Dining with Brad Ferrand

Aperitif, located on the lakefront in Mandeville at 1943 Lakeshore Drive inside a historic cottage setting, is a unique restaurant that offers upscale food with several small plates and full entrees to enjoy. Aperitif is owned by renowned restauranteurs and husband and wife duo Cayman and Sara Sinclair, former owners of the popular Lakehouse restaurant. Besides first-class food, Aperitif boasts an upscale bar serving up creative and seasonal cocktails and mocktails. The food menu offers a little something for everyone. Inventive appetizers include Thai royal red shrimp vermicelli salad with pickled lime and sweet chili, heavenly crawfish and mozzarella arancini balls, and my favorite warm lobster rolls which feature generous portions of butter-poached Maine lobster meat on a toasted brioche bun with a flavorful tarragon aioli. Also, the wedge salad is the perfect starter if you choose to dine on Aperitif’s classic steak au poivre. Speaking of entrées, Aperitif offers incredible options designed to satisfy any pallet. I’m a huge steak au poivre fan and Aperitif’s take on this classic French dish is second to none. The star of this dish is the peppercorn brandy sauce reduced just enough to to form a velvety sauce that covers a tender filet mignon. Whipped potatoes and grilled asparagus are the perfect accompaniment to this dish. This dish rivaled one of the best steak au poivre dishes I ever had at Le Diplomate Restaurant in Washington D.C. Pro tip: add Aperitif’s famous truffle fried as a side to experience the full French “steak and frites” adventure. Additionally, the braised short ribs are served atop green chili cheese grits with a sauce bordelaise. This hearty dish hits all the right buttons for anyone craving a flavorful bite. For those seeking seafood, the scallop and shrimp Clemenceau is absolutely

Why cook at home when you can go out in Mandeville and explore some delicious and festive dining experiences minutes from your house? There are so many amazing dining options that we as Northshore residents can choose when we want a nice night out or simply don’t feel like cooking. Recently, I had the opportunity to dine at two up-and-coming restaurants in Mandeville. Aperitif and Odelia are both welcome hot spots that offer outstanding dining experiences in upscale settings.

divine. How does pancetta-wrapped scallops and royal red shrimp laced with a light lemon crème sound? The thought alone has my stomach grumbling and a desire to jump in my car and speed over to Aperitif for a glass of white wine and this seafood dish. Seriously, this dish must be protected at all costs and must never be removed from the menu. As the final plates were cleared from my table, the mango sorbet arrived like a bright exclamation point to an already memorable meal. The texture was impossibly smooth and icy, melting instantly as it hit my mouth that cleansed my palate without overwhelming it. What an amazing experience and a welcomed restaurant perfect for a date night or a casual get-together with friends. Aperitif is open for lunch and dinner Wednesday through Saturday.

My next adventure brought me to the unique and tasty Odelia. Located at 3529 US-190 in Mandeville, Odelia is an eclectic restaurant that will transport you to a cozy Parisian corner café or brasserie as soon as you step inside. I actually felt like Owen Wilson’s character in “Midnight in Paris” when I ate here for dinner. European and Parisian vibes are definitely front and center at Odelia. Upon entering, I was immediately drawn to the French artwork on the walls and the thickly upholstered large velvet chairs at each table. Initially when Odelia opened, lunch was only offered but dinner is also offered now. The menu pays homage to French and other European dishes. Appetizers include an amazing beet salad with whipped goat cheese, pistachios, and dill and truffled Parmesan fries. I started my meal with the beet salad and the best honey roasted carrots this side of the Atlantic. The carrots were served with whipped feta and a chimichurri sauce. The entrée menu includes chimichurri chicken prepared in a classical French style featuring herb marinated chicken and whipped feta served with Odelia’s delicious honey roasted carrots. Another fantastic option is the slow roasted short rib served with mashed sweet potato topped with crispy onions. This is a truly classic French bistro dish that will teleport your taste buds instantly to the French countryside. For my entrée, I went with the lightly grilled salmon filet prepared with roasted carrots and beets with lemon caper dill sauce cucumber

and pistachios. The flavor profiles in this dish were amazing and had such depth. The lunch menu is full of salad and sandwich options along with incredible appetizers. I wouldconsider ordering two appetizers such as the white bean purée dip and the incredible deviled eggs. However, do not sleep on the truffle Parmesan fries or the French onion dip. The sandwiches featured at lunch provide a wide-range of options sure to satisfy any one. The smoked salmon lox sandwich is a diner favorite along with the Capri sandwich that features pesto, whipped goat cheese, tomato, basil, arugula with fig balsamic vinegar on a perfectly-toasted French baguette. Flavor bomb incoming. Looking for a great Sunday brunch? Odelia offers classic French and European classics with its own twist during brunch service such as its famous quiche, salmon avocado toast and French toast.

In addition to its memorable food menu, Odelia boasts an impressive and extensive wine and cocktail list painstakingly created by co-founder and noted sommelier, Blake De Brock. The specialty coffee is also not to be missed and should be indulged for the full European experience during your next visit.

My visit was such a delightful experience. I wanted to try everything on the menu, but, alas, I needed more people to help me. Next time, I will bring a larger crew so we can dive into the menu and, more importantly, into the full European experience offered by this wonderful gem of a restaurant. Odelia is open for lunch Monday through Saturday and offers dinner on Friday and Saturday nights. Brunch is offered on Sundays from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

American Bank - Mandeville Office

LADDERING AS A CD STRATEGY

In today’s environment of uncertain interest rates, laddering Certificates of Deposit (CDs) offers a smart, strategic way to balance security and opportunity. By staggering CD maturities—say at 6, 12, 18, and 24 months— you can maintain steady access to your funds while still capturing the best rates available over time. This approach can help protect your earnings from falling rates while providing liquidity as each CD matures.

At American Bank, we help customers with strategies, like laddering CDs, that can be a valuable part of their financial planning. It’s ideal for those who value safety and predictability but don’t want to miss out on potential future rate improvements. Even as the market shifts, laddering ensures you’re always earning competitively while keeping a portion of your cash available for reinvestment.

In uncertain times, a well-structured CD ladder is a simple, disciplined way to keep your savings growing with confidence. Please let me answer any questions you have, or help get your ladder up and running. You can catch me at The Reminding over coffee or call me at 985-208-3664 at the Mandeville office of American Bank.

THE guidry FAMILY

For Rhonda and Jules Guidry, home isn’t just a place, it’s a feeling, a rhythm, and a lifestyle they’ve spent years thoughtfully crafting. After more than 14 years in TerraBella, the couple still wakes up each day grateful for the intentional life they’ve built in a community that feels custom-designed for their values, their work, and their joy. Their story begins long before TerraBella was developed. Back in the mid-1980s, during a trip to Seaside, Florida, they encountered the concept of Traditional Neighborhood Living for the first time. With its walkability, charm, and strong sense of community, Seaside planted a dream in their minds: one day, they hoped to live in a neighborhood with that same spirit.

“When we found TerraBella, we knew we’d found it!” Rhonda says. “As homebuilders, we knew we wanted more than just a home—we were looking for a community where we could live and work.”

As the owners of Highland Homes, designing and

building their own home wasn’t just expected, it was an opportunity to create the kind of space that truly reflected who they are. And at the heart of that vision was their courtyard.

The Heart of the Home

More than just an architectural feature, the courtyard is the couple’s sanctuary, an extension of their own personalities and the lifestyle they cherish. Open, inviting, and centered around easy flow between indoors and out, it creates the peaceful, natural environment they had always imagined.

“To us, the courtyard is like another room in our home,” Jules shares. “We love the ambiance, whether we’re entertaining friends or just enjoying time together with a bottle of wine.” Their two Yorkies—Coco and Harper—love it just as much, especially for what Jules laughingly calls their “lizard-hunting adventures.”

The courtyard is also a testament to how the Guidrys

proximity to daily conveniences—shopping, dining, and entertainment—while still preserving a peaceful, close-knit atmosphere. It’s a rare blend that makes everyday life not only easy, but enjoyable.

Loving Each Other’s Company

think about home. It is something lived in, enjoyed, and shared. It embodies their belief that spaces should bring people together organically, the same way TerraBella does.

Community That Feels Like Home

Whether strolling to dinner, waving hello to neighbors, or enjoying one of TerraBella’s many community events, Rhonda and Jules value the freedom that comes with walkable living.

“We love the walkable lifestyle here,” Rhonda says. “It fosters a real sense of community and spontaneous connection. It feels like we’re part of an active and vibrant social network.”

After 14 years in TerraBella and 15 years on the Northshore overall, the Guidrys remain confident they made the perfect choice. The charm of Traditional Neighborhood living still inspires them, reminding them of that spark they felt decades ago in Seaside.

One aspect they particularly appreciate is TerraBella’s

Rhonda and Jules have embraced a lifestyle rich in spontaneity, adventure, and shared passions. “Living as a couple without children offers us a distinct and fulfilling lifestyle,” they explain. “We have the flexibility to make last-minute plans, travel often, and focus on wellness and personal development. It’s a rhythm that suits us beautifully.”

Travel is one of their greatest joys. Over the years, they’ve explored unique destinations across Europe and continue seeking out new experiences around the world. For quick getaways, they’re drawn back to the very places that inspired their love of walkable communities—Seaside, Rosemary Beach, and Alys Beach. They also enjoy wine country in Napa, the mountains of Colorado, and just recently combined business with pleasure—a long weekend through Vail, Breckenridge, Aspen, and Denver.

Closer to home, dining out is one of their favorite ways to unwind. You’ll often find them at spots like Dakota’s, Pardo’s, Lola, Café Lynn, Abita Brew Pub, or The Hampshire; these are just a few of the places they love in a region blessed with outstanding food.

Shopping local is also important to them. They enjoy supporting boutiques like Niche Modern Home, KiKi & Loli, The Southern Curator, and Fleurty Girl. Whether k

searching for gifts, home furnishings, or decorative touches, they gravitate toward places that celebrate creativity and community.

A shared interest in design naturally carries over from their business Highland Homes. They love seeking out new ideas, styles, and inspirations together. Wine, another shared hobby, often brings them to friends’ tasting events at a local bottle shop, where good conversation and great wine make for perfect evenings.

Rhonda and Jules also cherish their traditions and rituals deeply. One tradition especially close to their hearts is making Jules’ grandmother’s crawfish bisque each year for Easter. “It’s a fond memory for both of us,” Rhonda says. “Those are the moments that last a lifetime.” And, during Christmas each year, they ritually watch all the Christmas classics together—even if Jules doesn’t usually rewatch movies. “Christmas Vacation, Home Alone, Christmas Story… they all bring back wonderful memories,” Rhonda says, noting that Home Alone was her mother’s favorite.

The Heart of Their Story

At its core, the Guidrys’ TerraBella journey is a story of true intention: two people who shaped a life of adventure, creativity, and togetherness in a community that feels alive, welcoming, and connected. “TerraBella is everything we hoped for and then some,” Rhonda says. “It’s a place where we can create, connect, and truly feel at home.” For Rhonda and Jules Guidry, that sense of home is not just in the walls they built, but in the life they’ve built together, surrounded by the community they love.

TERRABELLA WINTER BUILDER TIPS

Seal in the Warmth with Smart Insulation

Before the cold really sets in, take time to inspect your home’s insulation—especially in the attic and around windows and doors. Even small gaps can lead to significant heat losses.

Protect Your Foundation and Pipes

Frozen pipes and foundation cracks are two of winter’s most expensive surprises. Drain outdoor faucets, wrap exposed pipes, and ensure that downspouts direct water well away from your foundation.

Prep for Cozy Comfort

Your home’s systems deserve a winter tune-up, too. Have your HVAC system serviced, replace filters, and test your thermostat early. A programmable or smart thermostat can make

a big difference in efficiency—keeping your home warm when you’re in it and saving energy when you’re not.

At J Hand Homes, we believe a well-cared-for home is a happy home. Whether you’re dreaming up a new custom build or perfecting the one you have, our team is here to help you bring it to life.

krewe of eve

Non Profit

Forty Years of Sisterhood and Service

For nearly four decades, the Krewe of Eve has been a beloved symbol of celebration, community, and women’s fellowship on the Northshore. Founded in 1986, this all-female Mardi Gras organization has grown from a visionary idea shared by six women into the Northshore’s premier parade krewe—now boasting 775 members and the largest parade in the region. What began with 260 riders rolling through the streets of Mandeville has blossomed into a cherished local institution committed not only to carnival revelry but to meaningful service and year-round connection.

The Krewe of Eve was born from a simple but powerful desire: to bring the vibrant traditions of Carnival, long celebrated on the Southshore, to the people of the Northshore. The founders envisioned more than a once-a-year parade. They dreamed of an organization rooted in fellowship, creativity, and community support—values the Krewe continues to uphold forty years later. Today, Eve’s members form a strong sisterhood defined by shared experiences, lifelong friendships, and a deep commitment to giving back.

Each year, the Krewe of Eve dazzles thousands with its signature night parade through Mandeville. Beautifully illuminated floats, imaginative costumes, and joyful riders create an unforgettable spectacle. The parade is known for its generous throws—especially LED and custom Krewe items—which light up the night and thrill spectators of all ages. For the Northshore community, the Eve parade is more than an event; it’s a cherished tradition and a symbol of local pride.

the bonds among Eve Girls and keep the spirit of Carnival alive well beyond parade season.

As the Krewe approaches its Ruby Anniversary in 2026, the excitement is greater than ever. Leading this milestone year are Queen Eve XL Melody Menard and King Adam XL Cary Menard, joined by their Royal Court.

Yet the Krewe’s impact reaches far beyond Mardi Gras. Eve members actively support numerous charitable programs throughout the year. They are devoted contributors to the Greater Mandeville Police Foundation Toy Drive, ensuring children in need receive Christmas gifts. They also regularly assist Safe Harbor, the local shelter for victims of domestic violence, by donating essential items for women and families in crisis.

Eve’s philanthropic spirit extends even further. The organization is an official sponsor of Mandeville’s Night Out Against Crime and supports the local Food Bank whenever there is a community need. Members also donate candy for Granny Gertie’s Christmas Stocking Giveaway, providing holiday cheer to children across the area. This year, Eve contributed used crayons to Mina’s Mission, a nonprofit dedicated to creating inclusive environments for children with disabilities. Additionally, the Krewe recently partnered with the St. Tammany Parish Sheriff’s Office to support breast cancer awareness through its “Pinkster” initiative. The Krewe’s First Annual Golf Tournament also selected Brooke It Forward—a nonprofit providing birthday boxes for children—as its charitable beneficiary.

At its core, the Krewe of Eve is a celebration of friendship, creativity, and community. Throughout the year, members gather for festive events including the Royal Court Announcement, the Dinner Dance and Court Presentation, Eve Night Out events, float parties, workshops, and craft days. These gatherings strengthen

LAST WILL AND TESTAMENT

Louisiana’s legal heritage creates a unique, often complex framework for asset distribution— especially regarding Community Property. Without a valid Last Will and Testament, the state’s default rules can lead to unforeseen challenges for a surviving spouse: If a spouse dies intestate (without a Will) and is survived by descendants, the decedent’s share of the community property does not pass outright to the surviving spouse. Instead, the children acquire naked ownership—or what we call “owner in waiting”— while the spouse

receives a Usufruct, the limited right to use and benefit from the property until death or remarriage.

Though this legal Usufruct offers protection, it often creates complications. The coexistence of the Usufructuary (spouse) and the naked owners (children) can cause friction and delay financial

TERRABELLA FAMILY PET

Oliver Malkemus, One-of-A-Kind Collie

If you spot a striking, short-haired collie trotting through the neighborhood with an air of confidence and a lot of fur left behind, you’ve likely met Oliver.

Oliver is a 5-year-old Smooth Collie—think Lassie, but with short hair. (For anyone under 40, yes, Lassie was a famous TV dog.) Smooth Collies are a rare sight these days, which is exactly why Oliver’s family went all the way to Arkansas to find a reputable breeder. In fact, Smooth Collies are so uncommon that Oliver earned a small place in local history; according to his veterinarian, Oliver is the very first Smooth Collie he has ever treated.

Physically, Oliver is—by unanimous agreement—very handsome. His classic collie look turns heads, but it’s his personality that really seals the deal. Oliver is a lovable oddball. He adores every human he has ever met and approaches people with pure enthusiasm. Other dogs, however, can be a mixed bag; if they’re on leashes or safely stationed behind fences, Oliver finds this suspicious at best.

An athlete at heart, Oliver runs miles every day, keeping himself fit and busy. That energy is part of what makes him such a presence in the neighborhood.

Oliver’s story began after his family made a firm decision: after many years of pet ownership and the loss of their previous dog, they were certain they wouldn’t get another. That plan lasted until their son came downstairs one day, eyes welling with tears, and explained that he had never had a pet of his own. He initially hoped for a German Shepherd, but a little research (and fate) led the family to discover Smooth Collies. Oliver soon followed.

They researched all the pros of the breed…but somehow skipped over the cons. One in particular stands out: shedding. Oliver has managed to shed more fur than 30 years of dogs combined.

Despite the fur, Oliver is a beloved and unforgettable member of the Malkemus family and the entire neighborhood—proof that sometimes the best additions to a family are the ones you swore you weren’t going to get.

With community needs guiding future expansion, Covington Trace remains committed to early detection, prevention, and continual improvement of patient outcomes.

Covington Trace accepts all major commercial insurance plans. While federal regulations prevent acceptance of Medicare, Medicaid, or Tricare, the team is dedicated to helping patients understand their coverage and find the right care pathways.

REAL ESTATE TIPS by terrabella resident

WINTER WARMTH & SOUTHERN CHARM

Real estate, revelry, and a little lagniappe for the season

Winter on the Northshore may not bring snowflakes, but it brings plenty of sparkle. Between chilly mornings, Valentine’s Day sweetness, and the Mardi Gras festivities on February 17th, this time of year has its own cozy, colorful rhythm.

• Home Is Where the Heart Is

Whether you’re celebrating Valentine’s Day with someone special, friends, family, or your favorite furry sidekick, love is what truly makes a house a home. Add a few soft touches —fresh flowers, a candle, a handwritten note—and enjoy the warmth that comes from simple moments.

• Let the Good Times Roll

With Mardi Gras arriving on February 17th, it’s the perfect time to make your home parade friendly: clean porches, twinkle lights, festive wreaths, and a bowl of beads for guests. If your home is on the market, a touch of Carnival charm makes showings feel fun and inviting.

• Cozy Up, Louisiana Style

When the temperature dips, it’s the perfect excuse to light a fire, simmer a pot of gumbo, and appreciate the comforts of home. If you’re considering selling this season, warm lighting and cozy accents help buyers feel instantly welcome.

As we step into 2026, I hope your home is filled with laughter, comfort, and a few leftover beads from a memorable season.

JUST FOR teens - TWIN SPOTLIGHT

Julian & Kai Whiteman

For the past eight years, Terrabella has been home to twin brothers Julian and Kai Whiteman, two seniors who share a strong family bond but are pursuing very different paths as graduation approaches. While they may share the same birthday, their interests, schools, and future plans magnify the individuality that defines each of them.

Julian Whiteman is a senior at St. Paul’s School and a familiar face on the soccer field. He has played soccer since the age of three and now serves as co-captain of the varsity soccer team. Julian also plays club soccer with Mandeville Soccer Club and had the opportunity to compete internationally in Spain in 2024, an experience that expanded both his skills and love for the game. Highly active and driven, Julian plays soccer daily, exercises regularly, and has a job working at Pelican Athletic Club. Outside of school and soccer, he enjoys skiing, traveling, and spending time with friends. For an after-graduation adventure, he plans to travel through Europe. And, in the fall, he has been accepted to Ole Miss and the University of Alabama, but has not yet decided which university to attend.

Kai Whiteman is a senior at Northlake Christian School, where he values the faith-based environment and close-knit community, Kai’s main interests are rooted in the outdoors. He enjoys fishing and is especially drawn to colder climates, with hopes of moving to Alaska after graduation with his husky pup, Everest. Friendly and easygoing, Kai enjoys Terrabella’s community events in the square, working at the Pelican Athletic Club with his brother, and traveling with family. This semester, Kai will travel with his senior class to Costa Rica to celebrate graduation. Looking to the future with flying experience already under his belt, Kai has been accepted into the U.S. Coast Guard and has high hopes of following in his grandfather’s footsteps—a helicopter pilot in the Army—by entering the aviation program.

While Julian and Kai share many things—a home, a birthday, dogs, and a deep connection to Terrabella—their senior year marks the start of two separate journeys, each road shaped by the individual passions, goals, and sense of adventure that makes them distinctly Julian and Kai.
