JAZZ CITY: REFLECTIONS ON LOUIS Featuring PHAREZ WHITTED and DERRICK GARDNER

Louis Armstrong arrived in Chicago in 1922 from New Orleans to play as a sideman for King Oliver. He left Chicago an international superstar. He was a genius player and composer, a founding father of jazz, and the first cultural ambassador of the United State. Throughout 2022 join us for concerts, exhibits, discussions, and more as we celebrate and tell the story of this master musician’s life and legacy. Tonight trumpet greats Pharez Whitted and Derrick Gardner present their own distinct styles of playing while invoking classic Louis Armstrong.

ABOUT JAZZCITY JazzCity is a free concert series initiated in 1997 by the Jazz Institute of Chicago in collaboration with the Chicago Park District to bring people together to listen to Chicago’s top jazz musicians.

Created to connect people of all ethnicities and generations to the legacy of jazz in Chicago, this annual concert series which honors Chicago’s Jazz icons and their legacy is presented free of charge and right in people’s own backyards. JazzCity provides musicians with an opportunity to present new work, and audiences with an opportunity to bring families and friends to see worldclass musicians in the friendly environment of a Park District field house. The concert series fosters greater awareness of the continuing legacy of Chicago’s vibrant jazz community and an unparalleled opportunity for musicians to reach audiences in the neighborhoods where they live.

ABOUT THE ARTISTS:

PHAREZ WHITTED Musician, composer, educator. Pharez is Chicago’s Youth Symphony Orchestra (CYSO) Jazz Director.

His deep roots in music go as far back as the 1930’s in Indianapolis where the Hampton Family Band first began performing. His mother Virtue, his uncle Slide Hampton and the other 10 siblings (12 in total) laid the foundation with their self-educated and courageous father, Clarke “Deacon” Hampton at the helm.

It wasn’t just that Pharez’s father, Thomas Whitted Sr., played drums with Freddie Hubbard and Wes Montgomery, or that his mother, sang and played the bass, it was the love he had for this music and his close ties with it. After earning his Master’s Degree at Indiana University Jacobs School of Music, he recorded his first self-entitled album, ‘Pharez Whitted’ with Motown in 1994 and continued recording solo albums ever since.

His music is for the people, to lift them up and inspire beautiful thoughts and a harmonious vibe throughout the Universe.

DERRICK GARDNER Inspired by the finest hard-blowing funky bop bands of the 1960’s, Derrick work to extend that great tradition as a composer, arranger, performer, leader and educator.

With extraordinary, creative natural talent, Derrick quickly made his mark upon arriving on the New York jazz scene in 1991.

There he began a top-flight career that has taken him around the world performing internationally with the Count Basie Orchestra, (1991-present), Frank Foster’s Loud Minority Band, Harry Connick Jr.’s Big Band, The Smithsonian Jazz Masterworks Orchestra and Swiss tenor player Roman Schwaller’s European Sextet. Over the last 18 years Derrick has worked with a tremendous litany of artists that include late Dizzy Gillespie, George Benson, Frank Foster, Jon Faddis, Nancy Wilson, Tony Bennett, Joe Williams, Rufus Reid and Clark Terry just to name a few. Mr. Gardner formed his own sextet, The Jazz Prophets, in 1991; it continues to be the primary vehicle of his distinctive, hard-driving music.

RICHARD JOHNSON Richard is an accomplished composer and arranger with four musical releases as a leader. His latest co- lead project with Gregory Generet, entitled 2 of A Kind, features a stellar cast jazz ensemble consisting of Freddie Hendrix on trumpet, Jon Beshay on tenor saxophone, Barry Stephenson on Bass, & Henry Conerway on drums.

JEREMIAH HUNT Whether it’s jazz, funk, blues, rock & roll or any other art form that

comes his way, Jeremiah is one of Chicago’s highly sought-after bassist.

He has shared in all of the top rooms including the famous Jazz Showcase, The Green Mill, Andy’s Jazz Club -and many of the underground favorites like The Whistler, The California Clipper.

KYLE SWAN Grammy Award winning drummer Kyle Swan has participated in many music festivals across the world, including the Montreal Jazz Festival, Jazz Cruise, Port Au Prince Jazz Festival, Dromos Jazz Festival, Guatemala Jazz Festival, Menorca Jazz Festival, to name a few. He has had the honor of playing artists such as Brian Lynch, Gonzalo Rubalcaba, and Paquito D’Rivera, Bobby Broom, Orrin Evans, Alex Brown, Sean Jones, Eric Reed. As a student of the Black American art form that is Jazz, Kyle has devoted quality time to his musical evolution, instruction, and mastery.

JAZZ LINKS ENSEMBLE A 2021 Kiewit-Wang Scholarship recipient, Brendon Harper is a 16-year-old junior at Lincoln Park High School. He currently participates in the Jazz Links Student Council Program (JLSC), Ravinia Jazz Scholars, and CYSO’s Jazz Orchestra which is under the direction of Pharez Whitted. He currently studies with Richard Johnson and Ernie Adams.

Brandon will lead a trio joined be fellow council members Tom Gotsch from Jones High School on bass, and Chase Wilkins on from Chi-Arts High School on drums.
