Dear Friends of the Chorus,
Welcome to the Jacksonville Children’s Chorus’ 15th Annual “Lift Ev’ry Voice & Sing” concert! We are honored to be presenting this concert at the beautiful Hendricks Avenue Baptist Church (HAB). The Jacksonville Children’s Chorus (JCC) is grateful for our continued partnership with HAB and for the generous sponsors of today’s performance, The Jacksonville Transportation Authority, VyStar Credit Union, and Florida State College of Jacksonville. This season brings to fruition the rewards of years of hard work and perseverance as we celebrate the first anniversary of moving into our headquarters in downtown Jacksonville. All of the JCC staff, singers, and friends extend a huge thank you to VyStar Credit Union for making this dream come true.
Each year we invite a choir from a Historically Black College or University to join us for the "Lift Ev'ry Voice & Sing" concert event. This year, the JCC is thrilled to welcome back the Tuskegee University "Golden Voices" Concert Choir as guest artists for today's concert.
The repertoire of today’s concert invites both our singers and our audience to contemplate the importance of understanding and relating to others, regardless of their circumstances. We hope that we can collectively draw lessons from past adversity and embrace the significance of maintaining hope and resilience in the face of contemporary challenges. As Langston Hughes urges us in his poem "Dreams" ,
“Hold fast to dreams
For if dreams die
Life is a broken-winged bird
That cannot fly.”
Our concert starts with the performance of “Lift Every Voice and Sing”. This national treasure is a beloved poem and song penned by Harlem Renaissance writer, James Weldon Johnson, and set to music by his brother, J. Rosamond Johnson. The Johnson brothers were born and spent their early years in Jacksonville, Florida. It is here in Jacksonville that “Lift Every Voice and Sing” was written and first performed by a choir of 500 schoolchildren at the Stanton School. Since first performed in 1900, this song has influenced the culture of our community and nation. It is a continuing source of comfort and strength for those in the ongoing fight for social justice and an inspiration to the myriad of artists who have performed the song and those who have heard it sung. We ask that you will stand to witness our choirs singing this beautiful hymn—one voice reaching toward a world that never stops respecting, welcoming, and honoring all people.
With deepest gratitude, Darren

In 1995, several colleagues at Jacksonville University met to discuss the possibility of making a shared dream come true. Local conductor Jim Taylor, with guidance from then-University President Dr. Frances B. Kinne and vocal conductor Dr. Jon Carlson, developed the framework for a Jacksonville University Children’s Chorus. The program’s first choir served 16 children, but through word of mouth, the program grew, and in 1998, Taylor and a brand-new Board of Directors worked to reorganize it into The Jacksonville Children’s Chorus (JCC).
Though there were pitfalls, and even moments when the fledgling organization almost ceased to exist, the shared
enthusiasm of children, parents, and staff carried it forward. In 2006, Darren Dailey, Artistic Director of the Boston Children’s Chorus, was recruited to become the Artistic and Executive Director of the JCC. Today the Jacksonville Children’s Chorus is a national leader in music education and performance.
Since its inaugural season in 1995, The Chorus has grown to serve as many as 1,000 children annually, ages 18 months to 18 years. These gifted young singers represent not only 180 of our local schools, but also extend to 14 counties of Northeast Florida and Southeast Georgia. The Chorus draws from diverse racial, religious, and socio-economic backgrounds, transcending differences and emphasizing similarities and common goals.

Regarded as one of the First Coast’s most prolific technology leaders, Melissa Fulmore-Hardwick has dedicated her more than 25-year career to driving change and merging innovative technology solutions with collaboration-based leadership. Her initiatives have skyrocketed operational efficiency, reduced the IT footprint, and bridged exciting technologies with operational objectives.
Melissa credits much of her success to the teams she has recruited and cultivated over the years. Powered by knowledge and ideas, these teams have been integral in the projects upon which Melissa has built her career from complex cloud strategies to groundbreaking Agile-based development initiatives.
Melissa started off by serving in the U.S. Army as a Commissioned Officer and later launched her career as an accountant. It was this early experience that instilled a respect for standardized processes. She soon discovered how technology can enhance these processes and improve the world around us. Melissa then shifted to IT and moved up the ranks as Oracle consultant, change management leader and then business applications director, while also developing as a leader to motivated teams, both on-site and remote.
Today, Melissa continues her passion for technology as a CIO for The CSI Companies in Jacksonville, Florida.
Her industry experience has spanned financial, retail and manufacturing, healthcare, hospitality, aerospace, marketing, and services industries, as well as the U.S. Federal Government.
Melissa is recognized as a refreshingly personable and engaging leader whether she is chatting with an entrylevel developer or addressing a boardroom of executives. She is a prominent presenter, having served as keynote speaker and panelist for numerous Northeast Florida trade organizations and charities.
She holds a B.S. in accounting from the University of South Florida and an Executive MBA from Jacksonville University.
Giving back to the community helps Melissa to create balance, inspire young people and champion emerging talent. She is the Founder of recently launched Brown Girls in the Boardroom, Inc and maintains several board positions, hosts workshops to help young women get excited about their career and helps underserved youth throughout Northeast Florida. Melissa is a devoted member and leader in her church.
When she is not working to make a difference in the world, Melissa can be found engaging her husband and adventurous, super-hero son or taking in a few minutes of meditation.
Melissa learned at an early age what it means to be a Servant Leader and her service to the community is welldemonstrated through the various organizations in which she is a part of.

The Tuskegee Choir is an organization steeped in more than a century of pride and the richest of choral traditions. Since its inception, the Tuskegee Choir has served as an artistic model while carving its place in American history. The school choir was developed in 1886 because Dr. Washington had determined that the Institute needed a group of singers who could lead vesper services and sing for special campus occasions.
A new era began for the Tuskegee Choir in 1930 under its most renowned director and educator William L.Dawson, the “Dean of African-American Choral Composers”. His tenure was marked by performances for the grand opening of Radio City Music Hall, for United States presidents (Herbert Hoover and president-elect Franklin D. Roosevelt), at Constitution Hall in Washington, D.C., and for a host of television and radio programs.
The Tuskegee Choir has since appeared at Carnegie Hall, has been invited to the National Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony (1962) by President John F. Kennedy, and the National Prayer Breakfast (1994) and the White House (1997) by President William J. Clinton.
On January 18, 2015, in celebration of the release of the movie Selma, the choir was invited to sing the Grammy Award winning song “Glory” with John Legend and Common on the Edmund Pettus Bridge.
The Tuskegee University Golden Voices Concert Choir continues its mission of campus service and ambassadorship through leadership at weekly AllUniversity Worship Services and appearances in the community and across the nation. The Choir tours annually. The 2012 Northeastern tour included a March 1 performance at the United negro College Fund banquet in New York. The choir also returned to the Lincoln Center during that tour, marking the fortieth anniversary of its 1972 performance there as the first all- black choir to do so. In 2018 the Tuskegee Choir toured Ontario, Canada.
The choir’s 2020 Southwest Spring Tour concluded just as the COVID-19 Pandemic shutdowns began. After a twoyear hiatus, we are happy to be touring again. Our 2023 tour included Indianapolis, IN, Cincinnati, OH, and Detroit, MI.The choir also repeated its 2018 Ontario, Canada tour with concerts in London, Toronto, Kingston, and Ottawa.

President & Artistic Director
Darren Dailey came to Jacksonville in 2006 and since then has been shaping The Jacksonville Children’s Chorus into a world-class organization. Under his artistic leadership, The Chorus has grown to serve over 1,000 First Coast children annually with five core performance choirs, multiple satellite rehearsal locations, and outreach throughout the region.
A nationally recognized clinician and conductor, Mr. Dailey has served as guest conductor in Carnegie Hall and Avery Fisher Hall at Lincoln Center and the ACDA Honor Choir in Seattle. He has presented workshops for the National Association of Pastoral Musicians, Organization of Kodály Educators, American Choral Directors Association, and Music Educator’s National Conference. As the founding artistic director of the Boston Children’s Chorus, Mr. Dailey and his chorus performed at the 2004 Democratic Convention, and appeared as the host chorus on the television special, “Raising the Roof: A Celebration of the Life of Martin Luther King, Jr. in Song,” broadcast nationally on WGN, and performed internationally in Japan. He is the 2014 recipient of the Reinhold ard and currently serves on the Jacksonville University Linda Berry Stein College of Fine Arts Advisory Board. Mr. Dailey was honored in 2017 by Galaxy Music to create a Choral Series specifically for children’s voices. Under his leadership, the JCC received the 2017 Diversity and Inclusion Award for the State of Florida.
Mr. Dailey has produced four recordings: “Come and Rejoice” (Cantate), “Sing!” (Boston Children’s Chorus) and “Voices for Voices” (Jacksonville Children’s Chorus). His work may also be heard on “A Boston Christmas” (Back Bay Chorale), “Building Bridges” (Mystic Chorale) and “Amani Celebration,” a limited-edition compact disc of holiday songs from 15 children’s choirs to benefit African children who have been orphaned because of the HIV/ AIDS epidemic.
In 2019, Mr. Dailey was honored with the distinguished Alumni Merit Award by Westminster Choir College. In 2020, Chorus America presented Darren with the Brazeal Wayne Dennard Award in recognition of his dedication to diversity and his contributions to the African American Choral Tradition. The Jacksonville Children's Chorus, under Darren Dailey's direction, achieved significant recognition in 2022, winning the American Prize for Choral Performance. Furthermore, in the same year, the ensemble was bestowed with the David C. Brotemarkle Award for their outstanding presentation of 'Songs of the Sunshine State.'
Mr. Dailey received a Bachelor of Music Education degree with a concentration in Voice from Westminster Choir College and a Master of Music Education in Choral Conducting from Appalachian State University’s Hayes School of Music.
