SCORING SYSTEM Presented in jacket form, the Crest is the most prestigious award in competitive sailfishing. It symbolizes achievement at the highest level in the sport. To don this coat of arms a team will have to perform at a high level across all legs in the series. The scoring format assigns a score based on where a team finishes in each tournament. BAR SOUTH CLAIMS VICTORY AND MISS ANNIE SCORES THE $371,700 RELEASE ROUND-UP JACKPOT AT OPERATION SAILFISH The seas were rough, but that didn’t slow down the competition.

Singer Island, FL ( Janury 21, 2020 ) – On January 15-19th, the 2020 Quest for the Crest Sailfish Series kicked off with its first leg, Operation Sailfish, hosted at Sailfish Resort & Marina in Palm Beach.

45 teams competed with hopes of claiming the Champion’s Dog Tags, the highly anticipated “Release Round-Up” $371,700 calcutta, and a piece of the $824,925 purse that was up for grabs.

Homefront, event activities included a “Take a Hero Fishing Day” where tournament teams had the opportunity to show their appreciation for our United States military with a fun day of fishing before the tournament competition got underway. 16 teams hosted 30 veterans and active duty military men and women. Team Miss Annie won the “High Point Team” with 5 releases, hero Zack Hornby won “Heaviest Fish” with a 25.6 lb. king on Native Son, Just Do

It won “Most Patriotic Team”, and hero John Clapsaddle won “High Point Hero” on Old No. 7 along with a Margaritaville vacation package courtesy of Landshark Lager.

A steady northeast wind on Day 1 had the seas kicked up and teams ready for action.

They got just what they were looking for with a total of 187 releases on the first day. The leader board jumped around all day between a few teams including BAR South, Double Take, Family Matters, Native Son, and Osh-It.

Captain Raul Gonzalez and his team on BAR South caught fire in the afternoon with an additional 9 releases, for a total of 12 for the day and a first place daily worth over $50,000. Double Take stayed consistent with releases in both the first and second half of the day for a total of 10 releases and a second-place daily worth $22,950.

With a $371,700 winner-take-all jackpot, the “Release Round-up” was the talk of the tournament. By the final round on Day 2, three teams were still alive in contention for the massive jackpot: Jichi, Miss Annie, and De-Bait-Able. Number one was drawn as the final number and the entire fleet knew that one of the teams was on the cusp of a record smashing payout. All 3 teams released enough fish in the final round, but it was Miss Annie that owned the afternoon with 6 releases to claim the jackpot and a total

winnings of $474,130! They finished the tournament in second place with 17 releases.

Captain Jamie Ralph and his Team Old No.7 rounded out the leaderboard moving from 13th place on Day 1 to 3rd place on Day 2, with a total of 14 releases and a check for $34,290. Team Double Take

finished 4th overall with 14 releases and a $25,450 pay day. Team Osh-It had a solid showing with 14 releases that included the master angler title for Tyler Walsh with 8 releases. Jill Yates of team Eight Eights was the Top Female Angler with 5 releases, all coming on day 2 of the tournament.

The heaviest fish of the tournament in the Grizzly Coolers sponsored “Grand Daddy” category was a 39.8-pound kingfish landed by the Family Matters team. They nabbed a check for $22,050 in bonus meat-fish money. Bryce Statham and his Blue Moon fishing team dominated the aggregate weight division posting 180.9 pounds of fish over the 2-day competition. They earned $17,990 in two daily payouts plus first place aggregate weight. A total of 373 sailfish were released over two days. For a complete list of results visit: operationsailfish.com

MEATFISH STEAL THE SHOW AT THE SAILFISH CHALLENGE Reel Estate/Shell Yeah Wins Their 1st Quest for the Crest Tournament!

Pompano Beach, FL (February 25, 2020) – The 17th Annual Sailfish Challenge was one for the history books in many ways. 55 teams were treated to an amazing kick-off party hosted for the first time by “Oceanic” at Pompano Beach Pier, a premier new seafood & steak restaurant located on the beach in Pompano. The tournament partnered with Costa and their “OneCoast” initiative to help with the ongoing fundraising effort for Bahamas Relief from Hurricane Dorian.

Team FFMD won the “Lucky Fish” 50/50 raffle at the kick-off party and generously donated their winnings back to OneCoast!

An approaching cold-front brought strong northerly winds on Day 1 of the tournament with the teams fishing on the north end of the boundary battling the roughest conditions.

With the fleet spread out from Jupiter to Miami, it was a slow pick for most of the day up and down the line. As time pressed on, the boats to the south managed to find a few more fish than their competitors to the north. Three boats, Doing it All/Hardway, Reel Addiction, and Potential finished the day in a three-way tie with 4 releases, but it was Doing it All/Hardway that came out on top, based on time, in their Yamaha powered

39’ Contender. Reel Addiction were the big money winners on Day 1 with daily winnings of $51,705. Team Chop it Up had the best meatfish catch of the day with 118.8 pounds that earned them a daily payout of $7,560.

Heading into Day 2, a forecast for gale force winds and 12 to 15-foot seas led to a postponed fishing schedule from Saturday to Sunday. While the seas improved on Sunday, the sailfish bite remained slow. Despite tough fishing, team Reel Estate/Shell Yeah stayed steady on their Mercury powered 39’ SeaVee releasing 3 fish before noon to jump into the lead with 6 releases. day pressed on teams Jichi, Reel Addiction, and Doing it All/Hardway evened the score with 6 releases a piece as well. It was a battle to the end, but Reel Estate/Shell Yeah was able to hang on to their time-based lead and win the tournament, earning a check for $38,125.

Jichi finished in 2nd overall with 6 releases and a massive check for $204,095! Reel Addiction finished in 3rd with winnings of $67,275 followed by Doing it All/Hardway in 4th with 13,075 and Bar South in 5th with 5 releases and a $47,405 payday.

Without question, it was the exceptional meat fishing action that created all the buzz in the 2020 Sailfish Challenge. A red-hot kingfish bite off Palm Beach had crews battling to keep baits in the water all day.

Team Chop it Up improved on their Day 1 catch with four massive kings on Sunday that ranged from 31.2 to 49.8 pounds for a total weight of 156.1. They posted a combined weight of 274.9 pounds over the two days of fishing to win the aggregate weight division and a check for $22,590.

By midday on Day 2, rumors were flying around about a record setting meatfish catch on board team Old No 7. When they arrived at the dock in Palm Beach the rumors were put to rest. Not one, but two giant wahoo, plus a

cobia and a kingfish were on their way to the scale. Both wahoo, set new tournament records in their category with the first fishing weighing in at 84.7 pounds and the second at 85.5 pounds! Even more amazing, both fish were caught on 16-pound test line, and 30-pound leader with a circle hook! Their 4-fish bag on Day 2 was an astounding 223.9 pounds, for

a 56-pound average per fish! Old No 7 won $39,080 in meatfish money and earned a bonus $1,000 gift certificate from Grizzly coolers for the heaviest fish of the tournament.

The 3rd Annual Coin Challenge competition kept the team spirit alive during the tournament. Seven groups of 8 teams mixed it up to see which color group would come out on top and win the commemorative challenge coins. In the end, the blue color group emerged victorious with a total of 26 releases. Team Native Son was the grand prize winner, earning a 3 day/2 night vacation package to Margaritaville Hollywood Beach Resort courtesy of Landshark Lager.

Nicole Paul-Hus on team SkipJac 2 was the top female angler with 1 release and Benji Fernandez on team Potential was the master angler of the tournament with 3 releases.

Branch Office defended their Non-Pro division title for the third year in a row with 2 releases.

The tournament concluded at Blue Moon Fish Company, a 5-star restaurant on the beautiful intracoastal in Lauderdale-by-theSea. Anglers indulged on an amazing array of food and Reel Estate/Shell Yeah was treated to a delicious steak and lobster dinner at the champions table for the tournament. ç

By Jamie Bunn In 25 years of running fishing tournaments, we have had to overcome many obstacles, but a global pandemic is certainly a first. Like all businesses, we have worked through a steady dose of “On the Job Training” with COVID-19, without any playbook to refer to. As if a global pandemic were not enough, in the midst of writing this story, we are only days past a near miss with Hurricane Isaias that skirted along the coast of Florida with heavier impacts to the Carolinas and northeast. With all that said, we are still here, and the spirit of our industry and the fishing community is stronger than ever!

Looking back on the first leg of the 2020 Quest for the Crest Series, Operation Sailfish, hosted at Sailfish Marina in West Palm Beach, witnessed its most notorious year to date. Miss Annie won the acclaimed Release Round-Up and cashed the single largest check in the history of any sailfish tournament at an astounding $474,130! Bar South had a phenomenal tournament finishing in first place with 21 releases and a hefty payout of $201,925.

The Sailfish Challenge, Leg 2 of the series, ushered in some new and exciting changes this season as well. The kickoff party relocated to Oceanic, a popular new restaurant located oceanfront in the heart of Pompano Beach. With a complete second floor dedicated for private events, Sailfish Challenge anglers had a front row seat of the best ocean view in town with a decadent spread of food compliments of Oceanic. The night included a variety of fun activities including a ‘Lucky Fish’ contest to raise money for the tournament’s charitable relief effort to support those impacted

by Hurricane Dorian in the Bahamas. Team Reel Estate/Shell Yeah notched their first ever Quest for the Crest victory with 6 releases and a check for $38,125. Jichi finished in second on time with 6 releases but still managed to cash the largest check of the tournament at $204,095.

Thanks to the direct feedback of our anglers, many new changes were implemented in the 2020 sailfish series. Most notable was the addition of a significant amount of meatfish prize structure in the tournaments. Sailfish Marina for the Sailfish Challenge. The largest fish weighed in at 85.7 pounds and the second fish was almost its twin at 84.7 pounds! The memories will last forever, and they should be able to get some pretty good mileage out of their $37,080 in meatfish money too!

The competition was tight, and momentum was building heading into Final Sail, the grand finale of the series, held in Miami Beach at the Doubletree Grand.

And then, the “Emergency Order” brake got pulled as cases surrounding the COVID-19 outbreak continued to climb.

The 2020 Final Sail fell victim to the corona virus, as the entire state of Florida was ordered into a shelter at home mandate. The cancellation of Final Sail was a deflating way to close the season, however the welfare of our anglers is most important, and we are now prepping for an even bigger and better Final Sail in 2021!

With the pause button hit on the 2020 series standings, the 2021 Quest for the Crest will see two sets of burgundy jackets handed out; one for the 2021 champions and the second for the 2020 champions. The results of the 2020 series will be determined based on the Continued on page 28 ››

standings through the first two legs of the 2020 series plus the results of Final Sail in 2021.

Currently, Team Bar South is leading the fleet with 57 points followed by Jichi in second with 51 points and Reel Estate/ Shell Yeah in third with 49 points. Bar South has the opportunity to become the first team in the history of the series to add a second jacket to their collection.

The addition of new meatfish prize categories in 2020 included a new award for the top overall meatfish team in the series. Team Blue Moon swept the aggregate weight categories of Leg 1 and Leg 2 to surmount a commanding lead in the series with 455.8 points. Springtime meatfishing off Miami is typically on fire and should make for an exciting and fun new twist to the Final Sail event next year. A custom set of hand-crafted gaffs from Captain Randy Towe is up for grabs to the top meatfish team in the series as well as a set of custom rods to the sailfish champions.

to be learned from what we have experienced. As a result of COVID-19, we have looked at ways that we can grow both personally and professionally. Our team here at Bluewater Movements stepped back and evaluated new strategies and techniques that we could implement to continue to deliver the highest quality product that has defined our company for the past 25 years, and there has been much good to come from that process.

With stores closed and the distribution of our summer series magazine impossible at the onset of the pandemic in March, we also launched a digital version of the magazine for the first time that has proven to be yet another great resource for anglers online, and an additional platform for our sponsors to reach their target audience. We will continue that platform into 2021 with the sailfish series as well. Our YouTube channel is growing every day and we continue to receive many compliments about the quality of the content we are producing for the angling community. You ain’t seen nothin’ yet! There have been other exciting discoveries that we look forward to sharing with all of you in the future as well! In the meantime, stay safe and healthy and most importantly‌keep fishing! Once COVID-19 is behind us and we can all reunite again in larger groups, we look forward to hosting a post season BLUEWATER BASH with all of our anglers and friends in the fishing community!
