Jacob K. Javits Convention Center

Dear Friends:
Jacob K. Javits Convention Center
Dear Friends:
Kathy Hochul Governor
This past year has been one of great change for the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center, during which we not only commemorated past accomplishments, but also looked ahead to the future of the Center and its impact on our state.
Not long ago, we celebrated the retirement of Alan Steel, who dedicated 13 years of outstanding service to the Javits Center as its CEO. Under Alan's leadership, the facility underwent a remarkable transformation with the completion of the South Javits renovation as well as the 1.2 million square foot expansion project. The Javits Center is now an international model of eco-friendly design. Whether it's installing a 6.75-acre green roof with a 2,000-panel solar array or implementing innovative waste diversion operations, Alan's dedication to sustainability has made an indelible impact on our state's build environment.
This year marked another historic moment with the introduction of Joyce Leveston as the new CEO. Bringing more than 35 years of industry experience to her role, Joyce has established herself as a dynamic leader who will shepherd the Javits Center into a new era of growth.
Thanks to these changes, the Javits Center has never been more prepared to fulfill its mission to catalyze economic growth in New York State. From first time events like Fanatics Fest to returning anchors like National Retail Federation flagship and the New York International Auto Show, the Javits Center continues to host a diverse range of events, create thousands of jobs, and draw in over a million people each year.
As we move forward, I have no doubt that the Javits Center will continue to welcome visitors to experience unforgettable moments and build lasting connections. I commend Alan on his exceptional career and wish him a happy and healthy retirement. To Joyce and all leadership and staff, I extend my gratitude for your dedication to creating a more prosperous state.
Joyce Leveston CEO
Taking over as the Chief Executive Officer of the Javits Center has been the highlight of my career. This organization is a true gem – a leader in sustainability, security and technology all served up with a waterfront view. It is my privilege to reintroduce Javits Center to the world and help it shine even brighter.
This past year has been defined by balance and variety. In addition to our hallmark trade shows, we’ve significantly expanded our portfolio to include a growing number of corporate events — spanning technology, finance, law, and more. Our flexible spaces have allowed us to host multiple events simultaneously, ranging from large-scale concerts and spiritual gatherings to intensive training sessions.
Sustainability remains a cornerstone of our mission. We’ve continued to expand our sustainable practices — from our zero-waste Steel Farm on our rooftop to our innovative catering offerings to our leadership in energy conservation through the Demand Response program. Through these efforts we are not only improving our environment but also contributing directly to our clients’ sustainability goals and our own bottom line. Our sustainability initiatives are the key to creating a better future for our employees, our customers and our community.
We’ve made major investments in safety and technology, including real-time intel tools, and AIdriven customer support. Our commitment to being a good neighbor and employer is reflected in our volunteer initiatives, employee engagement programs, and the community contributions made through our JavitsCares program.
As we move forward, we remain focused on enhancing our guest experience and bringing our clients’ vision to life, while operating as a sustainable, resilient venue in the heart of New York City.
Thank you for being a part of our journey. We look forward to continuing to serve you and our broader community with excellence.
Sincerely,
Joyce Leveston

This past year has been all about balance within th events industry. In addition to the major trade show who call Javits Center home, we have introduced a strong blend of special events and corporate events our portfolio.
These new corporate events span a variety of categories, including legal, financial and consulti Overall, we retained 36% of new events year-overyear - with a 65% retention rate year-over-year for technology events.
The versatile spaces within Javits Center make it possible to simultaneously host multiple unique events. For example, one summer day North Javits activated all three floors for three different events: spiritual leader Amma’s services, the Carnegie Hall’s World Orchestra Week play-in with 700 young musicians from around the world and Success Academy Teacher Training. With a space for anything, everything is possible.
When you are located in the Big Apple, it’s important to be adaptable. Our Sales Team is constantly ready to take advantage of new opportunities within the city, including when the Macy’s Fourth of July Fireworks moved to the Hudson River this year, giving North Javits a front row seat to the show. On an abbreviated timeline, our team was able to put together a package to get potential clients quotes faster thereby expediting the booking process.
Javits Center’s dedicated Event Solutions team is the key to any event’s success. This elite team guides event organizers through the best use of our space and infrastructure to transform floor plans into unforgettable moments.
This past year also saw a change in strategy for our social media pages. By including cohesive messaging across all platforms and targeting our posts to fit our strategy, we
created more engaging channels for customers to explore the amazing things about Javits Center.
Our in-house catering team at Cultivated continues to elevate their offerings to create an unforgettable dining experience. A collaboration between Levy, CxRA and Javits Center, Cultivated used the freshest ingredients directly from our rooftop farm to create a true farm-to-table experience. Our ingredients that can’t be sourced from the farm are primarily sourced from New York vendors – keeping our ingredients fresh and the local economy booming.
Cultivated is also constantly looking for ways to include new sustainable options for our clients. This year, Cultivated introduced 50CUT, a Pat LeFrieda protein option featuring 50% beef, 50% mushroom, that is more sustainable without cutting back on flavor. They also tested sustainable serviceware at the NEST Climate Campus, where grab-and-go meals were served in reusable containers that were returned, washed and reused. Our culinary operations are a testament to sustainability as a sales tool for Javits Center –demonstrating how our culture, operations and infrastructure make it possible for clients to reach their own sustainability goals.
This year also marked the completion of many ongoing facility projects. We closed out all the expansion-related construction and completed the fire alarm system replacement project as well as the auxiliary radio communications systems for first responders. We replaced several large-scale fixed assets within the facility, including mechanical and industrial equipment.
Our six-block long campus always requires ongoing maintenance to keep it in the best condition. With the hard work of our Facilities Team and trade members, Javits Center stays clean, bright and welcoming. As we continue to find ways to elevate our venue, we reviewed spaces that could use an upgrade. To that end, we completed the renovation of the 1A men’s restroom which will inform the restoration of 50+ bathrooms throughout our south building.
This past year, Javits Center made upgrades to digital signage throughout the campus. We also replaced the Crystal Palace jumbotron to give everyone who enters Javits Center a bright new entrance and the opportunity to share additional messaging with our customers.
Javits Center is a powerhouse for events but that can mean some strain on the power grid. To align with our commitment to being a good neighbor, we worked with our energy consultants at NuEnergen and continued the Demand Response program. Demand Response is an energy reduction program designed to reduce the risk of blackouts during periods of high demand on the power grid, such as during heat waves. Javits Center is one of the single largest contributors to electricity load reduction when there is a shortage of electricity supply. The densely populated New York City faces unique challenges with power constraints, which makes Javits Center’s Demand Response program a critical part of the city’s sustainable future.
This year marks our 10-year anniversary of our participation in the Demand Response program. For our summer 2024 participation, we earned our largest check yet at over $1 million – demonstrating how sustainability can be beneficial for both the planet and the
The construction of the truck marshaling building in 2021 brought reduced traffic in the neighborhood and a smoother load in and out experience for our customers. It also came with increased security. Javits Center is the only convention center in the United States that has a vehicle software tracking and reservation system.
This technology functions as a validation and security checkpoint as well as a screening apparatus. By having the drivers register in advance, our Logistics Team is able to plot out where trucks will park, expedite the check-in process with a quick QR code scan, and monitor the journey of drivers with the help of our 32 license plate readers. The truck marshaling building is where safety meets technology to create an unparalleled asset for the Javits Center.
Javits Center works closely with New York City and State law enforcement agencies to make our facility one of the safest public assembly spaces in the country. The Center is an industry leader in terms of the volume and depth of correspondence with law enforcement. Beyond our campus, we monitor activity throughout New York City, with a special emphasis on Manhattan, to make sure our guests are safe no matter where they are staying.
Our talented and professional Public Safety Team stands ready to assist with every event’s VIP guest needs. Beyond liaising with local law enforcement, a Javits Center Public Safety Officer is assigned to every VIP security detail to ensure they move around the venue in the safest and most efficient ways possible. Additionally, every event undergoes a risk assessment to determine what security parameters are appropriate. When security is paramount, Javits Center rises to the challenge.
Our Command Center prides themselves on returning lost items to their rightful owners. Throughout the year, 2,500 items make their way into the lost & found and 70% of those items are reunited with their owners. The Command Center goes above and beyond to assist our guests – providing not just a secure facility but also exceptional customer service.
Creating a safe environment for our customers is a priority for the Javits Center. We invest in technology to stay ahead of any potential threat before it can become an issue. This past year, our Command Center started utilizing Dataminr to provide real-time intel about security concerns from an extensive range of sources. Getting these alerts allows our Public Safety team to be proactive and strategic in our security plans.
Datminr joins other technology-forward safety measures throughout Javits Center. We are enrolled in first responder software that provides geospacial mapping for our entire sixblock campus, cutting down on confusion and response times. There are approximately 3,000 cameras located throughout the facility as well as around 2,000 card access readers to ensure that areas stay secured. Our Vpod welcome kiosks allow temporary workers to quickly and securely checkin for their shift. Technology combined with our talented Public Safety Team creates a safe environment for our customers so they can focus on putting on successful events.
In a facility the size of Javits Center, waste diversion is a challenge we are overcoming every day. With the help of ongoing training and clear communication, we have achieved a waste diversion rate of 45.5%.
Easy access to clearly labeled bins plays a major role in compliance for the millions of people who enter our facility. This year, we introduced a food scraps bin option that event organizers can request to be put by food & beverage locations.
Our blue recycling bins focus on bottles and cans to prevent confusion that leads to cross contamination when collecting all recyclables. Total waste generated at Javits Center is reduced by almost 400 tons because people are being more sustainable from the start, demonstrating how our customers’ values align with our own.
With our wide array of sustainable infrastructure and operations, Javits Center is well-positioned to help every customer reach their sustainability goals. To help you navigate these options, we have a dedicated Sustainability Team that create customized waste plans for engaged customers. The Sustainability Team also helps facilitate pre-event surveys and post-event reports to provide actionable data to our clients.
In 2022, Javits Center joined hands
In honor of Alan Steel’s retirement, Javits Center’s one-acre rooftop farm was officially renamed “Steel Farm.” Steel was Chief Executive Officer from 2012-2024 – guiding Javits Center through major moments including the Hurricane Sandy, the Covid-19 pandemic and the North Javits expansion.
Our rooftop farm is a collaboration between Javits Center, our farmers from Brooklyn Grange and our culinary team at Cultivated. These groups work together to evaluate upcoming events, plan menus based on farm output and decide planting schedules based on kitchen needs. For example, this past season there has been a greater focus on planting herbs that are the stars of the dish because they are more expensive to source and more difficult to keep fresh. This teamwork has resulted in more than 80% of farm crops being used by our culinary team.
Crops not used by Cultivated are responsibly composted or donated to local organizations addressing food insecurity. This past growing season marked the first time no organic farm waste was sent offsite, officially making Steel Farm zero waste. Also, the farm’s compost bays produced 34,000 pounds of compost that was spread back on our fields and accounted for all compost used on the farm.
Javits Center is dedicated to being a good neighbor to our community. This past fiscal year, over 113 tons of items and 80 tons of food were donated through our JavitsCares program. These donations include everything from furniture and decoration left behind by exhibitors to produce from Steel Farm that is used to create meals by organizations addressing food insecurity. One of the most unique donations from this past year was a 15-foot, 1,100-pound crystal chandelier donated by Bluebird Lighting. Designed by Baskervill and manufactured by Bluebird Lighting, the chandelier features a one-of-a-kind art overlay at its inner center, created by Kevin Barry Art Advisor, and is elegantly draped with crystals along its outer ring. Valued at $18,000, this extraordinary piece was originally displayed at Boutique Design New York and found a new home at the iconic House of Yes music venue in Brooklyn, thanks to a collaboration with Materials for the Arts.
Javits Center introduced its next great technology to improve customer experience – our AI chatbot Digit. Currently geared toward exhibitors, Digit is able to provide quick responses to straightforward questions to improve the exhibitor experience. With Digit handling the straightforward requests, our talented Exhibitor Solutions Team has more time to assist with complicated issues and provide a better experience for all.
In the coming year, Digit will expand to assisting our other audiences. Stay tuned for a new look on our website as well.
Javits Center rolled out new workforce management and enterprise resource planning systems to improve the efficiency of scheduling and paying employees. Now our staff’s payment schedule is aligned across all divisions,
creating a more cohesive process for our Finance Solutions Team. Our staff also has more access to their employment information, like scheduling, timesheet and vacation requests.
Looking forward, these systems will parlay into a customer portal where labor can be ordered in one easy platform.
New York City is called ‘The City That Never Sleeps’ for good reason. With the fast-paced change taking place around us, Javits Center constantly communicates with our customers to make sure they are aware and prepared. From service advisories about new laws and policies to alerts for public transportation disruptions, we are here to help everyone have a positive experience in the Empire State.
Employee engagement took a fitness turn with the Corporate Challenge. Over 50 employees participated in the 2024 race for a shining example of camaraderie, teamwork and wellness.
Employees investing in our sustainability initiatives is critical to those efforts being a success. During the summer, employees volunteer to help NYC Bird Alliance band herring gull chicks to monitor their migration patterns. Through this process, we discovered that chicks are returning to our roof to create their own nests – making us grandparents! Employees also volunteer to assist Astor Apiaries with our honey c
Not all our volunteer opportunities happen on our campus. Javits Center volunteers headed to Materials for the Arts to assist with sorting items donated for reuse in classrooms and arts organizations around the city – including from our JavitsCares program.
Sometimes coming together means standing for a cause. That is why Javits Center is proud to participate in multiple awareness days, including Domestic Violence Awareness and Breast Cancer Awareness. Coordinated through our Human Resources Team, employees are encouraged to wear the corresponding color of the cause and donate to charitable organizations. We also light the Crystal Palace for special causes to bring awareness to our neighbors in Hudson Yards.
The Javits Center welcomed a new Chief Executive Officer, Joyce Leveston, who officially assumed her role on March 10, 2025. Joyce brings over 35 years of highcaliber experience to her role. Prior to Javits Center, she was the Senior Vice President of Convention Centers at Oak View Group, where she oversaw strategy and operations for more than 60 convention and conference centers.

“As soon as we spoke to Joyce during the interview process, we knew she was the person to lead Javits Center into the future,” said Lee Perlman, Chair of the NYCCOC Board of Directors. “Her dynamism and hands-on experience will serve Javits well as she guides our team through the ever-changing events industry landscape. I am excited to work with her for the years to come to grow Javits Center’s reputation as one of the premier convention centers in the country.”
The annual Employee Service Awards provide the opportunity to acknowledge the people who make Javits the center of excellence every day. Nearly 10% of our staff has been here for over 20 years which speaks to the culture at Javits Center.

Javits Center is on the cusp of change. Under our new Chief Executive Officer, we plan to launch a brand campaign to reintroduce Javits Center as the place where the world gathers, and innovation thrives. Our brand strategy will highlight our flexible spaces, sustainability initiatives and stunning Hudson River views. We are going to where our customers are by targeting national associations and Meeting, Incentives, Conferences & Exhibitions (MICE) customers as a new focus for the Center. Our plans are all geared toward drawing new business to our community and creating more jobs as part of our mission to serve as a catalyst for economic development in New York.
With our continued investment in technology, we plan to elevate the customer experience with a more user-friendly website and our AI technology for more efficient response times. We will find ways to take all our operations to the next level. For example, the introduction of the Boomerang platform, which will allow guests to report missing items in under 60 seconds at a link on our website or through easy-to-access QR codes at our Concierge Desk. This is just one way the Javits Center is using technology and innovation to advance the customer experience.
what’s next!
Javits Center will continue to be a leader in sustainability by driving innovation in that space. With our expansive sustainable operations, we will continue to refine and build off what is in place to create a more sustainable future for our customers, our community and New York.
Javits Center is proud to serve New York and will continue to do so in the exciting year ahead!
We extend our heartfelt gratitude toward our staff, community, customers and collaborators who all play an integral role in running Javits Center and are the essence of our excellence.
