new year is upon us once again! If you are like me, you may be thinking what the year will bring for your family. For some of you, this may be the year that your child transitions from elementary school to middle school, or makes a transition from middle school to high school.

For many, that transition is tough enough being introduced into a new school environment with new teachers, classmates and schedules. But for those kids with severe food allergies, the transition can be even scarier.

n acetaminophen overdose is serious — and it can happen easier than you might think.

Here’s how to protect your child.

Acetaminophen (Tylenol, others) has long been a standard remedy for fever and pain in children. It’s effective and available without a prescription. But, in excess, it can be harmful. Here’s what you need to know about acetaminophen overdoses and children.

What might cause an acetaminophen overdose?

An acetaminophen overdose can happen in the blink of an eye. Consider these scenarios: •

You’re in a hurry. You might unknowingly give your child too much acetaminophen if you misread the instructions, don’t carefully measure the medication, give two doses too close together — or if you don’t realize that another caregiver has already given your child a dose.

You combine medications. If your child has various cold symptoms, your instinct might be to combine acetaminophen with a cold remedy. This can be dangerous, however, because many cold medications already contain acetaminophen. Also, cough and cold medicines should be avoided in children younger than age 6 due to possibly serious side effects.

You use the wrong formulation. You might cause an overdose if you give your child adult acetaminophen instead of a children’s formulation.

You decide that more is better. If you’re not satisfied with the performance of the recommended dose of acetaminophen, you might increase the dose or its frequency and cause an accidental overdose.

Your child mistakes the medication for candy or juice. Overdoses often occur when a child mistakes acetaminophen for something safe to eat or drink. This can happen when an adult leaves the bottle open or accessible after using medication.

What are the recommended acetaminophen doses?

If you give your child acetaminophen, read the product label carefully to determine the correct dose based on your child’s weight. Generally, doses can be repeated every four hours, but shouldn’t be given more than five times in 24 hours.

What happens if the acetaminophen dose is too much?

Too much acetaminophen overloads the liver’s ability to process the drug safely. An acetaminophen overdose can lead to life-threatening liver problems.

If you’re concerned about a possible acetaminophen overdose or notice early signs or symptoms of an overdose — nausea, vomiting, lethargy and abdominal pain within 24 hours — call a poison control center at 800-222-1222 in the United States or seek emergency care. If possible, note the strength or concentration of acetaminophen in the product to help poison control or the emergency responders assess your child. If you seek medical help, take the medication bottle with you.

In the hospital, a child with an acetaminophen overdose will have a blood test to determine if the concentration in his or her blood is toxic. If necessary, an antidote might be given to reverse the effects of the acetaminophen.

How can an acetaminophen overdose be prevented?

Before you give your child acetaminophen, consider whether he or she needs it. For example, the main goal of treating a child who has a fever is to improve his or her comfort — not to normalize his or her body temperature. In addition: • •

Know your child’s weight. Follow the directions and weight-based dose recommendations printed on medication labels.

Use the measuring device that comes with your child’s medication. Don’t use household teaspoons — which can vary in size — to measure liquid acetaminophen.

Don’t give your child acetaminophen when he or she is taking other medications containing acetaminophen.

Don’t give your child adult formulations of acetaminophen.

Securely replace child-resistant caps after using medication and store all medication in its original container out of your child’s reach.

College Admissions More Art Than Science

A

fter weeks of negotiation, Harvard University recently agreed to provide the Department of Justice access to its admissions files.

The department is reopening a complaint by 63 Asian-American groups that Harvard discriminates against Asian-American applicants.

Separately, Harvard undergraduates have recently begun to take advantage of their right to view their own admissions files, often only to become frustrated in their efforts to pinpoint exactly why they got admitted. The inquiries of the Department of Justice and the curious Harvard students have something in common: Both are unlikely to turn up any evidence of why some applicants make the cut and others don’t. That’s because both inquiries rest on the faulty assumption that admissions decisions are driven by an objective, measurable process that will yield the same results over and over again.

Elite private universities have made clear time and again that their admissions decisions are made through a holistic decision-making process that involves a series of discussions among the admissions team. This means, for example, Harvard rejects 1 in 4 students with perfect SAT scores. The University of Pennsylvania and Duke University reject three out of five high school valedictorians. Despite universities like Harvard, Princeton, Yale, and Stanford having closely aligned admissions criteria and similar rates of admission, just because an applicant gets into one school does not mean the applicant will get into another. That’s why it makes headlines when a student is reported to have gained admission to all the Ivies. This is a rare, unexpected event.

So, how do universities make admissions decisions? William Fitzsimmons, dean of admissions at Harvard, writes of an “expansive view of excellence.” This includes “extracurricular distinction and personal qualities” in addition to test scores and grades. Evaluating applications is a long process. At Harvard, it involves at least two readers of each file. It also involves discussions among a subcommittee of at least four individuals that last up to an hour. The process is more art than science Holistic evaluation allows admissions officers to take into account opportunities, hardships and other experiences that may have affected an applicant’s grades and SAT scores. They may also consider how those things affected their participation in activities outside of school.

Nevertheless, the outcomes of admission to the most elite colleges are unequal. So, even if

holistic evaluation does a better job than looking at test scores and grades alone, the process still concludes by systematically undervaluing working class, poor, black and Latino young men and women. That is, if we assume that talent and “personal qualities” are equally distributed in our society, this disproportion should tell us something is amiss.

Merit is overrated. Are there any discernible patterns between who gets in and students who were seriously considered but rejected? Probably not. Harvard President Drew Faust has said that Harvard could fill its incoming class twice with high school valedictorians. In fact, we should discard the notion that admissions is a meritocratic process that selects the “best” 18-yearolds who apply to a selective university. When we let go of our meritocracy ideals, we see more clearly that so many talented, accomplished young people who will be outstanding leaders in the future will not make it to the likes of Harvard, Stanford and Yale. There simply are not enough places for all of them.

Further, many more disadvantaged young people have never had the opportunity to cultivate talents because their parents did not have the resources to pay for private music lessons or a pitching coach. In fact, the gap between what wealthy and poor parents spend on extracurricular activities has dramatically increased in recent years. So looking for explanations for why you did get in, or whether some groups are favored over others, misses the broader picture of the lack of clarity on what gets anyone into elite colleges. It also ignores the unequal opportunities young Americans have in the process. One way forward for college admissions, which I have suggested as a thought experiment in my book, “The Diversity Bargain,” is to take all qualified students for a selective college and enter them into an admissions lottery. The lottery could have weights for desired characteristics the college deems important, such as social class, geographic diversity, race and intended major. This method would make clear the arbitrariness in the admissions process. Volleyball, Football, Swimming and Golf “All-County Coaches Team” Named Clay county high school sports coaches have selected their all-county picks in volleyball, football, swimming and golf. The first teams are shown.

Standouts include: Volleyball – The top two setters in the county are junior Jillian Bemis (Middleburg) with 256 assists, 164 kills and 154 digs and senior Nataleigh Nieuwenhuis (Fleming Island) with 409 assists, 141 digs and 37 aces.

Football (Offense) – Leading the way for the regional semi-final winners Clay High is senior quarterback Caleb Eason.who completed 62% of his passes for 1604 yards and 28 touchdowns and running back Aundre Carter, who recorded an astounding 2209 yards and 23 touchdowns.

Anderson has been the principal of Palencia since the 2013-2014 school year and has more than 20 years of experience within the district, serving as principal at Cunningham Creek Elementary, assistant principal at Mill Creek Elementary and Durbin Creek Elementary schools, a curriculum coordinator at Switzerland Point Middle School and a teacher at Cunningham Creek.

The St. Johns Cultural Council is seeking applications for their Junior ROWITA Fellowships. The fellowships were started in 2011 to help young women develop their artistic skills through continued study and training after graduating from high school.

The fellowships are available to St. Johns County high school women (public, private or homeschooled) who are entering arts-based programs of higher education to advance their creative de-

velopment and career. The fellowship awards up to $1000 to qualifying applicants who have either applied or been accepted into in a BFA program or a summer institute or intensive.

Awards are given in three categories: performing, visual, and literary arts. In order to be eligible, candidates must have a 3.0 GPA, and acceptance into a college level arts program or summer institute. Applicants must also submit a letter describing their relationship with their art, a letter of recommendation from their arts teacher; and a DVD sampling of their work. All applications are reviewed by a panel of past recipients of the Dr.

Gail Pflaster Award ROWITA, an honor that recognizes the contributions woman have made to the artistic environment in St. Johns County.

Prior to that she served as the assistant principal at Cunningham Creek Elementary. She also taught second, third and fourth grade and served as an instructional literacy coach. Before Cunningham Creek she worked at PVPV/Rawlings Elementary School and Ocean Palms Elementary School, where she held her first position with the district as a third grade teacher.

“Jessica has an innate ability to develop strong and lasting connections with students, staff, families and community members,” said Forson.

“She is the perfect candidate to provide a smooth transition to the new school.”

“I am very enthusiastic about continuing my professional journey alongside the students, staff, and families in Northeast St. Johns County,” said Richardson.

Richardson was named St. Johns County Assistant Principal of the Year in 2013. She holds a bachelor’s degree from the University of North Florida and a master’s degree from Grand Canyon University.

Parents Can Get Help Navigating YouTube Waters

K

ids go crazy over YouTube. It’s where they head for news, entertainment, humor, and even knowledge on topics ranging from multiplication to Minecraft. But for all the fun stuff on YouTube, the inappropriate content – from ads to negative comments to swear words and hate speech – concerns many parents.

Now thanks to Common Sense, the leading independent nonprofit organization dedicated to helping kids thrive in a world of media and technology by empowering parents, teachers, and policymakers unbiased information, trusted advice, and innovative tools to make this media a positive force, you can read reviews of YouTube’s most popular channels, and learn more about the video service, including ways to make it safer, what to do if your kids wants their own YouTube channel and how to find quality content.

There’s no way to filter out all of the bad language, age-inappropriate videos, or negative user comments on YouTube. Google, YouTube’s parent company, has a guiding philosophy of an open web, where pretty much anything is allowable -- unless it’s illegal, harmful, or extremely offensive. You can always opt to use other, more tightly curated video apps (including YouTube Kids or the subscription-based YouTube Red, among others) instead of the almost-anything-goes YouTube site. But if you or your kids want to stick with YouTube, try these built-in features to make it a little safer.

Use Playlists. When your kids log into YouTube, they’ll see the playlists you’ve created and can watch them instead of watching whatever comes up randomly or by searching. Playlists also reformat the Up Next section, so your kids will only see the next video on the list and not an indiscriminately selected related video.

Subscribe to channels you like. Subscribing to your favorite channels adds them to your feed, so kids can easily click on them when they log in. Subscribing also helps YouTube determine other, similar videos you might like.

Enable Restricted Mode. In your YouTube account settings (the little gear symbol), turn on Restricted Mode at the very bottom of the page. That should cut down on some of the age-inappropriate stuff.

Turn off Autoplay. The related videos next to the main video you’re watching will play automatically unless you toggle off Autoplay.

Turning this off prevents a potentially age-inappropriate video from playing.

Use a video blocker. Downloadable video blockers are created by third parties. You can

add them to your browser and configure them to block videos by channel, subject matter, or keywords.

It may seem foreign to parents, but for kids, video is a fun way to communicate. All the coolest apps – Snapchat, Instagram, Musical.ly, Messenger – let users share video clips. So even though you may have concerns about the risks of broadcasting on the Web – and they are legitimate – your kids may see it as a way of expressing themselves, learning digital video skills, sharing with friends, and experimenting creatively. It’s important to balance your concerns with the benefits they can reap.

Your kid’s age will determine how to proceed.

YouTube is supposed to be for users over the age of 13, due to the fact that the parent company, Google, collects and markets. The Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act exempts kids from data collection. But, as we all know, plenty of kids have YouTube channels. It’s not illegal for kids under 13 to create social media profiles on sites that collect user data so long as the parent is aware of the account, knows user data is being collected, and has approved the kid’s account.

OPTIONS IF YOUR KID IS UNDER 13: Use a parent’s account. If you have Gmail, you have a YouTube log-in. Simply go to YouTube, log in with your Gmail address, and go to the account settings. Pay special attention to the upload defaults (where you can make your videos private) and the comments, which you can approve before they go live or turn off altogether. If you use your account, you’ll do all the uploading, but your kid can still have lots of creative control in the design of the channel, the descriptions, and, of course, the videos.

Create a Family Link account. If you have an Android device, you can use Google’s Family Link app that lets you create supervised account for kids under 13.

Use a different website. YouTube is the most popular video site, but other good options offer built-in safety measures for kids.

There’s a lot to be wary of on YouTube, and it can be challenging to find YouTube channels that aren’t full of behavior you don’t want your kids repeating.

Jacksonville Science Festival Starting To Build Up STEAM

he sixth annual Jacksonville Science Festival, a 3-day festival featuring STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts and math) projects by local students is set for March 1, 2 and 3. The first two days the event will be at Florida State College at Jacksonville’s south campus, 11901 Beach Blvd, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. On the third day, the students will be at Friendship Fountain Park on the Southbank Riverwalk downtown adjacent to the Museum of Science and History from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Winning teams will be award prize money (High School $500, Middle School $300, Elementary $200) based on a popular vote. Winning teams must represent a school.

A college scholarship of $1,000 will be awarded to one participant to the school of their choice.

The Dog Aging Project

T

he Dog Aging Project is a unique opportunity to advance scientific discovery while simultaneously providing enormous benefit for people and their pets. We believe that enhancing the longevity and healthspan – the healthy period of life – in peoples’ pets will have a major impact on our lives.

To accomplish this goal, we are creating a network of pet owners, veterinarians, and scientific partners that will facilitate enrolling and monitoring pets in the Project. The Dog Aging Project has two major aims, described further below: a longitudinal study of aging in dogs and an intervention trial to prevent disease and extend healthy longevity in middleaged dogs.

Longitudinal Study of Aging in Pet Dogs Despite the wealth of veterinary expertise in treating elderly companion animals, there has never been a comprehensive, detailed study of aging in dogs or cats. The goal of this component of the Dog Aging Project is to perform the first nationwide, large-scale longitudinal study of aging in pet dogs, where individual animals will be followed throughout life to understand the biological and environmental factors that determine why some dogs die early or succumb to diseases such as cancer, kidney failure, and dementia, while others live to a relatively old age free from these problems.

Similar longitudinal studies of aging in humans have yielded a wealth of important data, but require decades to perform. What takes decades in people will take just years in dogs. Using cutting-edge technologies, in less than a decade we could identify the critical factors that would help our pets stay healthy longer, with added bonus that we will be able to compare our outcomes to those from the human studies.

Rapamycin Intervention Trial in Pet Dogs A small number of interventions have been shown to reproducibly and robustly extend lifespan in mice. Among these, the best candidate for working similarly in dogs and people is a drug called rapamycin.

In order to meet our goal of increasing healthy longevity in pet dogs, the Dog Aging Project is performing an intervention trial to treat middleaged dogs with the FDA approved drug rapamycin.

At high doses, rapamycin is used successfully in human patients to prevent organ transplant

rejection and to fight cancer. At low doses, rapamycin slows aging and extends lifespan in several organisms, including mice, with few or no side effects.

THE SMALLEST CREATURES HAVE THE GREATEST POWERS

The first phase of this study is complete and we are currently in the process of planning Phase 2.

This next phase of the study will enroll a second cohort of middle-aged dogs into a longer-term, low-dose rapamycin regimen designed to maximize lifespan and healthspan extension.

Several age-related parameters will be assessed before, during, and after the treatment period, including cognitive function, heart function, immunity, and cancer incidence. We intend for the second phase to include dogs from around the United States, and, if possible, the rest of the world.

Our primary concern is improving animal health and well being. The dogs will be closely monitored by veterinary professionals during all phases of these studies. While it is true that high doses of rapamycin can have negative side effects such as immune suppression and delayed wound healing, these are greatly mitigated if not completely absent at the doses used to extend longevity, and both animal and human studies indicate that even mild adverse events are rare.

We are actively raising funds to support all of these studies. This includes submission of grants to the National Institute on Aging as well as foundations who support aging and veterinary research.

Unfortunately, the reality is that funding from these sources is limited and often takes several years to obtain.

That’s why we are also seeking donations from people who believe that research to delay aging is important and that dogs deserve longer healthier lives. Funding for these projects would directly support recruiting pet dogs into the study, veterinary costs to perform the exams and procedures, clinical and molecular assays, and bioinformatics analysis of the collected data. THINGS TO DO WinterFEST • Thru January 8 Families are invited for the annual WinterFEST celebration hosted by Adventure Landing, featuring a spectacular outdoor ice skating rink and ice slide.

Shipwreck Island Water Park and wave pool will be transformed into a cozy Alpine experience complete with ice skating, Blizzard Bluff Village, Crystal Creek Lodge, Mistletoe Marketplace, Santa’s Workshop, s’more roasting, ornament decoration, sugar cookie decorating, and more. Ice Skating Admission is $10, and Ice Skate Rental is $3. All other activities require tickets, which can be purchased for 1 Activity Ticket: $1.75; 3 Activity Tickets: $5; 10 Activity Tickets: $15; and 20 Activity Tickets: $25. Group rates, family packages, and fun passes are also available. WinterFEST is open on select days during select times, so be sure to check the calendar for more details.
