Good leaders value employee feedback

W

e’ve learned through the pandemic that listening to employees is even more important in a time of great stress than in normal times.

If you think you have a great workplace, or aspire to be a great workplace, then assessing how you are doing during a challenge is going to be more insightful than when things are going fine.

So when is the best time to solicit employee feedback?

Company leaders should ask themselves — and their leadership team — two questions: 1. Do you care what your employees think?

2. Does it matter what your employees think?

The first is a heart question, and the second is a head question. How leaders answer these two critical questions will determine if and when to ask em-

ployees for feedback. Don’t do it if the leadership team isn’t ready to take on that feedback.

Negative feedback is part of the human condition. Some entrenched negative folks are going to provide that feedback.

They’re going to see any challenge as an opportunity to turn up the volume.

Leaders need to parse through the employee feedback, particularly around unstructured comment feedback. Pick from that what is constructive negative feedback.

Also, choose inspiring positive or constructive positive feedback. Then use it to make informed people decisions that factor into strategy. The negative feedback is always going to be there. Choose whether you ignore it or look at it in the proper context.

How do you communicate around the feedback you receive?

First, it is important to share the context. Share the areas

where your organization scores highest and also share where you have the greatest opportunities and challenges.

Second, it’s really good practice to pick a representative positive comment (or two) that channel the positive energy in the organization and then share it verbatim. Offer one action you’re going to take as a result of that feedback. Choose an action that has companywide benefits.

Here are some examples of mission-critical insights you can gain from employee feedback: • Uncovering technology challenges is an example of a relevant insight you can gain through employee feedback.

Often, employees on the front line know where there are struggles, but the information doesn’t get up through normal channels. An employee survey uncovers things like this right away.

• In a time of great challenge, pressures on new managers are

significant. Often, they don’t want to share that they’re struggling, but the people on the team are aware of it. An employee survey will bring it to light.

• Veteran managers who work well in less-stressful times can crumble under the weight of pressure. Use a survey so management can take action before it turns into a truly difficult problem. Employee feedback gives you that early warning.

Leaders should realize they will always get negative feedback. And in a time of great challenge, they will probably get more of it. But they also are likely to receive some really inspiring positive feedback.

People will step up to great challenges as a team.

Employee survey determines The Denver Post’s Top Workplaces

s employers take extraordinary steps to meet the needs of workers and customers during the pandemic, the Colorado Top Workplaces awards are recognizing those efforts.

Survey feedback from employees is the sole basis for determining the Top Workplaces.

And that feedback serves as the ultimate test of how employers are responding in the age of COVID. “In times of great change, it is more important than ever to maintain a connection among employees,” said Eric Rubino, Energage CEO. “If COVID taught us anything, it’s that asking questions and listening to employees is critical to navigating this new world of work. More than ever, you need

to be more intentional about your culture.”

This marks the 10th year The Denver Post has partnered with Philadelphia-based Energage to rank the Top Workplaces in Colorado. The foundation of the program is a scientific survey of employees who rate their workplace culture. The feedback also gives companies insights about what makes them unique.

Surveying began in October, when The Post started running news articles and promotions to welcome nominations for Top Workplaces consideration. In all, 2,448 employers in the region were invited to have their employees take the survey. Any organization was eligible to participate, provided it had at least 50 employees in the state. Employers could be public, private, nonprofit or governmental.

There is no cost to enter the Top Workplaces program.

Combined, the companies surveyed for the 2021 program employed 81,802 people in Colorado. Of employees who received questionnaires, 48,214 responded, either on paper or online. For 2021, 150 employers earned recognition as Top Workplaces.

The employee engagement survey of 24 questions gathers responses regarding issues relating to workplace culture: • Alignment — where the company is headed, its values, cooperation, effective meetings • Coaching — managers care about concerns, are helpful, encourage employee development • Connection — employees feel appreciated, work is meaningful, working at full potential, feel informed • Engagement — productivity, retention, recruiting • Leadership — confidence in company leaders • Performance — execution,

open-mindedness, innovation, clued-in leadership • The Basics — pay, benefits, work/life flexibility, training, expectations Employers that score high enough are recognized as Top Workplaces. Employers are ranked within size groups to accurately compare results. Energage also determines special award winners based on standout scores on specific survey topics.

Wonder why a particular company was not on the list? Perhaps it chose not to participate, or it did not score well enough in the survey. Energage sometimes disqualifies employers based on questionable results detected through statistical tests it runs to ensure organizations are accurately administering the survey.

New employers on list strive to make a difference

The Denver Post’s annual Top Workplaces survey of 208 companies shows Colorado employees are happier with their benefits and find their work more satisfying than employees nationally.

Bob Helbig, Energage media partnerships director, says the businesses on this year’s list welcomed the chance to show how they’ve worked to meet their employees’ and customers’ needs during the pandemic.

The 2021 Top Workplaces list includes 34 businesses that ranked for the first time, including Aurora Organic Dairy, Connect for Health Colorado, AMP Robotics, National Cattlemen’s Beef Association and Hotel Engine.

“While people do care about pay and benefits, they also want to believe in the direction of the organization and do a job that lets them do something meaningful,” Helbig says.

Em Kintner, head of talent and culture at AMP Robotics, says employees come to AMP Robotics because they want to make a difference. The company applies artificial intelligence and robotics to increase recycling rates and recover recyclables reclaimed as raw materials for the global supply chain.

“People want to be part of building something,” Kintner says. “They believe in where this company is going and want to be part of realizing that future.”

John Robinson, senior vice president for communications and membership for the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association, says the association’s employees appreciate helping farmers and ranchers.

“We know they work hard to care for their cattle and their natural resources, and that knowledge powers everything we do on their behalf,” he says. “Meaningful work is crucial for employees everywhere. We’re very fortunate that we get to make a difference for the hardworking men and women we represent.”

Connect for Health Colorado employees work hard to provide affordable health insurance to Colorado residents, says Nyle Boyd, chief human resources and training officer.

Aurora Organic Dairy employees focus on providing organic milk and dairy products to grocery stores across the United States, says Robin Kane, senior vice president of people. “Cow care and cow comfort are at the foundation of how we train our employees, and our products are certified for the highest standards of animal welfare. All employees learn how their role fits into our sustainability through classroom training and regular audits.”

Why participate in the Top Workplaces program

Some companies participate in the program to learn more from their employees. Others do it to show their employees their value.

And others find participation helps boost their recruiting efforts.

Dana McDonald, Hotel Engine human resources director, says the company decided to participate this year to show employees the company values their input.

The company, which provides business travelers services, added more than 100 employees in the past year. It’s also planning to move to a new office in downtown Denver later this year.

Kane says Aurora Organic Dairy was interested in what employees think about their jobs, what they most appreciate about working for the company, and what they would like to improve.

“Since this was our first time participating in the Top Workplaces program, we wanted to get a baseline measurement and learn how we compare to other companies and where we might invest to improve in the future.”

After employees asked for more

opportunities for learning and career growth, the company is working to implement additional training, Kane says.

Boyd says Connect for Health participated to show their employees how proud the company is of their hard work.

“We are proud of our employees and the work they do on behalf of the residents of Colorado,” Boyd says. “Additionally, our culture does not belong to one person, it belongs to everyone, and as a team, we have assured that we focus on our culture and the importance of it with an equal focus on business outcomes and quality. As a result, being a Top Workplaces winner solidifies all of the hard work we have done within these focus areas.”

Recruiting the best employees

Colorado companies want to

recruit the best of the best, and being designated a Top Workplace helps them do so.

Many employees pursue jobs with Connect for Health because of the company’s mission, Boyd says. Being named a Top Workplace helps Connect for Health promote that.

Aurora Organic Dairy uses employee referrals and outreach in its communities to recruit employees. “Over the past year, turnover has decreased, which is partially due to the current labor market, but is also the result of our focus on employee retention through career ladders, job training and employee benefits, among other strategies,” Kane says.

AMP Robotics recruits nationally for its open positions and routinely lures employees to Colorado from California, Maryland, Massachusetts and Pennsylvania.

“It’s not hard. Colorado is a tremendously enticing place to live,” says Carling Spelhaug, marketing and communications manager.

Kintner adds the company is committed to making sure employees are successful. “We want this to be a career and not just a job,” she says.

Hotel Engine continually works to develop new tools to attract top talent, McDonald says. “We also understand that recruiting is just the first step in an associate’s experience. That is why we are ramping up our efforts into our onboarding experience and career growth opportunities. We want to create Hotel Engine Champions, not just associates.”

Realtors expect Colorado’s housing crunch to continue

Colorado’s red-hot real estate market may cool as it runs into the frigid winds of limited housing availability and skyrocketing prices.

Only 1,921 homes and condos were for sale at the end of March in a metro area with more than 3.2 million people, according to the Denver Metro Association of Realtors. The average closing price hit a record high of $674,990 in March, a 19.3% gain from March of last year.

“Despite the brief slow down during initial lockdown orders, the real estate market shows no signs of slowing,” says John Skrabec, president of Live Urban Real Estate.

“The only thing standing in the

way is a lack of inventory, which is causing frustration with both buyers and their agents. The pandemic has only exacerbated the shortage of homes to purchase.”

What’s causing the shortage?

Denver’s housing crunch isn’t new, but the pandemic boosted demand as more buyers wanted to move from apartments into houses or upgrade from their existing homes to bigger ones.

“Home has become more important than ever before,” says Ryan Carter, president of 8z Real Estate. “It’s not only a place of comfort and stability but also frequently a classroom, gym and office.”

Top Workplaces evolve to meet pandemic challenges

Colorado employers scrambled last year when the global pandemic hit to keep their employees safe. Some quickly shifted to having employees work at home. Others instituted new protocols at work, issued protective gear and configured work areas to maintain more distance between employees.

Many expected those changes to be shortterm, but a year later, most remain in place.

The most significant shift was moving workers home. Before the COVID-19 pandemic, just 20% of all employed people whose jobs could be done remotely worked at home all or most of the time. That number skyrocketed to 71% during the pandemic. Now that people are getting vaccinated and restrictions are relaxing, 54% of people with jobs that can be done remotely say they want to keep working at home once the pandemic ends.

A study by the personal finance website WalletHub revealed Colorado has the highest share of the labor force working from home in the country.

Employees want flexibility

The change to working from home when possible will likely continue, says Christina N. Lacerenza, an assistant professor at the Leeds School of Business at the University of Colorado.

“First and foremost, employers are going to need to provide flexible work arrangements,” she says. “Employers also are going to need to be flexible about when employees need to get work done and not require them to be logged in for a specific eight-hour period.”

The change can be a win-win for both employers and their workers. “Being flexible honestly makes for better outcomes and more innovative work,” Lacerenza says.

To help employees work at home, employers provided laptops, extra monitors, and in some cases, came to homes to build workstations.

Reid Wicoff, chief executive officer at Digible, says the company aggressively moved to an all-remote setup at the start of the pandemic. “We didn’t want anyone feeling the pressure to come into work or somehow contribute to spreading the virus.”

To help employees feel connected, the company offered fun classes on topics like yoga and candle making. It also bought fitness trackers for employees to encourage them to remain active and offered online counseling and therapy sessions to boost mental health.

Barbara Brannen, vice president of employee services, estimates 99.5% of Pinnacol’s employees took advantage of that offer. The company has added chat rooms, resource groups, and mental health support to help employees feel connected.

Liz Johnson, Pinnacol public relations director, says the company also offered new benefits like virtual tutoring services to help parents and their children meet the challenge of online school.

Improving the workplace

Some businesses didn’t have the option of sending workers home.

Robin Kane, senior vice president of people for Aurora Organic Dairy, said the dairy’s frontline workers showed resilience as they adapted to new requirements like wearing face makes, getting daily temperature checks, and maintaining social distancing rules. And they made those changes while meeting an increased demand for organic dairy products with more families eating and cooking at home.

To encourage employees to get vaccinated, Aurora Organic Dairy offered incentive payments and worked with Weld County to provide an on-site vaccine clinic at its Platteville plant. That led to 100 Colorado employees getting vaccines in the first weeks of eligibility.

our customers, lessons that will continue into the coming months and years,” Kane says.

Most Custom Made Meals employees had to continue reporting to work to make the company’s oven-ready meals. To protect them, the company hired an on-site certified nursing assistant to check temperatures and ensure employees were healthy, says Katie Prekel, vice president for human resources.

Custom Made Meals provided N95 masks for employees to wear at work, use at home, and share with family members. The company also expanded its break room, staggered break times, and used tents and tables with umbrellas outdoors to provide more break space for employees.

• Flex — When it’s safe to return to the office, most employees will spend one to three days per week in the office for team collaboration, customer meetings and presentations.

• Fully remote — Employees who don’t live near an office or have roles that don’t require an office will work remotely full-time.

• Office-based — Employees with roles that require them to be in the office will work there four or five days per week.

The company also encouraged employees to stay home if they felt sick. “We didn’t want them to worry about sacrificing their income, so we made sure they knew we’d pay them to stay home if they needed to do so,” says Sean Saunders, chief financial officer, and chief administrative officer.

Creating the workplace of the future

Lacerenza says looking forward; employers will need to continue being flexible. “We will realize that some work needs to be done at the office, but other work can be done from home.”

While some employees don’t have the space to work effectively at home, others find being out of the office removes distractions and makes it easier to stay focused on their assignments.

“It’s going to be about working with individual employees to figure out what is the best work environment for them, determining how they thrive at work,” she says.

relationship management software, says companies will need to be agile and creative to be successful.

“An immersive workspace is no longer limited to a desk in our Towers — the 9-to-5 workday is dead,” he says.

“And the employee experience is about more than ping-pong tables and snacks. As employers, we have an opportunity to create an even better workplace — one that allows us to be more connected to each other, find more balance be-

Helping customers

Despite the challenges, real estate agents are committed to helping their customers.

During the past year, 8z Real Estate created programs to help both employees and customers.

“We recognized that many who are part of the greater 8z community were struggling and directly affected by the pandemic — losing jobs, income, or navigating illness,” Carter says. “As a result, we launched the $100,000 8z4Life support fund, which provides housing-related grant relief, including mortgage forbearance, deferment and forgiveness support. We have since paid out 37 grants and almost $75,000 in mortgage assistance.”

Real estate companies also quickly changed how they showed homes to protect both buyers and sellers during the pandemic.

Some of those changes included virtual staging, interactive 3-D tours, limiting in-person home showings, and requiring agents and

tween work and home, and advance equality — ultimately leading to increased innovation and better business outcomes.”

Salesforce is using employee feedback to guide its reopening strategy. “We learned that nearly half of our employees want to come in only a few times per month, but also that 80% of employees want to maintain a connection to a physical space.”

The company plans to provide that flexibility by using three options:

potential buyers to wear masks and gloves during home tours. Buyers also have the option for remote closings.

“The last year has seen tremendous change within the real estate industry, creating a modern market as we have never seen before,” Carter says.

The agency offers its 8z Cash Buyer program to help potential buyers with an all-cash offer, which can be more attractive to sellers. The agency also offers its 8z Bridge program, which allows buyers to move into their new home before listing and selling their current one.

Managing demand

With high demand from buyers, many homes sell sight unseen for thousands over their list price. For houses that stay on the market, even briefly, scheduling a viewing appointment can be challenging.

To make sure more buyers have the chance to see homes for sale, West + Main has changed how it sets up open houses.

“We hold listings open all day on Saturday, and it’s first-come, first-serve,” Staub says. “By asking people to wait in line for a few minutes, we can make sure everyone who wants to see a home can do so.”

Meanwhile, some businesses can’t wait to get back to the office.

The National Cattlemen’s Beef Association quickly switched to remote work, but as Denver and Colorado started to reopen, many workers began to transition back to the office.

“They did it both for the convenience, and because of the collaborative environment we have within the organization,” says John Robinson, senior vice president for communications and membership.

“We believe that the in-person collaboration and exchange of ideas between employees work best when staff members can have the interactions that come with a physical office environment.”

Carter anticipates virtual showings will continue to be popular. “Many clients prefer that option,” he says.

Fixing the problem

Increasing the number of homes on the market isn’t likely to change any time soon, real estate experts say.

“Unfortunately, I don’t see that changing in 2021,” Skrabec says. “It’s difficult to imagine a scenario where more housing inventory will become available soon. We’ll have the normal seasonal uptick in activity during the spring and summer, but as interest rates inch up, it could force some homebuyers to sit on the sidelines. All-in-all, the current market dynamics will remain.”

The market may ease as some homeowners stop struggling to make their mortgage payments or end taking advantage of forbearance, Staub says. That shadow inventory of distressed properties may soon start showing up for sale and help ease the housing crunch.

But the best solution to meeting demand may be building more houses, Skrabec says.

“We are working with our brokers to explore and become experts in new construction, which is a great alternative for buyers who have flexible timelines.”

Pinnacol Assurance is devoted to keeping Colorado workers healthy, safe, and strong by providing workers’ compensation insurance to 57,000 employers.

Pinnacol was quick to pivot as a health-focused company to keep its employees working from home when the global pandemic hit. Barbara Brannen, vice president of employee services, estimates 99.5 percent of Pinnacol’s employees work from home while less than 1 percent come to the office.

To help employees feel connected, the company added new chat rooms and has offered more employee resource groups and mental health support.

Liz Johnson, public relations director, says the company also offered augmented benefits like virtual tutoring services to help parents and their children meet the challenge of attending school online. “That came at the right time,” Johnson says. “My son was struggling with seventh-grade math. I was able to get him the help he needed to get over that struggle. It gave him confidence and a study buddy.”

Pinnacol has also tried to keep work fun by sending employees small monthly gifts and holding virtual holiday events, Brannen says.

Looking forward

The company plans to be cautious about returning more employees to the office. “We’re surveying employees to let them help guide our plans,” Brannen says.

As a workplace safety company, Pinnacol also advises other businesses about occupational safety and shares information about mitigating COVID-19 risks.

Pinnacol plans to install new touchless doors and plastic barriers between desks to prepare for more workers returning to the office. “We want to determine what is the safest work environment,” Brannen says.

She also notes that Pinnacol has found its workers can be more productive when working at home.

And working from home has helped some employees improve their work-life balance, Johnson says. “People are discovering they have pockets of time that they didn’t have before because they don’t have to commute. They are using that time for things like

self-care or exercise.”

Celebrating Colorado living

Each employee gets 16 hours of paid volunteer time annually to help Colorado nonprofits.

“As customer zero of Work.com, we’re leveraging the tool to guide our return to the office. Through Work.com, employees are prompted to select their shift preferences for the week ahead. This allows us to manage floor capacities, avoid potential bottlenecks, and know who’s scheduled to be in the office

Work.com also lets employees complete brief, daily wellness check-ins to ensure they are healthy before getting approval to enter the office. If an employee tests positive for COVID-19, the site provides contract tracing tools and pinpoints office areas that need to be cleaned and sanitized.

Continuing work from home

Looking ahead to the rest of the year and into 2022, the company plans to continue being flexible and allow most of its employees to work from home. To do that successfully, Salesforce has found new ways to help employees feel connected.

Commitment to giving

Despite the challenges of the past year, Salesforce plans to continue giving back to the community. Every employee gets seven days of paid time off to volunteer and can match charitable contributions up to $5,000 per year.

Salesforce’s top 100 volunteers also get $10,000 grants to give to the nonprofit of their choice. Since the company was founded in 2009, its employees have donated more than 4 million volunteer time hours.

Custom Made Meals grows rapidly despite pandemic 1 | Custom Made Meals

The return of the family dinner hour is one bright spot during the pandemic.

And many of those families sit down to meals that started at the Custom Made Meals plant in Denver.

The Colorado company, which has placed on the Top Workplaces list for the past three years, creates oven-ready meals for 15,000 groceries in 48 states.

“It’s a beautiful thing. Families are now cooking at home and sitting around the table together,” says Dale Easdon, president and chief executive officer.

The company’s business increased by 35% from 2018 to 2019 then increased by 35% in

2020. This year, it’s on pace to increase by an additional 40%, Easdon says.

To meet that demand, the company has expanded its Denver plant, added more automation, and added a new test kitchen. The company also is making plans to build a second plant this year, likely in the southeastern U.S., he says.

Custom Made Meals not only kept its employees during 2020, but it also gave them raises and hired more.

“Our employees work hard, and they take a lot of pride in what we do,” says Katie Prekel, vice president for human resources.

Protecting employees

Moving forward

To keep its employees safe during the pandemic, the company used an on-site certified nursing assistant to check temperatures and ensure employees were healthy, Prekel says.

The company provided N95 masks for employees to wear at work and use at home and share with family members.

Custom Made Meals also expanded its break room, staggered break times, and used tents and tables with umbrellas outdoors to provide more break space for employees. It also offered free vending machines.

The company offers continuous improvement training and gives employees opportunities to grow in their careers. In the past year, 17 employees have been promoted to management positions.

“We’re constantly looking for future leaders,” Prekel says. “We want to promote them and get them ready for leadership opportunities.”

When COVID-19 shut down Colorado businesses in March 2020, Stacie Staub feared her company might never sell another house.

But the founder and CEO of West + Main Homes didn’t need to worry. Instead, 2020 was the boutique real estate firm’s best year.

“Every month was the best month throughout the year,” Staub says. “We didn’t think real estate would be pandemic-proof, but it was. We were so grateful for every person we were able to help.”

Still, the pandemic forced the company to make changes. Although the West + Main operates six offices, agents aren’t assigned desks.

“That made it pretty easy to set up work from home,” Staub says.

“We consider ourselves lucky that we were ready.”

But to ease the change of not regularly seeing co-workers, West + Main started offering all of its educational offerings online,

West + Main team members during a video call. created accountability teams, and added a mentor program for new agents that provided one-on-one training and support with a seasoned agent.

“The enthusiasm of the new agents is contagious. The seasoned agents got reinvigorated,” Staub says.

Promoting safety

COVID-19 also created new regulations for showing properties, including strict times for showings and requiring agents and customers to wear masks and gloves.

Colorado’s tight housing market also makes it challenging to help buyers find their dream homes.

“We are trying to be very creative to make sure we know about the newest listings. We look for

coming-soon signs and monitor specific neighborhoods,” Staub says.

West + Main also had to shift its marketing focus from community events such as homebuyer classes, First Friday art exhibit openings, and Pop Up Shops to more online promotions and its West + Main lifestyle magazine.

Agents are encouraged to nominate their favorite nonprofit organization during the company’s weekly Feel Good Friday virtual event.

A winner is drawn randomly from the nominees at the end of a meeting, and the company then donates in the agent’s name to the winning nonprofit. Recent winners include Culinary Care, Colorado Homeownership Coalition, Judi’s House and Doctors Care.

Looking forward

Despite the pandemic, West + Main added 60 new agents in 2020 and anticipates hiring more this year.

The company is also excited about a new partnership with the Home Builders Foundation of Denver that will help raise money to make homes accessible for people returning home after staying at Craig Hospital.

West + Main has been a top workplace since the company opened in 2017.

“That’s one of the greatest honors we receive because it comes from our agents. It goes straight to my heart that they took the time to fill out the survey,” Staub says.

“It shows they are happy to work here.”

Despite a global pandemic, Digible has grown and thrived in the past year by hiring 28 employees and adding more than 400 clients across the country.

This is the first year the company, founded in 2017, has been on the Top Workplaces list. Digible’s employees credit the company’s

authenticity, balance, passion, vision, purpose, innovation, and leadership for making it a great place to work.

“We don’t deliver across all of those categories every day, but we try, and our employees recognize that,” says Reid Wicoff, chief executive officer. “They know we prioritize their happiness above all else, which makes for a great culture. It may seem simple, and in a way it is, but keeping that value as your northern star is a fulltime commitment.”

Digible provides hyper-local digital marketing solutions for the apartment industry.

MotoRefi grows, opens second headquarters in Denver 2 | MotoRefi

MotoRefi, which opened its second headquarters office in Denver, tripled its team in 2020 while increasing monthly revenue, says Kevin Bennett, MotoRefi chief executive officer.

“We were able to do that by leaning into a remote-first approach, over-indexing on communication, and being transparent with our teams,” Bennett says.

The Virginia-based company, which helps consumers refinance auto loans to lower their monthly payments, ranks second on the Top Workplaces small business list.

The company has frequent virtual all-hands meetings, happy hours and game nights. It also invested in providing counseling and mental health services for employees.

Looking forward

MotoRefi anticipates its growth will continue in 2021 and is busy hiring employees for sales, engineering and marketing positions.

Working remotely in 2020 showed the company doesn’t need to require employees to work in a traditional office.

For employees who want to work in an office, MotoRefi supports collaborative in-person work.

“We’re building a community of amazing people on the team, and we’ll always do what we need to do to attract and hire the best talent because talent is the ball game,” Bennett says.

Why Colorado?

Denver was a natural choice for the company’s second headquarters, Bennett says.

Digible also launched DEX, the Digible Employee Experience program, which allows employees to pursue nonwork projects or goals on company time. The company started with two hours per week in February and plans to expand it in 2022 to a full day every week.

Looking forward

Wicoff describes Digible’s future as equally exhilarating and daunting to think about.

“Denver has a powerful combination of great talent and high quality of life that made it an easy choice for our HQ2,” he says. “Cities like New York and San Francisco are getting increasingly expensive and less livable for talent in the workforce, and many people are choosing to live in less expensive high quality of life cities like Denver, which has incredible amenities and an incredible environment. Denver also has strong talent across sales, engineering, product, and other disciplines; it is a no-brainer for a fast-growing startup like MotoRefi.”

Colorado is a natural fit for a company that strives to be diverse and welcoming.

“There’s not just one type of person at MotoRefi, and that’s what makes our team so strong (and fun to be around),” Bennett says.

“We are a rapidly growing company with huge aspirations. Our ultimate vision is to transform multifamily marketing through emerging technology and big data,” he says.

To make that happen, the company plans to integrate and automate workflow and develop a Fair Housing advertising tool this year.

The pandemic validated Digible’s strategy to create marketing technology and solutions capable of adjusting to any environment or circumstance, Wicoff says.

The biggest challenge facing Supreme Lending in 2021 is the lack of housing available for sale in Colorado.

Despite a global pandemic, 2020 was an excellent year for Supreme Lending, which offers customers various loan products to buy homes.

“We were able to keep our team unified and experienced little attrition internally,” says Dale Petrillo, Supreme Lending regional branch manager.

But looking ahead in 2021, he’s worried the demand for houses outweighs the availability. “If we had more supply, we’d see the transaction count in Denver go up,” he says. “COVID has stifled available inventory. Many people are nervous about putting their houses on the market because they don’t want strangers in their houses. I think people are waiting to sell their houses until their comfort level increases.”

The other challenge Petrillo sees is the rising home cost is pricing out the entry-level home buyer.

But even with those challenges, he’s optimistic about 2021. “We will continue to be focused on the services we provide and make sure we offer best of class service to the public.”

Keeping employees safe

Before the pandemic, Petrillo and his staff worked full-time in the office and didn’t have any employees working from home. “We liked the dynamic of everyone being together,” Petrillo says.

That quickly changed last year, and the company invested in technology and built workstations at their employees’ homes. “We

Now, as health restrictions ease, he plans to let employees decide what will work best. The office is set up with individual offices rather than cubicles, so some employees feel comfortable returning to the office. Others choose to continue working from home. “It’s not one size fits all. Some people don’t want to work from home. Others worry about their health. We don’t plan to dictate to anyone where they have to work.”

Employees have been productive and have used online tools to stay connected.

Why Colorado?

Being in Colorado makes it easy to recruit and keep employees.

“People come for the lifestyle, the mountains, the outdoors,”

Petrillo says. “Once they get here, they rarely move away.”

Operations manager Jody Petrillo says the company’s loan officers get multiple recruiting calls, each week. “But those appeals fall on deaf ears,” she says.

Supreme Lending works to keep its employees happy not only by paying them well and offering competitive benefits but also by offering flexible schedules and time to meet their goals.

And it helps that the employees genuinely like each other.

“You spend the majority of your waking hours with your co-workers, so you need to enjoy being with them,” Dale Petrillo says.

“We’re always looking for ways to keep everybody connected. We make decisions as a group. We want to be like a family,” he says.

“Our employees are passionate.

They like what they do and where they do it.”

Creating the workplace of tomorrow

“Being flexible is a good move for our employees. It’s empowering,” Petrillo says. “I like to think our office is more a democracy than a dictatorship.”

He anticipates the work from home trend will continue for some employees. “Some appreciate working from home, so they don’t have to fight the traffic. Others enjoy being there for their kids.”

Once it’s safe to do so, the company will plan more in-person gatherings like cocktail hours, painting classes or ball games.

“We want people to feel welcome. I believe people do their best work when they like the people they work with.”
