December and the Christmas period were particularly busy - in addition to the annual golfing events. we also had the Omega Dubai Ladies Masters which was won in spectacular style by Shanshan Feng, her fourth time of winning and her third consecutive win. It was great to see Professional, Bryan Smyth here during ODLM who came out to caddy once again for Paige Spiranac. The Academy’s Head Pro, Stephen Deane, also caddied this year for up and coming Chinese star, Muni He and both Bryan and Stephen have written a few lines for this issue about their caddying experiences for these talented players Lady Captain Maura received my reminder about her write-up for Club Life magazine as she was sitting at the airport waiting for her flight to Bangkok where she was heading for Christmas. Meanwhile, I am putting this month’s issue together as I am sitting on a flight to Cape Town…well, it is a long flight so no excuse not to be doing something useful!!

Thanks to Captains Vipen and Maura as well as Vice-Captains Ivan and Najla for all their hard work, particularly in the run up to Christmas, which is always a hectic time with competitions galore as well as having to organise the raffle for the Junior Colleagues’ Fund. We will be heading into the Omega Dubai Desert Classic soon which takes place 2nd - 5th February 2017. It promises to be an exciting event once again with some many of the top players confirmed to play - Henrik Stenson, Rory McIlroy, Danny Willett, Rafa Cabrera Bello and Thomas Bjorn all past winners of the event and, of course, all honorary members of Emirates Golf Club. In addition, two time champion and golfing icon Tiger Woods will be making his first appearance on the Majlis course since the 25th Anniversary tournament in 2014 and his eighth appearance in the event since his debut in 2001. Others confirmed for the event are Sergio Garcia, Lee Westwood, Darren Clarke, and Ian Poulter. There will be many more top class players taking part so make sure you get to the Club to watch all the action. I would also like to take a moment to thank the Almighty for giving us the opportunity to enjoy each other’s friendship and the immaculate facilities at Emirates Golf Club which brings us together week after week, month after month, in such beautiful surroundings.
2016 has been a difficult year for most and I hope 2017 turns out to be much better than 2016.

ongratulations to Veneet Mohan, who scored a net 74 on the Majlis course to win the OMA Emirates December Medal, supported by Porsche Centre Dubai and Ascots and Chapels. Veneet’s solid score saw him also top A Division ahead of Scott MacPherson (better back 9 score) and Pavan Nihalani, who both shot a net 77 on what was a very difficult day of scoring on the Majlis! Anand Lakhiani claimed victory in B Division after scoring a net 75 ahead of David Moody and Paul Hanlin who shot a net 76 and net 78 respectively. C division
was won by Sudhir Vora who shot a net 75. George Gourlay produced a great round of golf to win the best gross prize, shooting 82 on a tough day and clinching the prize on a scorecard playoff over the back three holes. As a feature of the Monthly Medal events, Porsche Centre Dubai kindly sponsor the nearest-the-pin competition and George Gourlay claimed victory this month on the 7th hole - an excellent effort. George will be one of eight qualifiers and eight other invited golfers forming two teams led by celebrities who will contest the season-ending Par 3
style Porsche Centre Dubai shootout on the 18th hole of the Majlis.

he email from Jacqui requesting my Club Life article arrived as I was sitting in the airport with my family waiting for our flight to Bangkok. I confess it had completely slipped my mind as the month of December has been a blur! It has been a month of fun-filled Christmas competitions, too many delicious festive meals and the Ladies Masters somewhere in between. I’m not sure any other golf club could successfully host as many events as Emirates Golf Club management team and junior colleagues did in December. Vipen and I would like to thank you all for your generosity in supporting the Christmas raffle, all the proceeds of which go into the Junior Colleagues’ Fund which serves as an acknowledgement and appreciation of the excellent work done by them all year round.

ongratulations to the winning team of this year’s Christmas Scramble, Bhupesh Sharma, Sameer Joshi, Naresh Bhambaney and Komal Sharma who shot a fantastic scramble score of net 55 on the Faldo Course.
What a fantastic final round of the Ladies Masters with Shanshan Feng showing off her world class credentials by shooting an impressive 64 in very windy conditions to win the title for the fourth time, and three times in a row.
As ever, the event was well contested with the eventual runners-up Raj Janardhan, Naima Maya, Tej Chhabra and Alok Rawat finishing a close second with a net 56, claiming this prize after a card count-back. Third place went to the team of Achal Ghai, Rajesh Sethi, Arjun Gupta and Mohammed Darwish, also with a net 56.
The December festivities began with our much loved Christmas Scramble on Sunday 4th December, the highlight of this year’s competition being Sue Hopwood prancing around the Club in her camel costume much to the amusement of the Ladies European Tour players and caddies.
On course competitions included ‘beat-the-pro’ which was supported by the Academy’s Jonathan Craddock and Dubai Islamic Bank. The AED 500 prize went to Malcolm Clarke. Other competitions included longest drive for the ladies which was won by Naema Maya. Anil Shivanna was the men’s longest drive winner. Nearest the pins were won by Najla Bartette and Raj Janardhan. Congratulations to all prize winners and a special thank you to everyone who played in the event and helped make it one of the special dates in our tournament calendar.
COMPETITION RESULTS SOFITEL MEDAL Monday 12th December 2016

nspired by the recent Omega Dubai Ladies Masters 57 ladies took to the Faldo course for the December Medal sponsored by Sofitel, Dubai Jumeirah Beach. Congratulations to low handicapper Monica Palao who shot the lowest score of the day, a net 68 to win A division by three strokes. Runner-up in Silver A Division was Fiona Berry with a score of net 71 which was shared with our Lady Captain Maura Duggan. Fiona claimed second place after a better back three hole card count-back. The best gross score of the day was won by Mimi Hosking with a score of 79. In Silver B Division our winner was Margaret Breen with a winning score of net 71 following a card count-back with runner-up Hilary Wynter who also scored a net 71. Jane Vail was the winner of Bronze Division with a net 71. Our prize winners will now enjoy some fantastic hospitality courtesy of our Medal sponsors Sofitel, Dubai Jumeirah Beach.
The following day the ladies returned to Le Classique dressed in all their festive finery for a traditional Christmas lunch. The surprise visit of a ‘Welsh’ Santa and Nishanthi leading the carol singers provided great light entertainment. A small raffle for the Junior Colleagues Fund and prize giving for the Christmas Scramble winners presented, by LET player Sophie Walker, ensured a fun-filled afternoon.
Finally, the ladies headed over to the Dubai Creek on 19th to take part in their Christmas scramble followed by lunch in Legends. Phew, no wonder December was a blur.

Plans are well underway for a short golfing trip to Ras Al Khaimah, to the Hilton Al Hamra Beach & Golf Resort from Wednesday 8th to Friday 10th February. We have been given a great rate from the Hilton and will enjoy two rounds of golf on Al Hamra golf course which is in excellent condition after recently hosting the final event of the Challenge Tour. December was a whirlwind month the last Medal of 2016 was held on the Faldo on the 12th December, the colleagues/members’ Scramble on 13th, the Mixed Christmas Scramble on 17th, plus the beautiful wedding celebrations for Tania Sangani at Atlantis Hotel later that same night.

On the Friday, there was a call on the radio for a referee to go to Fairway 10, I happened to be the nearest so I headed over. It turned out to be a fellow ‘Welshy’ Lydia Hall, whom I know very well. Also, caddying for Lydia was a good friend of mine and MENA Tour player Paul Docherty. Her ball was lying in the sandy waste area just off the fairway; inches ahead of her ball was a loose impediment….or was it? A fairly long branch had fallen off a tree but had been compressed into the sand/ground. Lydia was unsure if she was entitled to move the branch because 75% of it appeared to be quite deep in the sand and possibly, solidly embedded. Despite some friendly back chat from her caddy, it was decided that she could not move this branch, the reason being that when a loose impediment is solidly embedded in the ground it loses its status as it is no longer ‘loose’. Lydia advanced the ball down the fairway and thankfully made her par Again on that Friday afternoon, as the nearest referee, I was called to green 12. As I was driving there I could see it was the TV group of Charley Hull, Suzanne Petterson and Gwladys Nocera. Hull had ACCIDENTALLY dropped her ball marker onto her ball and she thought it had only oscillated, but when she returned to address the ball, the alignment line on her ball was pointing further to the right which raised the concern of whether her ball had actually moved, If so, a one stroke penalty would have applied and she would have had to replace the ball. After discussing it with the player we agreed that the ball hadn’t actually moved off its spot and here are the two main reason why. 1. A ball is only deemed to have moved if it leaves its position and comes to rest in a NEW place. 2. As the line on her ball was still very much on top of the ball, the opinion was taken that the ball had only rotated on the same spot or on the same dimple which caused the line to point further right, it hadn’t actually rolled anywhere!

Within minutes of leaving the green I was sent a photo as the ruling had been live on TV. Instantly I panicked and wanted to know if the commentators, who would have had the luxury of a slow motion replay, SAW what I THOUGHT had happened. Apparently they did which confirmed that the correct decision was made…panic over!!!
PLEASE NOTE: Emirates Golf Club will be adopting the NEW local rule recently announced by the R&A and the USGA that avoids any penalties if a ball is ACCIDENTALLY moved by a player on the putting green. This will take effect from January 1st 2017. Marc played at a very high standard on the JGTO tour, Asian Tour, Canadian PGA, Nationwide Tour and Golden Bear Tour event in US, Canada, Japan and South Asia. He finished second in his year on the California Professional Tour. Marc then turned his attention to teaching and he has taught over 20,000 hours to all types of students all over the world. He has had experience as a Club Manager and Head Golf Professional for last ten years in Asia. Athina Belivanis - Membership Services Manager Athina, who originates from Greece brings with her plenty of experience in the role of Membership Manager. Athina graduated with a B.S. in Marketing from State University in New York joins us from her previous role as Membership & PR Manager at Al Badia Golf Club, Dubai. She has held other roles in Dubai as Membership Manager at Capital Club as well as Marketing Executive for Allied Enterprises. Athina has spent most of her life living and working in Greece and Germany which has given her the opportunity to develop her language skills.

his was the 11th staging of the Omega Dubai Ladies Masters and my 10th as Superintendent. Over the years we have learned so much! Most of what we have learned has come through hard lessons, in other words things that simply have not worked and where we have had to adjust to make improvements. It’s sometimes good to reflect on this and look at the growth that has been made. Overseeding of greens used to be a common trend/ practice for us and whilst we produced pretty good greens back then, it was the 2008 Ladies Masters when the overseeded greens ‘cooked’ on us and we had less than desirable looking surfaces for the event. It made us re-look at our strategies, in particular with us hosting our two events in such close proximity to each other. We needed to go back in after the event and seed all the greens again prior to the 2009 Omega Dubai Desert Classic which resulted in good grass coverage, but greens that were just not up to the high standards we set for ourselves year on year. It was after the 2009 Desert Classic that we started discussing the need to overseed greens at all. It was a collective decision based on good research and for the 2009 ODLM and 2010 ODDC we prepared our greens surfaces minus the seed, for the first time in 10 years and, to this day, we continue to follow the same formula. The biggest advantage to this decision was undoubtedly the benefit to our membership with not having to go through the pure golfing season with greens that were being grown in, but instead, enjoying pure surfaces throughout the year. We have also adjusted our seeding rates and areas of application throughout the golf course. Our aim is to do what is required to produce the best looking golf

course for our season that is playing as firmly as it possibly can. By overseeding we need to keep the seed moist and this in turn creates a softer golf course. Less seed in the canopy enables us to produce a firmer course a lot sooner after the overseeding process. The weather patterns are clearly shifting and this year we have once again noticed that it really is not until after the Omega Dubai Ladies Masters that we get our first ‘cool’ spell. This year, we have had to top up some of our rough areas with additional seed, as well as some of our approaches, as it was simply too warm and our Bermuda came back strong in places. It begs the question....
I am also proud to say that the Majlis was voted for by the public as the best golf course over AED 500 in the 2016 MEGA Awards held earlier this month. Club Manager Barney Coleman took time out of his schedule to personally come up to our workshop and thank the team for their hard work and efforts, and present them with the certificate and trophy that he collected on behalf of the Club. Nice touch of class from Barney that has not gone unnoticed by this team for sure!

Hope you all get to observe more birds in 2017! One of the birds often noticed easily owing to its distinctive long beak and colourful wings, the Hoopoe, is our bird of the month. These birds are quite widespread in the Eurasian region including the Middle East; they were considered sacred by Ancient Egyptians and hence appear in the hieroglyphics in Egypt.
It terms of lessons learned, besides not overseeding greens, we also know that once the Omega Dubai Ladies Masters is finished, we have greens that are pure and, instead
of taking our foot of the pedal between events, it is now more a case of staying on top of what was produced by keeping our moisture management on point and, by default. improving the firmness of our greens right through. I think you will all have noticed that this season in particular, the greens surfaces are firmer and truer than in years past.

Hoopoes spend much more time on the ground than in flight. Their usual habitats are woodlands, olive and palm groves, parks, gardens and open wooded areas in winter and they are usually seen to nest in holes within trees or ruin. The diet of the hoopoe includes many species considered by humans to be pests, such as the pupae of moth, a damaging forest pest and, for this reason, the species is afforded protection under the law in many countries. Their long beaks help these birds to dig out worms and they are extremely skilled at finding worms from under the ground. Hoopoes are monogamous, although the bonding apparently only lasts for a single season, and is territorial - the male calls frequently to advertise his ownership of the territory. Chases and fights between rival males (and sometimes females) are common and can be brutal. Birds will try to stab rivals with their bills, and individuals are occasionally blinded in fights. At Emirates Golf Club, these birds can be seen on the Faldo and Majlis courses. They are easily spotted, usually alone, near the non-grassy roughs early morning time and are rarely missed owing to their distinctive appearance.

The weekend cancellation period of 48 hours is actively enforced and constant offenders are now also monitored. It is impossible to book on short notice? This is correct particularly for weekends as your fellow members will have booked up to 10 days in advance. Online booking should open later than 6.00am. In the past we have had a number of members mention not to move later due to conflict with school, work and other commitments.
It is difficult to get a tee time on the Majlis course on the weekends.
Why don’t you show all the tee times and players on the online booking system.
The Majlis course is more popular than the Faldo. As our membership capacity is based on a 36-hole offering, during peak months, there will be members who are unable to secure a tee time on the Majlis course and play on the Faldo instead. For example, if 300 members wish to play the Majlis on a Friday with only 200 slots available then it goes without saying 100 members will miss out on a Majlis game.
This is possible but impractical. On-line booking was originally introduced to counteract the queuing system whereby members lined up in person to book popular weekend times. The main frustration surrounding online booking is for Fridays and Saturdays 10 days in advance. Over 40 tee times can be booked in less than five minutes, showing all the times and the names booked would impact the speed and efficiency of the system. By the time the screen shows all the times and your fellow members names it would have already changed as it is in constant transition. Once you consider the screen, it will be out dated by the time you are ready to book. This is also the reason why we are showing and blocking one tee time as opposed to showing six tee times in the past.
Member play on the Majlis course on weekends (Friday/Saturday) for the past two season, from 1st October 2014 to 31st May 2016, is 85% with another 10% member guest rounds. This is largely due to a Club policy adopted in December 2013 that Friday and Saturday tee times were allocated to members and their guests in peak season periods ensuring as many tee times are available as possible for members at the weekends, reflected in the Majlis statistic above. Visitors have more rights; members should have priority at weekends! Members have a 10 day booking window. Nonmembers (e.g. through Tour Operators) are able to book a specific allocation of tee times in advance, other visitors including Emirates Golf Federation members may book seven days in advance. Also note, as above, there has been no advanced visitor allocation on the weekends since December 2013 (prior to this, six tee times were reserved for visitors on a weekend day) Still, because many non-members are seen at the weekend, there is a perception that certain individuals have preferred booking rights. The only non-members, particularly on the Majlis course, will be members’ guests. Certain members do have preferred booking rights as below: • Current Captains and Vice-Captains may book 14 days in advance • Past Captains may book 14 days in advance on six occasions during the season • Any member competing in a matchplay competition may book 11 days in advance Tee times are held back/blocked from members on weekends. The only time this happens is for member/ open tournaments. There are occasions, if the entries are lower than expected, that times are released back to members post the 10-day booking window. When this occurs, members on the waitlist are contacted first. Many cancellations give the impression that times are held back, this is not the case.
Majlis course is closed for corporate events. A number of corporate events are staged on weekdays, generally a 1.00pm shotgun start. No corporate events are hosted on weekends. Thursday is a popular afternoon but we generally host only two corporate events per month on the Majlis on a Thursday. There are not enough member lockers and inadequate space for member guests to change in the visitor area. The male locker room does need to be increased in size. Why do wild card holders have to show the card at check-in? All wild card usage needs to be controlled. The only way the Club is certain that an individual has been given permission to use a Wild Card is that they have it on them in person. It also ensures only one card is used per day and if your guest shows the card in the F&B outlet then discount is applicable so a benefit to your client/guest. Fewer shotgun starts. Particularly during peak season when daylight hours are short, shotgun starts maximise the capacity of the Majlis course. This is essential due to the main complaint of poor availability of the Majlis at weekends. Whenever we host an afternoon member or guest tournament we have a morning shotgun preceding it. A two-tee start prior to an afternoon weekday shotgun is another option. This will give members the option of teeing off between 6:40am-8:20am as opposed to 8.00am. Members’ Consultative Committee Action Points since October 2016: • New Spike Bar furniture arrived • New carpets for locker rooms, Spike Bar and
Staircase to be installed very soon • Members’ Zone to house a F&B section by Chef Nicholas to improve communication • Tournament cancellations can now be done on-line • Accurate distance markers have been put in place on the Majlis course to improve pace of play during walking season and caddie/bag carrier service • Hole 13 Faldo – this hole will revert back to a popular Par 5, once a mature canopy of trees and additional netting is in place (protecting the villas from stray golf balls). • Spike Bar dress code – relaxation and clarity. For gentlemen in the main Spike Bar (carpeted area and raised bar) - collarless T-shirts are NOT acceptable. In the Spike Bar lobby and Spike Bar Patio round neck t-shirts are permitted. Sleeveless T-shirts (singlets) are not acceptable anywhere • Extension of Le Classique reward vouchers to three months’ validity • New house wines • Re-alignment of handicap calculation for low handicappers, all games now counting • Up-grade of on-course toilets including those by club repair centre • Email HTML referencing upcoming tournaments in next six weeks • Live breakfast station on the driving range to start from 6th January • Introduction of Scratch Matchplay Championship • Laser reflectors on all pin flags • Collection of walking players on Majlis to be provided with two-seater carts on finishing holes during shotgun format

Henrik Stenson, the reigning Open and Race to Dubai Champion, was recently named The 2016 European Tour Golfer of the Year and received the prestigious annual award for the second time in four years. Stenson has enjoyed a magnificent 12 months on the global stage, winning the BMW International Open in June before lifting the Claret Jug less than a month later at The 145th Open Championship, becoming the first Swedish man to win a Major Championship. His epic battle with Phil Mickelson at Royal Troon will go down as one of the greatest duels in golfing history, with Stenson producing a stunning closing 63 - the joint lowest final round in a Major by a champion – to win by three shots, breaking the record low score of a Major Championship with a winning total of 20 under par 264.

Stenson finished his 2016 season leading the Race to Dubai after his runner-up finish in the WGC-HSBC Champions in China and becoming the European Tour Number One.

Blomqvist used her seven iron to ace the 147-yard par-3 hole, becoming the second professional after Tania Elosegui of Spain to achieve the feat on this challenging hole and the sixth overall to join the hole-in-one club at the Majlis course since the inception of the season-ending Ladies European Tour event.

Play was suspended at 10.30am after Zechmann, who was on the bag of French golfer Anne-Lise Caudal, collapsed on the 13th fairway of the Majlis Course. After being immediately attended to by the on-site medical team, Zechmann was taken to hospital. He was later pronounced dead following a suspected heart attack. Ladies European Tour CEO Ivan Khodabakhsh commented: “Everyone at the Ladies European Tour is extremely shocked and saddened today by this sudden death and therefore we have taken the decision to suspend first round play as a mark of respect. “On behalf of our membership, we offer heartfelt condolences to Mr Zechmann’s family and loved ones.” Mohamed Juma Buamaim, vice chairman and CEO of golf in DUBAi said: “We are deeply saddened by the sudden passing of Mr Zechmann. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family at this difficult time. May his soul rest in peace.”

On day one Paige scored 77…after a challenging start she settled into the round well, finishing strongly with par, birdie, par (7th, 8th, 9th). On day two Paige scored 80…firm and windy conditions in the afternoon made the challenge several shots harder but she made lots of quality approach shots with the afternoon conditions making distance control very challenging. By and large, a positive week for Paige from the perspective of learning strengths and weaknesses under tournament conditions and establishing a winter training programme in preparation for 2017. Paige really enjoyed the golf course and the many cool experiences Dubai has to offer. I’m sure she will return to Emirates Golf Club very soon!

t was a pleasure to caddy for teenage sensation Muni He during this years Omega Dubai Ladies Masters.
Muni was born in Chengdu, China and has lived in LA California for the last five years. At only 17 she is ranked as the number one Chinese amateur and has competed in several LPGA events including this year’s women’s US Open were she held the first round lead and finished a spectacular tied 13th for the week. She is a talented golfer indeed with a very bright future ahead. Her best friend Shanshan Feng and Omega Dubai Ladies Masters specialist with four wins from her last five appearances is someone Muni looks up to and she hopes to make an Olympic appearance with Shanshan in four years’ time. Muni’s ability and mature approach to the game is exceptional and from watching the way she conducts her practice sessions and manages herself on the course she will definitely go far in the game. We trust she gets an invitation to play again next year and I’m sure she’ll make an impact in the Professional game after she graduates in four years’ time.

As a coach, it was remarkable to watch ShanShan throughout the week, both on and off course- three performance qualities stood out for me - preparation, technique and superior mental skills. Not sure about the timing of our arrival in today’s Europe but then again, who could have predicted this when we bought our place 17 years ago. In January I will do my last rotation with Airbus in Korea and I will then fully retire. It’s been wonderful to have been able to finish my career working for Airbus and teaching on the A-380. We still have an apartment in Dubai and will visit regularly to see the family and friends. Concessional
