Military youth are like their peers in many ways, but the unique challenges they face play a critical role in shaping their lives. Extended separations from their parents or guardians, saying forever goodbyes to friends and the looming uncertainty of what the future will bring can test the resiliency of military youth.

However, these challenges can encourage growth and strength of character that impacts not only them, but those around them.

The Boys & Girls Club of America seeks to celebrate these and other inspiring characteristics as part of the Youth of the Year program. Being recognized as the Youth of the Year is the BGCA’s highest honor for it’s members and requires a thorough application process which highlights the youth’s leadership, service, academics, and dedication to living a healthy lifestyle.

JBSA youth who participate in military BGCA-Affiliated Youth Programs are eligible to apply for Youth of the Year based on the following guidelines:

• Candidates must be no younger than 14 and no older than 18 years of age as of January 31, 2024

• Must have active and continuing membership in a Boys & Girls Club or affiliated YP for at least two years prior to January 31, 2024

Mario Marroquin, 502d Force Support Squadron child and youth program assistant, hosts in-person workshops at Fort Sam Houston Youth Programs or via zoom for other JBSA candidates to prepare their applications or practice speeches and interviews.

As a Youth of the Year program advisor, Marroquin provides applicants with feedback on how to complete a professional and well-assembled package.

The application consists of the following:

• Nomination form

• Resume and cover letter

• Four prompted essays

• Club/Youth Program and community recommendation letters

• Verification of identification form

• Candidate photo

• Speech and interview

• Additional forms signed by parents, candidates and Youth Center professionals

For more information about the 2024 Military Youth of the Year Application, visit the Youth of the Year portal at NYOY.org or contact your local JBSA Youth Program Office.
