Community Profile: Go Baby Go – First Coast Cruisers LIVING WELL

Go Baby Go is a worldwide, community-based research, design, and outreach program that provides modified ride-on toy cars to children with limited mobility free of cost. The movement was started at the University of Delaware by Cole Galloway to meet the growing need of providing power mobility to young children with disabilities.

The Go Baby Go movement has since spread all over the world with schools, organizations, and businesses starting chapters and giving away modified cars to promote this critical early mobility.

The Pediatric Physical Therapy Residency founded the Go Baby Go chapter at Brooks Rehabilitation in 2018. The modified cars were distributed to various outpatient and inpatient Brooks clinics specifically for patient use. In 2019, the Go Baby Go chapter in Northeast Florida adopted the name “First Coast Cruisers” and began awarding the modified toy cars to children with disabilities within our community.

The Brooks Pediatric Recreation Program hosts the annual First Coast Cruisers community build event in collaboration with volunteers from local universities and organizations every year. This year, volunteers gave the gift of playtime and mobility with the 15 customized cars they gifted to children with disabilities at this year’s event with the theme “Play Is a Human Right.” A human right that means so much.

Jessie Cristof, project manager for First Coast Cruisers, said seeing the look on the children’s faces when they get their first car is “just magical.”

“You’ll see tears across the room, you’ll see the light on the kids, they just light up,” Cristof said. “They have this huge smile.”

Cristof said this means a lot to the parents as well.

“As soon as that kid goes in the car, I look at the caregiver to see their reaction. A lot of them, it’s their first time seeing their kid move and do something independently. The kid gets to pick what direction they go, and they get to depend on how fast or how slow they want to go,” Cristof said.

What are the benefits of mobility for young children?

Power mobility has been shown to help young

children with physical disabilities improve spatial awareness, upper-limb coordination, visual-perceptual skills, spontaneous vocalizations, social initiation with peers, and overall motivation to explore.

Despite its benefits, power mobility in young children is often underutilized due to restrictions in funding, environmental barriers, and parental hesitancy. In recent years, modified ride-on cars have become a popular intervention tool for young children with mobility impairments, as they are shown to be a low-cost and feasible alternative or adjunct to powered mobility devices. Several case studies have also determined the feasibility of these cars as therapeutic training tools in young children with disabilities for improving self-directed mobility, socialization, and family’s perception of children’s capabilities.

How is Go Baby Go funded?

Power mobility technology is very expensive and not readily accessible to many children with mobility impairments. Go Baby Go’s mission is to provide modified ride-on toy cars to children who would benefit from a form of power mobility at absolutely no cost to families. Therefore, they must rely heavily on donations from their community partners to make this a reality. Donors have the option to sponsor different levels of a build: from parts of a car, a whole car, or the entire build. Sponsors also have the opportunity to advertise their business via a logo on the modified cars.

Free Summer Lunch Programs Problem Eater or Just a Phase?

Free Summer Lunch at the Library for Kids and Teens

June 10 – August 2

To help ensure that kids don't go hungry while school is out of session, free and nutritious meals will be available for children and teens (18 and younger) at several Jacksonville Public Library locations starting June 10, 2024. No signup or application is necessary. Any child 18 or younger can simply show up at the library during mealtimes (Monday – Friday) to receive a free and healthy meal. Each meal includes protein, fruit or veggie, and a drink.

While children are at the library eating lunch, they can check out books and participate in other fun activities the library hosts throughout the summer such as storytimes, crafts, Live from the Library, and other great Summer Learning opportunities.

Alot of parents wonder, is my child’s appetite normal? Why is my child such a picky eater? Like a lot of adults, children’s appetites vary from day to day or even meal to meal. To begin, let’s consider your child’s appetite based on age and development.

In the first year of life, an infant grows faster than at any other time of their lives. Most infants will triple their birth weight and grow an average of 10 inches by their first birthday. Then, between ages 1 and 5 years, growth slows, and many children will only gain four to five pounds per year. Children in this age category can normally go three to four months without gaining any weight and then have a growth spurt. During this time of slowed growth, caloric intake drops, so their appetite slows as well. This is actually good news! The child is listening to their satiety and growth cues and eating only when they are hungry. How much children eat is determined by the appetite center in the brain, and healthy children usually eat as much as they need to support growth and energy.

Now let’s consider some other factors that can contribute to picky eating besides a child’s developmental stage.

• Some children may have sensory sensitivity to certain textures, tastes, or smells, leading them to avoid certain foods.

• There may be a genetic component to picky eating, as children may inherit taste preferences or sensory sensitivities from their parents.

• Environment can play a large role in a child’s eating habits. Family mealtime dynamics, food availability, and cultural influences can impact a child's eating habits.

• There may be negative associations with foods. Children may develop aversions to certain foods due to negative experiences like force-feeding or pressure to eat.

• Certain health conditions such as gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) or food allergies can contribute to picky eating behaviors.

So, what are my responsibilities as a parent?

• Keep meal and snack times as relaxed as possible. Maintain a positive environment by avoiding pressure or coercion to eat.

• Allow your child to listen to their internal hunger and satiety cues.

• Variety is key: Introduce a variety of foods, including fruits, vegetables, proteins, and grains, to expose children to different flavors and textures.

• Be a role model: Set a good example by demonstrating healthy eating habits yourself and enjoying a wide range of foods.

• Get everyone involved. Allow children to help in meal preparation (supervise as needed) and grocery shopping to increase their interest in trying new foods.

• Be patient and persistent. It may take multiple exposures to a new food before a child feels comfortable trying it.

• Offer regular meal and snack times. Providing consistent meal and snack times can help regulate appetite and reduce grazing on less nutritious foods.

• Consult a professional. If picky eating is accompanied by concerns of inadequate nutrition or poor growth, consult your pediatrician or a registered dietitian for guidance.

In summary, try to make meal and snack times enjoyable and nutritious. Share at least one meal a day as a family. Allow your child to participate as much as possible in the choice and preparation of foods. Avoid making mealtimes stressful by force-feeding or making your child feel guilty for not trying a new food. And always consult a professional if you think your child’s poor eating habits are impacting his/her growth. j

Splash into Summer Safety

As summer approaches and school comes to an end, many families are making plans for vacation and fun! The weather is heating up, sending Floridians searching for ways to stay cool. This could be a trip to the ocean, lake, pool, or river to take a swim, or even enjoy a boat ride. These activities require a little preparation to make sure everyone stays safe.

There are simple steps families can take to ensure kids are safe when spending time around any body of water. It is important to make sure your child learns to swim. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends swim lessons for children over the age of one. Even with swimming lessons, the most important thing is a watchful and attentive adult. This means really focusing attention on swimming children and not allowing any distractions like phones, books, or chatting with a friend. A common misconception is that someone who is drowning will make noise or splash around, and this is not the case. Drowning is a silent event, so active supervision is key.

Another protective factor is ensuring a U.S. Coast Guard-approved floatation device is worn. There are so many options for parents to purchase when it comes to swimming. Check your flotation device to ensure it states “USCG” approved. If this is not stated, the flotation device does not offer the safety needed and may give children a false sense of security. Parents should also consider the color bathing suits and swimwear that children and teens wear. Choose colors that are more visible and make it easier to find someone who has slipped under the water. If you are swimming in a pool that has a light

Sometimes these waters can be dark and not clear, making it more difficult to see and harder to see to the bottom. Choosing colors that would create the best visibility is important.

When thinking about water safety, keep in mind that teens and preteens are at risk of drowning as well, not just the little ones. It is common to see kids in these age ranges explore natural bodies of water like oceans, rivers, and lakes. These types of waters make up a large majority of drowning deaths. Teach kids to swim only in designated swimming areas and close to a lifeguard. Pay attention to conditions like rip tides, currents, and waves, as these conditions are challenging for even the strongest of swimmers.

Remember there is no one way to prevent drowning, so it is important to create multiple layers of protection. These layers include things such as adult supervision, isolation fencing around pools, working gates and latches, alarms, swim lessons, and learning CPR. Taking a CPR class that teaches the basic skills of how to start life-saving measures really can save a person’s life. Oftentimes, when accidents happen, we are not in the presence of doctors and nurses. Being able to start CPR immediately greatly increases a person’s chance of survival.

Clay County Young Life “Hula Hustle” 5K & 1 Mile Fun Run celebrates its 12th year. The 5K starts at 8am, followed by the Fun Run at 9am. The proceeds from this race will benefit Clay County Young Life with their weekly gatherings for high school teens from Clay County. Community Health Day

May 4, 10am to 2pm

Eartha's Farm & Market, an initiative of the Clara White Mission, is hosting a Community Health Day for families living in NW Jacksonville. They will be raising awareness about preventable diseases that could be remedied by a healthy diet. Several vendors will be partnering with the Farm & Market to provide health screenings for diabetes and heart disease and sharing resources about health care and health insurance options.

Social Media’s Impact on Children

When it comes to the potential risks or benefits of social media for children, we should not look at social media as a whole but instead focus on specific features and behaviors that are built into social platforms and to which children are particularly vulnerable, according to the chief science officer of the American Psychological Association (APA).

More research is needed to better understand how certain features and content inherent in social media, as well as user behavior, may be affecting our children for both good and bad, APA Chief Science Officer Mitch Prinstein, PhD, told the Senate Judiciary Committee.

And the age at which children begin to use social media is an area of great concern, he said.

“Developmental neuroscientists have revealed that there are two highly critical periods for adaptive neural development,” Prinstein said in written testimony. “One of these is the first year of life. The second begins at the outset of puberty and lasts until early adulthood (i.e., from approximately 10 to 25 years old). This latter period is highly relevant, as this is when a great number of youths are offered relatively unfettered access to devices and unrestricted or unsupervised use of social media and other online platforms.”

At puberty, he said, children begin to crave social rewards, such as visibility, attention, and positive feedback from peers. “In contrast, [brain] regions involved in our ability to inhibit our behavior, and resist temptations (i.e., the prefrontal cortex) do not fully develop until early adulthood (i.e., approximately 10–15 years later),” he said. “In other words, when it comes to youths’ cravings for social attention, they are ‘all gas pedal with no brakes.’”

Prinstein explained that an implication of these findings is that children may not have the ability to restrain themselves from using social media too much. Recent research shows over 50% of teens report at least one symptom of clinical dependency on social media.

He also outlined several additional areas of concern that have emerged from scientific research. Social media sites ostensibly exist to foster social connections, he said. But many youths use the sites to compare themselves to others, seeking “likes” and other metrics

rather than healthy, successful relationships.

Social media also heightens the risk for negative peer influence among adolescents, as well as for addictive social media use and stress, he added, citing research showing that many young people use social media more than they intend to and that they have difficulty stopping its use.

Prinstein also pointed to the risks associated with young people accessing social media sites that glamorize disordered eating, cutting, and other harmful behaviors.

Another area of concern is what young people are missing out on by spending so many hours on social media – especially sleep, which they need for healthy development.

But it is not all bad news. Some research demonstrates that social media use is linked with positive outcomes that can benefit youth mental health, according to Prinstein.

“Perhaps most notably, psychological research suggests that young people form and maintain friendships online. These relationships often afford opportunities to interact with a more diverse peer group than offline, and the relationships are close and meaningful and provide important support to youth in times of stress,” he said.

Prinstein made several recommendations for what Congress can do to address many of the risks social media may pose to youth. These include:

• Allocating at least $100 million to study social media and adolescent mental health;

• Mandating that data from algorithms be made public, along with other internal research conducted by social media companies;

• Requiring social media platforms to develop tools to mitigate the harm to youth, such as disabling particularly addictive features and enabling users to opt out of certain algorithms;

• Mandating protections for marginalized and LGBTQ+ kids, while retaining their ability to connect with others in such groups for social support;

• Passing the Kids Online Safety Act and previously proposed legislative fixes such as updates to the Children Online Privacy and Protection Act. j

Instagram Announces New Tools to Protect Teens

Instagram recently announced that it will be launching new tools to protect underage users (under 16 or 18, depending on their country) from sexual exploitation on the platform.

The news comes from a blog posted by the social media platform that said they are already testing out new tools to tackle the growing cases of “Sextortion” – a practice in which a person persuades another to send sexually explicit images and then threatens to leak them online if they don’t pay up or do whatever’s asked of them.

Feature #1 – Blurring Explicit Media

Talking about the tools, the blog said that one feature will automatically blur nudity in direct messages so that teens cannot get bombarded with unsolicited inappropriate pictures. It will be turned on by default for underage users, but adults will also be encouraged to use it.

Feature #2 – Pop-Ups

The platform has also decided to show pop-ups when a user tries to send a sensitive image.

For example, it might happen that a teen has been persuaded into sending nudes, and they willingly try to share it through DMs. In that case, a popup will come up reminding them of the risks of sending that photo.

Similarly, when a user receives an image containing nudity, they will get another pop-up reminding them that it’s okay to not respond if they don’t want to. This pop-up will be followed by an option to view the safety tips or to block the user.

These hurdles might make the user rethink their decision and step back.

Feature #3 – Helpline Number

Last but not the least, the company has decided to make it harder for scammers to find potential targets and will add child safety helplines to the app’s in-built reporting tool.

It’s important to note that Instagram uses on-device machine learning to check whether an image has nudity. Since the analysis is happening on the device itself, the picture will be protected by end-to-end encryption; Meta workers will not have access to that image unless someone reports it.

Instagram’s fight against sextortion doesn’t

end at just protecting the victims.

• Once a scammer has been identified, their account is immediately removed, and they are barred from creating a new account in the future.

• Depending on the severity of the crime, they might also be reported to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC) and other regulatory authorities.

Why is Instagram suddenly focusing on teen safety and sextortion?

The company said that the protection of minors has always been one of its most important agendas.

“We’ve spent years working closely with experts, including those experienced in fighting these crimes, to understand the tactics scammers use to find and extort victims online, so we can develop effective ways to help stop them” the blog said.

Some child safety measures employed by Instagram:

• Instagram already imposes stricter rules on teen DMs so that users who aren’t connected to them can’t send them a text.

• It also displays safety notices to teens who are already in contact with a potential scammer.

• If anyone is threatening to leak their private images, Instagram provides a built-in reporting tool to report the DM and the scammer.

• Instagram is also one of the founding members of Lantern – a platform that helps tech companies share insights about accounts and certain behavior patterns that might violate their child safety policy.

• Furthermore, it helped the NCMEC develop a platform called Take It Down, which helps people prevent their personal images from ending up online.

It’s clear that Instagram is already doing a lot to prevent financial sextortion, but both Instagram and Facebook faced severe criticism for not doing enough to curb online crimes on their platform. Why Should Babies Not Have Honey?

Clostridium botulinum bacteria is a toxin (poison) that lives in soil and dust and can get on surfaces like carpets and floors. But these aren’t the only places it’s found: Clostridium can also contaminate honey.

These bacteria are harmless to older kids and adults; their mature digestive systems can move the toxins through the body before they cause harm. Babies younger than 1 year old, however, are at risk of infant botulism caused by the Clostridium. Infant botulism is an illness that can happen when a baby ingests (takes in) toxins from Clostridium.

What are the signs of infant botulism?

Babies with infant botulism (BAH-chuh-liz-im) might have:

• constipation (often the first sign that parents notice)

• weak facial muscles that make their face look "flat"

• a weak cry

• weak muscles in the arms, legs, and neck, leading to floppiness

• breathing problems

• trouble swallowing with a lot of drooling.

They also might not feed well or move as much as usual.

How Is Infant Botulism Diagnosed?

Doctors diagnose infant botulism by asking about the baby's symptoms. They'll do an exam and might order tests to look for the toxin and to see how the baby's muscles are working.

How Is Infant Botulism Treated?

Babies with infant botulism need care in a

hospital, usually in the intensive care unit (ICU). The healthcare team will try to limit the problems the toxin causes in the baby's body.

Doctors treat infant botulism with an antitoxin called botulism immune globulin intravenous (BIGIV). They give this to babies as soon as possible if they suspect botulism. Babies with botulism who get BIGIV early recover sooner and spend less time in the hospital than babies who don't.

If the toxin affects the breathing muscles, a baby might need to use a breathing machine (ventilator) for a few weeks until they get stronger. It also can affect the swallowing muscles, so babies usually need intravenous (IV) fluids or feedings through a tube to get nourishment.

How Can I Protect My Baby from Infant Botulism?

Infant botulism usually affects babies who are younger than 6 months old. But all babies are at risk for it until their first birthday. Experts don't know why some infants get botulism while others don't.

This is why babies younger than 1 year old should never be given honey or any processed foods that contain honey (like honey graham crackers) until after their child's first birthday. Honey is a proven source of the bacteria. Light and dark corn syrups also might contain botulism-causing bacteria, but a link hasn't been proven. Check with your doctor before giving these syrups to a baby.

Disney Revamping Disability Access Policies at Theme Parks

Disney is overhauling its disability access policies after seeing an explosion in abuse of a program meant to accommodate visitors with autism and other developmental disabilities.

The company’s implementation of new procedures comes as Disney said that its Disability Access Service, or DAS, program has become the most widely requested service at its parks, with usage tripling in the past five years alone.

The Disability Access Service allows visitors with disabilities to request return times for one attraction at a time in order to avoid physically waiting in line. Disney says that the program, which was introduced in 2013 to curb misuse of its previous system, is intended for those who “due to a developmental disability like autism or similar, are unable to wait in a conventional queue for an extended period of time.”

However, the company now says that use of the Disability Access Service far exceeds the population for which it was intended, meaning that people who legitimately need accommodations are having to wait longer and officials are laying out new steps to rein things in.

Disney is adding cast members and investing in specialized training to help people with disabilities understand and identify accommodations based on their needs. In addition, the company is working with Inspire Health Alliance to provide certified health professionals trained in psychology or behavioral health to help Disney cast members determine if individuals qualify for the Disability Access Service program. Eligibility will be based on personalized conversations centered on questions about an individual’s needs.

Guests who do not qualify for the Disability Access Service program may be advised to use other accommodations, like the line-return option for those who need to visit the restroom frequently or wheelchair access and location return times for individuals using mobility devices, Disney said.

To seek approval for the Disability Access Service program under the updated approach, visitors are encouraged to use Disney’s virtual video chat system to speak with a member of the accessibility team about their needs prior to

arriving at the park. At Disney World, guests can do a virtual chat on-site.

Disney is extending the length of time that enrollment in the Disability Access Service program is valid for from 60 to 120 days. At the same time, the program will be limited to the immediate family of the person who qualifies for the Disability Access Service or up to four people.

“If it is determined that any of the statements a guest made in the process of obtaining DAS are not true, the guest will be permanently barred from entering the Walt Disney World Resort and the Disneyland Resort, and any previously purchased Annual Passes, Magic Key passes, tickets and other park products and services will be forfeited and not refunded,” Disney says on its website.

The new policies will take effect May 20 at Disney World and June 18 at Disneyland.

Disney is not the only theme park company to make changes to its disability access policies in recent times.

Last year, Universal Studios started requiring visitors seeking disability accommodations to apply for an Individual Accessibility Card prior to visiting its parks in Florida and California. To receive the card, which is issued by the International Board of Credentialing and Continuing Education Standards, or IBCCES, people with disabilities must submit a photograph and documentation from a medical provider, government entity, or education professional detailing the type of accommodations requested.

Disney officials said they considered partnering with several third parties for its access card but decided against those options because many of them required visitors to plan in advance and provide records or documentation.

The Florida State College at Jacksonville High School Summer Musical Theatre Experience is celebrating its 18th year providing theatre opportunities to 7th-12th graders in the First Coast area. This summer, more than 50 student performers and technicians will train with professional theatre artists in preparation for the production of Disney's Beauty and the Beast. 2024 UNF Summer Reading Programs

The University of North Florida offers Summer Reading Programs for children of all ages and adults. The program is being offered online and in person. Mayor Deegan's River City Readers

Mayor Deegan’s River City Readers is a citywide literacy challenge for students of all ages that runs through 2024. Emergencies with pets often happen at the most unexpected times and can be frightening for both you and your pet. Unfortunately, emergencies do sometimes occur. Learning how to respond to them can make a huge difference in the life of your pet.

What to do in a Pet Emergency

If you determine your pet is having an emergency, consider the following steps:

• Remain calm.

• Contact your family veterinarian or your nearest after-hours emergency facility.

• Your pet will be scared and may be in pain. Use caution in moving them to avoid getting bitten.

• Cats should be put in a carrier for safe transport.

• Dogs should be on a leash with a snug-fitting collar or harness.

• If your pet has ingested a toxin, try to gather all the information you can about the substance, the amount potentially ingested, and the time it was eaten. Bring the package if possible or take a photo of it.

• Do not induce vomiting unless instructed by your veterinarian.

• Bring a list or photo of any medications your pet takes on a regular basis.

When to Take Your Dog to an Emergency Vet

• Trauma, such as an attack by another animal or coming into contact with a moving vehicle

• Ingestion of a toxic food or substance

• Increase in breathing rate or effort

• Any vomiting or diarrhea in a puppy

• Seizures

• Collapse or loss of consciousness

Pre-ceremony music by the Navy Band Southeast and the Voices of Jacksonville will begin at 8am, and the ceremony will commence at 8:30am. The Observance should conclude by 10am.
