3Peat A Champion’s Story Springtime means something different for everyone. For the Blue Moon crew, it means it’s finally time to do away with circle hooks and seven lines and break out the J-Hooks and meat fishing arsenal. Springtime fishing in South Florida is always phenomenal and typically peaks around the premier event of the summer circuit, The Saltwater Shootout. You can bet our team was pumped to compete. Leading up to any tournament, our preparation is centered around one mantra: time on the water. The first three days of pre-fishing yielded plenty of decent sized tunas and kings off the flat tops. Aside from battling a 200+lb yellowfin tuna for over four hours on Thursday, we struggled to find the bite we found on previous days. Once Friday rolled around, excitement amongst our crew was peaking. With the majority of our team on board, we headed north out of Hillsboro Inlet and started fishing off Lake Worth. We boated three blackfins on our initial drifts, but unfortunately couldn’t get the kingfish to cooperate. After working our way up the line for the next few hours, we made a move back South. The tide had picked up outside of Boynton Inlet, so we decided to finish the day there. On our final drifts of pre-fishing, we caught three kings around 20lbs and a bonus 25lb cobia – not much but encouraging. After offloading fish, cleaning the boat, and collecting reports from the rest of the fleet, we began to formulate a plan for the next day. It’s Saturday: Gameday. The entire team was confident, optimistic, and mostly FIRED UP. Our A-Team for the day was my Father, Bryce Statham,

Captain Zach Mahfood, Troy McDonald, Thomas Armillotto, Jeff Sealey, and myself. Once our Mercury Powered 34ft SeaVeeZ was loaded to the brim with fresh tackle from T&R, hundreds of assorted live baits, food, and ice, it was time for a beer rally as we headed for checkout. Reports from the fleet indicated a solid kingfish bite off Jupiter and tunas scattered up and down the line. Our game plan was to try catching our Kings early off Boynton, and our tunas off Lake Worth once satisfied with our Kingfish haul. As 7:00AM hit and Jamie’s send-off sounded over the radio, the throttles were pinned, and the radio maxed out to Choppa Style. When Zach pulled up on the south side of Boynton Inlet, we were greeted with light SE winds, north tide, and decent water. Thomas, Troy, and Zach fired out the flatline side as My Dad, Jeff and I built our three kites. Within minutes, all baits were set, and the tunas were ready to eat. The initial mayhem produced three solid Blackfins around 20lbs – a great ice breaker. The remainder of the drift was quiet, until we noticed a shallow rip with a blue/green to dirty green color change. Our few king bites on Friday stretched into 80ft, so we decided to take it in shallow. As soon as our kite baits touched that nasty green water, three nice kings went airborne! We made quick work of our first two bites, adding Kingfish of 20 and 25lbs to the box; the third fish, however, was acting like the one. After burning off 80yds of line in an instant, we finally got the fish close to the boat. The only noise heard on the boat was Zach whispering to himself, “That's over 40. Easy.” Just one foot
before sinking the gaff, the fish made one last run and ate through the titanium before giving us another shot. Heartbreaker! Almost simultaneously, the middle bait popped out of the clip. I grabbed the rod and the fish punched it offshore. We turned and burned in pursuit of what was acting like a nice king. Once close enough to get a shot, Thomas reached out and stuck him. The fish went berserk, tearing the gaff out and sounding deep. We calmly collected ourselves and prayed for another chance at this fish. A few stressful minutes later, we capitalized and added a 40+lb king to the box. After a shaky, yet encouraging first drift, Zach tracked back through the parking lot of boats to reset. When the bite slowed and boat traffic increased over our next two drifts, our unanimous decision was to run north where we had caught fish earlier in the week. At 11:30, we fired the spread out in front of the Flat Tops. Our first drift yielded a teenage king and two teenage tunas. While relieved to finally have 4&4, we still needed to upgrade if we wanted to compete with the heavy weights caught in the Shootout every year. Thankfully, my Dad stepped it up on the next two drifts, catching back-to-back kings over 30lbs-- two HUGE upgrades. We grinded out the next few hours in the same area with no sign of a heavier tuna. After hearing a report of afternoon tuna bites off the Martini Tower, it was time for a 3:00PM hail mary. It wasn’t until Thomas assessed the fishbox and repeatedly said, “Wow, he grew” that we began to have confidence in our catch. At 3:45, just before sneaking in the last spread of the day, a chunky tuna aired out completely on the back short! Jeff “Buzzerbeater” Sealey made quick work of that 24lb blackfin, securing a crucial 7lb improvement. On that note, we headed south and capped off the day just how we started: beer rally. Once passed the Hillsboro lighthouse, we locked into the live scoring and took turns guessing just how heavy our bag was. We easily peer pressured my Dad into rafting up at the Sands, and began watching boats bring their fish on stage. As soon as my feet hit the dock, I heard Big Rick yell, “214lbs for Digger Rich!” – Tough to beat. Finally, after hearing many other team names over the microphone, it was our turn to see where we stacked up. When our total surpassed 221lbs, we were shocked! We celebrated for a moment before starting the extremely anxious wait. After what felt like a lifetime, the last boat took the stage, the dust settled, and the REAL celebration ensued. Victory over the 113 boat fleet, including most of the best fishermen in South Florida, was both an exciting and humbling feat. To combat our severe headaches the next day, the crew met for
a celebratory brunch at Blue Moon Fish Company before heading to the civic center for awards. We laughed, collected golf checks exceeding $25,000, and reminisced on a day that we wouldn’t soon forget! A huge congratulations goes out to all other winners of the 2019 Saltwater Shootout! Just 4 days after this ultimate high point, we received the news that our beloved teammate, Troy McDonald, had tragically passed away. Our entire crew was taken over by complete surprise and devastation. While we only had the privilege of knowing and fishing with Troy for a few short weeks, he taught us all SO much; most importantly, to live life to the fullest. Troy was enthusiastic, loving, and had a passion for the water unlike any other I’ve seen. Luckily, we know T-Roy will be with us in spirit every step of the way, fishing right there beside us in all future tournaments. In the ensuing weeks, our crew kept our nose to the grindstone and held true to our mantra: Time on the Water. With four kingfish, four tunas, and a bonus cobia totaling 185.6lbs, we were fortunate enough to take another win in the “Not the Rodeo” fishing tournament the very next weekend! While we took time to celebrate this victory, we were locked into one goal: The Showdown Crown. May passed and rolled into June; it was time to buckle down and gear up for the Saltwater Slam. The Slam is oftentimes a quirky tournament as the insane days of fishing experienced in May and late April are much harder to come by; however, a few teams always land on the meat. We worked our tails off pre-fishing, finding tunas and kings scattered up the line, making our game plan difficult. Saturday arrived and it was decision time. Sticking with our gut, we headed for Boynton Inlet at the sound of the Bimini Start. Our first drifts of the morning yielded two decent Blackfins, and three
Once the results were oicial and we heard “Blue Moon” announced over the mic, we couldn’t believe it! Hours upon hours of hard work throughout the summer had finay culminated to the most prestigious victory in meat fishing. Spring is coming once again and we are hopeful that we can duplicate the great success we had in 2019. teenage kingfish – a solid start for June. The bite quickly shut off and we decided to run south where we heard of a few kings being caught. At 12:30PM, we put the spread out just north of Boca Inlet. Battling through hungry schools of bonitas and tough conditions, we got lucky enough to add our 4th weigher king to the box. With a big storm pushing north, we played it safe, sucked in our baits and pushed through the gnarly thunderstorm standing between us and home. Our final drifts of the day off Hillsboro only produced more bonitas and frustration from tough conditions. After safely making it back to Lighthouse Point Marina, we were pleasantly surprised that our catch accumulated to 107.2lbs and a 7th place finish. While disappointed in falling short, we were encouraged to know that we were still within striking distance of the coveted Showdown Crown. As July dragged by, excitement grew for the finale of the summer series. One week out from the Showdown, we knocked the dust off our gear and the search commenced. Fishing primarily north of Palm Beach Inlet, we found kingfish ranging from 10 to 20lbs, but nothing that indicated a surefire starting point for Saturday. On our last day of pre-fishing off Hobe Sound, we were surprised to catch two kings over 20lbs and one pushing 40lbs – this was our spot. On our final gameday of the season, our work was cut out for us. SLOB City was in the lead with 57 points, with us and Native Son trailing with 55 and 53 points respectively. In August, anything can happen; we had been in this same position before and were confident in our abilities to make it happen. We handled our typical morning routine like clockwork before heading for inspection and checkout. Once outside of Hillsboro inlet, we paid respects to Troy and joined the rest of the fleet in prayer. In that moment, T-Roy’s presence on the boat felt as real as ever. Knowing he would be with us throughout the day gave us even more confidence and motivation to seize the moment. For one last time, Jamie gave the countdown over the radio, and
10

Zach pinned the throttles towards Hobe Sound. Light winds forced our hand into slow trolling to start the morning. As the minutes slowly ticked by without any action, a sense of nervousness filled the boat. After 2 hours and nothing to show for our efforts, we made a move to the south where we heard reports of a solid kingfish bite on the Jupiter Ledge. At 10:00AM, we had enough wind to get a kite spread out and were instantly in the midst of a kingfish feeding frenzy. After adding two teenage kings to the box and two others under 10lbs, we were out of the zone and began bringing in our spread to reset. As I flipped on the aft kite reel, the middle bait popped out of the clip and the fish headed offshore. We quickly got everything else in and started chasing. Five minutes later, the fish came circling up and was hoisted over the rail. This 43lb king was the biggest we had seen all week and we were lucky enough to catch her when it counted! Over our next few drifts, we made slight upgrades to our smaller kingfish in the box. Once the bite turned off up north, we tracked south in hopeful search of blue water and a second species. With no luck, we headed for Hillsboro and hoped that our catch would be enough to take it all. Our four kingfish tipped the scale at 91lbs. Rumors circulated throughout the dock as we anxiously waited to see what SLOB City and Native Son brought to the Sands. After both teams had weighed and many calculations were made on our phones, we began to feel the excitement. Once the results were official and we heard “Blue Moon” announced over the mic, we couldn’t believe it! Hours upon hours of hard work throughout the summer had finally culminated to the most prestigious victory in meat fishing. Winning the Showdown Crown for the third time amongst the best fisherman in South Florida was truly an indescribable feeling. Knowing that our boy T-Roy was watching down on us through it all made this victory much sweeter and far more special. Spring is coming once again and we are hopeful that we can duplicate the great success we had in 2019. Good luck to all teams fishing the Pompano Beach Saltwater Circuit in 2020! #ForTroy

Further, each registered and non-registered participant on behalf of other family members and/or executors agrees to release and hold harmless Bluewater Movements Inc, its officers, directors, owners, members, representatives, agents, employees, independent contractors, volunteers, promoters, advertisers, sponsors, partners, joint ventures, affiliates, assigns, polygraph examiner, the city and county where the events are held and all other persons connected directly or indirectly with the operation of any event in the Pompano Beach Saltwater Circuit (collectively, “Released and Indemnified Parties”) from any and all claims, losses, damages, demands, causes of action, suits and liabilities of every kind arising out of, related to, or resulting from the tournament, activity or event, including but not limited to all events in the Pompano Beach Saltwater Circuit, including without limitation, any claim for loss, damage or destruction of property, or injury (including death), regardless of whether such loss arises in whole or in part from the negligence of any Released and Indemnified Party. This release is intended to be as broad and inclusive as possible under applicable law, and if any portion of this release is held invalid or unenforceable, the balance shall continue in full force and legal effect. Jurisdiction over the tournament shall be exclusively that of the tournament director. All parties agree to be bound by the tournament director’s decisions without exception. 24. Signature: By registering for a tournament, the captain, owner or person responsible for the team’s registration acknowledges that all anglers and crew members on board the boat will abide by tournament rules.
COMPETITION RULES
25. Scoring: Each fish meeting weight requirements will be given a score of one point per pound. Mutilated fish will be disqualified. The decision of the weighmaster is final. In the event of a weight tie, the money will be evenly distributed among the two places. Ties are not broken by time. 26. Non-Pro Division: If any team member, mate or guest on a competing team’s boat has ever placed in the top 8 or higher in any PBSC event within the past 8 years of their competition, then that team shall not be eligible for the Non-Pro prize money categories. Top teams that have not participated in a PBSC tournament in recent years who reenter the series, will be evaluated backwards from the previous date that they fished a PBSC event. SKA Pro teams are not eligible for this category. The tournament committee reserves the right to exercise final discretion in determining any team’s eligibility for this category. Non-Pro teams are eligible for all other prize money in the tournament. 27. Team Division: Top teams will be determined based on the total points scored by the registered anglers of each boat. 28. Junior Angler Division: Eligible to kids 15 and under. The junior angler points may also contribute to the total number of boat points. However, the junior angler is not eligible for any other top angler prizes. 29. Pee-Wee Angler: Eligible to kids 10 and under. No restrictions on species size or type except Billfish & Sharks for pee-wee anglers. However, the pee-wee angler points will not contribute to the total boat points. Pee-Wee anglers are allowed assistance in fighting the fish. A maximum of 5 fish may be weighed in by a pee-wee. Kids within this age bracket may elect to compete exclusively as a junior angler if they choose, however, they must do so according to the rules set forth for junior anglers.

30. Family Division: In order to qualify for the Family Division there must be two or more immediate family members on the boat during the day of fishing. Ex: Husband, Wife, Parents, Children, Grandparents, Siblings (No In-Laws). Scoring for this category will be based solely on the amount of fish weighed by the immediate family members on board the boat. Points scored by non family members aboard the boat will not be factored into the scoring for this category. 31. Small Boat Division: This division will only be available to boats of 26 feet or less and a maximum of 400HP. Boat lengths must be reported at registration as stated by the boat manufacturer. The tournament committee reserves the right to review documentation of any boat to establish qualification for this category. Boats in this division are still eligible for all other prize categories in the tournaments.

Pick 3: Before the start of fishing, 3 of the 5 eligible species in the tournament will be drawn from a sealed container. The 3 species that are drawn must be caught on the day of the tournament in order to win the Pick 3 purse. If more than one team catches the Pick 3 trio, the winner will be determined by heaviest combined weight. If there is no winner, then the money will roll into the next PBSC tournament where a new Pick 3 drawing will take place and the purse will continue to grow until there is a winner. You must be registered for this category in order to be eligible for the prize money. 40. Winnings: By law, all winners must fill out a W9 form prior to receiving any payments. BLUE MOON WINS THE 2019 SALTWATER SHOOTOUT!
The competition was tight, and the bite was hot for the 21st Annual Mercury/ SeaVee Pompano Beach Saltwater Shootout. 113 boats and over 700 anglers turned out for the record setting tournament. The kickoff party was a blast with a live performance from Mr. Stix & the Spurience and DJ Select hosted the party inside while anglers won great prizes from tournament sponsors on the Spin-to-Win wheel, Blue Moon Fish Company delivered a decadent food experience and Hooter’s kept the free drinks flowing from tournament sponsors. The IGFA continued their mission to teach 100,000 kids to fish in 2019 with a classroom full of kids and hands on instruction that included a free fishing rod courtesy of Fish Florida Tag Agency plus a gift certificate for a fishing trip aboard Fish City Pride drift boat in Pompano Beach. Pre-fishing reports in advance of the Shootout had teams prepared for a hot day of fishing in the first leg of the PBSC summer series. Bryce Statham and his Blue Moon fishing team posted a great catch with 221.4 pounds of fish on board their Mercury powered 34’ SeaVee. They popped the champagne on stage in celebration of the first-place win and their $25,336 payday! Pierce Statham was also the top male angler with 127.6 points. Team Digger Rich was the only other team to break the two-hundred-pound threshold with four kings and four tuna that weighed in at 214.1 pounds to secure the second-place spot overall and a check for $10,840. Big fish have a reputation for big payouts in the PBSC tournaments and the 2019 Shootout was no exception. Angela Davis landed a 44.6-pound cobia with her teammates on team Reel Synergy. The cobia turned out to be the heaviest fish of the tournament and the second largest payout with a check for $20,598 to the team. As the fish continued to hit the scales on the Bass Pro Shops weigh stage, records were bound to be broken. That is exactly what happened when pee wee angler, Daniel Accardi of team Sir’ Reel, weighed his catch that included two huge African Pompano plus three bonito for a total of 115.3 pounds and a new pee wee record in the Shootout! The top junior angler title went to Benjamin Dixon of team Fish Scales with 62.2 pounds. In association with tournament charity, Perry J. Cohen Foundation, and Bass Pro Shops, Benjamin also won the safety-first award and received a complete safety kit including an epirb, handheld GPS and other life-saving boating equipment. Melanie Chojnacki, team High Gear, was the top female angler with 128.3 pounds. The top 5 in the Shootout were rounded out with Slob City in 3rd with 192.4 pounds, Young Guns in 4th with 190.7 pounds and High Gear in 5th with 187.2 pounds. CHIPS AHOY TOO WINS THE 2019 SALTWATER SLAM!
Rain or shine, nothing could slow down the 24th annual Saltwater Slam fleet. The 2019 Mercury/SeaVee Pompano Beach Saltwater Slam kicked off with a wide variety of fun activities and top-notch food hospitality from Blue Moon Fish Company and Hooter’s girls on site serving up free drinks for registered anglers. By the end of the kickoff party and final registration, 80 teams were signed up and ready to chase down the winning catch to claim their piece of the $175,000 cash purse! A forecast for scattered showers and thunderstorms kept teams on their toes all day, but they didn’t let it stop them from finding the fish. Captain Chip Sheehan and his Chips Ahoy Too/Tigress team came out on top with 142.9 pounds that included 4 kings, three tuna and an 18.0-pound Dolphin that was also the heaviest dolphin caught in the tournament. There were high fives and champagne showers all around on the Costa Del Mar weigh-in stage for the team when they realized they won their first tournament in the PBSC summer series and a check for $18,405! With 60 different cash prize categories in the Slam, there were plenty of other big winners as well! Team High Gear finished 9th overall, but they also managed to land a 34.6-pound kingfish that was the heaviest in its category and also the single heaviest fish of the tournament. With that king, they cleaned up in several different categories for a grand total of $18,103 in prize money. Crew member, Melanie Chojnacki was also the top female angler with 44 points. Captain Carl Torresson and his SLOB City team backed up their 3rd place finish at the first leg of the series with an even stronger finish at the Slam. They took 2nd place with 132 pounds and a check for $8,554. More importantly, they jumped into the series lead in pursuit of the championship rings and a Showdown Crown title sponsored by Simrad Electronics. Not to be overlooked, Blue Moon Fish Company, sat right behind them in 2nd overall and 5-time ring winners, Native Son, was hot on their heels in 3rd. The top 5 in the Slam were rounded out with Doing it All/Hardway in 3rd place with 131.9 pounds, Reel Synergy in 4th with 128.5 pounds and Native Son in 5th with 128.4 pounds. Doing it All/Hardway received a round of applause from the crowd at the awards ceremony when they donated $1,000 of their tournament winnings back to the tournament beneficiary, the Perry J. Cohen Foundation. Team Runnin’ Game had a stand out performance of their own at the Slam. In addition to a 10th place finish, they won the non-pro division and posted the second heaviest fish of the tournament to win a grand total of $9,594. In the species division, Sarah Marie had the heaviest tuna at 29.7 pounds. Money Pitt weighed the heaviest wahoo at 15.4 pounds and Ice Box had the heaviest cobia at 13.9 pounds. All three of those fish were worth a bonus $1,000 to each team. Cameron Camden, from team Bionic Bait, was the top pee-wee angler with 75.2 points and Brian Miller, team Reel Line, was the top junior with 61.9 points.

sALTWATER sHOWDOWN…A 2019 rECAP
YOUNG GUNS & BLUE MOON WIN AT THE 21ST ANNUAL SALTWATER SHOWDOWN
The 2019 Mercury/SeaVee Pompano Beach Saltwater Showdown was a memorable tournament with a total of 83 boats fishing and the battle for the crown was a tough fight to the end. Highly anticipated grand prize giveaways were the highlight of the kickoff party with teams who signed up for all three legs eligible to win big! Some of the nights big winners were teams such as, Slob City who won a $4,000 certificate for a Loadmaster Custom Trailer, team Reel Line won a luxury vacation package to Resorts World Bimini, team Miss Michelle won a $500 Bass Pro Shopping Spree, and team Salty Dawgs won a 3-year RAM truck lease from Joey Accardi! Summer thunderstorms stayed west all afternoon, making for ideal conditions and a packed weigh-in. The bite might have been slow, but the competition was tight. As teams arrived at Sands Harbor Marina for the weigh-in, the adrenaline was high for what would be the final weigh-in of the summer. Pompano fishing veterans, Captain Lance Irvine and his Mercury Marine sponsored team Young Guns took the top spot in the Showdown with 4 kings totaling 110.3 lbs. and a check for $11,150!! In a close 2nd was Captain Chip Sheehan and his Chips Ahoy Too team with a total weight of 107.8 lbs. earning them a hefty paycheck for $15,242 for finishing 4th overall in the series. The 3rd place spot in the Showdown went to Captain Ryan Davis and his team Reel Synergy who weighed in the top two Dolphin and four kings for a total weight of 95.9 lbs. and $7,053 in winnings. Reel Synergy added a bonus $2,500 from the grand prize drawings at the kickoff party also! Heading into the final leg, the top 3 contenders for the Simrad Electronics sponsored Showdown Crown title were Slob City, Blue Moon and Native Son. With 7 titles represented between Native Son and Blue Moon, Captain Carl Torresson knew that despite a small lead they would have to bring their “A-game” to win it all. When the salt spray settled, a strong 4th place finish by Blue Moon was enough to secure their 3rd Showdown Crown championship! Native Son finished 5th in the Showdown and bumped themselves into 2nd place overall in the series, followed by Slob City in 3rd. Team Blue Moon also had the heaviest fish of the Showdown, a 43 lb. king that helped to catapult the team to a $25,090 payday! Other noteworthy Showdown performances included Runnin’ Game winning the Non-Pro Division with 69.4 points. Reel E Sea was the top small boat with 58.4 points and also claimed the top small boat of the series title with a series total of 254.4 points. The Top Family was the father/son fishing duo, Joe Lacalamita Sr and Jr on Double Diamond with a total of 70.8 lbs. The Top Male Angler was Doug Perez from the winning team, Young Guns with 61.5 points and the Top Female Angler was Katrina Langdon from Kat’s Rival with 51.1 points. The youngsters showed up at the Showdown with some serious fish too! Sponsored by Bass Pro Shops, the Top Junior Angler and Safety-First award went to Jonah Bennett from team Loan Shark with 28 points and Parker Steel from Native Son conquered the Pee-Wee division with 68.4 points. Two massive jackpots, the Pick 3 and the KDW, rolled over from the 2019 Showdown. The Pick 3 jackpot ended the season with a rollover jackpot worth $67,860 and the KDW jackpot was also sitting at $41,760 with both expected to reach a collective $130,000 payout at the 2020 Shootout on May 16th. Add that to all of the other amazing prize categories, top-notch hospitality, and you’ve got a record tournament on the horizon! The Saltwater Slam will be celebrating its 25th anniversary in 2020 as well, so stay tuned for some exciting updates. Many thanks to all of the teams and sponsors that make this premier series possible!
