And immediately following Mardi Gras Day is the day of love, Valentine’s Day. Many great local restaurants will be open to treat your special someone to dinner.

Greta Honsberger, Editor Greta Honsberger is delighted to introduce herself as the editor of Inside New Orleans. Having transitioned from a career as an English teacher, Greta brings a passion for words, adventure, family, and humor to her editorial role. In her three-year journey with JBL Publishing and one-year tenure as the editor of Inside New Orleans, she finds immense joy in the position, appreciating the unpredictability of each day, meeting fascinating people, and the continuous learning process. Despite not being a Louisiana native, it has become her home. New Orleans, in particular, holds a significant place in her heart with its unique charm, eclectic culture, and the enchanting magic of Mardi Gras. I am a former Zuppardo family restaurateur, and my grandma Mary Binder, was the founder of Binder’s Famous Bakery in the Upper Ninth Ward on St. Claude Avenue in New Orleans.

As a child, I remember playing ball with “flour” in my grandma Mama Mae’s bakery attic with my 4 siblings Gregory, Michelle, Randy and Billy. My most vivid memories in the kitchen are of Grandma Binder, and my mother Rachel, cooking and baking, old-fashioned healthy, delicious homemade dishes. During Covid, I took a hiatus from my New Orleans radio show “The Cuisine Report.” I am excited to get back “In the Kitchen” to cook for fun and health with my New Orleans community, in the pages of Inside New Orleans Magazine.

Brushstrokes of Bliss

LOUISIANA NATIVE Stephanie Gaffney has carved an inspiring path through the art world, establishing herself as a renowned artist.

Armed with a Bachelor of Fine Arts from LSU, Stephanie’s artistic journey has seen her evolve from a graphic designer to an independent artist. Her creative endeavors have been marked by accolades, including “The Knot Best of Weddings” in 2019 and 2021. Her work found a spotlight in the pages of People Magazine in 2021, solidifying her position as a prominent figure in the art scene. It is an honor to feature her on our cover.

Stephanie’s artistic penchant surfaced young, manifesting a passion for drawing and sketching. “My love of copying images or drawing from my imagination grew into a hobby, and in my late teens, I challenged myself to pick up a paintbrush and give the world of full spectrum color and wet paint a try!” The transition from sketching to wielding a paintbrush marked the beginning of her painting career. As she honed her painting skills, the artist found herself receiving an increasing number of personal requests and admiration for her work. The

Stephanie Gaffney’s Live Wedding Art Unveiled numerous requests and praise ignited a spark and gave her confidence, leading her to explore a freelance and commissioned artist career, even as she was still an undergraduate student at LSU. A career in graphic design was the route that Stephanie followed after receiving her art degree. In her early career, she worked as a designer and illustrator for a t-shirt shop and was a web designer for a time, but Stephanie found herself yearning for a deeper fulfillment in her art. Realizing she could contribute more to her clients by working directly with them and creating unique, meaningful art, she decided to paint full-time. Thus, her journey as an independent artist began, propelled by a desire to infuse her work with a deeper connection to her clients.

In 2015, Stephanie’s artistic journey led her to live wedding art. Her launch into this very personal and specialized genre began with a friend’s unconventional request for her to paint at her wedding. Although a novel concept then, Stephanie embraced the challenge, setting the stage for her new career. “I had never heard of such a thing, but

because I was brave and willing to work (and let’s face it, I was broke and hustling), I agreed to do it and thus started marketing myself as a ‘live wedding painter.’”

With live wedding painting, Stephanie’s approach involves meticulous conversations with clients to capture their vision. “I focus on achieving focused attention on the couple while painting details in the room in a way that allows the viewer’s eye to dance across the canvas and land finally back on the couple. My goal is to create the piece from start to finish by the end of the night, which forces me to paint loosely and intentionally.”

The adrenaline rush and the challenge of completing a piece by the end of the night drives her to paint with intention and spontaneity to capture the genuine experience of the wedding. “ I try to keep them raw and organic while still composed and effective.”

That authenticity is apparent in the final masterpiece.

Stephanie’s preferred mediums reflect her versatility as an artist. She employs acrylics for live wedding paintings, capturing the moment’s essence vibrantly and instantly. In her studio work, she turns to oils, showcasing her adaptability in navigating different materials.

Elaborating on her specific technique, she explains, “I have created a unique method of painting that allows me to use each medium in a similar way, layering and working in thick blocks of paint at the same time successfully.”

Stephanie’s mixing technique unfolds into paintings of exquisite beauty.

She says about her favorite part of painting a live wedding: “I love the adrenaline rush that comes from a blank canvas and a hundred onlookers waiting for you to surprise them.” Not only is she motivated by the rush of the actual process, but Stephanie has always been passionate about recreating things of beauty on paper and canvas. Her live wedding art proves that a wedding is the best occasion for vibrant color and splendor to show off and lend to something quite spectacular on canvas.

As far as memorable weddings, without a doubt, there are many, but, says Stephanie, “I love the ceremony exit scenes and the second line parades!” As a plein air painter, Stephanie ultimately embarks on capturing the exuberant spectacle of a Second Line wedding celebration as she skillfully renders the distinctive procession.

Beyond her canvas, Stephanie has extended her passion for art to education, mentoring over 100 students in the US and Canada. Her commitment to guiding emerging artists reflects her dedication to art and is clearly an aspect of her career that is fulfilling on many levels.

Although art is an essential part of her life, Stephanie finds her greatest joy in her role as a wife and mother. She is married to Christopher Gaffney and is a devoted mother

to three daughters: Madeline, Charlotte, and Hazel. Family is paramount in her life, and she cherishes the balance between her artistic endeavors and raising her beautiful daughters.

Stephanie Gaffney’s mission expands beyond the canvas. Her goal is to create timeless and personal works of art and bring joy to people through charismatic entertainment at weddings by truly elevating the overall experience. Whether she’s painting for celebrities, collaborating with well-known brands, or guiding budding artists, Stephanie’s energy and love for her craft leave an indelible mark on the art world and the lives she touches.

Go Red for Women Empowering Hearts in February and Beyond

AS THE PRIMARY CAUSE OF DEATH in our nation, heart disease claims a life every 33 seconds—whether it is a man, woman, or child. The American Heart Association is committed to fostering impactful community change worldwide and in New Orleans. Their mission is clear: reduce the fatalities from heart disease and stroke while striving to enhance cardiovascular health for men, women, and children.

WHY GO RED FOR WOMEN? The leading cause of death among women in The United States is heart disease. Heart disease surpasses the combined toll of all cancer types and is a persistent threat to women’s health. Heart disease claims the life of one in every three women, emphasizing its status as the most significant health risk for women.

Those impactful statistics are unsettling. Other facts about heart disease in women are important to know as well.

90 percent of women have one or more risk factors for developing heart disease.

Since 1984, more women than men have died each year from heart disease, and the gap between men’s and women’s survival continues to widen.

The symptoms of heart disease can be different in women vs. men and are often misunderstood.

While 1 in 31 American women dies from breast cancer each year, 1 in 3 dies of heart disease.

Considering these statistics and other life-threatening factors, in 2004, The American Heart Association’s Go Red for Women movement was born. Go Red for Women is an all-encompassing platform created to heighten awareness about women’s heart health and spark positive change to enhance the lives of every woman.

In New Orleans, the battle to save women from heart disease is very much alive. The Go Red for Women initiative is in full swing with volunteer chairwomen Dr. Rupa Jolly

and Martine Chaisson Linares as the 2023-2024 New Orleans area Go Red for Women movement community.

Rupa and Martine are passionate about educating women about the impact of heart disease and are dedicated to raising awareness that heart disease can be prevented.

“We are thrilled to have Rupa and Martine’s passion, drive, and energy help to drive Go Red in New Orleans. Their dedication to serving others through the mission of the American Heart Association is boundless. Together, we know that we will have a positive impact on the lives of women in our community and the families that depend on them,” said Coretta LaGarde, executive director of The American Heart Association in Greater New Orleans.

There are many events for the Go Red for Women initiative in the coming months. The first will kick off on Friday, March 1st, at the 2024 New Orleans Go Red for Women Luncheon. Gathering at the Hilton New Orleans Riverside, attendees, who are encouraged to wear red, will enjoy special guest speakers who are mother-and-daughter survivors, a Free Hands-Only CPR activity, a silent auction, and a Live Fierce Fashion Show. Registration and activities will begin at 10:00 am.

INside Peek Children’s Hospital hosted a Taylor Swiftthemed dance party on December 20th for patients in the hematology-oncology unit and announced a raffle for 28 suite tickets to Taylor Swift’s October 2024 concert. Winners will be drawn on March 23rd at the 42nd Annual Sugarplum Ball. Proceeds from the raffle will fund a new Pediatric Stem Cell Transplant Unit.

Mardi Gras Cocktail Recipes for your Krewe DRY JANUARY? Not in NOLA! With January 6th being King’s Day and the official start of Carnival Season, I will share a few of my favorite cocktail recipes you can enjoy with your Krewe on the parade route, at Carnival Balls, or on Mardi Gras Day! First up is a play on one of the hottest drinks right now, and this is a batch recipe.

You can whip up a batch and enjoy on the parade route or at home before you hit the streets.

KING CAKE ESPRESSO MARTINI

½ cup Absolut Vodka ½ cup Absolut Vanilla Vodka ½ cup Three Olives Espresso flavor vodka 1 ½ cup Cold Brew Concrete; I used Cool Brew ½ cup Brown Sugar & Cinnamon Simple Syrup

Combine all ingredients into a pitcher or any container with a lid. Stir and refrigerate for 24 hours.

When serving, shake all ingredients in a cocktail shaker with ice. Strain into a 60

KING CAKE OLD FASHION

1oz Vanilla Rum 1oz Spiced Rum ½ Brown Sugar & Cinnamon Simple Syrup Splash of Vanilla 3 Dashes of El Guapo Holiday Pie Bitters

Rim a high ball glass with purple, green & gold sugar. Fill with ice, combine all ingredients, stir, and garnish with sugared pecans.

MARDI GRAS SIDE CAR

2oz Remy VSOP 1oz Cointreau ¾ ounce fresh lemon juice Orange twist Purple, green & gold sugar for garnish

Garnish a coupe glass with the purple, green, and gold sugar, and set aside. In a shaker tin filled with ice, combine all ingredients, shake well, and strain into the coupe glass. Garnish with an orange twist.

BANANAS FOSTER KING CAKE MARTINI

1.5-ounce Bumbu Cream 1 ounce Absolut Vanilla Vodka ½ ounce banana liquor ½ ounce brown sugar simple syrup 3 dashes El Guapo Holiday Pie Bitters Purple, Green & gold sugar for garnish

Garnish a martini glass with the purple, green, and gold sugar, and set aside. Put all the ingredients into a shaker tin filled with ice, shake well, and strain into the martini glass.

For my beer drinkers, Abita Brewery with its Mardi Gras Bock and Urban South Brewery with its Carnival Time pair well with King Cake and fried chicken.

From Bean to Bliss with Heavenly Hash Delights WHO DOESN’T LOVE TO INDULGE in the delectable delicacy of chocolate? There is good reason to love this delicious and well-loved treat.

Chocolate produces physical and psychological feelings of pleasure, excitement, and euphoria with each bite, so what’s not to love?

Chocolate is harvested from the Amazon Rainforest’s tropical Cacao tree when farmers gather cocoa pods with a machete. The fermentation process comes next, and the beans are placed on banana leaves on the

jungle floor for several days, turning to shades of red and brown as they develop that cocoa flavor we all love. While still developing their color and flavor, the cocoa beans are placed on bamboo mats to dry. This lasts up to a week.

Finally, the beans are roasted, and their shells are removed using winnowing.

Eventually, the beans are ground into cocoa powder and roasted at high temperatures. Cacao (raw) and cocoa (roasted) are both bitter, so we add sugar to our hot chocolate. Chocolate has cocoa butter fat, cocoa solids, and added sugar, making it taste delightful!

The health benefits of Cacao, Cocoa, and Chocolate are many, so the next time you indulge in chocolate, don’t feel guilty! And while you are indulging, enjoy this HEAVENLY chocolate treat from my kitchen.

COCOA HEAVENLY HASH DELIGHTS 1 Cup of Butter 3 1/2 Tablespoons non-GMO cocoa Powder 4 cage-free eggs

TOPPING 1 -10 ½ oz bag of miniature marshmallows 1 - 16 oz bag of Confectioners’ sugar 3 1/2 Tablespoons of cocoa 4 tablespoons butter 6 to 8 tablespoons of evaporated milk Preheat the oven to 350º. Melt butter in a small saucepan over medium heat; remove from heat and let cool. Add the cocoa and stir to mix; set aside. Whisk the eggs and granulated sugar until well blended.

Combine the flour, baking powder, and the salt. Add the flour mixture to the butter mixture. (Whisk to mix well.) Fold in chopped pecans.

Pour mixture into a 9x13x2 baking pan. The batter will be thick.

Bake for 30 minutes. Watch closely, the batter will be dry if overcooked.

Remove the cake and immediately pour the marshmallows evenly over the top of the hot cake to soften them.

FOR THE TOPPING Sift the confectioners’ sugar with the cocoa. Melt the 4 tablespoons of butter and most of the evaporated milk in a saucepan over medium to low heat and remove.

Combine the sugar and cocoa mixture with the butter and milk mixture. If icing is too thick add a teaspoon at a time of milk to reach a syrup consistency and pour over the warm cake.
