Taking the stress out of travel

Any day can be a good day to break from the norm – to head out on a new adventure to refresh the mind, body and spirit.

One of the last leisure travel offices in the Air Force is located at JBSA-Lackland where travel professionals are primed and ready to help the Department of Defense community book the perfect escape.

“We are a full-service travel agency offering a wide range of services to include air and hotel rates, vacation packages, fully guided and escorted vacations, and cruises,” said Crystal Reyes, 502d Force Support Squadron leisure travel specialist. “Our trips offer wonderful relaxation opportunities to get away and relax during the holidays, post-deployment, pre-deployment or any time you simply just need a break.”

Reyes and her JBSA leisure travel team members, Enriqueta Wetzel and Jeanette Quintanilla, have specialized training and over 50 years of combined experience. They can take over the most stressful parts of vacation planning for their customers while helping them stay within their budgets. All military members and DoD civilians, as well as their family and friends, can take advantage of their expertise.

“We do appreciate if customers can come in with a general plan or at least an idea of what they wish to do,” said Reyes. “Having travel dates and a few location options is a good start. Most of our customers’ travel plans requires research and planning except for those that just need airline or hotel accommodations.”

Air or hotel only reservations can be quoted for customers on a walk-in basis. Clients may even receive vacation quotes on the spot if they visit the office with a specific trip in mind.

The agents do their best to keep community members informed throughout the year by offering travel expos, Disney planning workshops, virtual Travel Talks and more. Event dates are shared on their Facebook page, Joint Base San Antonio Information Tickets and Travel. Customers can also follow the page to stay up to date on all the latest travel deals, offerings and ticket prices from the JBSA Information, Tickets and Travel offices.

“Our agents take great pride in providing some of the absolute best customer service in all of Air Force Services,” said Crystal. “Our repeat clientele are clear proof that we do amazing things.”

The summer and the last months of the year are some of the most popular times for travel, so why not reach out to the JBSA Leisure Travel Office and let them get started on the planning for you.

Dreaming...

of lake days

JBSA Recreation Park at Canyon Lake

When someone thinks of spring break, two kinds of trips might come to mind. Maybe the perfect week-long getaway that centers around a quiet day in the shade, the sounds of nature floating on the soft breeze and a cool drink that hits the spot. Or maybe it’s a weekend filled with sounds of laughter that can lift the soul and sunshine glinting off water as blue as the sky. Days that feel like they should last a lifetime.

The Joint Base San Antonio Recreation Park at Canyon Lake can make both dreamy vacations a reality for DoD ID cardholders. This leisure destination encompasses approximately 400 acres. The property includes three beaches, a rental marina, a wet-storage marina, a general store, five different types of lodging options, and numerous tent and recreational vehicle campsites to fit a variety of party sizes and needs.

Located approximately one hour northeast of JBSA Lackland, Fort Sam Houston and Randolph, the recreation site can be visited by day guests or overnight guests with reservations. Reservations can also be made for watercraft rentals and special events such as Star Gazing and Dutch Oven Classes.

RELAX

Once patrons check in, the possibilities for fun and relaxation are endless. Guests looking for adventures at any level can find something enjoyable during their visit. Perhaps it’s turning the pages of a good book while lounging under the trees, taking a boat out to catch that monster of a fish, or going for an early morning jog through the sand and catching sight of local deer eating their breakfast. Competitive spirits can also take advantage of the sand volleyball court or soccer field to remind their party of who’s got the best game.

Taking a break from activities, visitors can settle in at picnic tables for a simple barbecue using one of the available grills, roast a marshmallow, or relax in their air-conditioned lodging with a meal prepared in a full kitchen.

The staff continually strives to provide the best amenities they can for the local DoD community. In 2022, new bungalows, bunk houses and ski boats were added to the inventory. In 2023, they are getting four more fish/ski boats and five pontoon boats. Additionally, visitors can expect to see more cottages and possibly yurts along with updated roads and a renewed country store.

Winter weather is fading, so why not kick start spring with a visit to the JBSA Recreation Center at Canyon Lake. A new, dreamy adventure is waiting for you!

Eligibility:

Active-duty military, retirees and DoD civilian ID cardholders can have up to nine guests accompany them during their stay. Veterans with a Veteran Health Identification Card indicating “service connected” can have up to four guests accompany them after completing a vetting process at one of the JBSA visitor centers.
