VETERANS’ APPRECIATION DAY

The Fitness Center is hosting an open house for veterans in recognition of all those who have served this great country and in appreciation for all their sacrifices. INDOOR MARATHON

This is a self-monitored program based on the honor system. Participants are to try to complete 26.2 miles running/walking within one week. Participants may pick up their cards to record their mileage at the front desk.

HOLIDAY 10-MILE BIKE RIDE

All bikers are invited to Heritage Park to cycle those holiday calories away. Challenge yourself to stay in shape while completing the 10-mile course.

The Rambler Fitness Center will give free promotional items to all participants while supplies last.

Lifeguard Recertification

Dec. 18 • 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. • Cost is $50 per person

This is an opportunity for current Red Cross Certified Lifeguards to renew their certifications. Participants must be able to pass the pre and written test and demonstrate the ability to correctly perform all the rescues, CPR, and First Aid tasks taught in the Lifeguard class.

Water Safety Instructor Class

Dec. 19-23 • 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. • Cost is $180 per person

This class is for people who want to learn how to teach swimming lessons. This Red Cross class is one of the required certifications to be hired as a GS-3 WSI next summer. Participants must be able to swim 25 yards of freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke, sidestroke, elementary backstroke and 20 yards of butterfly at the Level 4 to get in the class. Participants must be at least 16 years old. Lifeguard Certification is not required for the class.

Lifeguard Certification Class

Dec. 27-30 • 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. • Cost is $180 per person

This class is for people interested in being certified as a Lifeguard. This Red Cross class is required for employment as a GS-2 Lifeguard next summer. Participants will be trained in Water Rescues, CPR, AED and First Aid. Successful completion will earn you a two-year certification as a lifeguard. You must be able to swim 300 yards without stopping, tread water for two minutes without using your hands and complete a timed event where you swim 20 yards, retrieve a 10 pound object off of the bottom and return to the start line swimming on your back with the weight on your chest and both hands on the weight. You must be at least 15 years old.

The JBSA-Fort Sam Houston Golf Club is one of only six golf courses in the entire United States to offer this program. This program is designed to introduce golf to new players and is a fun, non-intimidating program which runs once a week for four weeks. The cost for this outstanding program is only $169 and it includes four 90-minute lessons and on-course play with the instructor and fellow classmates. GATEWAY CUP CHAMPIONSHIP

This tournament is a two-day individual stroke play championship. Entry fee for the event is $30 and covers prizes and lunch on the second day of competition. This is a triple points event and open to anyone. To be eligible for end of year prize payouts, players must have played in at least four events throughout the year. Summer may be over but those of us lucky enough to be a part of the JBSA community have access to one of the state’s best lakes all year around. The JBSA-Recreation Park at Canyon Lake is located right here in our own backyard, just a short drive north of San Antonio. The JBSA Recreation Park at Canyon Lake has everything you need for that fun family get away for a day, weekend or an entire week!

The park has a host of lodging options with new and updated facilities. There are new bungalows and bunkhouses already on site and more expected soon. In addition, new fiber optics are being installed to give you better and longer range WiFi within the park. No matter the size of your group, we have your lodging needs covered. Email is the preferred method of requesting reservations for now, but a new online reservation system is on the way so keep an eye out for that update. The improvements don’t stop with lodging. We added 20 tons of sand to increase the park’s beach area by 40%. The children’s playground area has been fitted with new equipment and state of the art ground coverage to ensure a safe kid-friendly play area. If you’re looking to learn a new skill while you’re on your vacation, the staff at the park can help you with that too. They offer dutch-oven cooking classes, boating classes, paddle boarding and kayaking classes. You can also relax and enjoy the beautiful night sky during the star gazing event or take an enjoyable boat tour of the lake.

RIDING LESSONS

The Equestrian Center offers horseback riding lessons for all levels of riders in both Englishand Western-style. Horses, saddles and tack for lessons will be provided if needed. Patrons must be at least seven years old. The price is $60 per hour for a private lesson, $50 for semi-private and $40 for group lessons. Lessons are available most days of the week and in the evenings. Helmets are available if you do not have your own.

License to Carry a Handgun classes are held at the Camp Bullis Rod-N-Gun Recreation Center (RNGRC). Students must be 21 years old to register for the class unless they are activeduty military. You need to be familiar with your firearm; no first time shooters. Students must also meet federal qualifications to purchase a handgun.

The cost of the class is $80. Successful completion of this class is recommended before purchasing a handgun. WALKING/RUNNING TRAILS

JBSA Lackland has 100+ acres of walking and running trails that run from Outdoor Recreation to the Gillum Fitness Center and all the way to Stillman Park. Bring the family to enjoy the outdoors on a nature walk with plenty of bird species, wildflowers, Leon Creek (catch and release fishing), turtles and many other types of wildlife. You are welcome to bring your dogs, but please remember to keep them on a leash.

Purchase a Joint Base San Antonio Recreation Park at Canyon Lake annual pass for $100. Buy one and enjoy the lake all year. ARCHERY TURKEY SHOOT

Nov. 21-23 • 10 a.m. to noon

This event includes two days of instruction and a field trip to Camp Bullis for 3-D target shooting. Parents, friends and other spectators can cheer on archers during the competition. The cost for this three-day camp is $60 per person and all archery equipment will be provided during the camp. However, participants need to bring a sack lunch and water bottle each day of camp.
