I
n the Jenkins household, there is always something happening. With four children, two active parents, and a neighborhood full of friends, life on Kiskatom is rarely quiet—and that’s exactly how Brenton and Brooke like it. Between busy schedules and neighborhood adventures, their family has found a rhythm that feels uniquely their own. A Louisiana Love Story Before they became the Jenkins family, Brooke and Brenton separately headed to LSU for their undergraduate studies. Brooke grew up in Beau Chene on West Ruelle, where her parents, Bryan and Dawn Burns, still live. Brenton grew up in Beaumont, Texas, but had a strong connection to Louisiana. His maternal grandmother was from Louisiana and had deep family roots in St. Martin Parish. So, when Brenton told his mother he had decided to attend LSU, she offered him a bit of prophetic advice: “Don’t you date one of those Louisiana girls. They’ll get you to marry them and move home next door to their mother.” When Brenton and Brooke met at LSU, it seemed that prophecy was coming true. They married and stayed in Baton Rouge until 2018, when Brenton’s work as an environmental engineer shifted to working from home. The opportunity to move back to the North Shore was too enticing to pass up. When considering where to buy, the couple briefly considered a few neighboring communities, but the lifestyle of Beau Chêene quickly 10 | BC Beautiful Living
solidified their decision. When they began exclusively searching for their home in the neighborhood, they came across it in an unconventional— but seemingly more common—way things happen around here: word of mouth. They came, knocked on the door, and the rest was history. Another Beau Chêne draw was being close to family. Brooke’s sister lives just two doors down from the house they bought on Kiskatom with her three children, Harper, 12, Harrison, 9, and Hewitt, 5. “We feel blessed to have a set of grandparents and family just streets away,” Brooke shares. A Family of Six The Jenkins family is a lively crew of six: Brenton and Brooke and their four children—Adeline, 10; Jackson, 8; John, 5; and Daniel, 4. Adeline is in fifth grade at TMS, Jackson is in third grade at PES, John is in kindergarten, and Daniel attends New Covenant Presbyterian Weekday School Pre-K 4. With four children close in age, there is rarely a dull moment. Three of the four participate in jiu jitsu alongside their mom and dad. Jackson and John also play baseball, while Adeline plays tennis. In the summer, all the Jenkins kids can be found at the Beau Chêne pool, as this summer marked the 7th year participating in the swim team. Sports and activities have become a natural part of family life, but the Jenkins enjoy plenty of unstructured time together, too. They love being outdoors with the kids, swimming at the pool, and spending time with close friends throughout the neighborhood. Brenton and Brooke also September - October 2026

play tennis and enjoy the fitness facilities together at the club. Living in the community where Brooke grew up feels extremely special for them. They are members of St. Timothy Church, where they baptized all four of their children. They can often be found at Wednesday night dinner there with their grandfather Bryan. The seventh member of the family is Koda, a Nova Scotian duck tolling retriever. She’s a little reserved, very loving, a ham for attention, and even acts as the family’s personal weather station, alerting them to approaching thunderstorms. They recently lost their beloved golden retriever, Jenny, but they get reminders of her from her sisters Gurdy and Hattie, who live with the Hingles and Burns. Making Their House a Home The family moved in the summer of 2019 and purchased their home toward the end of that summer. They lived with Brooke’s parents and worked on home renovations at night after putting the kids to bed. By March of 2020, the world was ready to shut down right as they were ready to move in. Their family has grown by two children since then, and they hope to eventually complete more extensive renovations to accommodate their larger family. Still, they have no plans to go anywhere. “We couldn’t ever see ourselves leaving. Kiskatom is home.” Neighbors began feeling like family too: “Kiskatom is like a huge extended family that’s always hanging out or looking after September - October 2026
each other’s kids,” Brooke says. “Our entire street is just a chain of rotating doors and snacks.” They are incredibly blessed by the neighbors and friends who have surrounded them, particularly during the years when they were in the throes of raising young babies and children. It is a place they love so much that they cannot picture themselves ever leaving. “It’s home in more ways than we can say.” When they aren’t with their neighbors, they are at home in their favorite spaces, like the sunroom and back patio, which was one of the initial selling points of the home. Both spaces offer beautiful views of the trees, golf course, and backyard, while the morning light filters in first thing, making it an ideal place to start the day with a cup of coffee. The Jenkins can often be seen hanging in the backyard off tee box 11 on the Oak course. During the fall and winter, the back patio takes on a different role when the family gathers around a fire to watch LSU while the kids play. “We burn through quite a bit of firewood in our house.” Pieces With a Story Some of the most meaningful parts of living here in Beau Chêne include the deep family ties and history in the community. Brooke’s father, Bryan, has deep roots in Covington, with family members recorded here as early as the 1800’s. Every October, they try to attend a fairly large family reunion picnic at the Burns family cemetery in Folsom, fondly known as “Chubby Hill.” And the dedication to this community goes deeper than that. Brooke’s dad, Bryan, founded the West 30’s Redemption Company in 2017 after participating in “Leadership St. Tammany,” an organization that offers a 10-month program learning the inner workings of government, business, civic, and cultural organizations throughout our Parish. The West 30’s mission is to help lower-income families overcome multi-generational poverty by providing affordable, quality homeownership in the historic West 30’s neighborhood — a culturally rich but underserved area in St. Tammany Parish. focuses on “redeeming and transforming lives” by enabling families to become homeowners for the first time, a key step toward wealth creation and stability. They work with local faith partners, pro bono attorneys, and community organizations to offer homeownership counseling, legal preparation, and financial fitness education. More recently, Geoff Hingle, Brooke’s brother-in-law, also put his hat in the running for a seat on the local school board where all of the children attend. “We all attended the public schools here, and so do all our kids,” says Brooke. They are very excited for the prospect of seeing another family member serving the community they care so deeply for. It makes them proud of their family and inspired to one day choose an impactful way to leave their mark on the community as well. The Beau Chêne Way of Life For the Jenkins children, growing up in Beau Chêne provides a childhood Brooke feels is somewhat unique. The older children can pick up a bike or scooter and play outside with little worry, enjoying a level of freedom made possible by the safety and community of the Neighborhood. For their parents, the amenities make family life easy and spontaneous. On a whim, they can visit a park, swim, play tennis, golf, or pickleball, get a workout in, or decide to dine out—all without ever leaving the neighborhood. The combination of freedom, convenience, family, and community makes Beau Chêne a uniquely special place for them. Family Favorites When the family wants to take a break, there are so many options near and far. For a quick weekend escape, Orange Beach is a favorite. Closer to home, drinks and dinner at the bar at Pardo’s are hard to beat, particularly for a date night. They also enjoy downtown Covington, with Bon Sake among their favorites. For the whole family, anything involving chips and salsa is a hit, especially at Habaneros. At home, Sunday dinners bring together the entire family—grandparents, aunt, uncle, cousins, and the six immediate members of the family—for what might be pot roast, a true family favorite. Afterwards, a relaxing movie night with Swiss Family Robinson is a favorite they all enjoy. A Place to Stay Since returning to the Northshore in 2019, Brenton and Brooke have built the life they hoped for: a busy family life surrounded by people they love. Beau Chêne offers something increasingly difficult to find—a place where community still feels personal, where children can experience a little freedom, and where neighbors become part of the family.

Here are a few things to keep in mind: Halloween candy: Stick with softer chocolate and avoid sticky, chewy, and hard candies. Fall snacks: Cut apples and other crunchy foods into small pieces rather than biting into them with your front teeth. Growing mouths: Your child’s smile is constantly changing. “We’ll Do It Later”: Why Waiting Is So Costly in Estate Planning Don’t wait for a crisis to organize your estate plan. The most expensive sentence in estate planning is often, “We’ll do it later.” It’s understandable. Life is busy. But postponing basic planning is often more costly than people expect. This cost is not always financial; it often takes the form of stress, uncertainty, and difficult decisions left to family members during an already difficult time. Estate Planning Is for Everyone Louisiana’s default succession rules may not produce the result you’d choose for your family. Marriage alone doesn’t necessarily give a spouse immediate legal authority to access bank accounts, make health-care decisions, or handle important matters if you become incapacitated or die. A well-organized plan can help address these questions: Who can make medical decisions if you cannot? Who can handle finances if an illness or accident keeps you from doing so? Birthdays & All That Jazz The Brooke It Forward Foundation celebrated its inaugural Birthdays & All That Jazz fundraiser on Friday, June 12, 2026, at the Covington Country Club. Presented by Penny and Quentin Dastugue and emceed by Daniel Munn, the sold-out brunch marked seven years of spreading birthday magic to over 3,500 children throughout Southeast Louisiana. Led by Founder and Board President Marie Rudd-Gregory, Executive Director Jessica Valladares, Program Coordinator Melissa Ojeda, and Event Chair Heather Rietschel, the afternoon blended celebration with purpose. Guests enjoyed live music from the Felonious Monks Jazz Trio, made possible through the generosity of A Gift Given In Jesus Name, along with a delicious brunch, specialty coffees and libations, elevated BINGO, a silent auction, and the crowdfavorite Mini Masterpiece Machine, showcasing artwork by local artist Marianne Angeli Rodriguez. Thanks to the extraordinary generosity of sponsors, donors, volunteers, board members, community partners, and Brooke It Forward’s dedicated Birthday Buddies monthly giving program, the event raised over $56,000 to support the Foundation’s mission of sharing the love and hope of Christ by celebrating birthdays for children who have experienced abuse, neglect, foster care placement, homelessness, or food insecurity. How Brooke It Forward Began Created to honor the memory of Brooke Posey, the daughter of founder Marie Rudd-Gregory, Brooke It Forward carries on Brookes legacy of feeling valued and loved; after all, she was the person who remembered everyone’s birthday. The idea began in June 2019, when Marie saw a story about Bella, a third grader in Kentucky who was creating birthday boxes for children in her school district who could not afford a birthday party. The idea immediately resonated with Marie, who had lost her daughter Brooke in a tragic car accident two years earlier. As Brooke’s 20th birthday approached, Marie wanted to honor her daughter by donating 20 birthday boxes. She reached out to Bella’s mother, but learned that her family wasn’t equipped to accept donations. Instead, Bella’s mother encouraged Marie to assemble the boxes and share them in her own community. Samantha and Lulu
Samantha and Lulu are two peas in a kitty pod. They complement each other and keep their mom and dad company. They are the masters of the house and the apple of their parents’ eyes. Samantha, a three-year-old Siamese cat, is the baby of the family, while Lulu is the more mature fourteen-year-old Calico. Lulu’s distinctive look, besides being a Calico, “with the face only a mother could love,” her mother Phoebe insists, is her missing half an ear. “She was obviously a feral cat in her early days and had been fixed. They clip the ears to indicate that. Well, whoever handled her got a little too happy with the scissors and instead of a snip it was half of her ear. Poor baby!” No matter what, Phoebe has loved them both since they were small enough to fit in the palm of her hand. It’s true, and Phoebe will admit it, that she is smitten with just about any kitten. “I’m an easy target when someone has a kitten. They’ll bring it to my office, and that’s it!” While she does love purebred cats, she has a soft spot for saving lost kittens, which has led her to adopt only mixed-breed cats. Samantha and Lulu are also a mix of personalities. Samantha is a big scardy cat while Lulu is laid back. Samantha is theatrical while Lulu is calm and collected. They are the ying to each other’s yang;

their personalities mesh very well. At the smallest noise, Samantha will jump up, puff her tail, and run in fear. But Lulu doesn’t flinch. She even allows people to see and pet her. When Samantha is crying and scratching, being a drama queen begging for food as if she hadn’t eaten in a lifetime, Lulu waits patiently at her placemat on the floor—where she eats away from Samantha, who is ready to pounce on her leftovers at a moment’s notice. Together, the entire family—Samantha, Lulu, Mom, and Dad—love being together. Samantha’s person is Mom, but Lulu sometimes prefers Dad. “Lulu can become a Benedict Arnold with my husband,” Phoebe says with a laugh. With a house full of kitty joy, the family has filled a lifetime with beautiful moments of companionship, excitement, and love.
