By James B. Miller, Jr. | Editor of The Dickinson Press
Each year The Dickinson Press sets out to highlight the very best of southwest North Dakota in our annual Best of the Western Edge contest. The purpose of this contest is to showcase the people and businesses that make our corner of the world a remarkable place to live, do business and flourish.
The “Legendary State” is made all the more so by the Western Edge and her serene prairie paradise, kindhearted people and economic mobility. We seek in this publication to recognize the countless individuals, professionals, organizations and businesses who comprise the soul of our community and were voted on as the very best by YOU, our readers and digital members.
The final numbers are in and we want to thank the 6,549 people who voted,
casting 61,104 (up 4,906 from prior year) nominations between Nov. 27 through Dec. 8, 2024. Of the nominated businesses and individuals, the top 3 (or more if there was a tie) moved onto voting held from Dec. 11 through Dec. 22, 2024, where 107,384 votes (up 14,456 from prior year) were cast and 278 (up 19 from prior year) were determined winners.
Today we announce the winners of categories that run the gamut of life on the Western Edge, from the best burger and pizza, to the best healthcare professional services and Realtors, to the best retail specialties and gas stations. The winners are a selection of some of the best personal services that keep our homes in order, children educated, spirits high and communities strong.
The winners have many reasons to be proud, but not everyone can finish first. Know that it does not diminish the commitment or the effort of the countless unnamed individuals, businesses and groups who share the same passion and desire to be the best they can be every day.
Each and every one who gets up each morning and pulls on their boots and goes to work and tries to be the best that they can be to make a difference in our communities are the real winners.
We at The Press want to congratulate the winners and encourage everyone to take notice of the awards displayed in their place of business or employment. Our goal since the beginning has been to recognize and celebrate what was this year’s Best of the Western Edge, as voted by you. Join us today in this celebration.

We are honored to be voted the Best of the West veterinary clinic by the community we serve. West Dakota Veterinary Clinic is committed to our practice philosophy which is to deliver the very best care we can in the very best way we can. We are a dedicated team of 6 veterinarians and 20 support staff including licensed vet techs, vet assistants, veterinary receptionists and practice managers. Our practice vision is to help clients and animals live happier healthy lives together and to distinguish West Dakota Veterinary Clinic as our community’s premier provider of animal health care.
West Dakota Veterinary Clinic was founded by Dr. Kim Brummond in 1986. After being a solo practitioner for many years, she hired Dr. Erika Schumacher to join the practice in 2013. Dr. Schumacher brought her love and knowledge of horses which resulted in expanding the practice to include an Equine Medical and Surgical Center. In 2015, Dr. Tim Janke joined the practice and has embraced being a mixed practice veterinarian. He really enjoys orthopedic surgeries and
plans to further pursue this interest with additional training. He is honored to have been voted the Best of the West veterinarian. We are so proud of his accomplishments and know how lucky we are to have him on our team. Dr. Amy Dunn first spent time at our clinic prior to vet school and again as a vet student. She joined our team as a doctor in 2021. She works with all types of animals and completed training in the essentials of animal chiropractic through the Options for Animals College of Animal Chiropractic. Dr. Hannah Reetz joined the practice in 2024 and brings a new passion to the clinic. She is certified in veterinary acupuncture and offers this therapy to both small animals and horses. Dr. Angela Bell also joined
our team in 2024 after moving to ND. She has specialized training in small animal dentistry and over 10 years of experience. Our team of doctors work together and patients benefit from their shared strengths.
We are an AAHA accredited small animal hospital and have an equine medical and surgical facility along with a bovine/small ruminant wing. Our state-of-the-art veterinary hospital offers diagnostic services, x-ray and ultrasound examinations, surgical procedures, vaccinations, routine wellness exams and grooming services. We also offer advanced imaging and treatment therapies such as endoscopy, thermography, laser therapy, shockwave, chiropractic and acupuncture. We provide quality care for your animals and support you as the caretaker.
We are proud of our clinic family and we carefully select and train the highest quality staff to represent us and help us carry out our goals. We love our community and are honored to be here to serve and to offer our very best for our clients and the animals entrusted to our care.

In 1921, Chester A. Coborn opened a one-room produce store in Sauk Rapids, MN. He founded the store on freshness and focused on providing his neighbors with the high-quality goods they needed at fair prices. Over a century later, that legacy is still strong today, especially in our Cash Wise Dickinson store. Since arriving in 2015, we’ve prided ourselves on being a community staple for always providing fresh and local products at reasonable prices and supporting this remarkable community that continues to support us.
At Cash Wise, our goals are simple: We strive to serve people. Guest experience is our number one focus. We are continually adding new products that are promotionally exciting and delivering what our customers want and need. Every customer who comes into our store
is valued and treated as if they were the most important one. Our employee-owners are empowered to take ownership of guest focus and enrich each visit so our customers will continue their patronage. We strive to inspire healthy living. We know consumers are particular about their whole food and organic options. We are too. Our produce team and natural foods department work diligently to ensure the products we offer are as locally sourced from regional vendors as possible.
We also offer expert dietitian advice with our in-store Dietitian’s Choice labels and online Dietitian’s Corner on our Celebrate MORE website. We strive to strengthen our community. It’s one of our core values, community giving. We’re proud to support many local non-profit organizations that do remarkable work in supporting
Dickinson. We recognize that through strategic partnerships, financial investment, and meaningful volunteering we can strengthen our community and thrive together. We strive to deliver a unique shopping experience. We want to exceed your expectations with each visit. We offer all guests MORE Rewards where you can save with digital coupons. Plus MORE Reward members can also save on gas with MORE Fuel Rewards – save $0.01 per gallon for every $10 spent.
Our Celebrate MORE site offers unique recipes and helpful resources for busy families. We offer a floral department and liquor store. We provide in-store shopping, or you can order online and have your groceries brought to your car curbside. Simply put, Cash Wise is your remarkably fresh, incredibly friendly hometown grocer!

VOTED AS YOUR BEST AREA MIDDLE/HIGH SCHOOL, BOOSTER CLUB (TRINITY ATHLETIC BOOSTERS), ELEMENTARY SCHOOL (TRINITY ELEMENTARY WEST), PLACE TO WORK, PRESCHOOL (TRINITY TITAN TOTS PRESCHOOL), SCHOOL PRINCIPAL (JOLYN TESSIER - TRINITY ELEMENTARY WEST), SCHOOL TEACHER - ELEMENTARY SCHOOL (JOLEEN PRAUS), SCHOOL TEACHER - MIDDLE SCHOOL (JESSICA EMTER) AND SANDY TIBORMUSIC INSTRUCTOR
Each year, the Best of the Western Edge contest serves as a unique beacon--shining on the people, places, and activities that make our community such a special place to live, work, and play. Spanning decades, Trinity Catholic Schools has worked to be a good neighbor and community partner and we are honored that our commitment to excellence in our community is being recognized in this year’s Best of the Western Edge. We are proud to be in the company of such an impressive roster of nominees whom we also call friends; and we are humbled to be celebrated for simply doing what we love and doing it well. Each day, we strive to awaken greatness in our students and to do this, we are called as a school community to lead by example--bringing our best and being our best each day. We are blessed by the passion and dedication of our Titan faculty and staff who do their very best each day, working in fulfillment of our mission to educate the whole student— mind, body, and soul.
As a 501(c)3 nonprofit, nonpublic school system, the collective nine contest wins this year is so gratifying and meaningful to us. To be named the Best Preschool, Best Elementary School, Best Middle/High School, and Best Place to Work speaks to the vibrancy of our school system as a whole and our collaborative effort to consistently work together in fulfillment of our mission, while helping one another to grow both
personally and professionally. To see the recognition of four remarkable educators--whose work ranges from elementary to high school to administration—is a great pleasure and source of pride for all of us. Mrs. Tessier, Mrs. Praus, Mrs. Emter, and Mrs. Tibor are truly exceptional leaders in education and what makes them exceptional is not just their expertise, but the very way in which they have cultivated their gifts to bring out the best in not just their students, but also their peers. They represent a remarkable body of professionals at Trinity Catholic Schools and to see them recognized is truly a win for all of us. In addition, seeing our Athletic Boosters credited as the ‘best’ celebrates and acknowledges the commitment of our parents, alumni, and friends who give of their time, talent, and treasure to support our students and the programs that enrich the student experience at Trinity. The collective of these nine awards is an inspiring reflection of how our Titans successfully work together in service to our schools and mission and we are grateful for the gift of this kind recognition.
St. Francis de Sales, wisely said “be who you are and be that well.” The Best of the Western Edge Awards are like thoughtful compliments from our community that encourage us that we are doing just that. In the busy day-to-day, we don’t always realize that others are watching and taking note of the good work that we are doing. These awards are
beautiful reminders of the excellence demonstrated by our Titan community every day. It is our hope that our faculty, staff, students, and parents embrace each of these compliments and know of the important role they play in making Trinity such a special school system. For parents who are exploring Catholic education for their children or professionals looking into a career in a nonpublic school, 2025 will be an exciting year to join Trinity Catholic Schools. With the completion of the new Prairie West Activities Center and year-over-year enrollment increases, we will be opening our third elementary school this fall. Beyond small class sizes, standard dress (aka: uniforms), and traditional values, Trinity Catholic Schools is different in that we implement an integrated vision of education where we look out for the needs of the whole person; where God and religion are not just one class period per day; where our young people live lives of faith, looking out for the needs of others and responding faithfully to whatever they are called to do. Just as we are encouraged to continue in our pursuit of excellence by the Best of the Western Edge, we encourage parents and professionals feeling called to be part of a school system where they are valued partners in helping students to recognize their potential as positive contributors in Christ’s world to consider Trinity!
By Dean Kluver & Son Painting
We are honored to be named Best of the West, but I know this achievement is not just mine it belongs to the woman who has supported and shaped me since the very beginning. I want to express my deepest gratitude to my mom, whose unwavering belief in me and dedication to our family has been the foundation for everything I’ve accomplished.
My mom’s journey has never been easy. As an immigrant from Mexico, she faced challenges many could never imagine. And as a single parent during the 2008 financial crisis, she showed me what it truly means to be strong, resilient, and unbreakable. Even when times were tough, and we didn’t always deserve it, she never gave up on us. She always found a way to provide, even if that meant sacrificing her own comfort. I’ll never forget how she made sure I had the shoes I needed for basketball no matter what.
Her kindness, fairness, and sense of justice shaped who I am today. She taught me the value of hard work, the importance of staying true to my values, and the power of perseverance. She has always been my number one supporter, and her love and wisdom continue to guide me every step of the way.
But this thank you is not just for my mom. It’s for the single mothers, the grandmothers who care for their grandkids, and the stay at home moms who manage the household with love and strength. Your tireless support and sacrifices allow your loved ones to go out into the world every day, confident that everything is taken care of at home. You are the backbone of every success, and your efforts often go unnoticed, but today I want to make sure you hear: THANK YOU.
Without you, none of this would be possible. Your dedication and love are the quiet forces that make everything else possible.
With all my love and deepest gratitude, DWK

By Northland Pace
At Northland PACE, we stand out in our approach to long-term care. Our unwavering focus on our participants and their unique needs is what sets us apart. We are committed to keeping our participants well cared for and safe in their homes. Our goal aligns with the desire of many individuals to remain in their own homes for as long as possible. We meet weekly to discuss any changes in the needs of our participants and how we can best meet those needs.
Northland PACE offers a comprehensive range of support for individuals 55 and older in Dickinson, Gladstone, Richardton, South Heart, and Taylor. We provide medical management for our participants. The nurses coordinate all provider visits and doctor appointments and also oversee medications. We offer a wide variety of services in the home, such as housekeeping, meal prep, assistance with bathing, and assistance with dressing. We also provide physical and occupational therapy in the home or at our Day Center. PACE has a social worker on staff to help with emotional
or behavioral concerns and assist with any necessary paperwork, such as Medicaid applications. Also on staff is a dietician who assists with nutritional needs and an Activity Director who encourages social interaction by attending our Day Center to participate in activities.
PACE nurses, CNAs, and medical providers respond to participants’ needs in a very timely manner. Unlike similar programs, Northland PACE isn’t a short-term care service initiated by a hospital stay, and we provide a much wider variety of services than most programs. Our staff works closely with each participant and gets to know them and their needs well. We do regular assessments to stay current on their needs in every area. Several participants have been enrolled in our
program for ten years, increasing the time they can remain in their homes and improving their quality of life.
If a participant needs their level of care to increase, we respond by providing the increased care they need. If a level of care is required, the program’s cost does not increase. If their level of care decreases, which often happens, we decrease care in those areas. Participants remain independent and healthier longer when encouraged to do as much for themselves as possible.
The approximately 40 participants in the program must meet the minimum nursing home level of care and remain safe in their homes at the time of enrollment into the program to qualify for PACE services. We have medical staff on-call 24 hours per day, so we can be very responsive to our participants when they need an emergency. We respond to those needs in the best way possible to assist the participant at that time. PACE also provides transportation for all participants for medical appointments.
By Krystal Clear Hearing
What does it say about Krystal Clear Hearing Center, and how does it feel, to have won two categories in this year’s competition?
We feel absolutely honored, grateful and blessed. I am a native of Gladstone, ND and serving the Dickinson community and surrounding areas has been my dream since deciding I wanted to be an Audiologist in 2008. I am so grateful that this community voted me the best Audiologist and my practice the best Hearing Aid Center because I would not want to practice anywhere else, and winning this competition means those feelings are reciprocated.
How often do you recommend individuals to get their hearing assessed?
Annual hearing evaluations are highly recommended for those over the age of 60, whether or not they perceive hearing difficulties. Additionally, adults working in noisy professions, those who have loud hobbies, those who have a known hearing loss and wear hearing aids should schedule annual hearing tests, and all should schedule a hearing test if they notice changes, especially sudden changes in their hearing or
tinnitus. For all other adults, it is a general guideline to have your hearing assessed every 3-5 years.
Can you describe the services that your center offers to customers?
Cerumen (ear wax) removal, custom hearing protection (our most popular is for hunting or “shooters protection”), comprehensive hearing and tinnitus evaluations, hearing aid fittings and many other hearing aid related services. In addition, we pride ourselves in providing our patients with an exceptional experience from start to finish with all services rendered. Our patients are highly valued.
How do you help customers overcome hesitancy or skepticism of the use of hearing aids?
I think some people struggle with the idea that hearing aids are big and wearing them will make them look old. But today’s hearing aids are small and discreet—nearly indistinguishable from the Bluetooth headphones and smart devices that are now commonplace, and because of that, it seems that our society has become much more
accepting of high-tech solutions, like hearing aids, for staying healthy. In response to wearing hearing aids making them look old, I lovingly remind my patients, “If anything makes you seem old, it’s the need to continually ask others to repeat themselves because you can’t understand them— not the device in your ear.” Not only that, but untreated hearing loss has been linked to serious issues like isolation and loneliness, depression and anxiety, cognitive decline and worsening of dementia. Hearing aids can stimulate the degenerating auditory system and provide new sensory information to the brain. So if you (or a loved one) have been struggling with hearing loss, please schedule a hearing test with us. We will work with you to address any concerns or fears you might have and find the right treatment that fits your needs.
Do you have anything else you would like the readers to know?
I just want to say thank you to my current patients for supporting me and if you are not a patient of mine yet, I invite you to become a patient and I look forward to serving you soon!
