About Williamsburg Jazz Outlet:
Williamsburg Jazz Outlet (get it? Williamsburg… Outlet) is the top jazz band at Williamsburg High School, directed Leah Schmidt, one of two new bands joining The Corridor Jazz Project this year.
The past 3 years, the band has earned a Division I rating at the state jazz competition and has scored well in their 3A class. In addition to competitions, Jazz Outlet performs for at home for the holiday concert as well as Williamsburg’s annual Dessert Cabaret. They are directed by Leah Schmidt. Mrs. Schmidt is no stranger to the KCCK stage. She performed at Jazz Under the Stars in 2022 with the Iowa Women’s Jazz Orchestra. She’s a UNI grad, so it’s probably no surprise that she reached out to her former professor as guest artist.
About Bob Washut:
Bob Washut is Emeritus Professor of Music at The University of Northern Iowa, where led the jazz faculty from 1980 until he retired in 2018. During his years as director of UNI's Jazz Band One, he recorded 11 albums, toured Europe 3 times, and won dozens of ensemble and original awards. His interest in Latin music led him to form Orquesta Alto Maiz, Iowa's legendary salsa band in 1986, introducing latin jazz to thousands of music fans, many of whom would become his students and go on to lead their own bands. He's released numerous albums and been honored multiple times as a jazz educator. Perhaps his most lasting contribution will be the culture of jazz composition he, along with Chris Merz created at UNI. When you look at your program and see a song composed or arranged by an Iowan, chances they were inspired by Bob.
This song is a new composition. Bob was one of just 6 composers chosen nationwide to write a new chart for the Jazz Education Network, the national jazz education organization. It debuted at the JEN conference in January 2024, performed by the U.S. Navy Commodores!
