The Talmud describes a visit by Rabbi Yochanan and Rabbi Elazar to their teacher, Rabbi Yehoshua, following a day of study. When Rabbi Yehoshua asks what they have learned, his students respond, “We are your students, and from your waters we drink,” meaning that they exclusively learned from his wisdom. Interestingly, Rabbi Yehoshua replies: “Even so, it is impossible to learn without something new.” With this ancient anecdote, the Talmud reminds us that education cannot move forward without evolution and innovation. As the nation’s first pluralistic Jewish secondary day school, Barrack’s modern approach to education has always been steeped in history. From our start in 1946 through today, we have been teaching our students to become critical thinkers and problem solvers with a curriculum that is constantly evolving, yet always grounded in, and enhanced by, essential Jewish values and texts.

At Barrack, we have always strived to provide a fertile environment in which our students can find their strengths, discover how to ask questions, and learn how to learn.

The challenge we currently face, along with all Jewish day schools, is how to impart the foundational skills and thinking needed to thrive in our world of rapidly accelerating technological change. To better understand this challenge, this summer, we asked our administration to read What School Could Be, by Ted Dintersmith, a renowned entrepreneur who set out on a mission to raise awareness about the need to reimagine education for the future. After a year-long nationwide tour, his major finding was that educational change should need not wait for a future revelation or technological revolution, but rather that small innovations can help schools evolve and grow in the present. At Barrack, we have always strived to provide a fertile environment in which our students can find their strengths, discover how to ask questions and learn how to learn. We are continually innovating in ways large and small. Gratifyingly, we have witnessed our extraordinary students rise to these newfound educational opportunities. At Barrack, Our Future is Today and we look forward to showing you our growth and innovation in this, our Annual Report.

With that focus in mind, we will support and guide our students with consistency and care while challenging them to think critically, persist through difficulty and build valuable skills that allow them to delve deeply into their studies and into real world problems, coming to an understanding of who they are as learners and members of our community, building confidence so they prepare for the Upper School experience.”

With a theme of student advocacy and empowerment, SA engages representatives from each grade whose roles and responsibilities include proposing policy, voting, investigating concerns, and representing their peers in student government meetings. SA has a direct line of communication with the senior administrative team and often presents directly to the Board of Directors, assuring greater transparency, accountability, and effectiveness.” 5

Our students have diverse backgrounds and interests and represent every denomination and stream of Jewish observances. We offer excellent academics, a warm community, strong co-curricular clubs, an award-winning theater program, cutting-edge STEAM project-based learning, all deeply rooted to our mission and vision for the future.

We have a significantly improved network infrastructure, a fully staffed internal IT team, and an on-staff educational technologist.”

“When asked about Barrack athletics, the first words that come to mind have little to do with competition itself. Friendship, teamwork, leadership, and community are what define Barrack Athletics. Being a Barrack Cougar means so much more than just playing sports. By encouraging teammates, respecting coaches, and exhibiting sportsmanship, a great athlete can be a true leader on and off the field. I experienced these values in action when I arrived in sixth grade and put on my blue and white jersey for the very first time. The older students motivated me to work harder

because of their constant encouragement and ability to create a welcoming, supportive, and fun atmosphere. In so doing, our teams became a community, and that is really what Barrack is all about. As a senior it is my turn to lead: to be that encouraging voice to all of my teammates, to put forth my best effort always, and to wear the Cougar jersey with pride. Barrack athletics have provided memories that will last a lifetime and I will take the relationships built and lessons learned with me as I move forward in life.”

HOW DO WE EXPRESS OUR LOVE FOR ISRAEL?

Meryl Sussman DIRECTOR OF ISRAEL EDUCATION, EXPERIENCES & SPECIAL PROGRAMMING “I look forward to enhancing, enriching and deepening the Israel education, experiences, and celebrations at Barrack. This exposure will support each student in learning about Israel’s history and contemporary dilemmas. My goal is that each student finds an area of ongoing interest and involvement - perhaps through Hebrew culture, geo-politics, innovation, democracy, or pluralism.”

At Barrack, one of the avenues in which students explore and develop their Jewish identities and their connection to the Jewish people is by learning about the land of, people of, and State of Israel using the values of Klal Yisrael.

PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS Classroom-based, informal, and experiential instruction across all grades 11th and 12th grade Seminars and Webinars, with speakers like Times of Israel founding editor David Horovitz talking about the 2019 elections in Israel Middle School learning culminates in an experiential 10-day Israel trip 11th grade Trimester experience at the Alexander Muss High School in Israel in a strategic partnership with the Jewish National Fund (JNF) Partnership with Ofanim, a STEM educational organization that works with communities in Israelâ€™s periphery. Senior community service project with Ofanim in Israel, Spring of 2020 and beyond Advocacy experiences with national conferences like the Schusterman High School Summit, the AIPAC conference, and more
