JULY AUNG
ABOUT ME She/Her/Hers Hello! My name is July Aung and I’m currently a landscape designer at Terra Ferma Landscapes. For me, landscape architecture is fascinating due to its ability to morph the land and orchestrate experiences for people to enjoy. A designer can direct people to slow down, speed up or stop to explore the view. In the world of Avatar, landscape architects are like the earth benders. I hope to become the best earth bender and create memorable spaces for years to come!

01_Olivet Garden Recently acquired by Cypress Lawn, Olivet Garden is a 65-acres cemetery located at the base of San Bruno mountains in Colma, California. It is renowned to be the resting place for many members of the marines and circus industry. This project aims to create an inviting entry experience for the visitors with respect to the existing site structures and conditions.

Two options were presented for phase 1 of the Schematic Design. My approach for Option 2 was to invite the visitors through the large gateway, framed by a water wall, labyrinth and tall Italian Stone Pine trees. The gate takes a modern appearance with gray stone veneer and wood cladding, delicately tying together the old and new developments in Olivet Garden today. The reflective features honors the resting souls and their legacies while the art gallery within the inner walls of the gate will pay homage to the past and present stories of the land.

MASTER PLAN_Entry Experience The final entry design embraced the two options presented in phase 1 with a monumental gateway that ties the campus of Olivet Garden, along with low-maintenance and drought-tolerant plantings that can withstand the harsh conditions of the region. Additional elements, such as the circular voids on either sides of the gate reinforce the ongoing branding efforts by Cypress Lawn team.

MASTER PLAN_Mausoleum During SD1 presentation, the clients shared their desire to refresh the planting palette of the existing planters in front of the mausoleum. The proposed design frames the structure with tall columnar shrubs and Italian Stone Pine trees, establishing a pleasant visual as visitors enter the campus.

03_Nest For a community-oriented town like New Cuyama, one of the missing component is an outdoor gathering space. The existing Richardson Park serves as a stopover for truckers and visitors, but does not provide outdoor living and entertainment spaces for the locals to enjoy. Nest accommodates to these needs with newly planted tree canopies and creative seating options that celebrates the local culture. The project also provides a leisure pathway that connects ties the civic and recreation areas.
