Is a fish in the hand better than two in the lake? Obviously, a play on the old adage about a bird in the hand is better than two in the bush. Well, this story is kinda similar, but not really.

It was summertime in Arkansas and Ben and I had gotten up early, before daylight, quiet as church mice. We turned on the coffee pot so Mom and Dad could wake up, shuffle over to the kitchen, pour a cup, and ease into their day. We had figured out long before then that if we set the coffee, maybe even do a little breakfast prep work, and were quiet… we could basically do anything we wanted to do. Mom’s rules were “be quiet and DON’T GET HURT.” We managed to accomplish some of that, some of the time, but rarely at the same time!

But we set the coffee and snuck quietly out the door to hunt worms. We had our fishing poles ready to go. We just needed the bait. My great-grandfather put rubber mats down in the driveway, for traction when it rained, because the cabin was up a hill. Under the rubber mats were where the worms lived, hundreds of them. So, we got our empty coffee can we used specifically for this purpose, our flashlight, and a shovel, and we went after ‘em.

With “Big Daddy King Worm” (we always made-up names for our bait…) and a dozen of his friends in the can, we headed down the path. “The Path,” as we called it, was a cut through down to “The Point.” It cut 1/4 mile off the walk, down to the lake, so us kids always took “the path.” Down the path, down the road, down the hill, and to the lake.

This morning was foggy, just a little cool, and glorious if you were young brothers roaming around without their parents!

With worms on hooks, we cast our lines, and we were fishing! And they were biting! We caught fish all morning.

The morning was fully established, and it was starting to get warm, probably around 10:30 or 11:00, and I caught a little catfish that proved to be a lasting memory even 40 years later.

I set the hook and I guess I pissed him off. He was MAD! I got him up and out of the water and was attempting to get the hook removed. I swear I saw his eye squint as he thrust his fin right into the meaty part of my left hand just below my left thumb, AND IT STUCK! Not sure if my readers know this or not, but catfish have barbs on their pectoral fins along with a form of toxin as a self-defense mechanism.

Well, this little guy defended himself, he was stuck in my hand…like so deep that I couldn’t pull him out! The poison was pumping in my veins now. We tried to get him out, but it hurt so bad that all we could do was start back up the hill headed home. It was hot, I was sweating from the heat, the climb, and the poison… hurling several times on the way, all the while holding this fish in both hands so he wouldn’t flip flop and drive the barb further in. Not an easy task I might add.

One of our neighbors up there was a big, burly, bearded man named Hugh Irby. Great guy, very quiet…but maybe because his wife, Lois, was a big, loud, boisterous fun-loving woman.

(I was in love with their granddaughter but that’s a different story.)

Anyway, we make it to Hugh and Lois’ house and Ben runs and gets Hugh to tend to my injury. Of course, he’d seen much worse during the war, but to me this was a pretty big deal.

He just looked at it, smirked a little, grabbed a pair of cutters, and cut the fin off the fish. He threw the fish into the bushes for the raccoons and then walked me into his garage so he could perform the surgery.

It was there that he produced a small scalpel, burned it, cleaned it with alcohol, and slit my hand open where this barb was lodged. He wiggled it out and the relief was instant!

I didn’t even care about the bloody shirt…I should have, but I didn’t at the time.

He bandaged me up and Ben and I went back to the cabin, so I could rest for a bit before our next adventure. When Mom saw my shirt, she freaked out!!!

“OH MY GOD! WHAT HAPPENED???” was her immediate reply. Of course, if we said that I got hurt fishing, that would be the end of that for a while… so we just said, “oh it’s just a scratch that bled a little more than I thought, but it’s ok, Lois put a band-aid on it, I’m fine.”

Little did she know that I walked half a mile uphill, vomiting most of the way, with a catfish stuck in my hand… If you’re reading this, sorry Mom! Get outside, have an adventure, have fun, and by all means, learn how to grab a catfish!

Life can stab you when you least expect it and a catfish in the hand isn’t better than two in the lake!

Susan Charlton Susan came to HMC by way of a temporary agency for Accounts Payable. She worked through the agency from September 28, 2020 through February 5, 2021. She then was hired by HMC on February 8th (which happened to be her son’s 23rd birthday).

She chose HMC because it “feels like family and everyone is so nice.”

Omar Martinez Omar started at HMC through a temporary agency in 2008 and was eventually hired. His first position was as an order puller. He then moved onto receiving, processing UPS, Watts Drainage, Will Call, and then became night shift supervisor.

Now, having been with HMC for 14 years, he works as Floor Supervisor/ Processing Supervisor.

He says, “I love working for HMC because they see us as family and not just as employees.”

His goal is to be part of Inside Sales one day.

Kenitha Brown Kenitha was also hired through a temporary agency in November of 1999. Soon after, she was hired in March 2000.

A huge asset to HMC, she has held several positions: Customer Service Support, RGA/Credits, Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable, and Payroll/HR. “Growth, opportunity, and family atmosphere” are what she appreciates most about HMC.

Efficiency requires that the work of the group has been subdivided into meaningful parts or activities, that time and effort have been allocated to activities appropriately, and that those who are responsible for fulfilling such activities are the ones best suited for each job. It wouldn’t be constructive for all of the worker bees to morph into a single type of bee that could perform only one job.

Self-discovery about work preferences, and selecting and matching people to jobs, is really about understanding and acknowledging that individuals have different thresholds for particular tasks. These thresholds may reflect differences in preferences, capabilities, or both.

People will accomplish more, and better work, if a set of activities are aligned well with individuals’ strengths and weaknesses, preferences, and tolerances.

When hiring, then, it is important to know not only the skills and competencies of the new recruit but the abilities of other individuals in the current workforce in order to decide if and how a new employee will fit into the mix.

In essence, it’s a matter of making the proper placements of a highly specialized group. The situational fit of talent is critical to performance.

It is a wonderful feeling when a team “clicks.” Every manager knows the satisfaction of having the right people with the right complement of skills and temperaments that contribute to the team’s success. Take the time to get to know what your people are capable of doing, which skill gaps exist across people, and who in the immediate organization may be instrumental to others’ development.

On March 16, 2020, the White House formally released “The President’s Coronavirus Guidelines for America – 15 Days to Slow the Spread.” Here we are at day 365 + and I think we are finally seeing some light at the end of the tunnel my friends.

The last time I was asked to write an article for our beloved BusyBee News it was February 2020 and I wrote about being consistent in setting achievable goals in lieu of the typical fad “new year, new me” approach that many take on January 1st of the new year. Just like all of you, I had no inkling of the impending mess that was only a mere two weeks away from putting our country at a standstill. I did not know at the time that everything we knew about how we ran and operated our business was about to be turned upside-down and inside-out.

I did not know that we would be celebrating our son’s 2nd birthday on a family Zoom video chat like some sort of dystopian future sci-fi movie. I did not know that this would be anything more than a three week “blip” on the calendar of 2020. I look back on the e-mail I wrote to my Houston sales team back then advising that we needed to lock down and work from home for ‘just three weeks’ because our regular customers were no longer letting us in the doors for routine visits. I remember when I wrote that a year ago thinking how long of an eternity three weeks sounded like to not be doing our job normally. Now I can only laugh at my optimism back then as we all know that it has been a lot longer than three weeks and we are still dealing with this invisible thing that we cannot seem to shake.

GETTING PRETTY TIRED

OF LIVING THROUGH HISTORICAL EVENTS

Regardless of if you have or have not been diagnosed with COVID in the last year, it has impacted all of us in a major kind of way. We saw a time where kids could not go to school, couples could not have weddings, families could not grieve at funerals, and suddenly many of us became familiar with the term “essential worker.” Amid all the madness, I am so proud of how quickly our agency moved to implement remote working protocols, health/safety measures at the office, and managed to weather the pandemic storm to keep supplying the critical components of the plumbing, HVAC, fire, irrigation, and waterworks industries that are necessary to protect the health of our nation’s infrastructure. We should all be so proud that we were able to move mountains to take care of our customers, and their customers, all while trying to work in ways that we had never worked before.

So, we got 2020 out of the way and started 2021 fresh, right? Remember what I mentioned earlier? “New year, new me!” Apparently, the world was not ready to cut us a break quite yet and threw our company through an international ransomware attack and a once-in-a-century freeze with mass power outages. Not to mention, the widespread manufacturer product shortages and price increases like we have never seen, as well as the “little” entire organization ERP software conversion to SAP B1…just to keep us all on our toes. We got to deal with all of those things in the first calendar quarter of the new year. WHEW! You know what? We not only survived, but THRIVED through all of them, and we did it together. I can tell you all confidently that we could not have done it if we did not stick to our companies’ core values and beliefs. I can tell you that if we didn’t have the best people in the business working overtime to take care of the industry, we would have never made it.

So, please remember, if we can get through the last twelve months together, we can do anything together. As far as this author is concerned, there is no better group of people to handle whatever future curveballs the world might throw at us. I am so proud to be a part of this HMC family and so proud to be surrounded by some incredible folks that have gone above and beyond to do whatever it takes to make it happen. Thank you for being a part of the HMC family and never forget that “the Priceless Ingredient of every product in the marketplace is the Honor and Integrity of him who sells it.”

by adam merritt Today’s issue guest stars Elbert McKinley, an engineer who retired from Watts, and continues to contribute as a consultant. A Watts LFF118R was recently installed at a pump station in Burkeville, Texas to replace a unit that was decades old. This particular ACV functions as a check valve, that opens slowly when the pump turns on (to avoid water hammer) and when the pump turns off, it closes quickly to avoid damage from back pressure.

To their credit, the installers followed all the instructions, and made sure the install matched all the diagrams in the manual. They were understandably frustrated when none of the adjustments they made allowed the valve to open at all.

It took Jim Fouts’ keen eye to spot that the valve was not oriented in the proper direction, even though the directional arrow was installed pointing downstream. The case was closed when, after a quick consultation with Elbert, it was determined that the valve needed to be turned around. Victory, however, was short lived. It turns out that the valve still wasn’t opening and closing the way it was designed to. Elbert made the road trip to Burkeville, where he realized that there was yet another component installed incorrectly. The pilot valve, the smaller valve on the outside of the larger valve, controls how quickly the main valve opens. It too was installed in the opposite orientation.

The moral of this story is that sometimes - rarely- we are going to encounter true manufacturing defects and it’s up to us to ask a lot of silly sounding questions up to and including, “What if someone put the arrow sticker on backwards?”

Lab Safety Systems is a highly customizable system with which laboratory supervisors and science instructors can ensure the safety of everyone in their labs. With Lab Safety Systems, a science teacher can control exhaust fans, electric power to specific outlets, water to the faucets, and natural gas to the turrets.

It takes a special blend of trades to install a system which integrates plumbing and wiring like this.

You might have noticed the big red emergency stop buttons, by the gas pump, when you fill up your tank. In an emergency, this system has that same big red emergency stop button that will deactivate all the utilities and turn the exhaust fan on full blast.

There are options to operate the system automatically through a BAS, manually with or without keys, or semi-manually with timers and switches. Each new install is different from the last.

A product like this requires careful cooperation between the engineer who designed the plans, our insides sales teams that make sure every specified option is selected and bid appropriately, and the manufacturer to ensure the finished product performs as designed. When FST is called upon to be present for a startup, we have to be prepared to explain the operation of the entire system (on video) for an owner’s training, and to help the installing contractor troubleshoot and literally chase down loose ends.

It feels like only yesterday that Watts acquired the assets of Backflow Direct.

It was back in the before times, Q3 of 2019, that Team10, FireWaterGroup, and FST were introduced to this radical new design for a backflow preventer. Instead of the traditional hinged check valves found in the timeless Watts 957, the new deringer valve features checks that slide back along a set of rails then rotate in order to allow the flow of water to pass.

This allows for a more compact install and results in less pressure drop across the valve than more conventional designs.

The learning curve for FST has been steep.

We’ve learned, and taught contractors, how to properly diagnose, disassemble, and reassemble these new valves. Now thanks to the once-in-a-lifetime winter stormpocalypse (hopefully) of February 2021, we know what these valves look like when they’ve frozen solid. In the case of the Deringer 40 and Deringer 50 series, the versions with relief valves, incoming water is diverted to the bottom of the relief valve diaphragm where the incoming pressure keeps the relief valve closed.

As the temperature dropped and stayed below freezing, that thin pool of water was the first to freeze solid. Turning from liquid to solid, and expanding against an already closed valve, it sliced open the rubber diaphragm leaving a cut in the shape of a crescent.

BATMAN RETURNS: PROOF THAT SOME FLOPS GET BETTER WITH TIME Who would have thought that a Batman movie, that centers on a monstrous reinvention of one of his oldest foes, would have been one of the most fondly remembered films of the 90’s? Following up on the success of 1989’s Batman wasn’t going to be an easy feat; Batman ’89, which starred Jack Nicholson and Michael Keaton, broke box office records, wowed audiences consisting of adults and children alike, and set the standard for superhero films at the time. Critics commended director Tim Burton on taking a dark, gritty, urban tone for his interpretation of the beloved comic book hero, who before had been portrayed in a campy yet equally iconic light in 1966 by the late Adam West. Michael Keaton was no one’s first choice to play Batman at the time; he had been known for doing comedies throughout the 80’s (Mr. Mom and Johnny Dangerously w/then SNL’s Joe Piscopo come to mind). It also didn’t help that Keaton wasn’t of the same physical build as Batman who was often portrayed as having that of an Olympically trained athlete who knew a variety of martial arts skills.

But Burton got his way. He had Michael Keaton portray Bruce Wayne as a reclusive average Joe instead of a handsome billionaire and replaced the standard black and gray Batsuit with a full black armored suit. Burton’s focus was on Keaton’s eyes the whole time.

His Gotham City wasn’t filmed in Chicago like The Dark Knight Trilogy that succeeded it. He had a set designed that depicted buildings built upon other buildings as if hell erupted from the pavement below. Even Warner Bros. had some great ideas; have Jack Nicholson play himself as the Joker (it’s my bias, some people share it, but hey he’s great in the role), have Prince do the soundtrack (set the stage for U2, Seal, and The Smashing Pumpkins to contribute to Schumacher’s films), and throw in some other who’s who actors such as Robert Wuhl, the late Jack Palance, and Billy Dee Williams as Harvey Dent (the Two-Face we never got to know). Batman 89 was a success, a success that no one thought that its 1992 sequel Batman Returns could overshadow.

When Batman Returns was released in 1992 it was a box office success, but it didn’t make as much money as Batman ’89. Tim Burton opted to go for a darker, more gothic feel than its more noir-ish predecessor. The story itself focused on Danny DeVito’s gruesome yet iconic portrayal as Oswald Cobblepot aka The Penguin, but he’s a far cry from the dapper, pompous criminal mastermind everyone knew from the comics and Burgess Meredith’s portrayal from the 60’s show. Here he is a deformed, beyond unkempt, sewer dwelling monster with webbed hands resembling flippers, a mouth dribbling with black ooze, and a grudge against Gotham City because his parents abandoned him when he was a child. He expresses a desire to resurface, reconcile with his parents, and blackmails Gotham elite Max Shrek, played

by Christopher Walken, to help him.

But Max Shrek, arguably the true villain of the movie, has plans of his own. Trying to gain a monopoly on Gotham’s power supply, he shines the Penguin in a bright light (he stages a kidnapping of the current Mayor’s baby and the Penguin rescues him) and convinces him to run for Mayor, unaware that the Penguin has a sinister plot of his own involving Gotham’s first born sons. Batman (who is criminally underutilized in this film) isn’t convinced that the Penguin is who he claims he is and investigates while battling the Red Triangle Circus gang and the mysterious Catwoman. Michelle Pfeiffer’s portrayal of Selina Kyle, the hapless, downtrodden secretary of Max Shrek, turned sensual yet lethal Catwoman, is probably the most memorable part of this movie. She sells a convincing romance between herself and Bruce Wayne, is deliciously evil when plotting to kill Batman with the Penguin, and her transition from a lonely secretary to vindictive vigilante is, in my opinion, a WTF moment that even a raunchy modern comedy can’t top.

All in all, this film was slammed by parents’ groups when it premiered, critics were mixed upon viewing the movie (most leaned towards the positive), and it took the neon lit, rubber nipple laden Schumacher films Batman Forever and Batman and Robin to have teenagers talk about how great Batman Returns was in retrospect. It’s my belief that flops get better with time and it stemmed with this movie. It was a catalyst for Batman to return to his darker roots when The Dark Knight Trilogy kicked off with Batman Begins, with Christian Bale as the dark knight, in 2005. Nolan’s works, followed by Ben Affleck’s run in the DCEU, and Robert Pattinson’s upcoming go at the role in this year’s The Batman is dark done right. Batman Returns is a great film yet it is also a misstep in portraying the dark world that Batman inhabits. I would definitely recommend it for weekend viewing, especially if you have kids that have frequent nightmares.

Literally, I haven’t had a nightmare since I saw this movie; everyone my age wanted to be Batman and, even if we won’t admit it outright, still do.

Miguel Tovar

Lighting Speed! I contacted Miguel Tovar late in the day about an order that needed to be changed from standard ground to UPS Red as we had a customer without hot water.
