had, Temple Micah is looking for adults who know their Alef-Bet and want the experience of making profound connections with their tradition, with other like-minded people and with forgotten or undiscovered parts of themselves. The Anshei Mitzvah (People of the Commandments) program starting in January will entail study sessions spanning about 1-1/2 years and culminating in a special Shabbat observance on April 30,2011.

4th Saturday each month, January 23–April Bubbye & Zayde Shabbat Camp (Runs concurrent with Shabbat Service & Tisch) Micah grandparents and “wannabes” share Jewish heritage and fun cultural adventures with children ages 5-10 through arts and crafts, cooking projects, stories and musical activities. The morning mixture of events is designed to attract, engage and build rapport across generations in age-appropriate, satisfying Judaic endeavors! Shabbat Shirah Gather with Temple Micah congregants to celebrate the annual Sabbath of Song — featuring musical talents and skills of Micah minstrels at varied levels of ability. Musicians Hal Aqua and David Ross direct these lay instrumentalists and vocalists at several rehearsals in prep for the service, where other congregants and guests sometimes clap, tap or chime in too. Shabbat Shirah is part of a series of “Funky Friday” musical and spiritual explorations during Temple Micah Kabbalat Shabbat Services. Other upcoming musical themes include Jewish Voices, Human Sounds—Dylan, Cohen & Simon on March 5; Reggae, April 16; and Separdi, May 7. Join us for our first of four films, The Ritchie Boys on January 7, followed by a discussion with Linda Weiss, daughter of Jack Strauss, a former Ritchie Boy. The film is about the intelligence camp, Camp Richie and the role the graduates played in World War II. On February 4, come watch the Frisco Kid, a movie about a rabbi from Poland who goes to America to lead a Jewish community. When he arrives in America he is hijacked and meets up with a bank robber and they form a friendship.
