Dear Friends,
We are grateful for the opportunity to gather with you this evening to celebrate our school and honor Dr Charles H ’75 and Rachel Korman two people who have dedicated their lives to ensuring a strong Jewish tomorrow through Jewish education I am thankful to be here with you tonight in joy, celebration, and hope for our shared Jewish future
Each in their own way, Charlie and Rachel have displayed a deep and abiding commitment to the continuity of the Jewish people through day school education. Charlie, a graduate of Akiba Hebrew Academy, class of 1975, continues to give back to his alma mater in significant and meaningful ways as a longtime board member, thought partner, donor, and leader within our school community. Charlie’s volunteerism, philanthropy, and leadership extends far beyond Barrack, as he dedicates his time and talents to Camp Ramah in the Poconos and Har Zion Temple. Charlie’s commitment to cultivating vibrant and enduring Jewish communal life is threaded throughout all of his personal and professional pursuits It is especially meaningful for us as a community to be able to honor an Akiba/Barrack alumnus who represents and embodies the values and ideals we seek to impart to our students each and every day
Rachel has dedicated her life to teaching and inspiring the next generation of Jewish leaders As a general studies teacher at Perelman Jewish Day School for the past three decades, she has taught countless elementary students, many of whom have gone on to become students at Barrack She has enriched the Camp Ramah in the Poconos community, as well as, having worked there for eight summers Throughout her career as an educator, both in and out of the classroom, Rachel has devoted her talents, passion, and energy to educating our children and contributing to Jewish communal life.
As the words of the singularly important Shema prayer instruct us:
“And you shall teach these words to your children and you shall speak of them ”
Charlie and Rachel are an embodiment of what it means to teach our children in the words and ways of our Jewish tradition It is more important than ever to educate the next generation to become knowledgeable, engaged, and proud Jews Charlie and Rachel live their lives dedicated to the philosophy that Jewish day schools offer the community, values, and learning that are critical to a thriving, connected Jewish people and to ensuring the strength and perpetuity of “our community, our future ”
Thank you, Charlie and Rachel, for your wisdom, leadership, and example It is through dedication like yours that we will continue to pass down our shared story and build our Jewish community for generations to come.
