It is this first experience of God as my home that has really never left me. No matter how many Vestry meetings I run, no matter how many disagreements I manage or people I disappoint, I have always found that my home is here, in the church. It is the place that I come to for peace. In this place, God reorients me and inspires me even to this day. No matter how hard my week has been, when I join you in worship on Sundays, I find my way home again.

Sometimes, I come early and just sit alone in the Sanctuary. The beauty stills my soul.

The quiet mends my mind. I find that I am able to return to my breath and remember that although the world seems so broken and chaotic and I feel so lost at times, that God is here with me. Jesus still holds us in his loving arms and will never let us go.

Our Cathedral is a beacon of hope in this city. We are a refuge and a place of safety for people from all walks of life. It is our home. And we must commit to caring for this home with our financial resources as well as our time. Our beautiful campus is an architectural jewel, and it is no small feat to care for it well and to fill it with ministries.

We need your help to continue to love and nurture this our sacred home.

In the pages to come, you will find reflections on what it means to rest in the home that is our Cathedral, our community, our place of refuge and renewal. In this space, we share our life in Christ. And it is good.

W H AT ’ S I N A H O M E ? by the Rev. Mark Anderson

M Y F A M I L Y M O V E D A R O U N D A B I T W H E N I W A S Y O U N G . I was

born in California, lived in Texas, and moved to Florida before I was in third grade.

However, the constant bedroom from my childhood was in my grandmother’s little home – a cottage near the beach in rural Massachusetts. Every summer my family would drive north on I-95 to spend a month with my grandmother and cousins. When we turned off the highway, and I began to see more trees and smell the seaweed that had washed up on the beach, a sense of joy washed over me. I knew I was almost home.

Do you remember returning home from camp and walking into your bedroom? Or returning to Jacksonville after a long trip, and breathing a sigh of relief knowing you were home? Our homes are so much more than brick and mortar. Home is a place of love, of safety, and of rest. And in a sense, our church is no different – it is our spiritual home. Our church home is more than just stones and stained glass. It’s a place to set down our burdens.

When we go home, we unburden ourselves of the things we have been carrying around all day. The minute I walk in the door, I place my wallet and keys on a small table near the front door. Maybe you have a place for your purse, or backpack, or umbrella.

Many of us also work to set down our emotional burdens at the front door. In seminary, I spent a summer working as a chaplain in the Emergency Room and the Intensive Care Unit of a major New York hospital. In the Intensive Care Unit there was a deep awareness of mortality. The Emergency Room was defined by uncertainty and chaos.

While this ministry was deeply meaningful, it was emotionally demanding. At the end of the day, I almost always chose to walk home despite the stifling heat. I wanted time to set aside the challenges of the day so I could walk into my apartment with a clear head.

Home is a place where we set aside our burdens.

And that’s exactly what we can do at church. Before entering the nave, you will walk through a small room called a Narthex. It’s not just a room to pass through, but a place to begin putting down your burdens, both physical (we have an umbrella basket – where you can place one of your burdens) and emotional. Beyond the physical places to lay down burdens, the Book of Common Prayer calls us to lay down our mental burdens as we gather for worship. It suggests a prayer before worship: 6

And Jesus himself was very clear:

The moment you walk in the door of the Cathedral, an usher is there to welcome you.

Everyone in the congregation is seated in a place where they will see the choir or other members of the congregation. Even the architecture of our church communicates the message that we are gathered as sisters and brothers in Christ. We are not individual spectators; we are part of a community. Paul underscores the unifying power of God’s love, explaining: “There is no longer Jew or Greek, there is no longer slave or free, there is no longer male and female; for all of you are one in Christ Jesus.” (Galatians 3:28, NRSV) Our community stretches beyond this one city block and this one hour on Sunday morning. Lay Eucharistic Visitors and clergy bring communion to people who are homebound or in the hospital throughout the week. People gather by Zoom or in person to pray, remembering that Jesus said that when two or three were gathered in his name, he would be in the midst of them.

We acknowledge the honor of our relationship with others when we gather for worship.

We are called to welcome those around us into our community. We are called to share God’s love with those around us. Just as our homes are places where we gather with people we love, the church is also a place to participate in this community of love.

When we gather at St. John’s Cathedral, our spiritual home, we are surrounded by images of our spiritual relatives, just as most of us have our familial relatives’ images around us in our homes. When we worship at St. John’s Cathedral, we are surrounded by stained glass depicting the lives of those who preceded us in our pilgrimage of faith.

We see images of disciples, apostles, and great saints of the church. These images recount the stories of our faith and remind us of the lessons that guide our lives today.

However, our connections with our families are not only conveyed through images, but also stories. Although my wife never met my grandmother, I have told her countless stories about my grandmother. These stories convey my grandmother’s personality and values. Similarly, we hear the stories of our spiritual forebearers as we read the Bible Moses hearing God at the burning bush, the disciples bringing their squabbles to Jesus for resolution, Paul and his great missionary journeys. When you hear these, remember that you are hearing the stories of our family.

And just as our home is a place of rest and refreshment, equipping us for the day ahead, our church home prepares us to go out and serve the world in Christ’s name, rested and refreshed. If we lived in the way that God intended, how would we spend our days?

Would we spend all our time in prayer and meditation? Would we simply relax? When Adam and Eve were in the Garden of Eden, did God create a TV and share his Netflix password with them? Absolutely not! God gave Adam and Eve work and responsibility: they were instructed to tend the garden.

You and I also have work to complete, and our time in church should equip us for these ministries. In the back of the Book of Common Prayer, there is a set of questions and answers about the fundamentals of our faith. One asks, “Who are the ministers of the church?” The answer? “The Ministers of the church are the lay people, bishops, priest, and deacons.” Lay people are listed first.

When our church service reaches the Dismissal, the Deacon doesn’t say: “If you’re in the mood, go in peace to love and serve the Lord.” We are not given conditional instructions. We are given a command. We have work to do: to love and serve.

Just like our homes, St. John’s is a place of safety – to lay down our burdens and be refreshed; a place where people gather in community; a place to discover our roots – and learn the wisdom of the ages; a place to go out in faith and do the work God has given to us.

I N 1 9 5 1 , S T . J O H N ’ S B E C A M E T H E C A T H E D R A L C H U R C H for the

Episcopal Diocese of Florida, but not all things went well during the 1950s. The number of church members remained largely the same-around 1000 or so. The Keystone Home for Boys was no longer financially sustainable and closed in 1953 leaving the church owning a beautiful tract on the east bank of the St. Johns River which ultimately became home to Episcopal School of Jacksonville. Jim Crow continued to be a powerful force affecting Jacksonville—Axe Handle Saturday would occur on August 27, 1960 as a number of African-Americans would be beaten in downtown Jacksonville, only blocks from St. John’s, in their attempt to integrate lunch counters in the city. The parish had 3 deans during the 1950s, the last one Charles McGavern died in a tragic airplane crash after serving only a few months as dean.

Into all this came Robert Ray Parks who served as the 4th dean of St. John’s Cathedral from 1961 until 1971, when he left to become rector of Trinity Church Wall Street in New York City. He described St. John’s as “a dying congregation in a slum-ridden area of town and (was) not involved with the deeds of the community.” Dean Parks surveyed the “old congregation” which had “a significant number of elderly persons” and asked whether they wanted to abandon downtown and relocate to a suburban site, likely the old Keystone Home location. The vestry voted to stay, and the modern history of the Cathedral ensued.

Once St. John’s decided to stay in the core city, Dean Parks and the church set about remaking the core and “replacing a rotten slum of the city.” The foci of the renewal plans was housing, particularly for seniors and low-income people, health and rehabilitation services, and education. The projects included: • t wo high-rise apartment buildings (Cathedral Towers and Cathedral Townhouse) which aggregated 457 units for congregate communal living for the elderly, and • a 120-bed hospital which was, at the time, the only rehabilitation facility in Northeast Florida, and • a volunteer run health service on Florida Avenue in East Jacksonville designed to provide medical services for disadvantaged persons, and • J acksonville Episcopal High School, now Episcopal School of Jacksonville, located on the site of the former Keystone Home “as a school of tomorrow, because the young people attending the high school will be sitting in the decision-making seats in their time, and will have the philosophical commitment to make the right decisions”, and • a nonprofit entity known as Urban Jax Inc. to improve housing for residents of core city slum areas.

In a real sense, all of this was a home improvement project designed to meet many needs of people, whether parishioners or not, and to be a welcoming, inclusive sacred space.

Since that time, each dean of the Cathedral has built upon the work started by Dean Parks and made our spiritual home ever more inclusive.

As Dean Parks noted: “Christians are committed to change. We are change agents. The commission of the church is to go out and change the world until the Kingdom has come on earth.”

Dean Parks, a native of Ty Ty, Georgia, came to the ministry after a career as a fighter pilot in World War II. Near the end of the war, his plane crashed, and his spine was severely damaged. He was told it was unlikely he would ever walk again, so he turned to prayer and was healed. “It was about as direct a personal religious experience as a person can have,” Parks told the New York Times in 1972 when he was called to be rector at Trinity Church Wall Street.

THE RED WING CHURCH

There is a tractor in the doorway of a church in Red Wing, Nebraska, in a coat of mud and straw that drags the floor.

A broken plow sprawls beggar like behind it on some planks that make a sort of roadway up the steps.

The steeple’s gone. A black tar paper scar that lightning might have made replaces it.

They’ve taken it down to change the house of God to Homer Johnson’s barn, but it’s still a church with clumps of tiger lilies in the grass.

And one of those boxlike, glassed-in signs that give the sermon’s topic (reading now a bird’s nest and a little broken glass).

The good works of the Lord are all around: The steeple top is standing in a garden just up the alley; it’s a hen house now: Fat leghorns gossip at its crowded door.

Pews stretch on porches up and down the street, The stained-glass windows style the mayor’s house And the bell’s atop the firehouse in the square.

The cross is only God knows where.

points in the structures, their form and their function. Even before that, however, is an important point: “what is the seed of the thing?” Church spaces house a germinal thing, a central soil from which growth emerges; everything is in relation to that.

What is the seed of the thing in these two different worship spaces? What is meant to grow here and how is that accomplished? How is growth nurtured? What makes these living spaces? Where is the power located or we might say where can we see the Holy? Is it possible to map the flow of energy?

What are the theologies of these spaces? How is the Holy made manifest?

How does the ‘outside world’ interpenetrate? Or is it a thing apart?

How does the space invite contemplation? But not communication?

Does one expect to receive or to offer oneself? Or both?

Are the arts included in the space merely wallpaper?

How does stained glass become three dimensional and affect the gathered community?

“Christian worship is not primarily a gathering of the like-minded (a club). It is a gathering of human bodies to be with one another in the acknowledgment that human existence originates in and is drawn toward Love. Worship is primarily a response in kind to Love, the origin, center, and goal of life.” The church space must draw attention and affection. Religion without artistic images is quantitatively impoverished; if churches relinquish life orienting images, then the culture will provide values, attitudes, and behaviors. from Margaret Miles, Image as Insight.

We pay attention to entry points, to central locations, to the ways in which action is brought to us or to the ways we move. How do our bodies orient themselves to worship?

Where is our focus….in the chapel space we face each other (incarnation in the body of Christ). In our cathedral nave our bodies are oriented to the altar where Jesus is made present, incarnate in the Eucharist. Which points of beauty draw your eye in either space? How do our entry and our exit enable faith development? Are we meant to be quiet or to connect? Is that affected by the structure of the space?

Some churches prioritize the Word, so pulpits are the most prominent. Some spaces emphasize the dome of heaven and earth or the celestial beings or the Creation and the Garden of Eden. Some forms emphasize solidity and endurance; some are more simple, echoing the early Christian patterns of meeting in homes with spaces for children and resting rocking chairs. Some feature mission as a gathering place for food donations, for notice boards, for greeting others. Some chapels are shaped for singing such as monasteries. Some prominently feature the organ, pipes and choir and the principal musician.

How does the church space tell us that the “kingdom of heaven is at hand?” How does it tell us that we are a part of a larger story? How do the central actors in the liturgy 15

communicate what is of ultimate value? Brian Wren once said that there are at least five places where he can locate the holy in a church. What would you say those locations are?

What might be gained from sitting in a different place in the church? In the transepts rather than the nave? In the front of the pews or at the greatest distance? Do you always sit with the same people? Do you attend only one worship space, or do you visit and compare? Can you share one of your experiences when you were drawn to worship well?

Describe if you can what happened to you. Do you expect to be met by the Holy?

Did you know that the BCP has specific prayers for worship?

We speak about reading a space but how does the space read you?

“I shall take a building, a building shaped like a cross, furnished neither for habitation or for defense. I shall multiply this building by a thousand, by ten thousand, by a hundred thousand. It may be as small as a single room; it may soar into the sky. It may be old or it may be new; it may be plain or it may be rich; it may be of stone or it may be of wood or it may be of brick or of mud. This building is in the heart of cities and it is in the wild places of earth. It is on islands and in deserts and upon mountains. The walls and furnishings of this building tell stories; they talk of kings and queens and angels and devils; they instruct and they threaten. They are intended to uplift and to terrify. They are an argument made manifest.” Rose Macaulay cited in Richard Giles’ Repitching the Tent.

The building is meant to encounter God in a sacred place, encountering God on the move, recalling the Church to the Gospel and telling the Christian story to the world.

The worshiper should move, get wet, get fed, hear something inspiring, smell something special. The font, the ambo and the altar are central to worship. Where do we come from? Who are we? Where do we go from here?

Are there rules for the bodies in these spaces? Are we welcomed? Are we provided with all that we need to participate? Does the space communicate our status as a part pf the beloved community? Are we, in all our diversity, reflected in this space? How do these spaces show us the mystery of God? The Creator? The Redeemer? The Comforter and Companion? What does it mean theologically to be held in the space of death and resurrection?

Some churches have flags, some heralds/emblems of knights, some handiwork/textiles created by women and men, simple or more decorative vestments, crosses plain or crosses large and adorned with gold or jewels. Some furnishings reflect the native cultures of the geography; some seasons and events are seen in colors, in artistic or simple flowers. Where does your eye rest? How many of the details in these spaces inform your faith?

Will you come in imagination out of the world into a few minutes of God’s peace, and go back again to whatever work you have to do, renewed and refreshed, feeling that it was good to be in this place?

by David Whyte I awoke this morning in the gold light turning this way and that, Thinking for a moment it was one day like any other.

But the veil had gone from my darkened heart and I thought it must have been The quiet candlelight that filled my room, It must have been the first easy rhythm with which I breathed myself to sleep, It must have been the prayer I said speaking to the otherness of the night.

And I thought this is the good day you could meet your love, This is the black day someone close to you could die.

This is the day you realize how easily the thread is broken between this world and the next And I found myself sitting up in the quiet pathway of light, The tawny close-grained cedar burning round me like fire And all the angels of this housely heaven ascending through the first roof of light the sun has made.

This is the bright home in which I live, This is where I ask my friends to come, This is where I want to love all the things it has taken me so long to learn to love.

This is the temple of my adult aloneness and I belong to that aloneness As I belong to my life.

There is no house like the house of belonging.

WHEN THE PRODIGAL SON IS IN EXILE LOOKING AFTER PIGS,

he wakes up. ‘He came to himself ’ (Luke 15:17), and then he goes back to his home and family. But these are really one and the same, since his exile from his family is an exile from his true identity as son and brother. He only can find himself again with them. Repentance is, inseparably, an awakening to God, oneself and to each other. A famous Hasidic Rabbi called Zusia said: ‘When I shall face the celestial tribunal, I shall not be asked why I was not Abraham, Jacob or Moses. I shall be asked why I was not Zusia’ (11). Most sin is pretending to be someone else, admirable or powerful or sexy, who will have value in other people’s eyes and one’s own. As with the prodigal son, it is a form of self-exile, taking refuge in an imaginary self. Why do we all do this? It is because we fear that without some impressive mask we will not be loved.

Like the prodigal son coming home to his family, as we make our confession at the outset of the Eucharist, we come home to each other. This is part of being freed from the lonely and glorious exile of being the hero in my private drama and waking up to our family in God. To come home, the prodigal son must throw away his dignity. He prepares his words: ‘Father, I have sinned against heaven and before you; I am no longer worthy to be called your son; treat me as one of your hired servants’ (Luke 15:18-19). But the father takes no notice and clothes him in the best robe and puts a ring on his finger and shoes on his feet. The son throws away his dignity and receives more than he ever had before. The father also throws away his dignity, galumphing towards his son without waiting for a word of apology.

When we confess our sins at the beginning of the Eucharist, we both throw away our dignity and claim it. Our confession of sins prepares us for the feast. Note that the father never says to his son, ‘I forgive you.’ The feast is the forgiveness. In the same way, the Eucharist is the ordinary sacrament of forgiveness. Forgiveness is not something that God offers before he will love us and receive us back. It is simply sharing God’s own life through faith and hope and love.
