STUDENT ADDRESS Hi everyone. Welcome to the class of 2022’s graduation ceremony.

As I stand before you all today, speaking to you in Hebrew, in my white dress, at yet another turning point in my education, I cannot help but feel nostalgic. For those of you who stuck around long enough, you might feel that same feeling, as you think back to just four years ago when Jessie Singer and I stood before you at our 8th Grade Moving Up Day ceremony to tell you about our middle school adventures, once again in Hebrew. Writing a speech that is to be given at such an important event is challenging enough, but now imagine having to translate and recite that speech in another language. Scary. I wanted to open with that disclaimer so that when I mispronounce or completely mistranslate a word, or maybe an entire sentence, the Israelis in the room will have some sympathy. Then again, I have been taught by the greatest Hebrew teachers over my years at Barrack, so it is fair to say I have been training the past seven years of my life for this very moment. Even more so after being in Israel for the past two months. I can honestly say that my favorite thing about Israel is when I order falafel in pita and they respond with, “where is your Hebrew from?”

Now on to the most important topic of conversation, the Class of 2022. I came to Barrack in 6th grade, along with so many of my Perelman friends who I’ve been with since kindergarten—and of course the elite few who were with me back in my preschool days at Adath Israel. Even with so many familiar faces, everything felt so new: new classes, teachers, friends, new responsibilities. Suddenly, we didn’t have to walk to class in a single-file line, and science wasn’t just watching Brain Pops anymore. It took a few weeks, but the Class of 2022 did what we do best: we figured it out. We dealt with the new responsibilities, some of us better than others, and we quickly learned how to make the most out of everything. When the school felt as though they had had just about enough of their new 6th graders, they shipped us away for three days to the middle of nowhere where we

were forced to learn about nature and sing songs before, during, and after every meal. We weren’t so sure about it at first, and it definitely brought us out of our comfort zones, but by the end of the trip, we were singing every song, and I bet if you asked one of us today, we could probably still sing them to you.

From our middle school days of morning photoshoots in the staircase before class, sitting at a round table in the dining commons during lunch, and our infamous shabbatons, we certainly made our mark over the years. I wanted to share a little story with you all. It was our 8th grade shabbaton. The girls had turned the library into a vacation home with sleeping bags covering the floor. I’m not sure how much you all remember about that shabbaton, but the boys were a bit occupied and the girls were in desperate need of our own activity. I had packed a game called Resistance that I used to play with my family. It’s the kind of game where everyone gets a card with an identity; you’re either a spy, or you’re part of the resistance. If you’re a spy, the one thing you cannot do is let anyone think you are a spy. The girls all sat down on the library floor and we dealt out the cards. Jessie Singer was a spy, and she was determined to fool us all. Dayna Felger, however, sat contently on the side, a proud member of the resistance. The game escalated and soon enough, a screaming match broke out as Jessie began to accuse Dayna of being a spy and proceeded to convince the whole room that she was right. We quickly turned on her and nobody would allow Dayna to go on a mission the rest of the game. By the end, when we flipped our cards and revealed our identities, Dayna was crying hysterically. We are a determined, strong willed group of kids. Of course, the crying was followed by hugs and apologies as we headed down stairs to play “I am sitting on a chair and calling on.”

That night stands out to me as I think back to our times at Barrack together. We go through bumps in the road, there are often tears and challenges that come our way, but the Class of 2022 always finds their way over those bumps, and we always do so together, sometimes turning an unfortunate time into a great story.

When we left for Israel two months ago, none of us knew what to expect. We had waited so long to have this opportunity, and it was presented to us as unlike any other Muss trip in Barrack history. When we first landed and the trip began, let’s just say we weren’t the happiest campers. Having to wake up on “David time” every day to catch a 7:30 bus, hike for five hours, visit a cemetery, and then occasionally have to use our own money for DOTS, was certainly not what we expected of our Muss experience. Slowly but surely, we figured it out. Each day that felt annoying at the time formed into a great story we told our parents when we got back home. We made the most of our trip. Take Yam le Yam, for example. I had blisters on my toes, dirt on my face, and sweat all over my shirt. But, the second I ran into the Kinerret alongside all of my friends, those discomforts instantly became critical parts of the experience I just completed, things I was excited to tell my parents and friends about when I got home, things I can look back on and laugh about. It is those kinds of memories, the ones that feel like bumps in the road at the time, the ones that turn themselves into memorable moments sometimes only in hindsight, that I believe have shaped the Class of 2022’s Barrack experience over the last four (and for some, seven) years.

Before I step down, I would like to say thank you to the many people who helped us get to where we are today. Every single teacher at Barrack contributed in their own way to our journey, and we could not have done it without the hard work, guidance, and patience of each one of you. I would also like to say thank you and congratulations to the Class of 2022. As I think back on our time together and think ahead to the future, I know that we are going to make just as big of an impact on the world as we have made on this school. Any time you hit a challenge, just think back to all we have overcome together in these few, short years, and always remember, what may seem impossible, disheartening or uncomfortable, may very well turn into a great story down the road.
