“Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. develops leaders, promotes brotherhood and academic excellence, while providing service and advocacy for our communities.”
In the Fall of 1983, several alumni brothers of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. living in Summerville and Moncks Corner, SC were concerned about the academic performance of African American males in the school systems of both Berkeley and Dorchester counties. Additionally, the brothers of Alpha desired to see an increase in the level of community service which Black Greek-lettered organizations are uniquely suited to provide. So on January 18, 1984, The Xi Phi Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. was chartered in Summerville, SC. Charter members included the following: Brothers Roscoe C. Bacote, Bro. Julius Barnes, Bro. William L. Baylor, II, Bro. Daniel Bland, Bro. Alfonzo Greene, Bro. Timothy Greene and Bro. Bernett W. Mazyck; who also served as the chapter’s first President. The first meetings were held at the Holiday Inn Hotel in Summerville, SC. Shortly thereafter, meetings were held at the homes of Bro. Bernett Mazyck, Bro. Timothy Green, Bro. William Baylor, as well as the Cuthbert Community Center, and now the Farmers and Merchant Bank on the 1st Saturday of each month.
During its formative years, the brothers of Xi Phi Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. established mentorship programs in the area high schools, scholarship programs for students graduating from Berkeley and Dorchester counties who were accepted into colleges and universities in South Carolina and beyond, as well as well as community service projects focusing on the elderly. The brothers of Xi Phi Lambda brought to Berkeley and Dorchester counties such national programs of the fraternity as A Voteless People is a Hopeless People, Project Alpha and Go to High School Go to College. With the presence of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. solidly established in Berkeley and Dorchester counties, the youth of the area had solid role models and examples of successful, professional college-educated African American men in which to emulate. Additionally, the brothers of Xi Phi Lambda Chapter quickly assumed the role of advisor to the undergraduate chapter (Mu Pi Chapter) of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. located at Charleston Southern University. This partnership ensured that the undergraduate brothers had the benefit of the wisdom and guidance of professional Alphas, which set a standard of success for the younger brothers.
Over the last few years, the chapter’s membership has increased and its presence has contributed greatly to the local community of Summerville and the surrounding areas. Xi Phi Lambda proudly takes part in Project Alpha; A Voteless People, Is A Hopeless People Voters’ Registration effort; the Brother’s Keeper Program; Go to High School, Go to College Program; the March of Dimes – March for Babies Campaign and the Annual Salvation Army Holiday Bell Ringing. Currently, the Chapter has a membership of close to 40 active members from a variety of fields including but not limited to: Education, Business, Legal and Law Enforcement, Sciences, Technology, Engineering, and the Armed Forces.

An Alpha Phi Alpha man’s attitude should not be “how much can I derive from the Fraternity” but “how much can I do for the Fraternity?” In proportion to what he does for his Chapter and for Alpha Phi Alpha will a member receive lasting benefits from the Fraternity to himself in the way of self-development by duty well done, and the respect of the Brothers well served.
A member’s duties should be:
1. Prompt payment of all financial obligations, the prime requisite for successful fraternal life.
2. The doing of good scholastic work in his chosen vocation, thereby accomplishing the real end of a college course.
3. The reasonable endeavor to participate in general college activities and social service and to excel therein.
4. The proper consideration of all things with appropriate attention to the high moral standard of Alpha Phi Alpha.
Virtual and In-Person reclamation efforts and social activities during the pandemic/endemic continue to strengthen the Brotherhood bond while bringing Brothers back into the fold. We have continued to reach out to brothers in the area and invite them to every social event of the chapter, as well as our monthly meetings. We are excited to share we have reclaimed 8 Brothers this year due to our efforts. This year we hosted a Reclamation Brotherhood Smoke, where inactive brothers were able to fellowship with the brothers of Xi Phi Lambda. In addition, we have participated in the Lowcountry Fellowship and Reclamation Cookout annually. We were grateful to cohost this year’s event with the Xi Gamma Lambda Chapter, Lowcountry Alphas this year. Xi Phi Lambda also hosted an email letter campaign that reached out to approximately 125 inactive brothers in the Lowcounty area. The letter, written by Chapter President Brother Martelle T. Morrison, expressed the desire to reconnect with the inactive brothers and invite them to chapter meetings and events.

Xi Phi Lambda prides itself for its economic impact to the community through our service, scholarship awards, charitable giving, educational forums and community partnerships.

Xi Phi Lambda partners with one of our chapter brothers, Brother Troy McClain, in his efforts to feed the community during Thanksgiving. This fraternal year the chapter was able to bless 200 families with food and groceries during the Thanksgiving holiday. The most inspiring part of the Thanksgiving Blessing Box was the chapter’s ability to hand deliver the food to the families in need and to interact with the community.
Through the Alpha First Day of School Initiative, a project led by our S.A.C.E. Committee, Brother Marcus Clark and Brother Antonio White. The Brotherhood attended various back to school events at local schools and even participated in the Berkeley County Day One Festival. We are most proud to boast that Brother Jermaine Joyner is the proud new principal of one of our area schools; along with various brothers serving on the county school boards and in leadership positions in the school districts.
One of the hallmarks of the Xi Phi Lambda chapter is our annual MLK Jr. Scholarship Oratorical Program. Young people in middle schools compete in the virtual oratorical program to not only win a financial award, but also to hone their oratory skills. This year’s program was hosted by News 5 anchor, Raphael James.
Xi Phi Lambda partners with Habitat for Humanity, a global nonprofit housing organization working in local communities across all 50 states in the U.S. and in approximately 70 countries. Habitat’s vision is of a world where everyone has a decent place to live. Habitat works toward our vision by building strength, stability and self-reliance in partnership with families in need of decent and affordable housing.
Many brothers in Xi Phi Lambda chapter have been trained and participate in the Cops and Kids Program. The Cops and Kids Foundation provides police departments with the tools and funding necessary to implement our award winning community service programs.
The Brothers of Xi Phi Lambda served as one of the sponsor organization for the Berkely County County-wide Trunk or Treat. The trunk-or-treating event served as a safer, less-spooky alternative to traditional trick-or-treating. During this event, brothers decorated the trunks of their vehicles in Halloween-themed decor and passed out candy or other goodies to the children in the community.
Xi Phi Lambda participated in its annual Christmas Toy Drive to serve the community. This year the brothers were able to donate over 125 toys valued at $1,400.00. The blessing was also found in the brothers gathering to deliver the toys to the homes of those families in need.

Formally called the A. Charles Haston Brother’s Keeper program, this service program developed with the mission of advocating and improving the quality of life for Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.’s senior brothers, their spouses and widows; brothers who are retired and have disabilities or ailments; and vulnerable community members. The brothers of Xi Phi Lambda continue to share in this program by assisting the widows of our charter members by cleaning their yards along with servicing our brother who are elderly or have health challenges.
“A Voteless People is a Hopeless People” (aka VPHP) was initiated as a National Program of Alpha during the 1930’s when many African Americans had the right to vote but were prevented from voting because of poll taxes, threats of reprisal, and lack of education about the voting process. Voter education and registration have remained a dominant focus of this outreach activity for over 65 years. In the 1990’s, the focus shifted to include political awareness and empowerment, delivered most frequently through town meetings and candidate forums.
The “Go-to-High-School, Go-to-College” program, established in 1922, concentrates on the importance of completing secondary and collegiate education as a road to advancement. This year’s program partnered with the Legacy Flight Academy where brothers helped to share with high school students the importance of choosing a career that will catapult their future.
