INTRODUCTION The 150,000-sf Health Futures Center (HFC) is the first building to represent the 20-year partnership between Arizona State University and Mayo Clinic. HFC serves as an anchor for the new 24-acre campus, a magnet for development, and expands ASU’s impact as a research-focused institution in transdisciplinary medical technology acceleration and innovation, entrepreneurship and education. It supports interdepartmental research and collaborative programs of ASU and Mayo Clinic, establishing a nexus of research, teaching, and meeting space to improve health outcomes in Arizona. The building combines programs of ASU’s College of Health Solutions, College of Nursing & Health Innovation, and the Fulton Schools of Engineering, Entrepreneurship & Innovation, with patient care and research programs of Mayo Clinic. HFC features wet and dry research laboratories, medical simulation, a MedTech accelerator, workspace and meeting spaces, and a conference center.

SITE As the first building planned for Arizona State University’s new Health Science Innovation Campus in Phoenix, the Health Futures Center represents an iconic design and a strong sense of place. The design team master planned the 24-acre campus and then programmed and designed the three-story facility. Positioned on the western edge of the site, the HFC provides a direct terminus to the view corridor of the adjacent Mayo Clinic Phoenix campus. The building emerges from a flat creosote landscape and alluvial floodplain with bursage and scattered Palo Verde trees. From HFC, views include the McDowell Mountains to the east and central Phoenix to the south. Future development will link the building to the Mayo Clinic via a direct pathway, and a u-shaped arrangement of research and development buildings will complete the campus.

With a challenging north-south orientation in a harsh desert climate, the building required a passive-design strategy to mitigate solar gain. Along the east and west facades, glazing is angled to face north, minimizing direct exposure and heat gain while allowing for daylight to reach the interior. The exterior angular geometries highlight window placements and creates a visual, trapezoidal rhythm of faceted form and shadow along the facades.

To test facade performance during design, the team developed a custombuilt parametric tool which was leveraged to provide real-time geometric feedback on various configurations of the primary surfaces and basic structural framework. The computer model projected a 35 percent or greater reduction in solar heat gain from the self-shading faceted facade design.

PROGRAM The program is a unique blend of wet and dry research laboratories, medical simulation, a MedTech accelerator, workspace and meeting spaces, and a conference center. The design of the building maximizes interdepartmental shared space to encourage an environment of collaboration and innovation. Divided into two volumes separated by an entry courtyard, the public-facing northern wing houses the conference center. The space includes meeting rooms, two learning studios, and a doubleheight, 300-seat auditorium with an in-the-round configuration. The research, academic, workplace and flagship MedTech Accelerator program spaces are located in the southern volume and distributed across three floors. The breadth of the interdisciplinary program is on display in the soaring atrium that showcases the first floor laboratories, collaboration spaces, a café and movement lab/yoga studio. The second floor houses the MedTech Accelerator — an incubator space with modular labs created for biotech, biomedical engineering and medical devices companies. The modular labs are adjacent to shared amenities to encourage the companies to partner, create and facilitate research discoveries. The third floor bridges over the courtyard and features simulation labs and flexible workspaces for faculty, PIs and researchers designed to adapt over time.
