Welcome to Summer 2012!

We are deeply indebted to our marvelous parents and energetic students for our reputation as one of Colorado’s most trusted institutions for quality summer programming. With a vast array of choices from daily recreational camps to overnight residential camp to specialty and sports programs as well as our art and theatre academies, there is something for everyone at the JCC (Robert E. Loup Jewish Community Center) and MACC (Mizel Arts and Culture Center).

Serving the Colorado Front Range since 1922, our comprehensive multidisciplinary center is a nurturing, friendly, safe, creative and comfortable environment. All of our programs proudly embrace diversity, welcoming everyone regardless of race, religion or disability.

We continue to offer our Camp Shai, day camp program at two venues, the Denver Jewish Day School (DJDS) and at our South campus (former site of Ames Elementary School). In an effort to provide greater flexibility to families, we are also offering transportation from Stapleton to the JCC and roundtrip from the JCC to DJDS. This year, we are introducing an exciting change in our Camp Shai programming by offering distinct camp programs by age, allowing older campers to select their own weekly chuggim (activity) choices and younger campers the opportunity to move with their cabin to brand new chuggim. Campers will enjoy swim instruction and On The Road (OTR) campers will experience an overnight at the JCC Ranch Camp. All campers will participate in camp favorites like swimming, sports, and arts and crafts. Other program changes include a revamped lunch program offering smaller group supervision as well as increased specialty offerings for afternoon preschool students.

In addition, our stellar JCC Early Childhood Center (ECC) offers Camp Shalom, a high quality and enriching program for children two years to five years which introduces young children to the fun of summer camp through age appropriate activities that range from creative arts to outdoor games and swimming.

And for the more adventurous, our spectacular JCC Ranch Camp is located in Colorado’s beautiful Black Forest (just 90 minutes from Denver), with programs designed specifically for each age. JCC Ranch Camp offers one of the best equestrian programs to be found in a Jewish camp setting, a kosher kitchen, a heated outdoor swimming pool, a technical rock climbing wall, a low-elements ropes course, a high-elements challenge course and zip line, sports fields and basketball court, nature and crafts centers and miles and miles of beautiful trails on our 400 acres of Colorado ranch land.

And there is no better place for quality arts instruction than MACC! MACC’s summer art and theatre academies are committed to the highest standards of creative training for young people. Instructors are all active professionals in their fields, as well as nurturing mentors. In addition, MACC classes employ quality materials and processes and are conducted in professional studio and theatrical environments. Our Art Academy offers ceramics, painting, glass and mosaic, printmaking, filmmaking, collage, drawing and cartooning. The Wolf Theatre Academy continues to offer classes and workshops in creative dramatics, beginning dramatics, auditions as well as an emphasis on performance with 11 shows in our smaller Pluss Theatre and three extended-run mainstage productions in our spectacular newly renovated Elaine Wolf Theatre.

And although this fun is reserved for children, we care very much about the experience that parents have in our summer programs. We strive to communicate effectively and share with you the details of our full day programs such as Camp Shai and Ranch Camp. We appreciate parent involvement and feedback; please stop by or contact us with any thoughts about our programs that you may have.

Summer at the JCC and MACC is a special time, bursting with energy, exploration, expression, color and song. Like your children, we look forward to this season with eager anticipation and are gratified to watch children grow in our programs. A summary of camp programs by location is listed below. Details of each are in the body of this guide.

1. Denver Jewish Day School 2450 South Wabash Street, Denver, 80231 Camp Shai & Summer Blast Camps Entering Kindergarten—grade 10, five days per week, 9 a.m.—4 p.m.

June 11—Aug. 3 The JCC is excited to be returning to the Denver Jewish Day School (formerly Herzl/RMHA) for Camp Shai this summer. Denver JDS boasts incredible outdoor spaces – a baseball field, soccer field, playground and access to the nature space along the Cherry Creek Highline Canal bike path.

2. Ames Elementary 7300 South Clermont Drive, Littleton, 80122 Camp Shai South & MACC Academies Entering Kindergarten—grade 5, five days per week, 9 a.m.—4 p.m.

June 11—Aug. 3 Camp Shai in South Metro Denver will return to Ames Elementary School for summer 2012. Camp Shai South will incorporate the same programmatic aspects as Camp Shai North. In addition, we will be offering Wolf Theatre Academy Workshops for children entering PreK–grade 3 from providing one-week theatre classes including creative dramatics and set design. In addition, working in collaboration with creative and educational organizations, the JCC is pleased to offer week-long, half-day specialty camps throughout the summer. You can sign up for one specialty camp for a morning or afternoon, or combine various specialty camps for a full day of fun.

3. JCC Denver 350 South Dahlia Street, Denver, 80246 Weekly camping options available May 29—Aug. 24 for the following programs: Sports, Tennis and Swim Camps Ages 4—12, one-week sessions, morning, afternoon and all day.

Children can stay active all summer by participating in sports activities, such as tennis, swim lessons, Sea Stars Swim Team, Serve, Snack and Splash, baseball, basketball, Multi-Sports and more for every interest and skill level.

Camp Shalom at the Early Childhood Center Ages 2—5, half-day and full-day programs Camp Shalom introduces young children to the fun of summer camp through age-appropriate activities that range from creative arts to outdoor games. All programs are conducted on site at the JCC Early Childhood Center and children enjoy weekly special events, such as fieldtrips, swimming and Shabbat Sing. 4. MACC at the JCC Campus 350 South Dahlia Street, Denver, 80246 MACC art and culture programs take place at the JCC campus and lluminate the human experience through creative cultural programming in the performing and visual arts. Mix and match art and drama classes for a summer filled with fun, learning and creativity.

Art Academy for Grades 1—12 Entering grades 1—12, 11 weeks of full-day or half-day programs June—Aug. Our dynamic program includes everything from traditional art forms like drawing, painting and pottery to contemporary media classes in digital photography and filmmaking… and everything in between. New and different experiences are offered every week. Again this year, our teen art program will be housed on the MACC/JCC Campus.

Wolf Theatre Academy Entering PreK—grade 12, 12 weeks of theatre for grades PreK—grade 12 June—Aug. One of Denver’s most professional theatre experiences for young performers, offering classes in production, creative dramatics, beginning dramatics, audition skills and more. Unique to the Wolf Theatre Academy is our Mainstage series featuring Guys & Dolls, Hairspray and The Taming of the Shrew and providing students with the opportunity to perform in fully mounted productions in our new 420-seat, state-of-the art, fully renovated Elaine Wolf Theatre (formerly Shwayder).

5. Ranch Camp Located in Colorado’s beautiful Black Forest in Elbert County Entering grades 2—11 The JCC Ranch Camp provides an overnight camping experience that enables children to strengthen their Jewish identity, become more caring members of society and connect with the natural world through challenging, fun, growth-oriented activities. Located on almost 400 acres of ranch land in Colorado’s magnificent Black Forest, Ranch Camp pro-

for additional fees. Memberships must be renewed annually and are non-refundable and non-transferable.

If a class or session is full, you will be placed on a waiting list. Your place on the waiting list is determined by the date on which your registration form was received. Your deposit will be returned if no space opens up for the program.

To plan the best possible summer for your child, you’ll want to set aside some time to familiarize yourself with the contents of this Summer Fun Guide. Be sure to consult the EZ Find Grids by location on the rollout back cover. Our staff is eager to help you, so please contact us with your questions or concerns.

No child may be registered for overlapping classes or camps. However, students are encouraged to register for both a morning and an afternoon program. Children under the age of 12 must also register for Lunch-In if they are registered in both a morning and afternoon class.

Deposits and Fees

In order to make signing up as convenient as possible for parents, some important changes have been made to the registration process for JCC camps and MACC’s summer academies.

For your convenience, parents can write a single check made out to either the JCC or MACC for any combined programs of either entity.

Registration has opened for the JCC Ranch Camp, an overnight camp for grades 2–11, Camp Shai, the JCC’s summer day camp for children entering kindergarten through grade 10, Camp Shai South, the JCC’s summer day camp for children entering kindergarten through grade five in the South Denver Area all other camp registration will open Feb. 15. Consult this guide for information on camp programs and session dates, call our Camp Central office at (303) 316-6307 or visit www.jccdenver.org/camps and www.ranchcamp.org.

2. Click "Register Now". You will be directed to our Registration System.

3. Set up an account for the camper you are registering.

4. Select the programs you wish to register for.

You will receive a confirmation email once your registration has been approved, and then another email when your registration has been processed. Please revisit your camper account as this is also where you will find all applicable camper information forms.

Unless a program is cancelled by the JCC or MACC all deposits and fees are non-refundable and non-transferable. We cannot refund fees or give credit for absences or temporary withdrawals.

Applications from accounts with outstanding balances or from expired memberships cannot be processed. Regardless of the notation on your check, it is our policy to apply all payments to outstanding balances before applying credit to a camp balance.

Changes to registrations for JCC and MACC camp programs may be made at no additional charge through Monday, April 16, 2012.

Changes after April 16, 2012 will be charged a $15 administrative processing fee. All changes must be made two weeks prior to the start of a camp session or program. The JCC and MACC are unable to offer refunds for absences or withdrawal from a program.

Financial Assistance In addition to online registration, all camp forms will also be online.

Once your registration has been received and approved, your account will be populated with the corresponding camp forms. You will not need to recreate it or re-populate the information each time you register; your information will be carried over from year to year. Online registration is not available for Camp Shalom. For more information on Camp Shalom (ages 2–5) registration, please email preschool@jccdenver.org.

Membership and Registration

Financial assistance is available for many JCC and MACC summer programs. Families may apply for financial assistance by visiting www.factstuitionaid.com and completing an online application.

Paper copies are no longer accepted; however you may visit the JCC Camps Central office for assistance. To be considered for financial assistance, a $25 non-refundable processing fee and $200 tuition deposit is required, in addition to a completed online registration. The deadline for scholarship applications is Wednesday, April 16, 2012.

Families will be notified of their award in early May 2012. All inquiries and financial assistance applications remain confidential. In the event that financial assistance is not accepted or the amount is not sufficient, all camp deposits will be refunded or credited to your account.

A JCC annual membership will allow you to enroll in JCC and MACC classes at a discounted rate as well as keep you up to date on all JCC and MACC happenings. The membership fees are $60/year for individuals, $90/year for a mini-family (two people living at the same household address) and $100/year for families (three or more people). Senior membership is $30/year per individual and $60/year for couples. Memberships at the Tennis and JCC Sports & Fitness Centers are available

Children with Special Needs The JCC and MACC strive to enhance the lives of children and teens with special needs by providing opportunities to participate in JCC/MACC life to the fullest extent of their ability. Many of our programs welcome children with special needs. Please call the Camp Central office to obtain an application and to schedule an appointment with the program director to determine your child’s individual needs and to create a successful match between your child and our programs.

Lunch-In M—F (unless noted), Noon— 1 p.m.

JCC Philips Social Hall $30/week/JCC Member; $36/week/Guest; (does not include meals) In an effort to provide continuity of care for children in morning and afternoon camps, the JCC and MACC are offering a new format for lunch and supervision between Noon–1 p.m. Children who attend both a morning and an afternoon half-day program must register for “LunchIn” on the camp registration form. This program is open only to campers who attend both morning and afternoon half-day programs. Children who register for Lunch-In will be escorted from their morning camp to the Phillips Social Hall, where they will meet with a staff member from their afternoon camp group and go to a specific location to eat lunch.

They will then travel with their afternoon camp group to that camp’s location for the duration of the afternoon. Please indicate the date/weeks of your needed Lunch-In on your registration form. The fee for LunchIn covers staff supervision only—it does not include meals. All meals brought to the JCC campus must conform to kosher guidelines.

Children under the age of 12 who participate in an all-day program may not be left unsupervised on the JCC campus.

Camp Shalom and Camp Shai provide lunchtime supervision; children enrolled in these camps should not register for Lunch-In. For more information, call (303) 316-6367. Space in these programs is limited; registrations will be taken on a first-come, first-served basis.

Camp Shai North at Denver JDS Grades K–10 At Camp Shai, the JCC’s summer DAY CAMP for your child or teenager, every day is packed with ADVENTURES, FRIENDSHIP and FUN. Campers in grades K–2 will receive swim instruction and campers in grades 3–5 will enjoy activities at the JCC. Parents enjoy easy DROP-OFF and

PICK-UP and EXTENDED DAY PROGRAMS which are available for busy families. Each Friday, all

campers come together to celebrate SHABBAT and enjoy ALL-CAMP THEME DAYS like Purim in Summer, Maccabi Games and Israel Day. A Judaic curriculum, seamlessly woven together with our every day camp experiences focuses on our JEWISH VALUES. One week SUMMER BLAST camps include art, science and sports OPTIONS.

Sababa (Cool) On the Road

(Entering K—Grade 10) at Denver JDS

For children entering grades 5–8. On the Road campers go “On the Road.” Campers are empowered to challenge themselves as they embark on recreational, adventure and community-based field trips each day of the week including: hiking, swim trips and Apex, X-treme Challenge Sports Arena, rock climbing, swimming at the JCC and mountain biking.

Overnights include river rafting and horseback riding.

All grade levels refer to the grade the camper will enter in the fall of 2012.

This year, Camp Shai is pleased to present programs that are differentiated by age in order to offer campers unique and developmentally appropriate experiences as they grow and return each summer.

Chaverim (Friends) For children entering grades K–2. Chaverim is designed to give children an introduction to a diverse mix of recreational activities and traditions, including: sports, Jewish life, Israeli culture, instructional swim and water play, music, nature and specialized arts.

Tze’Adim (Footprints) For children entering grades 3–5. Campers will be given a choice of two different chuggim (electives) each week which may include such activities as: jewelry making, mosaic glass design, Dodgeball, nature, science, theater arts, GaGa or flag football. These campers will also enjoy daily afternoon activities including: swim activities, Jewish life, Israeli culture and music.

Habonim (Pioneers) Counselor-in-Training For teens entering grades 9–10. CIT blaze, the way for future generations of campers. This Counselor-in-Training (CIT) program is a leadership development program that provides hands-on learning experiences and is designed to prepare older children to become future leaders and camp counselors. CITs serve as mentors and assistants in Chaverim and Tze’Adim cabin groups throughout Camp Shai.

Drop-Off Parents enjoy easy drop-off and pick-up either at Denver JDS or at the Augustana Lutheran Church parking lot. Campers dropped off at Augustana can pay a transportation charge and take a bus to the Denver JDS. Extended day programs are available for busy families at the JCC.

Payment If your camp fees are not paid in full at the time of registration, reapplication may be necessary. No refunds for any reason will be made after the final payment deadline. All cancellations must be made in writing and submitted to the Camp Central office. Payment in full must accompany registrations for Sunrise and Sunset Post Camp and Last Chance Camp and all Lego® Camps. These payments are non-refundable.

Health Forms All children must have had a physical exam after Sept. 1, 2011. Camper information and health forms will be available to you online after your camper’s registration has been received and confirmed. Please complete and submit all forms online by Friday, May 18, 2012. If forms are not completed and returned to the Camp Central office prior to the beginning of camp, your camper will not be allowed to participate.

Children with Special Needs Camp Shai welcomes children with special needs who have completed kindergarten. Please call the Camp Central office to obtain an application. After you have submitted your application, an in-depth interview with the camp director will be conducted to determine your camper’s individual needs so that we can create a successful match between your camper and our programs. The Sunrise and Sunset Extended Day programs, which are fully integrated into Camp Shai’s programming, are available to all JCC campers who are entering grades K–10. Fees, which are non-refundable, must be paid in full at the time of registration. Drop-in care is based on availability, and fees are due the day of service by cash or check. CAMP SHAI SOUTH AT AMES

Changes to registrations for JCC and MACC camp programs may be made at no additional charge through Monday, April 16, 2012. Changes after April 16, 2012 will be charged a $15 administrative processing fee.

All changes must be made two weeks prior to the start of a camp session or program. The JCC and MACC are unable to offer refunds for absences or withdrawal from a program.

Payment If your camp fees are not paid in full at the time of registration, reapplication may be necessary. No refunds for any reason will be made after the final payment deadline. All cancellations must be made in writing and submitted to the Camp Central office. Payment in full must accompany registrations for all camp programs. These payments are non-refundable.

Health Forms All children must have had a physical exam after Sept. 1, 2011. Camper information and health forms will be available to you online after your camper’s registration has been received and confirmed. Please complete and submit all forms online by Friday, May 18, 2012. If forms are not completed and returned to the Camp Central office prior to the beginning of camp, your camper will not be allowed to participate.

Children with Special Needs Camp Shai welcomes children with special needs who have completed kindergarten. Please call the Camp Central office to obtain an application. After you have submitted your application, an in-depth interview with the camp director will be conducted to determine your camper’s individual needs so that we can create a successful match between your camper and our programs. Camp Shalom at the ECC Ages 2–5 ESTABLISHED IN 1935, the JCC Early Childhood Center (ECC) offers a high quality and enriching program for children twelve weeks to five years. CAMP

SHALOM at the ECC introduces young children to the fun of summer camp through AGE-APPRO-

PRIATE ACTIVITIES that range from CREATIVE ARTS to OUTDOOR GAMES. All programs are conducted on site at the JCC Early Childhood Center and children enjoy weekly SPECIAL EVENTS. All campers, ages three and up, enrolled in a full-day program participate in off-site field trips at least once per session. Our caring and experienced staff encourages EXPLORATION and

DISCOVERY, while nurturing regard for self and others. Children have the opportunity to EXPLORE NATURE AND SCIENCE, play, build SELF-ESTEEM and enjoy FRIENDSHIPS in small, nurturing groups in a JUDAIC SETTING. ECC Camp Registration

Scheduling

Children Currently Enrolled in the ECC: Parents of children who are currently enrolled in the ECC preschool or the Parent-Tot program will have received camp registration materials from the ECC, which includes a random lottery number and an assigned time slot for each family to register in person on Tuesday, Feb. 21 or Wednesday, Feb. 22 at which time a $150 per-session deposit is due.

Camp Shalom at the ECC, which serves children ages 2–5, offers a wide variety of scheduling options to meet each family’s needs. Our summer consists of three-week sessions.

Children of JCC Members: JCC families may register for camp by predesignated lottery number. The lottery number will also include the time on March 6 that you can come to the JCC to register. To receive your lottery number, please call the preschool.

General Community Registration: Non-ECC parents and non JCC members may register their child in person at the ECC. All registrations are accepted on a first-come, first-served basis. Please do not mail registration forms to the ECC.

Pick-Up and Escort If your child needs to be escorted to or from ECC Camps from other JCC/MACC programs on the JCC campus, you must notify the ECC and the other programs in writing prior to the start of camp.

Food Camp Shalom provides kosher snacks for all campers. Children should bring a dairy kosher sack lunch that they can enjoy in a group picnic setting. For menu suggestions, see page 3.

Cancellation and Tuition Policy

To plan the best possible summer for your child, you’ll want to set aside some time to familiarize yourself with the contents of this guide. Be sure to consult the E-Z Find Age Grid on inside front cover. If you are interested in combining classes at MACC with programs presented by our sister organization, the JCC, please refer to the JCC portion of the guide or use our E-Z grid. The number of programs and choices can be overwhelming, but our staff is eager to help you build the perfect summer for your child. Please contact us at (303) 316-6360.

Unless a program is cancelled by MACC or the JCC, all deposits and fees are non-refundable and non-transferable. We cannot refund fees or give credit for absences or temporary withdrawals.

MACC Academy Registration We are delighted to announce that MACC registration will be open almost one month earlier than previous years, on Feb. 12, and that registration can be completed in full online. We hope this helps families, especially those who mix and match Camp Shai with MACC academies, the ability to plan their summer earlier. We have also decided to eliminate our priority process as we have very few classes that close after the first day of registration. This beats the old days of waiting in long lines, dealing with complex lottery procedures or navigating full parking lots. Registration for all MACC programs opens on Wednesday, Feb. 15 at 9 a.m.

There are three ways to register: 1. Online. The most popular, convenient and comprehensive way to register.

Financial Assistance All MACC summer programs have financial assistance available. Families may obtain a scholarship application through the Camp Central office or by visiting our website at www.maccjcc.org. In order to be considered for financial assistance a completed registration form including deposit must be submitted. The deadline for scholarship applications is Friday, March 16, 2012. All inquiries and financial assistance applications are kept confidential. In the event that financial assistance is not accepted or the amount is not sufficient, all camp deposits will be refunded or credited to your account. Families will be notified in early May 2012.

Pricing All class listings include a guest price and a JCC member price. JCC membership is open to all. In most cases, parents registering for more than two classes should compare the pricing to determine whether purchasing a JCC Membership will actually save money. See membership information on page 2.

Children with Special Needs MACC strives to enhance the lives of children and teens with special needs by providing creative opportunities to participate in MACC programs to the fullest extent of their ability. Many of our programs welcome children with special needs; however it is imperative for parents to call in advance so that we can insure the best possible preparation in accommodating children with special needs. Please call the MACC office to schedule an appointment with the program director to determine your child’s individual needs and to create a successful match between your child and our programs. Equally, it should be noted that we have special scholarship opportunities for special needs children.

Lunch-In

Every student under the age of 12 must be signed in and out daily by a parent, guardian or sibling who is 16 years or older. Participants who are 12 or older do not have to follow this procedure. Supervised Lunch participants will be signed out of morning classes and into afternoon classes by staff. Please drop off and pick up campers in a timely manner. Your children will not be left unattended, but if you are late picking them up you will be charged for staff time.

Kosher Policy

Lunch-In, which is provided for your child’s safety, is open only to campers attending both morning and afternoon half-day programs.

The JCC/MACC campus is a kosher facility, and all lunches brought to the center by program participants must be meat-free. For a full explanation of JCC kashrut (kosher) policies, please call (303) 316-6383.

Medical Needs/Emergencies

Snacks Most classes at MACC’s summer academies will include a snack break.

We encourage all children to bring a kosher (non-meat) snack and a beverage to each day of class. You can also provide your child with the correct change for our vending machines where pop is available for $1.25, and candy or other snacks are available for $1.25 or less.

Lunch-In In an effort to provide continuity of care for children in morning and afternoon camps, the JCC and MACC are offering a new format for lunch and supervision between Noon and 1 p.m. Children who attend both a morning and an afternoon half-day program must register for “LunchIn” when registering. This program is open only to campers who attend both morning and afternoon half-day programs. Children who register for Lunch-In will be escorted from their morning camp to the Phillips Social Hall, where they will meet with a staff member from their afternoon camp group and go to a specific location to eat lunch. They will then travel with their afternoon camp group to that camp’s location for the duration of the afternoon. The fee for Lunch-In covers staff supervision only—please pack a lunch for your children. All meals brought to the JCC campus must conform to kosher guidelines.

Children under the age of 12 who participate in an all-day program may not be left unsupervised on the JCC campus. Parents of these children must either register for the Lunch-In program or provide an adult (16 years old or older) to supervise the child on the onehour lunch break. Children 12 years old and older who attend both a morning and an afternoon half-day programs must either 1) register for the Lunch-In program or 2) sign the Meal Release Waiver on the relevant registration forms. The waiver releases the MACC/JCC from the responsibility for supervising your child during the lunch period between camps. Please register for Lunch-In as you would register for any other MACC program.

Art Academy • Summer 2012 Grades 1–12 The VISUAL ARTS are vital to the development of your child’s imagination, self-esteem and interaction with and understanding of the world. At the MACC’s Art Academy, SKILLED ARTISTS, who are also experienced educators, nurture the CREATIVITY in every child.

Students have an intensive art experience using quality materials in a studio environment. Whether creating a life mask, drawing with a wide variety of quality materials, working in a clay studio or creating an environmental artwork, children will enjoy being immersed in art. Students can acquire essential SKILLS in TRADITIONAL

FORMS like drawing, painting, pottery and bronze casting. They are

also free to explore contemporary art forms such as fused glass and digital media including photography and filmmaking. Whether they’re creating useable objects or works of pure imagination, young artists will enjoy expressing their inner visions.

General Information Pick-Up of Completed Works Due to the nature of the fired-clay process used in all of our pottery classes, completed works will be available for pick-up in the clay studio or the hallway outside the clay studio by the Thursday following the completion of class. For your convenience, all work will be wrapped and tagged with the student’s name. Because storage space is limited, we encourage you to return as soon as possible to collect your child’s artwork.

Dress Your child will probably feel most free to be creative when he or she is dressed in play clothes. Art is often a messy process and, while we do provide smocks, we strongly recommend that your child wear clothing that you consider expendable.

Grade Levels All grade levels refer to the grade students will enter in the fall of 2012.

Students entering grade 3 may choose to participate either with older children in grades 3–6 or with younger children in grades 1–3. Likewise for students entering grade 6.

Instructor: Carol Redmond Join us for this unique experience painting from observation in an outdoor setting. We will explore the principles of composition, color mixing and brushstroke techniques using the outdoor environment as inspiration, a technique known as “Plein Air” painting. Students will work in the open air with both watercolor and water-mixable oil paints at Four Mile Historic Park. At the end of class, each student will take home a French-style portable easel, along with their own set of watermixable oil paints and brushes. PROFESSIONALS who are experienced in the art of theatre EDUCATION. At the younger ages, we emphasize a POSITIVE, nurturing style of teaching with students growing through ENCOURAGEMENT in an environment that supports their development as individuals and as artists. The Academy Is Different than Camp (For Grades 3 & up) The Wolf Theatre Academy’s summer experience should not be confused with a typical camp experience, which focuses on constant activity and stimulation. At the youngest ages (grades PreK–2), our classes are similar to those in camps, where programs are conducted as structured play.

However, at the older ages (grades 3 and up), we are a serious training academy where the focus of our program is quality performance. While students are supervised at all times during academy hours, all students in performance or production workshops will be expected to work on their own at home and when not directly working with faculty. Also, students with leading roles will be asked to spend significant time studying at home. We encourage parents who are looking for a more recreational camp experience to take this into consideration when making their summer choices.

A New Theatre: The Shwayder becomes The Elaine Wolf Theatre Many of you know that due to a generous gift from Elaine Wolf, our mainstage theatre space (formerly The Shwayder Theatre) has received a significant renovation. Our new space includes a mezzanine level with additional seating, a new accessible aisle in the orchestra, a new stage floor, as well as new lighting and sound systems. We hope you will join us in our exciting summer of mainstage productions as we inaugurate this state-of-the-art theatre facility.

Mainstage Production Sessions Patrons of our program should note that, again this year, our mainstage productions rehearse in one “camp”session and perform in the next “camp”session. This is to accommodate those students whose schools let out during the first few weeks in June. This might be an issue if parents are trying to match schedules for other three week programs. Check dates carefully and please feel free to call our staff for assistance if you have any questions.

Emily MacIntyre, Assistant Director of the Wolf Theatre Academy Emily MacIntyre, production manager of MACC for the last eight years, will assume a new responsibility this summer as the assistant director of the Wolf Theatre Academy (WTA). Many know Emily as a significant "behind the scenes" presence in all WTA activities. Her new duties will include assisting WTA director, Steve Wilson, in communicating with parents, students and faculty to insure the highest-quality experience possible - much like a school vice principal. Congratulations Emily.

Grade Levels & New Afternoon Option for Preschool Students (Ages 4-6) All grade levels refer to the grade students will be entering in the fall of 2012. Students in grades 3 and 6 generally have two options. They may participate with younger students, which gives them greater responsibility and the possibility of larger roles in Dramatics Performance Work-

There will be no Academy rehearsals or performances on Friday evenings or at any time on Saturdays. This summer begins with a short week of programming (Tuesday, May 29–Sunday, June 3, no classes taking place on Monday, May 28, Memorial Day). Please note also that some workshops have mandatory rehearsals on Father’s Day (Sunday, June 17).

Families planning activities or trips on Father’s Day should not sign up for classes that conflict with their plans. Also, again this year there will be no MACC classes or rehearsals on Wednesday, July 4 in observance of the Independence Day holiday.

Recommendations and further instructions will be provided once you sign up. It should also be noted that students are strongly encouraged to familiarize themselves with the music from the show before the first day of this workshop.

Casting While the objective of the summer performance classes at the Wolf Theatre Academy is to give all students equal opportunities, we cannot promise specific parts to any student, and no student should expect a leading role or preferential treatment in any production. We make every effort to ensure that all children are engaged by the collaborative effort needed to put on a play, and that every student finishes the session with a positive feeling. Some children, especially those who have less theatrical experience or who are moving into a new age category, may initially be disappointed with their casting. Parents should understand that even if a child is disappointed with his or her casting, tuition cannot be refunded.

This all-day intensive workshop, designed for both younger and older students, is valuable for beginners and experienced auditioners alike. This class will prepare students for every type of theatrical audition, from the Wolf Theatre Academy’s mainstage productions to school productions, college entrance auditions, community and professional theatre. You’ll learn the secrets of a successful audition, from effective piece selection to preparation, presentation, resumes, cold-readings and more. This class will also include professional theatre head shot pictures as part of the class. All students will need to prepare a short (one minute), memorized monologue for the first day of class (call for suggestions if you are unfamiliar with monologue preparation). Students interested in musical theatre can also prepare 16 bars of a song. If you want to learn more about the difficult and mysterious process of auditions, this class is for you!

Though Puss has not truly forgiven Humpty, he decides to reunite to steal the goose that lays golden eggs. Joining them for the adventure of nine lifetimes is beautiful and notorious cat burglar, Kitty Softpaws. Join us as we work together to build our own sets and props and then perform this modern fairy tale for parents and friends on the final day of class.

Percy Jackson is about to be kicked out of boarding school...again. And that's the least of his troubles. Lately, mythological monsters and the gods of Mount Olympus seem to be walking straight out of the pages of Percy's Greek mythology textbook and into his life.

And worse, he's angered a few of them. Zeus's master lightning bolt has been stolen, and Percy is the prime suspect. Now Percy and his friends have just ten days to find and return Zeus's stolen property and bring peace to a warring Mount Olympus. But to succeed on his quest, Percy will have to do more than catch the true thief: he must come to terms with the father who abandoned him; solve the riddle of the Oracle, which warns him of betrayal by a friend; and unravel a treachery more powerful than the gods themselves. Sullivan (Sulley) and Mike Wazowski pick up their paychecks at Monsters Inc., the utility company that generates energy from the goose bumps of children. Sulley, the No. 1 scream-generator at the plant accidentally lets a little girl named Boo into the monster world.

Since monsters are actually terrified of children it's a major cause for alarm and when the evil Randall finds out it’s a major headache for Sulley and Mike. Join us as we work together building our own sets and props before we share our cuddly monster adventure with parents and friends on the final day of class.

When her father doesn’t return from a trip to the local fair, Belle rushes off to find him.

Instead of scaring villagers away like he used to, Shrek has become bored with family life. Longing for the days when he felt like a "real ogre," Shrek is tricked into signing a pact with the smooth-talking dealmaker, Rumpelstiltskin. Shrek suddenly finds himself in a twisted, alternate version of Far Far Away, where ogres are hunted,Rumplestiltskin is king, Donkey is an intellectual, Lord Farquaad is still alive and Shrek and Fiona have never met. Now, it's up to Shrek to undo all of Rumpelstiltskin's mischief in the hopes of saving his friends, restoring his world, and reclaiming his One True Love and family. Creatively charge your preschooler as we combine drama and art in a full afternoon of imagination stimulation! We will use stories about the world of Pixie Hollow created by the Disney Fairies books and movies. Follow the adventures of Tinkerbell and her friends Rani, the water fairy, Beck, the animal fairy, Queen Clarion and many more. We’ll stretch our wings and fly away to magical adventures with Tink and her friends. Each day one or two new tales are read aloud (or videos are shown), then art projects are utilized to create sets and props and finally students act out the stories.

A limited number of technical apprenticeship positions are offered in conjunction with each Academy Production Workshop. Apprentices will enjoy personal instruction and hands-on experience working with the production’s backstage elements, which include sets, lights, sound and props (costume work not included in this workshop) using the state-ofthe-art equipment of the 410-seat, newly renovated Elaine Wolf Theatre.

Students work side-by-side with the MACC’s production manager, summer technical director and professional designers. Each student then fills a technical crew position for the session’s mainstage production. **Students in grade 7 who have technical experience working on at least two mainstage theatre productions (school or professional) may petition for admittance into this class.

Andy is departing for college, and his toys, including Woody and Buzz, are going to be put in the attic. Before they can be put in the attic, they are accidentally thrown away and are picked up by the garbage men. The toys find themselves at a local day-care center, where they must try to survive the playful but careless pre-school children. Woody attempts to save his friends and find themselves a new home, but matters are further complicated when Buzz is damaged during an escape attempt. The toys try to reset Buzz, but end up causing him to revert to a Spanish version, much to the other toys' discomfort. Join us as we create sets and props before we share our toy adventure with parents and friends on the final day of class.

Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince chronicles Harry’s sixth year at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. The war against Voldemort is not going well; even Muggle governments are noticing.

Ron scans the obituary pages of the Daily Prophet, looking for familiar names. Dumbledore is absent from Hogwarts for long stretches of time, and the Order of the Phoenix has already suffered losses. And yet, as in all wars, life goes on. Sixth-year students learn to Apparate - and lose a few eyebrows in the process. The Weasley twins expand their business. Teenagers flirt and fight and study for finals. Classes are never straightforward, though Harry receives some extraordinary help from the mysterious Half-Blood Prince. So it's the home front that takes center stage in the multilayered sixth installment of the story of Harry Potter. Here at Hogwarts, Harry will search for the full and complex story of the boy who became Lord Voldemort -- and thereby find what may be his only vulnerability. Our Staff

The mission of the JCC Ranch Camp is to provide a residential camping experience that enables children to strengthen their Jewish identity, become more caring members of society and connect with the natural world through challenging, fun, growth-oriented activities.

In fulfilling its mission, the JCC Ranch Camp provides:

• A safe place for children to be cared for by qualified professionals, with a commitment to safety, supervision and Judaic programming.

With an average of 150 campers per session, small cabin groups and low camper-to-staff ratios, Ranch Camp offers an intimate community. Our outgoing, enthusiastic counselors are required to go through background checks and complete an intensive training program. Staff are trained in CPR and First Aid, and many also carry other specialty certifications.

Some counselors are former Ranch Campers, while others join our camp family from around the United States, Australia, New Zealand, and Europe. All staff members are selected based on their experience working with children and their commitment to making a positive difference in the lives of campers.

About Us Our Site Since 1953, the JCC Ranch Camp, located in Colorado’s beautiful Black Forest, has served thousands of campers from across the country and world. The camp, which is owned and operated by the Robert E. Loup Jewish Community Center in Denver, is open to children entering grades 2–11 with programs designed specifically for each age. Campers reside in log cabins in groups of eight to twelve with three to four counselors.

All buildings are within a central area surrounded by hundreds of pineshaded spots for hiking, mountain biking, climbing, camping, and exploring. The facilities include accommodations for over 40 horses.

Ranch Camp offers one of the best equestrian programs to be found in a Jewish camp setting nationwide.

JCC Ranch Camp offers a heated outdoor swimming pool, a technical rock climbing wall, a low-elements ropes course, a high-elements challenge course and zip line, sports field and basketball court, nature and crafts centers, and miles and miles of beautiful trails on our 400 acres of Colorado ranch land.

Pack ‘n Ride is for our horse-crazy campers who have spent at least two summers with us in the EQ Program. On this amazing trip, you will combine horsemanship skills with the beauty of a wilderness experience. Not only will you be able to utilize the skills you have learned in the EQ Program, but you will also be able to add many horsemanship and camping skills that are important for any cowboy or girl. Pack 'n Ride consists of a 6-day horse pack trip, day at the Hot Springs and a community service project.

This program is for campers entering grades 8–10 who have participated in the EQ Program for at least two summers; children who do not meet these two criteria will not be admitted into this camping program.

The Wrangler-in-Training (WIT) program is a hands-on training program to develop leadership skills in our equestrian program. WIT participants live with campers, learn the basic elements of becoming a corral staff member, develop safe horsemanship practices and receive training and supervision from members of our senior corral staff. WIT program participants focus on developing their horsemanship, riding and instructing skills. Our goal is to provide high quality learning opportunities that provide participants with the types of experiences and skills that will enable them to be successful wranglers and riding instructors at Ranch Camp or any other camp of their choosing.
